[This story contains spoilers for The Fall Guy.]
After the many industry-wide challenges of the last four years, The Fall Guy screenwriter Drew Pearce just wanted to make a feel-good Friday night movie, and based on various metrics, the consensus among critics and audiences is that he and the rest of his collaborators succeeded. In ten years, the social framing around the David Leitch-directed movie won’t be that it opened to $27.7 million instead of a projected $30 million. Rather, the impression of a good action romcom will remain above all.
Pearce is no stranger to IP-driven films, as he’s officially written for Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3, the fifth Mission: Impossible film, Rogue Nation, as well as the Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. That also doesn’t include all the cups of coffee he’s had with other franchises in an uncredited capacity. So, compared to the aforementioned IP, the assumption is that The Fall Guy,...

Elisabeth Moss has spilled some tea on the behind-the-scenes of the 1999 film Girl, Interrupted.
Moss starred alongside Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, and Brittany Murphy in the Oscar-winning drama about a women’s psychiatric facility.
The future Handmaid’s Tale actress was just 15 years old when she played Polly Clark, a teenager with schizophrenia who also has visible scarring from facial burns.
In an interview on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, Moss said that the on-screen tension between characters meant that the cast naturally became divided when the cameras weren’t rolling.
“There were two kinds of camps. There was the Winona Ryder camp and the Angelina Jolie camp,” she said. The divisions were “based on what was on camera.”

Elisabeth Moss recently appeared on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast while promoting her new FX series “The Veil” and reflected on the “intimidating” but exhilarating set of James Mangold’s 1999 drama “Girl, Interrupted.” Moss was around 15 years old when she shot the movie and starred as Polly “Torch” Clark, a burn victim who suffers from schizophrenia. The cast was headlined by Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, the latter of whom won an Oscar for her performance. Because of the tension that exists between their two characters, Moss said the film set became naturally divided into two camps.
“There were two kinds of camps. There was the Winona Ryder camp and the Angelina Jolie camp. … Off camera, but based on what was on camera, based on the script,” Moss said. “I was in the Winona Ryder camp. The Angelina Jolie camp was really cool. I was intimidated by the Angelina Jolie camp.

Plot: After being gravely injured, a stuntman named Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) tries to win back his ex, a movie director named Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), by finding the star of her mega-budget action movie, who’s gone missing after falling in with a dangerous crowd.
Review: The Fall Guy is director David Leitch’s love letter to the stunt profession. For those not in the know, Leitch, before becoming a director known for blockbusters like Bullet Train and Deadpool 2, was a stuntman, having worked on a slew of action classics. It was a movie with a questionable title. A lot of critics were rough on it. Gene Siskel even called it one of the worst movies of the year. It came and went in theatres with few movie-goers paying any attention. But in the years since its release, it has become a beloved cult classic, with a legion of fans that love quoting its memorable lines. Some of its youngest viewers were drawn in by what they saw as a wish fulfillment concept: What would you do if the babysitter croaked on the first day of your mom’s vacation… so you had the house to yourself for two months straight? We get to see what the Crandall kids would do in the 1991 comedy Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead – and it’s time for this one to be Revisited.

The Godfather series directed by Francis Ford Coppola is still regarded as one of the iconic trilogies of Hollywood. While the first two films were runaway blockbusters, the 3rd film did not fare as well at the box office and also received lukewarm responses from critics. Nevertheless, the franchise became a cult classic thanks to memorable performances from Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, and others.

While the actors were defining factors in the success of the films, Coppola’s decision to include his daughter Sofia Coppola in The Godfather 3 ironically proved to be a mistake. Having replaced Winona Ryder for the role, the filmmaker received a lot of criticism for her performance, but did not get disheartened as she was fully aware that her future did not lie in acting.

In Frank Herbert's 1965 sci-fi novel "Dune," the Fremen are the desert-dwelling people of the planet Arrakis who have learned to survive in extremely inclement conditions. Using high-tech stillsuits, the Fremen can capture and recycle every last microgram of fluid their bodies excrete. When one of their own dies, they can siphon the water out of their bodies and add it to special underground casks that keep it fresh and drinkable. Additionally, they have trained themselves to walk using an irregular stepping pattern, as regular footfalls attract massive underground sandworms that might eat them alive. The Fremen all have blue-tinted eyes due to constant exposure to the spice melange, a valuable psychedelic resource that expands consciousness and facilitates space travel.
Herbert also explained that the Fremen speak a distant derivation of Arabic, a language carried over from ancient Earth. The Fremen language also took syntax from other imaginary languages like...

A teenage girl meets all manner of extremists, hipsters and hoodlums in Sean Price Williams’ amusing, contemporary adventure
High-school student Lillian (Talia Ryder) gets separated from her classmates and chaperones at a pizza parlour during a school trip to Washington DC because a deranged shooter is convinced paedophiles are operating out of its basement. And so begins an adventure up and back down the eastern seaboard, taking Lillian from her native South Carolina up through the nation’s capital, to New York City, Vermont and beyond, meeting all manner of eccentrics, extremists, hipsters and hoodlums. It’s the sort of lolloping, weird ride through society that’s a textbook example of the classical picaresque, in which a low-born, none-too-honest but appealing protagonist gets up to stuff. Think of 18th-century novels like Tom Jones or Moll Flanders, but updated to contemporary America – although the film contrives to get Lillian dolled up in revolutionary-era petticoats and corsetry,...

An action rom-com with all the elements for something iconic, David Leitch’s The Fall Guy features truly remarkable stunt work and charismatic performances by Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, yet buckles under the weight of its plot. Adapted from a 1981 action series that lasted five years, the film would have been best-served as a complete reboot jettisoning much of a plot that intrudes and ultimately means less time for Blunt and Gosling together.
What remains, though, is a love letter to the craft of stunt work with stuntman-turned-director Leitch providing a behind-the-scenes peek both on the set of the giant-budget action film Blunt’s Jody Moreno is directing and, later, during the film’s credit sequence. The Fall Guy, along with Richard Rush’s classic The Stunt Man and Dan Hartley’s thoughtful documentary David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived, are all excellent cases for creating a new Academy...

Michael Keaton has some great news for “Beetlejuice” fans. During a recent interview on SiriusXM’s “The Jess Cagle Show,” the actor said he has watched a first cut of Tim Burton’s upcoming sequel, officially titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” and he has nothing but raves for it.
“I’ve seen it now. I’m going to see it again after a couple of little tweaks in the editing room, and I confidently say this thing is great,” Keaton said. “The [original] was so fun and exciting visually. [The sequel is] all that but really beautiful and interestingly emotional here and there. I wasn’t ready for that. It’s great.”
The “Beetlejuice” sequel reunites Keaton with Burton and original cast members Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara. Newcomers include Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe. Plot details are not yet known, but Ortega confirmed last month that she is starring as the daughter of Ryder’s Lydia Deetz.

Jenna Ortega hopes 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' can introduce young people to "weird, strange off-putting stories".The 21-year-old actress is playing Lydia Deetz's daughter Astrid in the upcoming sequel and she thinks the original 1988 classic's notoriety means a follow-up is necessary after all this time. She told Vanity Fair: "That’s why I was excited that they were bringing it back as well."I feel like studios nowadays, of course, they want people in seats, and you’ve got to do reboots or sequels or things like that to get people entwined, but to bring 'Beetlejuice' back — of all of the stories — is so good because people need to revisit weird, strange, off-putting stories again."We need to introduce the younger generation that’s always on the phone to new artistic and creative ideas."The weirder you get with it, the more people you can get to see it,...

Michael Keaton had a very practical reason for returning to the “Beetlejuice” universe: practical effects.
Keaton, who recently reprised his other Tim Burton role of Batman in DC movie “The Flash” and previously played villain the Vulture in Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” credited the upcoming “Beetlejuice” sequel for eschewing CGI, a shortcut that was not really around for the 1998 film.
“Beetlejuice 2” is also sticking with much of the first film’s cast. Beyond Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara are reprising their respective roles for the follow-up feature. They’ll be joined by new characters played by Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and “Wednesday” breakout Jenna Ortega, who stars as Ryder’s onscreen daughter (O’Hara’s granddaughter).
Sounds like a party.
“It’s the most fun I’ve had on set in a long time. On one hand, you’d go, ‘Well, of course it’s the most fun.

Over Hollywood's history, directors have done all sorts of quirky and morally questionable things in an effort to get a certain performance out of their actors. Francis Ford Coppola screamed abuse at Winona Ryder off-camera during the making of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and encouraged the other actors to do the same. Then there's everything that William Friedkin did to the cast of "The Exorcist," from slapping them before shouting "action!" to firing live guns to get a shocked expression.
By comparison, "Meet Me in St. Louis" director Vincente Minnelli telling six-year-old actress Margaret O'Brien that her dog had died in order to make her cry for the 1944 musical "Meet Me in St. Louis" seems almost tame. Especially since it probably didn't actually happen (more on that in a moment). But that's the subject of a sketch on this week's episode of "Saturday Night Live," with guest host Kate McKinnon playing...

When Leah Ryder got her first office job in 2020, she knew exactly what she was most excited about: getting up every day and figuring out what she wanted to wear.
Fashion was “just something I always loved,” she says, and during the eight years she worked retail pre-2020, she’d take snapshots of her outfits of the day and share them with friends. But things changed with her new job. She began taking quick videos of her outfits and decided to post them to TikTok, which was beginning to surge in popularity.
“There was literally a video that I, every day, either in the bathroom at my office or before I left my house, just took a three-second clip of my outfit,...

As the midseason finale approaches, Invasion has once again found its foothold by expanding its interconnected storytelling. The fifth episode, titled “A Voice From The Other Side,” explores a strange connection the invading aliens seem to share with humans through Mitsuki’s experiments, which could really change our understanding of the narrative as a whole.
In the previous episode, the aftermath of the human assault on alien attack vessels was shown, as the aliens upgraded into a more vicious, quadruped form and doubled down on their efforts of world dominance. Previously, Aneesha and her family begrudgingly accompanied the Movement members in rescuing a family during the attack on the alien vessels, and in the midst of the chaotic situation, her daughter Sarah went missing. Former Lieutenant Trevante Cole, who went to Oklahoma at site zero of the alien invasion following the clues from Caspar’s artwork, was captured for illegal infiltration.

The Defense Department on Thursday unveiled a website that will serve as a clearinghouse for declassified information about unidentified aerial phenomena, NBC News reports.
Billed as a “one-stop shop” for publicly available records about UFOs, the website will work with an office Congress created last year to detect and identify what the Pentagon officially refers to as unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs.
“The posting of the website is the next step in this process, in terms of ensuring that the public has information and insight into UAPs,” the Pentagon press secretary, Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, said at a news conference Thursday. “And so what you see today is what has been declassified to date.”
Content is spare on the site so far. It includes just a few videos (labeled “unresolved” or “unclassified”) There are a lot of sections labeled “Coming Soon.

Major UK broadcasters and Prime Video have pledged extra donations to the UK’s Film & TV Charity following an astonishing 800% rise in grant applications from workers struggling with the economic downturn.
The charity has also added an additional £500,000 to its budget as the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Prime agree further donations to its summer campaign. Other partners are expected to add to the overall pot as the challenging period looks set to continue.
The charity described the extra £500,000 as “unprecedented” and said the industry “faces critical economic conditions that could devastate the livelihood of professionals with long term consequences.”
The move is the first by incoming charity CEO Marcus Ryder, a former BBC News exec who will take over from Alex Pumfrey next month and is due to speak this week at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

This story about the Emmy-nominated songs first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In the Emmys’ Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category, it pays to be funny. Over the past two decades, comedic songs have won more than two-thirds of the time. Most years, they’ve landed the majority of the nominations.
This year, four of the six nominees are from comedies: “Fought & Lost” and “A Beautiful Game” from “Ted Lasso,” “Your Personal Trash Man Can” from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Now You Know” from the TV movie “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

New Delhi, July 30 (Ians) For J. Robert Oppenheimer, the subject of Christopher Nolan’s biopic of the nuclear physicist regarded as the ‘Father of the Atomic Bomb, the Bhagavad Gita was a spiritual crutch, although his belief has been overshadowed by the scene in the film where he’s seen reading out the holy scripture in between having sex with his wife Kitty.
Even his translation of a seminal verse of the Gita, which was first red-flagged by historian James A. Hijiya in ‘The Gita of J. Robert Oppenheimer’, has been questioned by the author and mythologist Devdutt Pattnaik.
Nonetheless, Oppenheimer, who was raised in a non-observant Jewish family of New York, would unfailingly turn to the Gita and quote from it on many occasions.

Editor’s note: Marcus Ryder is a veteran UK and international news journalist and editor, academic and executive. He is among the most-respected figures working in British media diversity and his campaigning work as the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity has been influential throughout British entertainment circles. Yesterday, he was named CEO of the Film and TV Charity. Like our recent guest columnist John Ridley, Ryder harbors concerns companies are turning their backs on anti-racism and diversity pledges made since the death of George Floyd but here he argues the issues date back much further than that.
Earlier this month, it was revealed the BBC’s Head of Creative Diversity, Joanna Abeyie, was leaving the corporation, although for many people working in the area of media diversity her departure had been an open secret for a few weeks prior.

Marcus Ryder, a highly-respected and BAFTA-winning executive and a leading figure in the efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in the British media industry, has been appointed CEO of U.K.’s The Film and TV Charity.
Ryder, who was most recently head of external consultancies at the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity, replaces Alex Pumfrey, who stepped down earlier this year and later joined ITV as director of strategic partnerships.
The appointment comes just as the Film and TV Charity — which was at forefront of efforts to help film and TV professionals impacted by the pandemic and has also highlighted a mental health crisis in the sector — ramps up support for industry workers facing uncertainty caused by the cost-of-living crisis and wider industry factors.

In 1988, Tim Burton turned the quiet village of East Corinth, Vermont into Winter River, Connecticut for Beetlejuice. 35 years later, the filmmaker returned for Beetlejuice 2. While the majority of filming took place in London, the exteriors of the original filming locations were recreated in East Corinth for two days of on-location shooting. After it wrapped, fans — myself included — flocked to the quaint town to experience Winter River in person.
Burton originally chose East Corinth after stumbling on postcards featuring scenic photos of the area while location scouting for Beetlejuice throughout New England. According to locals, the studio wanted him to recreate the necessary locations on a sound stage for Beetlejuice 2, but Burton insisted on returning to the original site.

It’s no wonder that the long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel was finally announced this year. Between the buzz Michael Keaton was getting for his return as Batman in The Flash and Winona Ryder’s resurgence in Stranger Things, the top-line stars of the 1988 film had suddenly become hot again. Of course, the truth is that Tim Burton and the stars have been talking about making a sequel since 1990, and the stars finally aligned, with the right script coming along. The original Beetlejuice, of course, was a turning point in 16-year-old Ryder’s career, and she spoke to us about her memories of meeting Burton for the first time when she was up for the role. Exclusive: Marcus Ryder, a figurehead for the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity, has renewed his call for an industry-wide anti-racism body following the British Film Institute’s admission that it mishandled a discrimination complaint.
Ryder revealed that high-level industry talks took place earlier this year over establishing an independent arbiter for racism complaints. Ofcom, the UK media regulator, chaired a meeting about the proposal in January, inviting major UK broadcasters and entertainment trade unions, including Bectu.
Ryder said the talks had been constructive and there was little objection to the principle of a complaints body, but no formal proposals are currently under consideration. Ofcom said a range of views were shared, but it was not within its remit to impose an anti-racism body on the industry. Instead, Ofcom said it will continue to encourage dialogue on the issue.
