Last year, author Grady Hendrix contributed the 29 page short story Ankle Snatcher (you can read it Here) to the Amazon Original Stories Creature Feature collection, which also featured stories by Joe Hill, Josh Malerman, Paul Tremblay, Jason Mott, and Chandler Baker. Now, Deadline reports that Sony has acquired the rights to make a feature film adaptation of Ankle Snatcher.
Hendrix’s story follows Marcus, who grew up believing his father killed his mother — then blamed it on the boogeyman under the bed. Always leave the lights on, his father warned, or the boogeyman will get you. Marcus still heeds the superstition, especially when he invites his new girlfriend over. Is Marcus haunted by a creature or has he just inherited his father’s murderous delusions? The night will tell.
Hendrix will be producing the film alongside Escape Artist’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Tony Shaw, and Aperture Entertainment’s Adam Goldworm.

My to-be-read pile is shamefully big, but that never stops me from adding more. I cherish getting lost in a good book, but a novel is more of a commitment than chipping away at movies on my to-watch list. The conspicuously titled 101 Horror Books to Read Before You’re Murdered may make that stack of books to read even more intimidating, but it also helps narrow down which tales of terror are worthy of being moved to the top.
Following a foreword by Bird Box author Josh Malerman, writer Sadie “Mother Horror” Hartmann explains why you should trust her choices implicitly. As the owner of the horror fiction subscription service Night Worms and the editor-in-chief of publisher Dark Hart Books, she’s an unassailable authority on horror literature — even if she’s a self-proclaimed scaredy cat who rarely watches genre movies.

Based on Josh Malerman’s novel of the same title, Netflix released the survival thriller Bird Box in 2018, featuring Sandra Bullock in the lead role. This film explored the themes of complexities in human nature, grief and trauma acting as an evil force, and the relentless pursuit of survival. By portraying a nightmarish apocalypse, the film effectively highlights the inner demons faced by the protagonist. However, the spinoff movie Bird Box: Barcelona, which maintains a strong connection with its predecessor, introduced a touch of innovation to the storyline.
The core of Bird Box: Barcelona revolves around Sebastian (Mario Casas), a survivor who embarks on a harrowing journey of self-discovery, questioning whether he is destined to save or destroy humanity. The spinoff film presented an intriguing premise by depicting the global impact of the unseen and unknown entity in the film. The plot unfolded in the European setting of Barcelona, showcasing...

Five years ago seems aeons in an era so disrupted by Covid. So it comes as a surprise to realize that the original screen “Bird Box” arrived a full 14 months or so in advance of pandemic restrictions — becoming an early Netflix pop-culture phenomenon before lockdown made that sort of thing a regular occurrence. Susanne Bier’s film of Josh Malerman’s sci-fi horror novel was intriguing and suspenseful enough, even if its emphasis on psychological drama over thrills made for a somewhat unlikely breakout hit.
Inevitably, if belatedly, there’s now a follow-up — but not an adaptation of Malerman’s own print sequel, which continued the travails of the character played by Sandra Bullock. Instead, “Bird Box Barcelona” is a “parallel story” set on another continent entirely. Written and directed by Alex and David Pastor, whose prior genre efforts “The Last Days” (2013) and “Carriers” (2009) both had similar basic premises, it...

Plot: After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows.
Review: Released eight months after John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, Bird Box became a hit for Netflix. In the five years since Susanne Bier’s film debuted, author Josh Malerman has penned a sequel novel while a film follow-up has been in development. The first of multiple global spin-offs, Bird Box Barcelona continues the tale of supernatural entities that force people to commit grisly suicide. Existing in the same post-apocalyptic universe as the Sandra Bullock-led hit film, Bird Box Barcelona manages to weave a distinct story while unveiling new details about the monstrous beings by taking the story in an unexpected direction.

Five years after the original "Bird Box" became an absolute sensation on Netflix, we're finally getting a follow-up. While it's not a proper sequel, it is more of a spin-off taking place elsewhere in the world. In this case, Spain, which is why the forthcoming movie is aptly titled "Bird Box Barcelona." That also has a nice alliterative ring to it. But that's about the only thing about this movie that looks nice, as it seems absolutely chaotic and tense.
This appears to be going with a very similar conceit as the original film, with survivors trying to avoid eye contact with the mysterious beings at the center of this disaster at all costs. It's a new group of people in an entirely new location. What will those new elements bring to the table? Let's have a look-see.

In today's news of slightly unnecessary projects, Netflix is reviving its hit original film "Bird Box" with a sequel-extension film called "Bird Box Barcelona." You read that right, we're getting another "Bird Box" film, but seemingly one that is simply adjacent to, and not a continuation of, the events of the original. Interesting.
Netflix debuted a one-minute teaser trailer for the new film — which was announced back in March 2021 — and it gives us a glimpse into a similar event as the 2018 film, only in Europe this time. There is chaos in major cities, and folks turn to obscuring their sight in the outside world in order to obtain shelter. Again, it's very much a global repositioning of the events of the first film, however, it does seem like this new story will have some of its own twists and turns.

Remember a few years back, when the world was briefly obsessed with Bird Box? Netflix and adapted from Josh Malerman’s novel, received solid reviews and was a huge hit on the streaming service. It even spawned a viral ‘Bird Box challenge’. Well, now the world of Bird Box is back, and it’s heading to Barcelona.
It’s not quite a Cloverfield Paradox surprise release, but the announcement of the simply-titled Bird Box Barcelona does come pretty much out of the blue – it’s out in two months’ time, 14 July to be exact, and hasn’t been a part of Netflix’s recent slate announcements. Check out the first teaser here:
There you have it, then – it’s Bird Box, in Barcelona. By the sounds of it, this one will be a prequel-of-sorts, exploring the initial ‘outbreak’ in Spain, with new characters, new locations, and the same existential terror.

Back at the end of 2018, Netflix had a huge hit with their apocalyptic horror thriller Bird Box, based on a novel by Josh Malerman (pick up a copy Here). While Malerman has written a Bird Box sequel called Malorie (buy that one Here), Netflix has been focusing on the idea of producing Bird Box spin-offs that will be set in various locations around the globe. First up is a spin-off that’s set in Spain and was written and directed by Alex and David Pastor. While we’ve previously heard that this spin-off was going by the title A Ciegas, which happens to have been the Spanish title used for the first Bird Box, Netflix has now announced that the film is officially titled Bird Box Barcelona – and it will be available to watch on the streaming service as of July 14th!

Exclusive: QC Entertainment, the production company behind recent Best Picture Oscar contenders BlacKkKlansman and Get Out, has snapped up rights to J.D. Barker’s forthcoming erotic thriller novel Behind a Closed Door in a preemptive bid, with plans to adapt it for film.
The acquisition follows QC’s work with Barker on The Fourth Monkey, a show to adapt his award-winning, bestselling novel series of the same name. QC will, as in that case, produce alongside Spin a Black Yarn, which reps the writer.
Billed as 50 Shades of Grey meets David Fincher’s The Game, Behind a Closed Door introduces readers to Sugar & Spice, the latest app craze taking the world by storm, which leads downloaders Abby and Brendan Hollander into a dangerous game of life and death. When the app assigns the pair a series of increasingly taboo tasks, they soon find themselves caught up in a twisted web of seduction and violence.

The Writers Guild told members on Thursday that an arbitration with Netflix over the 2018 Sandra Bullock film Bird Box has resulted in members receiving 42 million in previously unpaid residuals.
A third-party arbitrator in the Bird Box case found that Netflix had underpaid residuals on the film, according to the Guild, thus awarding the film’s writer 850,000 in total residuals with 350,000 in interest. (Arrival screenwriter Eric Heisserer wrote the film, based on the novel of the same name by Josh Malerman.)
“As a direct result of this ruling, 216 writers on 139 other Netflix theatrical films are receiving an additional 42 million in unpaid residuals,” the Writers Guild of America East wrote to members in an email on Thursday. “The Guild is now pursuing approximately 13.5 million in interest Netflix also owes writers for late payment of these residuals.” The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Netflix for comment.

Charlize Theron famously buzzed her locks for her turn as Furiosa in “Fury Road.”

Since “Shadow and Bone” premiered on Netflix on April 23, the fantasy epic series has been a fixture at or near the top of the streamer’s Top 10 lists in the U.S. and worldwide. Audiences have devoured its story of orphaned mapmaker Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), who discovers she holds the unique — and life-changing — power to summon light as powerful as the sun. Those powers separate Alina from her best friend Mal (Archie Renaux), place her under the wing of the mysterious and equally powerful General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), and provide the fantasy kingdom of Ravka with its first real chance of destroying the Shadow Fold, a massive and malevolent dark storm that has riven Ravka for centuries.

The Bird Box universe is expanding with a Spanish-language spinoff, we can reveal.
The movie will reunite Netflix with Bird Box producers Dylan Clark (The Batman) and Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw), but it will also have a distinctly Spanish flavor.
Writer-directors will be Spanish duo Alex and David Pastor, best known for 2020 Netflix thriller The Occupant and 2009 pandemic thriller Carriers, as well as Syfy series Incorporated and recent HBO Max series The Head, both of which they created.
Producing for Spanish outfit Nostromo Pictures will be Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls, producers of The Occupant and Spanish hit The Invisible Guest. Guerra is also well known as the producer of Ryan Reynolds box office breakout Buried.
The yet to be titled film, which will sit within David Kosse’s local-language slate at the streamer, is due to start production towards the end of this year in Spain.

Bird Box was a massive hit for Netflix when it reached the streaming service in late 2018. The post-apocalyptic horror movie was based on the novel of the same name by Josh Malerman and is set in a world populated by evil supernatural creatures that drive anyone who sees them insane.
Despite a tepid critical reception, audiences loved it, with over 26 million viewers watching it over its first week of release in the US alone. It’s currently sitting pretty on a huge 89 million views, making it the second-most-watched Netflix original movie, though it also spawned the questionable Bird Box challenge on TikTok, resulting in a warning from police to knock it off after a teenager wearing a blindfold drove into oncoming traffic and crashed.
It’s not a huge surprise that we’re hearing word of a sequel, then, especially as one comes ready-made in the form of Malerman’s recent novel Malorie.

When Josh Malerman’s debut novel Bird Box landed in 2014, it was a critical and financial success and quickly found itself optioned for a movie, despite being apparently ‘unfilmable’. The movie arrived on Netflix in 2018, starring Sandra Bullock and was a storming success for the streaming channel. Hot on the heels of the buzz around John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, Bird Box was likened to that movie, switched hearing for vision. The premise was simple: Earth has been invaded by mysterious creatures. If you look at them, you go mad and kill yourself.
The book worked wonderfully, telling the survival story from the point of view of Malorie over the space of around five years, from her falling pregnant, the creatures invading, and her trying to keep her child and that of another now deceased woman safe in this new world. Malorie never sees the creatures so the readers don’t either,...
