The "Survivor: Worlds Apart" cast was a bit short on recognizable celebrities, if your idea of "celebrity" happens to be former professional athletes or nearly-forgotten '80s TV stars. If, however, you spend time around the world of reality TV or academia, or you spend time around those who spend their time around those worlds, there's no question that Max Dawson entered "Survivor: Worlds Apart" as the season's biggest superstar. As a member of Northwestern's Communications department, Max taught several years of a course titled "The Tribe Has Spoken: Surviving TV’s New Reality," as well as other courses on TV, new media and the business betwixt them. Several of my critical buddies, including Mo Ryan and Myles McNutt and Erik Adams, made appearances in the "Survivor" class. Since 2013, Max has worked as a consultant for and on the reality TV industry. He may not be Lisa Whelchel or Jimmy Johnson,...

It was a debacle. The battle of the sexes twist didn’t work. The cast was unlikable, including one dude who called himself Troyzan and another dude who called himself Tarzan. It was ridiculous. So when Survivor: One World signed off in the spring of 2012, many wondered openly about the health of the franchise that gave birth to network reality TV way back in the summer of 2000. Maybe it was finally time to snuff Survivor’s torch.
Except that’s not what happened. Ever since then, Survivor has been so hot that Michael Skupin may burn his hands on it...

Proving sometimes, everybody’s in the wrong, the fight allegedly began after a party guest mocked the autism-afflicted son of housewife Jacqueline Laurita and her spouse, Christopher. How about we just throw ‘em all behind bars, throw away the key and call it a day?

Survivor: Philippines Review, Season 25, Episode 11
“Hell Hath Frozen Over”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
It’s been interesting this season to watch how each returning player has approached Survivor differently using his past knowledge. Russell Swan looked at his first appearance and decided to change his style. The problem was that he actually did well the first time as the leader before his exit. Mike Skupin competed during a different era where strategy took a back seat to physical survival. He seemed like a prime contender to leave early, but he’s maneuvered well heading towards the end. The surprise has been Jonathan Penner, who entered with a reputation as a strategist. He clearly understands the show and has studied how things work in the game. Unfortunately, his play hasn’t always reflected that intelligence. After surviving a few close calls after the merge, he got complacent and...

Survivor: One World Review, Season 24, Episode 15, Reunion
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Although they tend to focus on a few contestants, Survivor reunions always include standout moments that make them worth the extra hour. This year’s has more than its share of highlights, with many coming from Jeff Probst himself. He asks questions to the wrong people, interviews random audience members, and seems more flustered than usual. That said, he’s also having a great time and keeps the mood light. The kinder tone of the final Tribal Council sticks around for the reunion, with even Colton and Alicia not coming off terribly. She gives a heartfelt apology that feels genuine and shows that at least she realizes her conduct was troublesome. The one exception to the love fest is Troyzan, who compares himself to Richard Hatch and still won’t admit he got played. Sporting ridiculous dyed black hair,...

“Perception is Not Always Reality”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
There have been only a few cases where the Survivor winner has been telegraphed so far in advance. A recent example was Boston Rob’s roll through the Redemption Island season, but his edge as a four-time returning player made it easier. Kim has played front and center since the merge and put a huge target on her back. She’s walked the line between staying loyal to her alliance and removing major challengers. During the two-hour finale, she has several opportunities to take out players who could steal the prize. The surprising part is that she resists that temptation and sticks with Sabrina and Chelsea to face the music. Her confidence in the Final Tribal Council is clear, and the only remaining obstacle is bitterness from the jury.

Christina Cha and Alicia Rosa took fourth and fifth place, respectively on "Survivor: One World" and while they may have started out pretty rough on the show, in their exit interview with Zap2it, the friendship was palpable.
Congratulations on the all-female Final 5. That was awesome.
Alicia: "I loved that throughout all the hot mess we had in the beginning and even at one point when Troy was trying to waver us from that plan, it just, to me, I just love the message and what came across. If we all stick together and we all just trust each other and work together, we can do something amazing."
Was "Survivor" everything you hoped it would be?
Christina: "Oh, absolutely. I never expected the turnout, of course. In my perfect world, how I would play it, it would be different. Who I was in the beginning of the game...

Kim Spradlin became the 11th female winner of "Survivor," but she became the first to engineer an all-female Final 5. She tells Zap2it that she was surprised by the margin of victory, but she was absolutely shocked by the Fan Favorite vote.
How proud are you of your game? An all-female Final 5, you won Fan Favorite too - is it just overwhelming?
It really is overwhelming. It's very surreal. I've hardly slept, so I kind of feel like I'm in a really good dream. It's just awesome. It was so fun to do that with the girls. We bonded so much at the beginning when things were really rough. It was a really cool experience."
Were you surprised by the margin of victory?

Each week, host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Survivor: One World.
Entertainment Weekly: Kim really dominated in all three facets of the game — social, strategic, and physical. Where does she stack up when compared to other people that have dominated from start to finish like Tom Westman and Boston Rob?
Jeff Probst: That’s a good question. I actually think Kim is in the top grouping of winners. She was great at the social game. So many faces and great at reading a situation and equally good at stopping a disaster before it starts.

'The guys — they had no unity,' fourth-place finisher Christina Cha tells MTV News of scoring show's first ever all-girl finale.

Kim Spradlin isn't the only "Survivor: One World" winner. Ok, technically she is — that cool $1 million is firmly in her bank account — but the season's four finalists can also take comfort in knowing that they made "Survivor" history together: For the first time in 24 seasons, there was not a single man left standing among the final five contestants.
The feat is all the more impressive considering where the women began. At the outset of "One World," the two tribes were separated on gender lines, with the men of Manono showcasing their clear physical advantage with two early immunity wins. It certainly didn't help that the women of Salani were turning on each other, with in-fighting dominating much of their air time in the season's earliest episodes.

Throughout the Survivor finale, the women kept saying to each other “may the best woman win." Thankfully, she did.
Kim put a bow on the neat little package that was her game this season. She dominated from start to finish and even if you do not believe she has earned her place among the Survivor greats, the way she played this season certainly does. Her win ranks alongside Boston Rob (Survivor: Redemption Island), Brian Heidik (Survivor: Thailand) and Tom Westman (Survivor: Palau).
Consider that throughout the entire game, she was never seriously targeted to be voted out. None of the other people playing with her recognized how much of a threat she was to not only keep advancing, but win the game. She played both sides of two different alliances at two different points in the game and came out of both not only on the winning side, but without a scratch on her.

The "Survivor: One World" reunion special is largely Colton-focused, which is annoying.
The first part of the reunion show is pretty firework-free. Even Leif and Troyzan are not seeming mad that Kim won (they were the two votes for Sabrina). Everyone seems to agree that Kim is a deserving winner. Which is true.
Colton's Shot at Redemption
But then. Colton time. He owns what he said and he says it made him uncomfortable. And he says he saw himself being a very, very mean person. Jeff presses him whether he's the racist bigot we saw on the show. His defense is that he would make out with Shemar Moore faster than any woman. Um, that doesn't make you not a racist dude. Notice how Bill was not laughing at that? Saying any kind of "I have a black friend" type thing does not make you not a racist.

On "Survivor: One World," we're down to an all-female Final 5 for the first time in the show's history. Well done, ladies. Hat tip to you all for playing a pretty gosh darn good game.
But just for the record - Kim deserves to win this in a unanimous vote, so hopefully that's how it goes down.

It's rather hilarious how Alicia/Christina and Chelsea/Sabrina still think they are good to go with Kim for a Top 3. They just have no idea and nobody has realized that Kim is a huge threat to win the money. We aren't rooting for anyone to take her out, but it is kind of mystifying that nobody talks about it.

After annihilating all the men in Survivor: One World's battle of the sexes, five women headed into tonight's finale—a first for the reality series. Survivor: One World Review, Season 24, Episode 13, “It’s Human Nature”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
In game theory, there’s a plan of attack known as a secure strategy where the player chooses the least-worst option. The approach focuses on avoiding risks and protecting against the worst-case scenario. Extending this concept to Survivor, contestants frequently go into the game with the sole purpose of staying on the island. They aren’t working to gain control or garner jury votes and just want to keep playing for as long as possible. While it’s often effective for sticking around, this plan usually doesn’t lead to the ultimate success. This season’s definitive example is Christina, who’s been on the edges of her tribe since the first episode. When the other players exit, they consistently deride the fact that she remains while they’ve been kicked off the island.

Greg "Tarzan" Smith is the latest castaway voted off "Survivor: One World." He tells Zap2it in his exit interview that the girls were smarter post-merge.
Are you glad you did "Survivor"? Was it everything you hoped/expected it to be?
"I'm immensely glad that I did 'Survivor.' I really am an adventurer and it was an adventure. I starved, I didn't sleep, I lost 25 lbs. I developed a protein deficiency ... I love the interplay socially. It was like playing a chess game. I loved that. The problem was it was an 18-tier chess game with 18 brains and that made it incomparably fun for me. I had a great time. And I lost the weight that i needed to lose."
In hindsight, do you still think it was a good strategy to turn on the men?

Give him credit where it's due. If nothing else, the ludicrously entertaining Greg "Tarzan" Smith exited "Survivor: One World" exactly as you'd want him to: wearing an extra-tight bloodstained tank top and dirty panties on his head.
After almost 40 days and innumerable twist and turns along the way, Tarzan's shot at the million-dollar prize ended Wednesday night just short of the elite final five. Since he was the last man standing, Tarzan's exit marks the end of the season's battle of the sexes — a battle the women won decisively, despite a very rocky start. Now, only five players remain going into Sunday night's season finale: loudmouth Alicia, timid Christina, measured Sabrina, cowgirl Chelsea and Kim, long considered the front-runner to win the game.

Chelsea sure seems like a much bigger threat to win both challenges and jury votes.

Last week, Alicia declared that she was running the show on "Survivor: One World" (Wed., 8 p.m. Et on CBS), and she did so again this week. And yet, it's been pretty clear to everyone watching, and everyone on the island, that Kim was calling the shots.
Kim has also been playing both sides of the remaining six contestants. A dangerous game that she feared would come unraveled. But instead, she was able to take advantage of Tarzan trying to do the same thing to get the women united one more time to evict the final man in the game.
She was right in declaring that it would be disappointing to see a man in the final tribal council, after the women had worked so well together to decimate them. So Tarzan was the next to go, leaving five women alone to vie for the title of Sole Survivor.

Playing Survivor is an anxiety generating proposition. Every action you make, every person you talk to is noticed and scrutinized. Being on your game at all times is essential. The ability to trust someone else is necessary, but must be evaluated constantly.
With so much uncertainty in Survivor, determining who you can rely on and who you can trust is a very difficult situation. However, sometimes the players help you out. Not by making it obvious you can trust them, but making it obvious that you can’t trust them. This exact scenario led to Tarzan’s demise this week.
Tarzan’s strategy playing Survivor has certainly been unique if not downright confusing. He informed the viewers this week that he set up his game in stages and has continuously accomplished those stages. Okay, not bad. When talking to the women, he continuously downplays himself, focusing on anyone else. Also...

Can any future episodes of "Survivor: One World" live up to the awesomeness that was Kat's "fun and exciting" blindside. Heh. We enjoyed that just as much watching it again on the previouslies.
This episode certainly doesn't live up to last week, but everybody sure likes talking about Kim and her big blue devious eyes.
Tikiano
Tarzan is seeing that perhaps he has a way into the Top 3, though we are skeptical - all the girls have to realize the guys will totally vote for him to win just because they're bitter, right? His first play is to talk to Kim about her plan, saying her best bet is to go to the finals with Christina and Alicia. Interesting.
The next day, Chelsea lays it out for Christina why she should go with herself and Kim, and Christina immediately runs back to tell Tarzan, Alicia and Kim everything Chelsea said.

Survivor 24,One World voted off Greg Tarzan Smith in episode 13 tonight. Tonight's episode kicked off with more commentary footage. Tarzan started trying to make deals with Alicia. The conversations were kind of all over the place at this point. Then they showed rewards challenge footage. Chelsea ended, pulling out the win,and chose to take Sabrina and Kim with her on her food reward. After the break, they showed more commentary footage. Alicia started throwing Chelsea and Kim's name around for elimination, and maybe trying to take Christina and Tarzan to the finals. Later on, Alicia said, that she's gonna try and get Tarzan out after talking with Km and Christina. Either that,or Chelsea if she doesn't win immunity, because she thinks Chelsea had been trying to run game on her. Next, they showed immunity challenge footage. It involved a fish skeleton puzzle, and Alicia just edged out Kim for the win.

If Survivor: One World were a beauty pageant, Tarzan—the last man standing—wouldn't stand a chance. Nor did it seem the chest-thumping buffoon could outwit, outplay or outlast leading lady Kim and her sexy sidekick, Chelsea. Until tonight, that is, when the tribal elder plotted to send Chelsea home instead. So did his plan succeed, or did girl power triumph once again? In the end, Chelsea was still sitting pretty (seriously, isn't she one of the hottest Castaways of all time?), while plastic surgeon Greg Smith bid farewell with a bad poem and his signature Tarzan yell. Looks like his car won't get those new shocks after all. (Too bad he didn't take advantage of...

Be careful what you wish for. That was the lesson Survivor: One World contestant Kat Edorsson learned when she was blindsided this week. In anticipation of blindsiding tribemate Sabrina Thompson, Edorsson, 22, told host Jeff Probst she found blindsides "exciting" and "funny," but she was not laughing when she was the one sent to the jury instead. Speaking to People Thursday about her "million dollar mistake" during the reward challenge, the timeshare rep from Orlando, Fla., touched upon why she wishes Troy had encouraged another player instead of her, and how she doesn't mind being "the clown." You were very emotional during your exit interview.

Survivor: One World Review, Season 24, Episode 12,
“It’s Gonna Be Chaos”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
One of the most exciting parts of Survivor is the blindside, which gives clever players a chance to flip the game on an unsuspecting opponent. The editors love telegraphing the move and include plenty of quotes from the goat about how they’re “running the game” and “totally safe”. At Tribal Council, Kat even talks about the fun and excitement of the blindside. Her shocked reaction after the 6-1 vote against her is priceless. Her sobbing confessional during the credits is hard to take, even though her exit is welcome. Kat didn’t understand how the game worked. She talks about being embarrassed by leaving before Christina and Tarzan. The game doesn’t reward players who are the most “deserving”. There’s a good chance one of those two will reach the end,...

CBS Chelsea Meissner, Sabrina Thompson and Alicia Rose during the immunity challenge on “Survivor: One World.”
Previously on Survivor: Troyzan was voted out, leaving just one man standing, the somewhat senile Tarzan. Christina was at the bottom of the female alliance, but seems to be ignorant of that.
Back at camp, Alicia is mocking Christina and worried about Sabrina. Alicia claims she is in charge. “I’m controlling everything. I’m the most powerful player in this game,” she tells the camera.

Each week, host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Survivor: One World.
Entertainment Weekly: As all these loved ones showed up and then took part in the reward challenge, all I kept thinking was: How is Probst able to remember all their names, especially while doing play by play? I can barely remember the names of the contestants themselves! Do you quiz yourself relentlessly before they arrive?
Jeff Probst: Funny observation. I am blessed with a great short term memory so it’s not usually that big of a deal. But long term...

After eliminating every male they thought was any kind of threat, leaving Tarzan the last man standing on "Survivor: One World" (Wed., 8 p.m. Et on CBS), the women finally started turning on one another. At this point, the strategy became about getting rid of anyone who stood a chance of doing well with the jury.
After making a boneheaded and non-strategic move upon her victory at the loved ones reward challenge, Kat put herself on the radar. Then, she lasted a full hour against Kim in the immunity challenge, proving herself a physical threat, as well as someone who hadn't made any real enemies on the island, and particularly with the male-dominated jury.
It came down to Kat and Sabrina -- who worried front-runners Kim and Alicia because of how well-spoken she is -- at Tribal Council. Quickly, the tide turned against Kat and though she said that backstabbing is exciting in the game,...

Let’s review who loves blindsides on Survivor. Certainly the Survivor producers love them. We, the viewers, love them. Heck, even Kat loves them!
Oh, wait... too soon?
To paraphrase George Costanza “now that chick got blindsided!” Unintentionally, Jeff set Kat up for one of the best (note: not biggest) reactions to a blindside even this week on Survivor. She probably would have cried regardless, but getting her quote moments before being voted off was tremendous.
Blindsides are always fun and exciting!
The slowly building shock on Kat’s face as the four votes for her were read was priceless. I was actually surprised she kept it together for the first three votes before she was finally eliminated on the fourth vote and became the new Pictionary definition of shocked. As far as I could tell she had no reason to suspect any votes.

We've been reading the comments from you, dear readers, regarding the "Survivor: One World" season. It's interesting that people think it's boring - is it just because there isn't some Alpha male dominating the game? Is it because Kim's a woman and she's been expertly manipulating both the men and women to do her bidding? We wonder.
Post Tribal
Alicia is worried about Sabrina, who is a smart cookie, and starts to wonder if they should keep Christina around because nobody will vote for her to win. Uh, duh. I can't believe it took you so long to see that.
Sprint Reward Challenge
It's the Sprint Loved Ones by Sprint challenge from Sprint. Does it involve an actual sprint? It should. Interestingly, none of the women's loved ones are husbands or partners. Are they all single? That's rare on "Survivor." But Tarzan's wife is there, so that's cool.

Survivor: One World Review, Season 24, Episode 11, “Never Say Die”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
A consistent source of frustration for Survivor fans is players accepting their spot and refusing to make big moves. It’s true that a good percentage of the time, it doesn’t make sense to change up the game. Unexpected twists provide great television, but they don’t always benefit the contestants themselves. Following the merge, however, there comes a time when anyone who actually wants to win has to pick their spot. Will they go meekly into the sunset and become a forgettable fifth place finisher? Or will they take a chance and try to gain an edge? If the plans fail, they can lead to a quick exit, but is it really that much worse to finish eighth? When John Cochran flipped on his tribe last season, he didn’t improve his ultimate standing.

Few people would have predicted Greg "Tarzan" Smith to be the last man standing on "Survivor: One World," but that's exactly what's happened now that his similarly named competitor Troyzan is no longer in the game.
After an astonishing drop in likability paired with an equally stunning win last week, Troyzan redeemed himself (to a degree) on a personal level in the latest episode, at the expense of his life in the game. Now, six women remain: wishy-washy Christina, foul-mouthed Alicia, dim-witted Kat, savvy Sabrina, the seemingly unbeatable Kim and her partner-in-crime Chelsea — with only Tarzan representing the men of "One World," poop pants and all.

"Survivor: One World" is still Troyzan vs. The Women - can he pull off a huge upset?
Reward Challenge
It sounds like it's a case of the winner getting to pick people to take with them and Kim smartly identifies that sending Troy, Alicia and Christina back to camp together would be a mistake. When they get to the challenge, Alicia hilariously says she has crazier hair than her dummy - yes, she does. She looks like the wildling lady who looks after Bran on "Game of Thrones."
The challenge is answering questions about the tribemates. Then you guess what the group said as a whole. When you get one right, you get to chop someone's rope. Every rope has three chops and then it drops their dummies into the fire. The winner gets a picnic.
Question 1 is who does not deserve to still be here - group says Christina.

The core tenants of Survivor are outwit, outlast, outplay. The first two are easy. Outwit talks to the strategy of the game; creating alliances, making moves and currying jury votes. Outplay is also simple. Win immunity and you can’t go home. Stay in the game long enough and you’ll have a chance to win.
But what about outplay? What does that refer to?
Outplaying in Survivor is an aspect of the game that some of the best players have been unable to master. It’s why Russell, master of outwit and outlast, never won but Boston Rob did. Outplaying is the social aspect of Survivor and the part many struggle with.
This week on Survivor the two best players remaining in the game both struggled with the social aspect of Survivor. For Troyzan it meant his torch being snuffed. For Kim it could have meant the same.

After playing his idol and losing his ally, Troyzan and is on his own and ready to battle. Unfortunately, his idea of competing involves cursing out his opponents and rubbing his success in their faces. Apparently, Troyzan isn’t concerned with getting any jury votes. It’s fine to try and win immunity, but he’s no Terry Dietz or Tom Westman. There are still nine players remaining, so Troyzan will need to win six straight challenges to make the end. Even if he makes it there, acting like a jerk is not a good strategy. His immunity win saves his hide this week, but that success will likely be fleeting. Leif Manson was voted off "Survivor: One World" Wednesday (April 18), leaving just two men to face the all-girl alliance that seems to be in complete control of the game. He tells Zap2it that those women are tricky.
Are you glad you did "Survivor"? Was it everything you hoped it would be?
"Yeah. I mean, it was everything and then some. I've been so thankful and grateful to know that I, in a sense, won a million dollars just 'cause of how many people apply for the show. Hundreds of thousands of people apply for the show, and I was picked to be on 'Survivor.' Definitely makes me feel good."
Last night, we saw that Tarzan voted for you. How come you voted for Kim? Did you ever have a thought to vote for Tarzan, which would have tied the votes between you?
"I know I was back and forth.

Two weeks ago, if you had told me that 50-year-old photographer Troy "Troyzan" Robertson would be my least favorite person on "Survivor: One World," I would have pushed you in the mud and shouted in your face, "This is my island!" Ok, perhaps something a little less aggressive, but I still wouldn't have believed you.
Then Wednesday night happened.
Troy, with his back against the wall and few to no allies to turn to, did the only things he could to survive against the newly strengthened women's alliance: He pretended to find another hidden immunity idol (after playing his the week before), he won the next immunity challenge, and then he ... rubbed it in everyone's faces with an F-bomb for good measure?...

With Kim's all-woman alliance exposed, the women got a little cocky and their number one target Troyzan got a little desperate on "Survivor: One World" (Wed., 8 p.m. Et on CBS). His back clearly against the wall, the women tried to tell him to take his eventual elimination with some grace, but why would he do that?
Instead, he fought to save himself, and maybe shake up the game entirely. With only three guys left to the women's six, he tried to call on his former female tribe mates by telling Christina and Alicia that they're at the bottom of that woman's alliance -- something that certainly appears to be true.
After winning the immunity challenge, he bought himself another "week" in the game, but he still tried to shake things up nevertheless. Unfortunately, it didn't work and Leif was the fourth guy in a row voted out of the game.
