The prevalence of female directors is higher in documentary than fiction or animation, study finds.
The share of films made by female directors in Europe is “growing slowly,” reaching 19% in 2017 according to a study.
Overall, only 17% of European feature films were directed by women between 2003 and 2017, with females representing 21% of all directors that made a European film during that time.
In the report on the gender of directors by the European Audiovisual Observatory, 49% of all women directors included in the study had made just one film since 2003.

Few movie stars have an affability as potent as Will Smith’s. At 51, it’s an asset he and his collaborators, big and small alike, have bet big (and mostly won big) on for roughly half his lifetime. Consider that alongside this: save a Seven Pounds, After Earth, or Bright here and there, he’s rarely slept on the job. Even when requirements of him are lacking, Smith manages to show up for at least a scene or two, elevating even the I, Robots and Collateral Beauties of the world, if only for a moment. His consistency in playing Atlas for lower grade blockbuster material has proven somewhat a staple of his career writ large. His bad choices are (sometimes) course-corrected by his ability to wring something winning and human out of characters who would otherwise flatline in the hands of a lesser actor. He’s a veteran of peak ’90s Hollywood,...

This season, Young Sheldon has some big shoes to fill. Ratings giant The Big Bang Theory is gone and now, its spin-off series is expected to take over and anchor CBS' Thursday night. The network obviously has a lot of faith in the program as CBS has already renewed it for a fourth season. But, was that jumping the gun? How will Young Sheldon perform without Big Bang as its lead-in? Could this CBS series still be cancelled? Stay tuned.
A single-camera family comedy series, Young Sheldon stars Iain Armitage, Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Annie Potts, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, Matt Hobby, and Jim Parsons (narration). Recurring cast members include Sarah Baker, John Hartman, and Jayne Taini. Revolving around the early life of The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper (Parsons), this comedy series follows a gifted and naive young Sheldon (Armitage) as he navigates his way through...

Shamy is back! The Big Bang Theory stars Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik, who played adorably nerdy couple Sheldon and Amy on the it CBS sitcom, have partnered for Carla, a new multi-camera comedy from Big Bang studio Warner Bros. TV based on Miranda Hart’s BBC series Miranda.
In a highly competitive situation, with all broadcast networks bidding, the project, starring and executive produced by Bialik and executive produced by Parsons, just landed at Fox with a series order for fall 2020. The network’s willingness to step up in a big way erases any doubt about its commitment to live-action comedy under CEO Charlie Collier and Entertainment President Michael Thorn.

Mission accomplished! One of WarnerMedia brass’ top goals for the company’s upcoming streaming service HBO Max was to have the biggest comedy series of the past couple of decades, Friends and The Big Bang Theory — both produced by sibling Warner Bros. TV — at launch to help drive subscribers to the new offering.
After shelling out $425 million for the exclusive streaming rights to Friends, taking it away from Netflix, HBO Max has secured the exclusive streaming rights to all 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory. This marks the first ever streaming pact for past seasons of the hugely popular series, which recently finished its 12-season run on CBS.
Under the five-year deal, all 279 episodes of Big Bang will be available on HBO Max when it launches in spring of 2020. In conjunction with that, WarnerMedia’s TBS, which has been Big Bang‘s off-network home from the start, has extended its...

Film music has come a long way in the 100+ years since moving images were first accompanied with sound (synchronized or otherwise), but seldom has it ever evolved more radically or aggressively than it did over the last decade. Spurred on by digital technology and/or a general tone of cosmic dissonance, rock and avant-garde musicians like Jonny Greenwood and Mica Levi used narrative projects as inspiration to explore new facets of their genius, while more traditional composers such as Alexandre Desplat and Carter Burwell rose to the challenge by delivering the most beautiful work of their careers. Hans Zimmer went deep into outer space, while Trent Reznor and Atticus Rose plunged head-first into the abyss of being extremely online.

Late Show With Stephen Colbert will finish the 2018-2019 season on top of late-night TV in the demo for the first time. He’s on track to finish about 18,000 ahead of Fallon’s in the key 18-49 age bracket, after trailing by 72K last season.
The milestone marks the first Late Show demo win since Colbert took over as host and first overall since the 1994-95 season.
Colbert also will mark his third consecutive win in overall audience, this time with a larger-than-last-season lead of 1.37 million viewers – up from the previous season’s 1.2M margin. It marks the program’s longest winning streak and largest margin for CBS over The Tonight Show since the 1993-94 TV season.

We are dead serious when say the penultimate scene in last week’s Big Bang Theory series finale was exceptional.
In what is believed to be a first for the CBS sitcom, the tense sequence — which found Mayim Bialik‘s Amy dispensing some tough love to Jim Parsons‘ Sheldon after he alienated his friends for the umpteenth time — was completely, deliberately jest-free.

CBS’ The Big Bang Theory series finale sucked much of the oxygen out of Thursday night in primetime, clocking its biggest crowd in more than three years and its best demo rating since the middle of last season.
Spinoff Young Sheldon’s season ender basked in that lead-in, bagging its best overall crowd since January and matching last May’s finale in the demo.
One Big Bang farewell fond-look-back special later, a S.W.A.T. season finale sent CBS tumbling, but managed to tie that franchise’s season best.
Meanwhile, among season finales not featuring Sheldon Cooper, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy fared best, though falling 32% in the demo from its year-ago closer, which had not faced a Big Bang so-long. In fact, it did not face an original Big Bang Theory episode at all, CBS having wrapped its Thursday comedies one week earlier.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Hawaii Five-0, The Flash, New Amsterdam and The Big Bang Theory!

Updated with fast nationals: An average of 18 million people watched the 279th and final episode of history-making hit CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory Thursday night. The finale scored a 3.1 rating in the key 18-49 demographic group in its two-hour finale.
The longest running multi-cam comedy series in U.S. TV history ends its 12-season run as the top entertainment series in its final year in total viewers. It’s the first series able to make that claim since NBC’s Seinfeld did so, 21 years ago.
The 3.1 is up a modest 7% from the year-ago finale: a 2.9 on May 10, 2018. It’s the show’s high in that metric since January 11 (3.1). The last time Big Bang topped a 3.1 was its final season starter on Monday, September 25, 2018, which logged a 4.1 rating.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains details of The Big Bang Theory series finale that aired tonight.
In the end, The Big Bang Theory took the prize with a series finale that delivered satisfying surprises for all of the core characters but kept hold of the show’s taut pace, tart zingers, and deadpan irony despite all the obvious temptations to over-inflate the comedy vehicle beyond its specifications. The 279th and final episode of the history-making CBS hit comedy, which finished its 12-year mission with a picture-perfect landing that was capped, fittingly, by an award acceptance speech by Jim Parsons.

Never let be said that Bill Prady wasted his chance to explore the awkwardness of his life as a young adult.
The co-creator of Warner Bros. TV’s “The Big Bang Theory” mined his experiences working as a computer programmer in the early 1980s to launch the powerhouse CBS sitcom that bows out Thursday after 12 seasons. For Prady, the finale represents the end of an era, in more ways than one.
“‘Big Bang’ began as the story of me in my early 20s, when I was in the computer business in New York and failing at romantic relationships,” Prady tells Variety. “It’s the story of that time in my life and I knew I’d get one shot to tell those stories. I don’t think I get to come back and re-explore that time again. For me, [the finale] winds up the chance I had to talk about what that time was like.

“I took the Nintendo controller belt buckle that I wore in the pilot,” Helberg shares. “It’s small and indestructible and it means something to me. The character came together fully when I put on that crazy wardrobe that [Big Bang costume guru] Mary Quigley designed so brilliantly.”

After a record-setting 12 seasons and 279 episodes, The Big Bang Theory comes to an end this Thursday (CBS, 8/7c). But to truly appreciate just how far our favorite geniuses have come, we need to go back to the very beginning.
In the lead-up to Tbbt‘s swan song, TVLine has revisited the episode that started it all. No, not the unaired, 2006 pilot that only exists in the deepest, darkest corners of the Internet, but the reshot pilot that became the actual series premiere, which aired on Monday, Sept. 24, 2007.
Our rewatch left us with more questions than answers. Among them: What ever happened to Penny’s screenplay?...

The Big Bang Theory will end its 12-year run on CBS next week, but Jim Parsons will continue to embody the character of Sheldon Cooper for years to come, courtesy of his narrator role on Young Sheldon. According to the Emmy winner, maintaining the former gig “probably” cushions the blow of losing the latter one.
“I will still speak from [Sheldon]’s vantage point,” Parsons acknowledges to TVLine in the above video interview, conducted at last week’s Big Bang wrap party. (Quick disclaimer: Parsons is involved in the potential film adaptation of my book, Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies.) “In fact,...

Just two weeks away from its May 16 series finale, CBS’ The Big Bang Theory dominated Thursday night in both metrics, gaining 327,000 total viewers to win 8 Pm by a margin of more than 5M viewers, while tying its previous week’s series demo low.
Similar story for CBS’ Young Sheldon, which finished first in its slot across the board, matching a series low in the demo while gaining 68K total viewers week to week.
The network’s Mom ticked up a tenth in the demo.
After the prior week’s preemption for NFL Draft coverage, and against Big Bang-fueled CBS, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy crossover with Station 19 boosted both shows. Grey’s grew by a tenth in the demo and about 700K viewers to draw its biggest audience in five weeks. Station 19 shot up by about 1.4M total viewers...

The Big Bang Theory cast taped their last episode of the CBS comedy Tuesday evening on the Warner Bros. lot, but Johnny Galecki held off on bidding his character goodbye until shortly after the lights dimmed on Stage 25. As he recounted to TVLine at the show’s wrap party on Wednesday, “I took a little walk by myself around the [soundstage] after we wrapped and kind of said goodbye to Leonard — as odd and crazy as that sounds.”
The emotional impact of the historic night hit Galecki hard, the actor admitted. “I was so worried about [co-star] Kaley [Cuoco] and her being overcome with emotion,...

A busy night on broadcast primetime saw the first night of the NFL Draft on ABC go up against the likes of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon as well as three finales.
In the end, the three-and-a-half-hour NFL Draft, which also aired on ESPN and NFL Network, grew a tenth and in total viewers compared with last year’s showcase on Fox, leading ABC to take Thursday’s top demo spot. Still it was Big Bang Theory and Sheldon who swept the night’s top spots in demo and viewers, giving CBS the nightly win in the latter metric. (ESPN and NFL Network numbers will come later today.)
Big Bang continued its later-season ratings dip, however, falling two tenths to a series low. Young Sheldon, back from a hiatus, was off a tenth.

The Big Bang Theory series finale is still three weeks away, but for the comedy’s ensemble, the end is very much nigh. The finale is set to tape in a matter of days (Tuesday, April 30 to be precise), a sobering fact that was underscored this week when the cast received the script for the swan song.
Early Wednesday ahead of the final table read, Kaley Cuoco shared on Instagram a simple image of the script’s cover page — featuring nothing but a watermark of her name and the words “End of Series” — above the caption, “Yea, didn’t sleep.

CBS was No. 1 on Thursday in the key 18-49 age bracket and total viewers as The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon returned to easily beat combined competition and finish as primetime’s most watched shows.
That said, Big Bang hit a series low in its first original in four weeks, after a repeat and two weeks off for Ncaa preemption. Ditto Young Sheldon, which previously had not skidded lower than a 1.6 demo rating. Versus their prior originals of four weeks ago, Big Bang dropped two tenths as its series finale looms while Sheldon dropped three tenths.
CBS’ Mom, Fam and S.W.A.T. returned after two weeks off. Mom finished first in both metrics at 9 Pm. After which, first-year comedy Fam grew in total viewers versus its last original but matched its lowest demo rating to date and lowest yet with a regular Mom lead-in.

Arya Stark is a bona-fide badass, and so is the lady who plays her, English actress Maisie Williams. Despite her ascension to superstardom at just 12 years old, when she first auditioned to play sword-wielding, patriarchy-crushing avenger Arya on Game of Thrones, you might not know all that much about the relatively private, newly pink-haired actress. You'll see her in plenty of upcoming projects over the next couple of years once HBO airs the final season of Game of Thrones, but in the meantime, here are a couple of interesting facts we bet you never knew about the now-21-year-old star.
Maisie began performing in school plays as a young girl, but her first passion was actually dance. She began taking formal lessons at the age of 10 at Susan Hill's School of Dance, though her parents couldn't afford to send her to a performing arts school.

While the Young Sheldon TV show didn't beat out its parent-series, The Big Bang Theory, in the Nielsen ratings race, it was still a top-three performer during its freshman year on CBS. Now that the prequel is back for a second season, which coincides with Big Bang's final outing, can it pull in an even larger audience? Will Young Sheldon be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
A CBS single-camera comedy, Young Sheldon stars Iain Armitage, Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Annie Potts, Montana Jordan, and Raegan Revord, with Jim Parsons narrating. Season two of the sitcom unfolds in 1990 and centers on Sheldon Cooper (Armitage), as a 10-year-old boy. Surviving childhood in an East Texas outpost — one dedicated to all things faith and football — is no mean feat for this unique genius and his otherwise ordinary family.

CBS welcomed back The Big Bang Theory after two weeks off and saw it dominate the primetime landscape Thursday, taking the tops spots in the demo and viewership and, teaming with Young Sheldon, the night’s No. 2 ranked how in both metrics, gave the network an overall win on the night.
That said, Big Bang had looked like it was building momentum toward its finale but returned last night with a 2.3, down 12% vs. that 2.6 for its prior original.
After those two shows, Mom and Fam were up week to week, and most watched in their timeslots. While Fam’s retention of Mom’s numbers is a little less than usual, the rookie comedy’s demo data could round up when official nationals come in, in which case it’s retention would be routine.

CBS is doubling down on The Big Bang Theory‘s heir apparent, renewing Young Sheldon for Seasons 3 and 4.
The Young Sheldon renewal guarantees that the Big Bang prequel spinoff will remain on the air through at least the 2020-21 TV season. The news comes just two weeks after fellow Chuck Lorre sitcom Mom was picked up for Seasons 7 and 8.
Young Sheldon this season is averaging north of 11 million weekly viewers and a 1.8 demo rating, ranking third (behind Big Bang and NCIS) and second (trailing Big Bang) among all CBS programs. With Live+7 DVR playback factored in, it flirts with 15 million viewers and pulls a 2.7 rating.

CBS has renewed its soon-to-be No.1 comedy series Young Sheldon for two additional seasons, beginning with the 2019-2020 broadcast season. With the pickup, the network has secured both of Chuck Lorre’s current comedy series slated to go beyond this season for 2 more years, after a similar 2-season pickup for veteran Mom earlier this month.
The Big Bang Theory spinoff is television’s No. 2 most-watched comedy, behind only its lead-in and precursor, Big Bang, averaging over 14.5 million viewers each week. And with Big Bang ending its run in May after 12 seasons, Young Sheldon had been tipped to possibly succeed it on the schedule next season.
“Thanks to Chuck Lorre’s and Steve Molaro’s outstanding creative leadership, Young Sheldon has been a powerful performer for the Network with an audience that towers over most of the television landscape,” Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment, said today in making the renewal announcement.

With The Big Bang Theory coming to its big bye-bye, the cast gets together for something of an early exit interview on today’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. He may have the same piercing baby blues as The End of the F***ing World's Alex Lawther and The Good Doctor's Freddie Highmore, but believe it or not, neither Lawther nor Highmore is the actor who plays Otis Milburn on the Netflix series Sex Education. Otis - an inexperienced high school student who decides to team up with a bad girl and open an underground sex therapy clinic at school, thanks to the advice bestowed on him by his sex therapist mother - is actually played by Asa Butterfield, and if you don't recognize his name, then you should. The 21-year-old English actor began his career at the ripe age of 9, and we have a feeling that Sex Education is not the first time you've seen him on the screen.

Patton Oswalt is known to argue about politics on Twitter, but on Thursday the comedian responded to an insult from someone who disagreed with him about President Trump by organizing his fans to help pay the man’s medical bills.
It started after Oswalt tweeted a rhyme that mocked something Trump said about his border wall plan, which is at the center of the government shutdown. Twitter user Michael Beatty responded to Oswalt’s tweet with an insult of his own: “I just realized why I was so happy you died in Blade Trinity!”
But instead of escalating, Oswalt looked over Beatty’s Twitter feed and learned he had established a Gofundme account to help pay bills after a hospitalization for sepsis and diabetic ketoacidosis, and fell into a coma. Oswalt urged his fans to donate.
