BBC Studios has posted another record financial year, the BBC annual report reveals, as the Corporation’s production and sales wing continues its aggressive commercial push.
Profits for the 2022/23 financial year were £240M ($310M), a 6% increase, while revenues neared £2.1B ($2.7B), up almost 28%. Returns to the BBC were also a record, £362M ($467.5M), and content investment stood at £177M ($228.9M). However, ad market downturns hit its streaming and channels biz.
This marks a second year of record growth, as BBC Studios aims to double the size of its business between 2021/22 and 2028. The division had already doubled in size in the five years to March 2022 and last year set record totals for Ebitda and sales.
The numbers also provide some comforting reading for the BBC as it faces the crisis over the unnamed reported who alleged to have paid an underage person for sexual images. BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell had...

BBC Studios has taken 25% of The Only Way is Essex and Geordie Shore exec Sarah Tyekiff’s new indie, Mettlemouse Entertainment.
Tyekiff recently exited Towie producer Lime Pictures, where she ran the All3Media-owned company’s UK and U.S. unscripted slates, and has now re-emerged with Mettlemouse. Former Youngest Media Chief Creative Officer Shaun Parry is joining her as Creative Director.
For the BBC’s production and commercial arm, the investment is the latest in an aggressive series of moves that includes buying Swedish producer Stv, taking stakes in the likes of Simon Shalgosky’s Rebel Rebel Pictures and Small Axe producer Turbine Studios and assuming full control of Voltage TV.
The investment gives BBC Studios a first look at global distribution and format rights from Mettlemouse’s slate. “With BBC Studios’ track record of managing international hits they’re the perfect fit to supercharge our new adventure both...

The Only Way is Essex producer Lime Pictures has snapped up one of the highest-profile execs to have left Paramount Global’s UK unscripted arm following its closure.
Joe McLusky, who was Viacom International Studios’ (Vis) Vice President and General Manager, Non-Scripted, has become Lime’s Director of Production Unscripted, replacing now-Monkey MD Helen Kruger Bratt. He will oversee all UK unscripted production across Lime Pictures and its All3Media stablemates Lion Television and Wise Owl Films.
McLusky is an experienced exec who has previously worked for Lime along with ITV Studios, Shine and Granada. At Vis, he oversaw a team making hundreds of hours of shows per year, mostly for Paramount network Channel 5 and MTV, including the likes of Cruising with Jane McDonald and Catfish UK. That team was closed earlier this year amidst Paramount Global layoffs, leading to around 20 redundancies, with other high-profile exits including Oliver Wright, who...
