Gore Verbinski would seem to have hit a snag in his big-budget blockbuster career after his Lone Ranger movie for Disney became a notoriously bloated flop. However, he was able to return with a smaller directorial effort after that, with the suspense film A Cure for Wellness. It has been eight years since the release of A Cure for Wellness, and Verbinski returns from his hiatus to helm an action-adventure film with the humorous title Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. The movie sports an impressive cast, including Sam Rockwell, Michael Peña, Haley Lu Richardson, Zazie Beetz and Juno Temple. The film has just started production on location in South Africa.
The description of the movie’s plot, according to Deadline, reads, “The film, written by Matthew Robinson (Love & Monsters), centers on a man from the future (Rockwell) who arrives at a diner in Los Angeles where he must recruit...

After eight years, Gore Verbinski’s back with a thriller called Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. And it now has a cast, with Sam Rockwell, Michael Peña and Zazie Beetz among the large names.
It’s almost exactly eight years since director Gore Verbinski released a film – that being the 2016 horror, A Cure For Wellness. Now, though, the Pirates Of The Caribbean filmmaker appears to have gotten a new project together, with Deadline reporting that a cast has been announced for a genre mash-up called Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.

It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly a decade since the last film from Gore Verbinski, 2016’s A Cure for Wellness, but after being attached to a handful of projects, the director is finally looking to return. Sam Rockwell, Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Peña, Zazie Beetz, and Juno Temple are attached to star in his next feature Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, Deadline reports.
Scripted by Matthew Robinson (Love & Monsters), the action-adventure film follows “a ‘man from the future’ (Rockwell) who arrives at a diner in Los Angeles where he must recruit the precise combination of disgruntled patrons to join him on a one-night-six-block quest to save the world from the terminal threat of a rogue artificial intelligence.” With production set to kick off this year in Cape Town, South Africa, expect a 2024 release.

Believe it or not, but it’s been nearly eight years since the release of Gore Verbinski’s last movie — the underrated A Cure for Wellness — but the director finally has a new project in the works. Deadline reports that Verbinski has assembled a fantastic ensemble of actors for his action-adventure movie titled Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.
Sam Rockwell, one of my all-time favourite actors, will be leading the cast, which includes Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus), Juno Temple (Fargo), Michael Peña (Ant-Man and the Wasp), and Zazie Beetz (Joker). Leo Woodall won’t forget his time on set of The White Lotus season two anytime soon. The actor said this week his experience on the show felt like “one big holiday.”
“It was one of those shows where, because there were so many characters and so many storylines, there were so many days off,” Woodall told People, adding that the free time meant he and his co-stars spent a lot of time vacationing together.
Woodall played Jack in The White Lotus season two, a British boy who flirted with Haley Lu Richardson’s Portia and assisted his non-biological uncle Quentin (Tom Hollander) in a plan to murder Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya. The second season of Mike White’s anthology show took place at a resort in Sicily, where the cast lived for several weeks during filming in 2022.
“It does feel like a world away now,” Woodall said of his time in Italy.

When Leo Woodall thinks about the past year of his life, the word that comes to mind is — of course — “busy.” He broke out with a star-making turn in season two of The White Lotus (as the enigmatic and slightly sinister love interest of Haley Lu Richardson’s character), and that brought magazine covers, red carpets and an onslaught of online attention. He then went straight into production as the lead in Netflix’s adaptation of One Day, which will debut Feb. 8.
But, like many rising stars, he also has discovered the double-edged sword of industry success. “I’ve been so fortunate to work a bunch, but you end up quite disconnected from other aspects of your life. I wasn’t really expecting that, and there are things I need to figure out,” says Woodall, 27, adding that he’s getting better at staying in touch with friends and family during heavy work periods.

Tanya McQuoid lives on from beyond the waters of the Mediterranean, as Jennifer Coolidge has won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmy for her performance in “The White Lotus.”
This is her second win for “The White Lotus.” Coolidge won previously for her performance as the dazed and grieving Tanya in the HBO smash hit’s Season 1 back in summer 2022 when the television academy still considered Mike White’s vacation nightmare series a “limited or anthology series.” With rule changes, and another season interconnected to those past on the way, “The White Lotus” is now technically a drama series per an Emmys category shift in February 2023.
It’s hard to believe we are still talking about “The White Lotus” Season 2, which premiered in October 2022, but so goes the beloved show’s staying power. Season 2 found Tanya adrift (again) in Sicily, now married to BLM (not that BLM...

Haley Lu Richardson has a number of popular works under her belt. The 28-year-old star launched her acting career in the early 2010s, landing one of her first roles in the Disney Channel sitcom "Shake It Up," alongside Zendaya and Bella Thorne. The exposure from "Shake It Up" helped open the doors for Richardson to take on other film and TV projects throughout the mid-2010s, including the films "The Edge of Seventeen" and M. Night Shyamalan's "Split," as well as shows like "Ravenswood" and "Recovery Road." Most notably, Richardson starred as Portia in season two of HBO's acclaimed series "The White Lotus." She also portrayed Hadley Sullivan in the Netflix rom-com "Love at First Sight," which hit the streamer on Sept. 15.
When she isn't working, Richardson keeps her personal life out of the spotlight. The actor has only publicly dated one person: former "Jane the Virgin" star Brett Dier.

One Piece held onto the treasured top spot among Netflix’s English-language TV series for the week of September 11 to 17.
Monkey D. Luffy and his crew charmed their way to another 10M views, the same week that the live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga was renewed for a second season. The series has now tallied about 48M views since it launched on Netflix just under three weeks ago.

“One Piece” continues to dominate the competition on the English-language TV chart during the Sept. 11-17 viewing window on the Netflix Top 10 chart. After recently scoring a Season 2 pickup, the show gained another 10 million total views in its second full week of availability.
In its first four days of availability, the live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga quickly sailed to the top of Netflix’s top 10 chart with 18.5 million total views. During the Aug. 28-Sept. 3 viewing window, the series reached the Top 10 in 93 countries, and debuted at No. 1 in 46 with 140.1 million hours viewed. During the Sept. 4-10 viewing window, the show raked in another 19.2 million total views and was the most-viewed title of the week. While it’s not an exact comparison (Netflix only calculated viewing hours at the time), “Cowboy Bebop” — Netflix’s 2021 live-action adaptation based on the anime series of the same name, which was canceled after one season — opened at No.

Warner Bros. Discovery is projecting huge losses from the impact of writer and actor strikes, but “Barbie” is still around to help them pay bills. It’s hardly news that as Greta Gerwig’s smash hit starts its initial post-theater platform release, it’s #1 on PVOD charts. The real story: that it’s doing so with a hefty premium price.
Gerwig’s #1 theatrical hit worldwide for 2023 (which will end up with around $1.5 billion in theatrical returns) is now renting on PVOD for $24.99, with the option to add it to your digital library permanently for $29.99. Studios recover 80 percent from revenues returned for these transactions, less a small slice for the carrier. That means Warner Bros. Discovery will recoup around $20 for each “Barbie” rental, $25 for each download. It’s a bonanza.
As always, how much actual money is involved with these transactions is not known, but if five million domestic homes rent the film,...

Let me put it this way: Netflix’s latest rom-com, Love at First Sight, took my 4/10 kind of day to a solid 6.5/10. That is me basically saying that the film, which I started watching only for work with less than the bare minimum expectation, made me feel good. There is a severe lack of good romantic comedies these days, which is particularly sad given the chaotic, misery-filled world we live in demands feel-good distractions. And the ones that Netflix churns out every now and then are mostly atrocities in the name of cinema. That is why I would compare coming across Love at First Sight to finding a needle in the haystack.
Amongst the movie genres, romantic comedy is probably the one that is sneered at the most by “Cinephiles.” This doesn’t make any sense to me, considering I have always been an admirer of both Richard Curtis and John Carney.

Netflix’s movie selection will make this a September to remember. From an abundance of romantic comedies and dramedies arriving on the streamer this month to fun-loving animation that tells heartfelt stories, there is no shortage of stream-worthy content as the colder months approach. While fall technically does not start until Sept. 21, this list may or may not supply some watch suggestions for pumpkin spice season.

As they look forward to a lavish party at Quentin’s (Tom Hollander) Palermo estate, Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) gives Portia (Haley Lu Richardson) a hazy warning about Jack (Leo Woodall). Meanwhile, the Di Grassos head out in search of distant Sicilian relatives, but Dominic (Michael Imperioli) bristles when Albie (Adam Dimarco) invites Lucia (Simona Tabasco) along as their translator. “Abductions” was written and directed by series creator-showrunner Mike White.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the drama races post-nominations.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back, Hollywood is on strike, and the 2023 Emmy Awards ceremony might even take place in 2024 because what better way for the television academy and its broadcast partner to stay relevant than by potentially giving Jeremy Allen White the Best Comedy Actor award for “The Bear” Season 1 roughly 19 months after “The Bear” Season 1 premiered — all while he’s also winning honors for “The Bear” Season 2 at competing awards ceremonies? Good stuff. What I mean is that we could be typing about this week’s 2023 Emmy nominees for quite a while. So let’s start with the drama categories, which left many online observers pressed because of the focus on...

Critics’ Conversation: Despite Heartening Inclusions, Emmy Voters Struggle to Broaden Their Horizons
Daniel Fienberg: The Television Academy has done it again! And I’m not sure I mean that as a compliment.
I’m happy to see two of my favorite comedies of the past year, Succession and The White Lotus, dominating the nominations. On the drama side.
And I’m glad to see Emmy voters finally recognized that my absolute favorite show of last year, Reservation Dogs, exists. Or exists enough to receive one nomination in the sound category.
And how nice that Emmy voters also noticed Dead Ringers. For cinematography. But somehow left Rachel Weisz out of the Lead Actress in a Limited Series category.
Once again, it was an Emmy nomination slate that suggests voters watch a half-dozen shows, which allows dozens more to slip through the cracks. Nowhere is that clearer than the supporting categories, where nearly every actor from The White Lotus got nominated (Nearly… sorry...

Apart from somewhat surprising snubs of Harrison Ford (for both Paramount+ drama 1923 and Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking), Steve Martin (for both Hulu’s comedy Only Murders in the Building and NBC’s scripted variety series Saturday Night Live), Rachel Weisz (for Amazon Prime’s limited series Dead Ringers), Imelda Staunton (for Netflix’s drama The Crown), Helen Mirren (for 1923) and Carol Burnett (for AMC’s drama Better Call Saul), and somewhat unexpected nods for Amazon Freevee’s comedy Jury Duty, Sharon Horgan (for Apple TV+’s comedy Bad Sisters) and four performers associated with the Hulu limited series Welcome to Chippendales (Kumail Nanjiani, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis and Annaleigh Ashford), the 2023 Emmy nominations announcement unfolded largely as I expected it would.

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight author Jennifer E. Smith has nothing but praise for Love at First Sight, the 2023 Netflix adaptation of her 2011 bestselling novel. The new trailer introduces the two strangers whose meet-cute occurs in an airport. Haley Lu Richardson (White Lotus) and Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody) star as the couple who experience a much more enjoyable flight than most travelers.
Author Smith told Netflix’s Tudum that she’s thrilled with Richardson and Hardy as the leads. “They are such a great Hadley and Oliver. They’re so charming and winning, and they have great chemistry. They just did right by the characters,” said Smith.
Katie Lovejoy adapted Smith’s book and Vanessa Caswill directed. Discussing the author, Caswill noted, “Jennifer was so trusting and generous and not precious in the slightest. […]She wrote me the sweetest email after she finally watched the film. It was so lovely,...
