Exclusive: Film Bridge International is launching sales at AFM on horror Xelter, whose producers include The De Laurentiis Company (Hannibal) and Head Gear Films (Talk To Me).
The period horror film directed by Martin Bonnici is currently in production in Malta, with a cast of Maltese newcomers alongside actors including Brit Bobby Schofield (The Covenant) and Irish actor Moe Dunford (Vikings).
The WWII-set movie charts the legend of the Babaw, a supernatural creature known for stalking and killing children. The film, inspired by true historical events, sees citizens of Malta take shelter from Nazi bombardment in the ancient catacombs underneath the cities, where they suffered deadly peril from collapsing tunnels and entrapment. That experience scarred a generation, and led to stories about creatures that stole children who strayed too far away from their parents.
Screenplay was written by Scottish screenwriter and comics writer Emma Beeby, based on a story Beeby wrote with Gordon Rennie.

Fantastic Fest 2018 Interview: Star and Co-Writer Joe Azzopardi on the Cinematic Journey of The Boat
While you may get some instant survival vibes when reading the premise of Winston Azzopardi’s The Boat, there are also some other genre elements at play that begin to reveal themselves the more time we spend upon the eponymous water vehicle, making The Boat a quietly surprising viewing experience.
While at Fantastic Fest 2018, Daily Dead caught up with Joe Azzopardi, the star and co-writer of The Boat, to discuss how this project evolved from a previous short film he had collaborated with his dad on, and how they came together for this feature project. Joe also discussed some of the physical challenges he faced during production, as well as finding ways to tap into his character, who has very minimal dialogue, but appears in every single scene of The Boat, which wasn’t an easy feat by any means.
I’m sure you’ve heard a few comparisons to Dead Calm so far,...

"I am sick of this game!" The first official trailer has launched for a creepy new sailing survival film titled simply The Boat, the feature directorial debut of producer Winston Azzopardi. Starring his own son Joe Azzopardi as the sailor, the film is about a captain who goes out to see and finds an abandoned vessel, but discovers there's something mysterious going on. He ends up locked inside the head of a sailboat which is heading at full steam on autopilot. Where to? There's only one way to find out. This looks creepy and very clever, a bit more than just another lost at sea sailing movie. This is premiering at Fantastic Fest later in the month, which is why this trailer has been released to build some buzz for its premiere there. Worth a watch.
