This post contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Discovery."
In its final season, "Star Trek: Discovery" has reintroduced a species of aliens that "Star Trek" fans haven't seen in live-action in decades. The Breen, a mysterious warrior race that first appeared in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," have made their surprise return in recent weeks thanks to the gooier half of ill-fated courier duo Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis).
In their original incarnation, the Breen appeared clad in metal helmets with snout-like protrusions and green laser-like eye bands. They were typically covered up in outfits featuring diagonal metal bands, and though characters on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" often made offhand comments about what the then-unseen aliens might be like, little was explained about their culture in the 20th century "Star Trek" shows. Enter "Discovery," which has a long track record of building upon and deepening existing in-universe lore.

The leader of the American Federation of Musicians proclaimed that Hollywood labor is “in a new era” as dozens of members of various entertainment unions came to the doorstep of studio labor negotiators in support of the start of his union’s contract negotiations on Monday.
As an early drizzle that morning turned into driving rain, members of the Writers Guild of America, SAG-AFTRA, IATSE and Teamsters Local 399 rallied in front of the Sherman Oaks offices of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers with picket signs, and a few umbrellas, in hand. To AFM’s chief negotiator and international president Tino Gagliardi, this kind of unity for musicians was unlike anything he’d seen in his time in union leadership. “We’re in a new era, especially in the American labor movement, with regard to everyone coalescing and coming together and collaborating in order to get what...

Call it Montezuma’s revenge. Or more precisely in this case, Tlaloc’s revenge.
Amid the hype for the second season of the The Summer I Turned Pretty or feature Red, White & Royal Blue, another Amazon title has quietly been reigning over the streaming service’s top 10.
The Black Demon, a shark movie with a supernatural and Latino bent, has claimed in the number one spot on Amazon’s streaming rankings for seven consecutive days since its debut Aug. 22, beating out not just those Amazon sensations, but also major studio fare such as Universal’s Cocaine Bear and Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons, which also sit in the streamer’s daily top 10 ranking of most-watched entries in the U.S.
It’s an impressive feat, given that the film, made for under $10 million, had just a small marketing spend, though without actual viewing numbers, it’s hard to judge the...

How many shark movies are too many shark movies? And how many ways are there for them to showcase something that hasn’t already been done to death? Directed by Adrian Grunberg and written by Carlos Cisco and Boise Esquerra, The Black Demon borrows the same trope as Jaws and the Meg series—exploring the theme of an enormous monster living in the oceans, preying on humans because of their consistent greed in wanting to take over nature. Here, the real, iniquitous behemoth is not the beast in the waters but the fictional oil conglomerate. Sadly, none of the events in the movie amount to anything substantial, and the ideas all seem half-baked before just boiling down to a dispassionate family drama. The least you would expect is for the movie to have a decent amount of jump scares and high-tension moments that leave you on the edge of your seat,...

Sincere performances and lively banter turn hokey into entertaining as Josh Lucas’s engineer and his family do battle with a megalodon
It would seem that megalodons are the menace of the moment. These ginormous sharks, thought to be extinct for millions of years, have been retro-spawned for entertainment purposes by the audiovisual-industrial complex – specifically in the Meg franchise but also on the Discovery Channel – because great white sharks, veterans of the Jaws movies, just don’t cut it any more. Still, in thematic terms there’s a throughline that connects most shark movies: one way or another, they’re all about the return of the repressed, with the sharks manifesting the oceanic subconsciousness’ raging, violent id that has been enraged by the human superego effort at mastery over nature. In the original Jaws, it’s not so much Bruce the shark that’s the big bad as it is the township’s greedy mayor,...

After the trainwreck that was Cocaine Shark and with the spectre of Jurassic Shark 3: Seavenge looming over me, The Black Demon, or any other shark film for that matter, may not have been an obvious choice. But this one caught my attention when it was announced and the idea of a finned fear film with enough of a budget to give it some bite was hard to say no to.
Paul Sturges is the safety officer for Nixon Oil, a corporate name that does not exactly inspire confidence. He has been sent to Baja to inspect one of the company’s rigs and has brought his family along. He may have to work but his wife Ines, daughter, Audrey, and son Tommy can have a vacation.

Plot: When a leaky oil rig awakens a vengeful god in the form of a megalodon shark, an oil man is trapped on the rig with his family and the surviving workers.
Review: There are a whole lot of shark thrillers out there, but not many of them have a supernatural edge. That makes director Adrian Grunberg’s The Black Demon stand out from the pack a bit, because while the shark in this thriller is described as being a megalodon, like the sharks in The Meg and Shark Attack 3 and probably plenty of others, this isn’t just a megalodon that has resurfaced from the prehistoric age. This movie, which has marketing material that informs that it’s “based on the Mexican legend”, presents us with a giant shark that is actually a vengeful god, awakened by the pollution that has been spilled in its waters, and is able...

The legend of El Demonio Negro, or The Black Demon, brings a mythical, almost supernatural, quality to this latest shark attack horror feature. Director Adrian Grünberg (Rambo: The Last Blood), working from a script by Boise Esquerra and Carlos Cisco, dials in on the folkloric aspect of The Black Demon to wield the horror as a cautionary entry in eco-horror rather than a conventional shark attack feature. Fresh mythology struggles to keep these shark infested waters afloat, however.

Back in 2018, Steve Alten’s The Meg finally came to the big screen, but not in the form that we had originally been promised. The big screen Megalodon horror movie was released with a PG-13 rating – much to the chagrin of star Jason Statham – leaving fans hungry for a shark attack movie with a bit more bite. And it looks like we’re getting one this year.

Exclusive: Danny Ramirez (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) has signed on to produce and star in thriller To Die Sane.
The genre pic centers on a brutally effective Mexican-American Ice agent who becomes increasingly paranoid and unhinged after a detained young immigrant commits suicide and his fellow agents fall victim one by one to El Cuco, the mythic child-snatching figure of Latino lore.
Moises Zamora and Carlos Cisco wrote the script; Ramirez will produce alongside Zamora and Bianca Quesada. A director for the project, from Zone One Productions, has not yet been disclosed.
Ramirez recently co-starred opposite Anthony Mackie in Disney+ and Marvel’s Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
