You know that subtle annoyance you feel as you’re watching football on the TV? That niggling irritation you feel as you listen to football conversations in the pub? That impulse you can’t seem to control that makes you detox from football every fifth year of your life? Have no fear, for many of us share the same symptoms; we are all suffering from Football Cliche Aversion.
While your extreme responses are a good thing – this is just your immune system trying to protect you – you’re at greater risk of developing Cliche Syndrome yourself if you spend a lot of time digesting the views of football pundits and former players turned television personalities. The syndrome creeps up slowly: first you start quoting John Motson, then you’re laughing at Lineker’s jokes. Before you know it you’re fully parroting Alan Shearer with a bit of Lawro thrown in for poetic advantage,...

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle have been offered the chance to resign Loic Remy on loan for the rest of the season. The 29-year-old is being mooted as a quick fix option for January, as the Magpies look to add to their poor goals tally and even poorer league position.
But would it really be the right decision?
At 29, Remy isn’t exactly a spring chicken, and though he’s still looked sharp when he’s got playing time for Chelsea, he’s not playing all that regularly and Newcastle would run the risk of waiting for him to get back to sharpness. That’s arguably better than looking to sign a young European striker with no experience of the Premier League, but it’s still something of a gamble.
At this stage, the options for Newcastle are being suggested as Charlie Austin, someone unknown who...

It’s not often that I write a list where it’s harder to condense ideas rather than devise them but creating a feature involving unsuccessful players at Newcastle United is as simple as getting Brendan Rodgers to talk about himself.
The sorting process is relatively simple. You just have to ask three questions. Did the player play during Kevin Keegan’s 1995-96 or Bobby Robson’s 2001-04? Is the player Alan Shearer? Were they part of Alan Pardew’s remarkable fifth place finish in 2011-12? Right, now if the answer is no for each then they were probably a Tyneside failure.
Obviously there are a few exceptions (Antoine Sibierski for starters): a handful of players have escaped the shame of being placed on this list as my warm heart believes they were either poorly managed or not really expected to be any good in the first place.

To steal a phrase from page one of Michael Owen’s book of Premier League cliches, yesterday’s matchup between Newcastle United and Manchester City was a game of two halves.
The first period saw the away side well on top. The black and whites continued with their new fearlessly bullish approach that worked so well against champions Chelsea a week prior. Steve McClaren’s side weathered an early storm to take the lead through a stooping Aleksandar Mitrovic header. They should have doubled their lead but a tap in for the Serbian was wrongly ruled offside, before the 21-year-old had a one-on-one brilliantly saved by the toe-end of Joe Hart.
All was going well.
One thing I noticed sitting in the Etihad’s press box was how United’s touchline management team of McClaren and Paul Simpson were conducting their business.

Georginio Wijnaldum certainly made the best impression possible at Newcastle United. Just 48 minutes into his Barclays Premier League debut for the Magpies, the £14.5 million summer signing from Psv Eindhoven rose in the Southampton area to meet a delicious Gabriel Obertan cross and power home a header.
Signed to add goals to a Toon midfield severely lacking in such an area – Wijnaldum netted 14 times in 33 league games as he captained Psv to the Eredivisie title last season – the 24-year-old Dutchman made the perfect start by delivering on his Newcastle bow.
Strangely, however, scoring on Premier League debuts is not something Newcastle United players have done very often since their first appearance in the reformed league in 1993-94.
In fact, Wijnaldum is just the seventh player to achieve such a feat. Michael Owen didn’t manage it. Demba Ba failed to do so. Heck, even Newcastle’s favourite son...

Newcastle United have received backing from an unlikely source – with former Magpies striker Michael Owen predicting they could achieve a “top-10 placing” in the Barclays Premier League this season.
Robbie Savage claimed earlier in the week that he “feared” for the Magpies and expects them to “struggle” under McClaren, but Newcastle’s record signing – and now BT Sport pundit – disagrees.
Describing McClaren as “one of the best coaches” he ever worked with, former Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Owen believes the ex-England boss could “do well” during the 2015-16 campaign.

In particular, Owen seems impressed by Newcastle’s acquisitions of Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba.
Speaking to Colossus Bets, Owen said:
“I think Steve McClaren could do well at Newcastle.

On the August 24th 2005, Newcastle United announced that they had agreed a record-breaking fee of £16.8 million to sign Michael Owen from Real Madrid.
Uncontrollable optimism seeped through St James’ Park as the former Real Madrid striker – clad in the black-and-white Northern Rock-sponsored kit – was presented to 15,000 ecstatic Geordies. The signing represented ambition, hope and a genuine first-class striker who fans could idolise in the way they had with Alan Shearer.
But the pedestal on which Owen stood as fans in the Sir John Hall stand gawped at their new No 10 has not been seen again in the ensuing 10 years. Deconstructed and slid into the St James’ Park storage cellar, ancient vibrations still circulating in the metal tubes are all that remain of that raucous applause and joyous celebration. Despite a couple of decent signings this summer, Aleksandar Mitrovic for £13 million and Georginio Wijnaldum for £14.5 million,...

Although Newcastle fans may have got their dream present this Christmas with Alan Pardew’s impending exit from St. James’ Park, a troubling anxiety over what happens next has crept in. “Sack Pardew” may have been the cry for months but few would have been able to tell you who should be in charge instead. The focus was so aggressive on Pardew out that nobody even thought about what the follow-up would be if it actually happened.
Even the bookies don’t quite know what the future holds. The “odds on favourite” has changed frequently and randomly. Frank de Boer, the early favourite, was quickly dismissed as a non-starter when representatives said he wouldn’t leave Ajax this season. Next favourite, Tony Pulis, looks now to be West Brom bound… any chance of Newcastle hiring the former Palace manager ending when Ashley stalled on him (likely...

The Ballon d’Or hasn’t been won by a player has become so formulaic in recent years that it might as well be named the ‘Ronaldo or Messi’ Award. The last player to have won the prize was Brazilian superstar Kaka, and that was seven years ago. He is now 32 years old and back playing in Brazil, having been omitted from his country’s squad for the World Cup.
The rest of the shortlisted players know they are only there to buff up the numbers, and the highest they can realistically hope to aim for is third, behind the godlike duo who seem destined to fight it out each year until retirement. However, the Ballon d’Or wasn’t always so predictable – indeed, it was often a genuine mystery as to who was even going to appear in the top three each year for a while.

Another England squad, another snub for most of the North East’s best English players. No surprise there then, but once again Roy Hodgson has included some players who seem to be being picked not on merit, but on their names.
Yes, Rolando Aarons is not quite match fit at the minute, and he’s not played a great deal of football this season, but as a substitute for England, he would be a massive secret weapon, particularly as the squad is so set up for pace. But the best he gets is a place in the U20 squad – a waste of time.
And what of Jack Colback and Steven Taylor, two of the hardest working stars of Newcastle’s five game unbeaten run in all competitions?
In truth, Colback and Taylor aren’t the most likely of England candidates, though both have attracted selection calls in the past,...

Since the Premier League began in 1992, Liverpool have suffered numerous highs and lows. Graeme Souness and Roy Hodgson both did their level best to drag the club into obscurity during their respective reigns as manager, while Gerard Houlller, Rafa Benitez and, currently, Brendan Rodgers, have all come close to bringing the glory days back to Anfield.
Throughout that time, some wonderful players have represented the Reds. Whether it be commanding centre-backs, world-class midfielders or lethal strikers, Liverpool have had it in abundance. The hardest thing is whittling down all those great players to a single best starting 11.
Who makes the cut up front out out of Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez? Which midfield enforcer gets the nod out of Didi Hamann and Javier Mascherano?

Since the Premier League began in 1992, Liverpool have scored nearly 1,400 goals. There have been tap-ins, headers, own goals, deflections and penalties in abundance, but when it comes to your side finding the back of the net, nothing beats an absolute screamer, or a piece of individual genius. They are the ones that stick in the memory forever.
There are over 20 years of Premier League stunners to choose from, from various different players- some legends, some cult heroes and some even terrible players- but whittling them down to a top 10 has proved extremely difficult. How can Michael Owen’s wonderful solo effort against Newcastle in 1998 be left out? And surely Daniel Sturridge’s outrageous chip against West Brom last season makes the cut?
As hard as it was for them not to be selected, they have been left out. In fairness, it’s understandable when you realise...

How many films have you seen? Michael Owen could count them on the toes of his footballing feet. The England striker turned pundit told his three million Twitter followers this week: "Watched my eighth ever film on the flight home. Must have been bored. #HateFilms". Owen, who had been on business in China, then offered a list of "Films I've been forced to watch", including Rocky, Ghost, and Cool Runnings.

Of all the ridiculous things that Michael Owen has said in his career – both during and after his playing days – his confession on Twitter that he has only seen eight films in his whole life, and all were forced upon him, was one of the most difficult to take.
What sort of joyless miserablist denounced an entire industry, and one of the most important mediums in cultural history in one grumpy swipe? How can anyone claim to hate something as broad and as rewarding as movies?
It’s like when someone provocatively says they will never watch Game Of Thrones because it’s rubbish without ever seeing it, or some hipster turns their nose at something ridiculously important as water, or oxygen.
Since Owen has clearly given up on the chance to enrich his life with films because he didn’t enjoy any he was shown,...

Newcastle United are good at cliches: last season was a season of two halves, fan attempts to dethrone Mike Ashley were marred by in-fighting and theoretical clashes and the side were almost relegated because of the one thing that no side can do without – goals. It’s no surprise then that the club also flirted outrageously with the old adage of being “too good to be relegated” before slipping with a quiet sob and a deflected own goal out of the Premier League at Aston Villa, much to the glee of the locals. For their part, they rubbed the old Geordie Messiah cliche in our tear-stained faces as we went.
Whether that side truly were truly good remains to be seen – what is obvious is that they weren’t too good to be relegated as the final Premier League table proved otherwise, and Mike Ashley was...

Newcastle United supporters are known for getting whipped in a frenzy at the prospect of a new signing, falling over themselves with excitement at the club’s latest purchase. Turning out in their droves for the unveilings of Alan Shearer, Michael Owen and even Patrick Kluivert, it certainly doesn’t take much for St. James’ Park to resemble that of the Santiago Bernabeu on ‘Galactico Day’.
With that being said, however, it must take a certain type of player with an extraordinary average reputation to not only fail to excite the Geordie nation, but to actively demoralise them. The likes of Shefki Kuqi, Steven Ireland and Cacapa have not only quenched Toon hopes, but have fuelled a burning anger within the Toon Army, as they lament Mike Ashley’s penny-pinching policy. Newcastle United are not exactly known for doing a lot of positive business on transfer deadline day: the last major incoming deal cut in the final hours of any window brought Michael Owen to St James Park, and the less said about that the better. But with a strong summer of building behind them, and the decision to let Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa leave on loan, today surely have been identified as an opportunity to strengthen in two key areas.
What has been clear for the entire summer is that Newcastle need a centre-half and a striker, and have done for some time. So the decision to seemingly let Roma take Yanga-Mbiwa without bringing in cover looks like a ludicrous one.
Just think, if Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson get injured, Newcastle face the awful reality of playing only Steven Taylor as a recognised centre-half.

Liverpool have a long and illustrious history, and inevitably have produced some wonderful players over the years both in terms of homegrown talents – like Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher – and marquee signings – Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes, Sami Hyypia and Luis Suarez. The successes of that illustrious lot were unrivalled in the red of Liverpool, but they were not the only players to sign or come through the ranks on the crest of a wave of optimism and expectations.
And sometimes, sadly, some of those players will fail.
Anfield is a wonderful place to ply your trade, but the pressure that comes with it is enormous. The fans are among the most passionate, and the most loyal around, but they also demand a certain standard. If a player is bought for big-money then they inevitably expect to see them justify their price tag on the pitch.

With the loan deal tied up to take the England dynamo from New York City Fc to Manchester City for six months, Lampard will be eager to get some match fitness under his belt, but at the same time, the quagmire that will exist in the back of his mind is the reception he will receive from his beloved Chelsea support.

Football is driven by the idea that money buys success. Fans expect clubs of a certain stature to spend, and those clubs recognise that top level talent costs the most.
For precisely that reason, moneybags Chelsea and Man City have led the way in the transfer market over the last decade, with big spending Man United staying in touch and Arsenal seemingly finally catching up. Even Everton recently broke their transfer record, spending £28 million on Romelu Lukaku in the hope of kicking on to the next level.
But with bigger transfer fees comes bigger risk: the Premier League has seen its share of transfer howlers - and there’s been too many to count – but there are a certain few that stick out in the minds of English football fans.

Nothing quite beats the euphoria of welcoming a new big name to your football club. The excitement of the unveiling is only matched by a successful debut, where the new hero scores the winner, picks the decisive pass or saves a penalty. The buzz around any new arrival is mainly, though not exclusively, related to the price. Like anything, the more you pay, the better you get. Usually, anyway…
Newcastle United is a club with a rich history big name signings. Not all have worked, and some people should remember the Luque’s, Boumsong’s and Marcelino’s of this world before demanding money be spent. That said, Newcastle’s recent transfer activity has been incredibly frustrating, with the days of big money arrivals merely a distant memory. However. from 1992 until 2007, under the guidance ofd Freddy Shepherd (yes, pun intended), Freddie Fletcher and Sir John Hall,...

The North-East is a hotbed for football. You’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere so obsessed with football in the country as this area. Football is a way of life, particularly in Newcastle, and there is nothing loved more than a local hero. Although the current regime has gone down the route of the “French Revolution”, leading to criticism from some corners for the lack of British talent, and that from their own academy, fans love to see one of their own strut their stuff in the black and white.
Jack Colback’s crossing of the divide from Sunderland to Newcastle on a free transfer was confirmed this week, and it was understandably met with a mixed response from fans, given his role for the old enemy from the start of his career. Some believe that he has a lot to do to win over his new club,...

Newcastle United is a unique club in so many ways. Things are never calm, never simple and never boring. Win or lose, something happens. Good form brings expectation, excitement and a party atmosphere in the city that inhabits and obsesses over their beloved team, while four games without a win means doom, gloom and a whole lot of shouting. St James’ Park casts a shadow over the city in a way that sums up the relationship between club and fans in a perfectly metaphorical way.
To play for Newcastle, you must be a certain type of person, understanding not only the values and size of the institution, but also the fact that football will be a constant part of your life on Tyneside. Numerous players have come and gone over the years, and as Yohan Cabaye and Loic Remy may well find, the grass isn’t...

Are you simply nuts about football? Then you should be mates with micro-artist Quentin Devine.
Devine has painstakingly carved portraits of five England footy greats into Brazil nuts in time for this summer's 2014 World Cup in Rio. Why? Well, just because he can.
The artist went through over 50 nuts, each measuring 1.5 by 2cm, averaging 96 hours.
David Beckham, Gary Lineker, Wayne Rooney, Paul Gascoigne and Alan Shearer are given their own nutty equivalents. Though, Gary may only be interested in the crisp variety.
The nuts have been made to tie in with Dave's show England's Top 19 Footy Heroes, which kicks off its World Cup coverage tomorrow (May 20) at 9pm.
Devine said: "When Dave asked me to carve the faces of five of England's most loved football legends out of Brazil nuts I knew it would be a challenge. The nuts can be very oily and extremely brittle but I think I...

Hull City are aiming to add some beef to their forward line this January, with a swoop for Newcastle stalwart Shola Ameobi, as they try to keep clear of the Premier League relegation places.
According to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, Hull manager Steve Bruce sent assistant Steve Agnew to cast his eye over Newcastle’s 2-1 win over West Brom a couple of weeks ago. With Hull averaging less than a goal a game in the league – they have only 13 goals from 15 outings – it is no surprise to see them pondering improved striking options.
Ameobi has spent his entire career on the Newcastle books, without ever being prolific. Over 13 years he has plundered only 77 goals, although he has rarely commanded a regular starting place, and injuries have also blighted his career. In his younger days, he could also point to big names such as Alan Shearer and...

Are Stoke the team to put an end to Southampton’s dream run of form?
Match Preview
It has been an energy-drenching week for Stoke. After leading 2-1 at Old Trafford after 78 minutes, to come away with nothing will be gut-wrenching for Stoke, and then to nearly make a similar mistake at 10-men Championship side Birmingham will not do anything to help Stoke’s chances against an inform Southampton.
Stoke did finally prevail, albeit via penalties, against Birmingham, but it took 120 minutes for them to do so, and with Southampton not playing this week (their Capital One Cup tie vs Sunderland was rescheduled on request by Northumbria Police) it will certainly be a test of Stoke’s fitness and resilience.

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie will miss his side’s Capital One Cup third round tie after failing to recover from his groin injury.
The Dutchman missed the weekend’s 4-1 defeat at rivals Manchester City and manager David Moyes has confirmed that he will also miss tomorrow night’s match.
“I don’t think he will play on Wednesday. He will have an outside chance for Saturday” said Moyes.
It means that Van Persie may be back to face West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford at the weekend.
The 30-year-old has scored six goals this season from his six appearances including braces against both Wigan in the Community Shield and Swansea in the opening Premier League match of the season.
With Van Persie missing, Mexican international Javier Hernandez is expected to come into the side to make his first start of the season following just three substitute appearances so far.

Earlier today, Football Association chairman Greg Dyke played down England’s chances of World Cup glory at next summer’s tournament in Brazil and said he does not expect the Three Lions to win.
Dyke believes Roy Hodgson’s side can still qualify for the tournament, and that glory may be forthcoming when the competition comes to Qatar in 2022, but for the time being, it is unrealistic to expect anything more until then.
These sentiments were echoed earlier this year by Michael Owen, who said back in July that England are not in a good enough position to be successful in 12 months.
Owen, who is England’s tenth most-capped player, believes there is too much pressure on former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney as the whole nation prepares to hold its collective breath in anticipation next year.
With qualification for the 2014 World Cup by no means assured, we find ourselves agreeing with these opinions.

I really hate the transfer window now I’m that little bit older and that little bit wiser. When I left primary school and really started to take football seriously I absolutely loved the transfer window, all the excitement and the possibility of fresh faces. As I entered secondary school, Rafa was just taking over at Anfield and a brilliant period of Liverpool history was about to follow. That summer is when I really caught the bug. Reading my paper like a proper grown up. Scanning the back pages for Liverpool’s latest transfer activity. That year, it was Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia who really caught the eye and excited me the most. I didn’t know anything about them, they just sounded like good players who could help Liverpool.
Despite the excitement, there was perhaps one piece of business that really should have warned me about the dangers...

Back in 2004, Wayne Rooney, was the most sought after teenager in football. Having fought off other clubs, Manchester United signed the prodigious teenager for £25.6 million plus add-ons. A fee which was a record for a teenager. On his debut, a Champions League match against Fenerbache, Rooney introduced himself with aplomb. He scored a hat-trick and whilst he was already a fans favourite following his signature, this feat further cemented him as such.

Noddy Holder is reportedly wanted for this year's Strictly Come Dancing.
Slade's frontman has revealed that he has been approached by BBC bosses to join the 2013 lineup of stars.
However, he explained that he will only take part if he feels he stands a decent chance of winning.
"I get asked to do all the reality shows, but I'm in my late sixties now. I can't be going to the North Pole and the jungle," Holder is quoted as telling The Sun.
"I have been asked to do Strictly and I like the show - I've been down to watch it being filmed with my missus, who is a huge fan and keeps badgering me to do it.
"But it's a lot of work. I know Johnny Ball did it and he's almost ten years older than me, but he went out in the first week. I'm competitive and...

I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here Now! host Laura Whitmore has revealed that she wants to return for a third series.
The Irish presenter has fronted the ITV2 show for two years, but has not yet signed up for a third run.
However, she explained that things are "looking good" for a return to the programme later this year.
"I miss Australia - the last series of I'm A Celebrity was brilliant," she told The Sun. "I definitely want to go back this year and things are looking good at the moment.
"I saw Ant & Dec and the producers recently, and we were all reminiscing. Because you see the same people all the time out there it becomes like a family."
Paul Gascoigne was named as her number one jungle contestant, after he recently expressed an interest in joining the show's lineup.

Midfield has quite often been an area of concern for Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men were overrun in the 2009 Champions League final against Barcelona, and again two years later, and they have lacked an enforcer ever since Roy Keane’s departure in 2005. Meanwhile, the once majestic talents of Ryan Giggs and particularly Paul Scholes are beginning to wane, while there are serious doubts over the futures of a number of other players.
Nani has been linked with a move away from the club, as has Anderson, while Shinji Kagawa and Darren Fletcher have suffered injury-laden campaigns and have spent much of the current season on the sidelines.
The arrival of Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace in the summer will provide United’s midfield with a much needed injection of youthful vitality and pace, but the overriding feeling is that there is still much work to be done in the midfield department for Ferguson.

So football’s greatest nearly man has decided to call it a day. That’s right Michael Owen has decided to hang up his Umbro’s and bid farewell to his playing career. I call him ‘football’s greatest nearly man’ lightly, he of course has had a great career but it could have and possibly should have been even better. He nearly became a Liverpool legend, he nearly surpassed Bobby Charlton’s England goalscoring record, he probably should have broken England’s all time appearances record, I could go on. The fact of the matter is who is going to regard him as one of the all-time greats? In a career that started so explosively it has somewhat fizzled out like the proverbial firework bought from your local Spar.
Is it even a shock he has announced his retirement? It’s crazy to think he is only 33; he’s...

Newcastle United are still without goalkeeper Tim Krul and captain Fabricio Colocinni. Papiss Cisse didn’t travel to Russia on Thursday with a virus but Newcastle are hopeful he will be fit to start in this one after sitting out the 0-0 Europa League draw with Anzhi. Alan Pardew has also labelled Shola Ameobi a doubt for the game.
Hatem Ben Arfa, who did start up front in the Europa League midweek, is a doubt and two games in a week could be too much of a risk after playing his first football since December on Thursday. Yoan Gouffran, who is ineligible for Europa League action for The Magpies, will likely return to the starting line-up, easing United’s forward issues. Mathieu Debuchy also returns.
For Stoke, Michael Owen and Matthew Etherington both face late fitness test before...
