Los Angeles — Even dog actors can get awards in Tinseltown, and six pooches collected prizes at the inaugural Golden Collar Awards.
The ceremony Monday at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel proceeded like a traditional Hollywood-style awards show, with actors including "NCIS" star Pauley Perrette and "Hot in Cleveland" star Wendie Malick presenting trophies for the best dog performances on the big and small screens.
Uggie, the four-legged star of "The Artist," was named top dog in a movie. His owner-trainer, Omar Von Muller, was on hand to accept the award.
Von Muller said the Jack Russell terrier, who stole hearts in the silent film that's up for 10 Academy Awards, is a "great performer, but he's also a great family member."
"He sleeps with us," Von Muller said.

You may not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but you can certainly give him a few awards for them.
Last night, while dogs around the country were begging for Milk Bones, an elite group, including Uggie, the furry star of "The Artist," were competing for Golden Collar Awards for the most creative canines in the entertainment industry.
The awards were founded in late 2011 by Dog News Daily, a marketing and digital media company, who created the Golden Collars after hearing the buzz surrounding Uggie's performance, and it looks like the hype paid off.
The 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier was nominated for the Best Dog in a Theatrical Film award for his work in both "Water for Elephants" and "The Artist," bringing home the night's big award for the latter.
Other winners included Brigitte, who plays Jay and Gloria's lovably dopey dog, Stella, on "Modern Family,...

Deadline contributor Diane Haithman filed this report. Despite some earnest lobbying by director Martin Scorsese, the little dog from The Artist tonight snatched the Golden Collar Award for Best Dog in a Theatrical Film away from the big dog in Scorsese’s Hugo. That’s right — scene-stealer Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier who barks silently in The Artist, proved that at least for dogs, the cute comic canine tends to win out over a serious actress like Blackie, who portrays the scary Doberman guard dog who hounds the children in Hugo. This has indeed been a big year for dogs, if not a year for big dogs, in movies. The other nominees in this category included Denver, who played Skeletor in 50/50, Hummer as Dolce in Young Adult; Cosmo as Arthur in Beginners. Uggie was a dual nominee: he also played Queenie in Water For Elephants. It’s hard to say...

Martin Scorsese knows a thing or two about painful awards snubs. Not this year, mind you, as his cinematic love letter Hugo leads the Oscar race, but certainly in years past. Perhaps that’s why the legendary director felt so compelled to launch a campaign to get Blackie, the law-enforcing Doberman from Hugo, rightfully nominated for a Golden Collar Award. (“I’m proud of Blackie, who laid it on the line and dared to risk the sympathy of her audience. Let’s just say that on the set, she had a fitting nickname: Citizen Canine. The bath scene alone is a masterpiece of underplaying,...

Hollywood do-godders often wring their hands over the persistence of racism or sexism. Now there's a new scourge: breedism. According to Martin Scorsese, that's what's at work in this year's Best Movie Dog awards race, given the favoritism shown at the upcoming first annual Golden Collar prizes to "The Artist" star Uggie. Specifically, the director is miffed that, while the fuzzy Jack Russell terrier is nominated for work in two films (both "The Artist" and "Water for Elephants"), Blackie the Doberman Pinscher from Scorsese's own "Hugo" was shut out of the nominations. In an editorial in the Los Angeles Times, Scorsese argues that moviegoers (and animal lovers) have an unjustified prejudice favoring Jack Russells over Dobermans. The former are cute and adorable, the latter hulking and fearsome. Hence the awards love for Uggie, whose performance as a resourceful and heroic pet in "The Artist" has made the four-legged star a red-carpet fixture this season,...

As we announced on our podcast this past Friday, the Weinstein Co. are supplying us with what I have since learned are two (2) posters from The Artist, one (1) with signatures from stars Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo and writer/director Michel Hazanavicius and the other is signed by Uggie, the dog that has taken the world by storm and, not to mention, has just announced his retirement. Uggie was seen in both The Artist and Water for Elephants last year and was one of many canines to take over the film world alongside the likes of Cosmo from Beginners, Hummer from Young Adult and Blackie from Hugo. And now is your opportunity to get a piece of memorabilia that I personally think is one of the few pieces of studio provided goodies actually worth owning. So how can you enter to win one (1) of these posters? Well, that's actually quite easy and several already have.

Martin Scorsese has launched a campaign to land the canine star of his movie Hugo a Golden Collar Award nomination.
The legendary director was upset after Blackie the Doberman failed to secure a nod for Best Dog In A Theatrical Film at the annual prizegiving, which recognises the most talented pooches in Hollywood.
He wrote a letter to the Los Angeles Times to complain about Blackie's snub, and pointed out that Uggie the Jack Russell scored two nominations for The Artist and Water for Elephants.
Scorsese ranted, "How could she not be nominated? Jack Russell terriers are small and cute. Dobermans are enormous and handsome. More tellingly, Uggie plays a nice little mascot who does tricks and saves his master's life in one of the films, while Blackie gives an uncompromising performance as a ferocious guard dog who terrorises children.
"I'm proud of Blackie, who laid it on the line and dared to risk the sympathy of her audience."
Dog News Daily organisers have agreed to include Blackie in the category if 500 fan nominations are received via Facebook.com.
Also competing for Top Dog are Cosmo from Ewan McGregor's drama Beginners, Denver of the comedy 50/50, and Young Adult's dog star Hummer.
