Exclusive: Animal Pictures principals Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne are going their separate ways on the producing front, in an amicable situation, Deadline can exclusively reveal.
Sources ascribed the split to a desire on the part of both producers to entertain differing creative paths and pursuits. Rudolph and Lyonne have made the mutual decision that Lyonne will continue to operate under the name Animal Pictures, as Rudolph branches off to produce independently.
Rudolph and Lyonne affirmed the news in the following statement shared with Deadline: “Moving forward, Natasha will operate under the name Animal Pictures while Maya will produce independently. We will continue to support each other and remain committed to the various projects we’ve developed together and have in the pipeline. We are excited for each other and what the future holds.”

Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) and Paddy Considine (House of the Dragon) will star in Small Town, Big Story, a new Sky original series created and directed by Chris O’Dowd (Moone Boy).
The six-part show focuses on an Irish village that gets taken over by a Hollywood production that throws the spotlight on an old secret.
“Every small town has a story to tell. Some don’t know how to keep a secret …,” reads a plot description, which promises “a warm and witty, very dramatic comedy.” It is set in the fictional town of Drumbán, “a rural village of rattled misfits on the border of Ireland and another world,” and explores “what happens when a Hollywood production rolls into town and throws the spotlight on a secret that’s been kept hidden since the eve of the millennium.”

Chris O’Dowd is penning a Sky comedy-drama starring Christina Hendricks and Paddy Considine about a Hollywood production that disturbs the peace in a fictional town in Ireland.
Small Town, Big Story has started filming on location in Ireland under a UK Equity contract and follows goings-on in Drumbán, a rural village of rattled misfits. When a major Hollywood production rolls into town, a spotlight is thrown on a secret that has been kept hidden since the eve of the Millennium.
Hendricks (Mad Men) is playing Wendy Patterson, a local girl done good as a hot-shot television producer, who returns to her hometown from LA with the Hollywood production in tow, while House of the Dragon’s Considine is local doctor and pillar of the community Seamus Proctor. Christina Hendricks and “House of the Dragon’s” Paddy Considine have been tapped to lead “Small Town, Big Story,” a new Sky Studios drama from Chris O’Dowd
O’Dowd (“State of the Union”) created and will direct the six-part dramatic comedy, which tells the story of the effect on a small Irish village when a Hollywood production begins shooting on its doorstep and rattled residents struggle to keep a long-buried secret under wraps.
The series is an Equity production, which is being shot in the U.K. and Ireland, but Sky has emphasized that all cast agreements comply with SAG-AFTRA rules in light of the ongoing actors strike. The cast were contracted before the strike.

‘Extra Ordinary’ Star Maeve Higgins on Hauntings, Will Forte and Losing ‘Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!’
For Maeve Higgins, launching a film career started with denial. “It’s so hard to get a movie made, I just didn’t believe it would happen,” she says with a laugh. Written and directed by Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman, “Extra Ordinary” features the Irish comedian in her first starring role. “It’s probably good I didn’t fully believe it,” Higgins adds. “I didn’t have time to get worried about it.”
Known for her work on series like Ireland’s “Naked Camera” and “Maeve Higgins’ Fancy Vittles” and her books “We Have a Good Time, Don’t We?” and “Maeve In America: Essays by a Girl from Somewhere Else,” Higgins might be best known to American audiences for her recent appearances on the hit NPR program “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!” On that quiz show, Higgins doesn’t always have the right answers, but makes up...

There was a stampede of new titles opening this weekend at the specialty box office, and despite coronavirus-induced fears of being in close proximity in theaters, there weren’t any glaring slumps in the indie and arthouse space. Of the films released this weekend, First Cow made some moo-ves at the box office, earning an estimated $96,059 with a per-theater average of $24,015. Not only is that an impressive debut for the A24 title, but it marks a career-high for the talented auteur Kelly Reichardt.
The period film about a prized bovine, starring John Magaro and Orion Lee, had four exclusive runs in New York at the AMC Lincoln Square and Angelika, as well as Los Angeles at the Arclight Hollywood and Landmark. The opening was a solid start for the film that will hopefully fuel the long roll-out that will continue into spring. Reichardt has been lauded for her intimate, cinematic...

A psychic driving instructor fights to save a young girl from a satanic sacrifice at the hands of a washed up psychedelic rock star in directors Enda Loughman & Mike Ahern's Extra Ordinary. This dark comic fantasy from Ireland absolutely wrecked the SXSW audience [last year], who I don't think were quite prepared for the potent mix of broad splatstick comedy and the sweet coming-of-age story of a thirty something woman looking for meaning beyond teaching teenagers to parallel park. Rose (Maeve Higgins) is that driving instructor, but with a not-so-secret past. Rosa's father was the UK's premiere paranormal expert, hosting a popular series of informational specials on various aspects of the intersection between the worlds of the living and the dead. Rosa inherited her...

A driving instructor with a gift for banishing demons comes to the aid of a troubled widower in this horribly enjoyable tale
The unquiet spirit of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace is revived by this outstandingly funny and good-natured horror-comedy: a cracking debut feature from Irish writer-directors Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman.
There are belting laughs and great performances, and, unlike so many Hollywood comedies, the funny stuff doesn’t simply bleed out as the plot grinds into action for the increasingly sentimental second and third acts. And, unlike some British indies, it never sacrifices comedy to the easier mannerism of being “dark”; it just keeps being funny while at the same time weirdly touching.

At the close of the 19th edition of the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival in Italy yesterday, Extra Ordinary (pictured above) received an award as the best European feature film, as chosen by an international jury. But that wasn't all. The feature debut by directors Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman was also awarded the Stars' War - Web Critics Award, the Nocturno Nuove Visioni Award, and the Audience Award. That's quite an accomplishment! Here's how the festival described it: "Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman present an unmissable romantic comedy with supernatural elements, skillfully playing with the traditional tropes of the possession genre. The result is a bubbly horror comedy unafraid to be politically incorrect." Our own J Hurtado saw the film at SXSW in Austin, Texas, earlier...

You've seen this story before: woman with powers who has denounced said powers is coerced into using them to save the world - or in this case, one girl. The overwhelming nature of grief and the inability to let go of those who have passed on is universal. Not as relatable is that weight twisted into a hilariously morbid narrative: a child lost to a ritual sacrifice at the hands of a washed-up Christian rock star who has made a deal with the devil for one more shot at stardom. You know, that old chestnut. “Extra Ordinary”— the debut film from Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman — takes nearly every heavy ghost and exorcism film impeded with bereavement, and flips them on their heads with humor and ingenuity to spare, which more than makes up for the times when the film gets away from them.

Something I look forward to every single year, Film at Lincoln Center's annual week-long "Scary Movies" series, is hitting here in New York this forthcoming weekend -- check out the entire stellar run of films at this link here. While I'm most excited for Ari Aster's "Director's Cut" of Midsommar, which runs half an hour longer than the one we saw in theaters, they're mixing up showings of brand new flicks and old under-screened classics in ways that really set my toes to tingle.
In that vein I was tempted to use this week's edition of our "Great Moments in Horror Actressing" series to talk about a performance not very many people have seen yet -- that of Maeve Higgins in Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman's horror-comedy Extra Ordinary, which I saw this past month thanks to the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal (here's my...

Mike Ahern and Edna Loughman direct and write (with additional writing from Demian Fox and Maeve Higgins) Extra Ordinary, a paranormal-comedy flick starring some pretty well-known names such as Will Forte (Nebraska), Claudia O’Doherty (Trainwreck) and Barry Ward (Jimmy’s Hall). The peculiar synopsis and the cast had me immediately interested.
An Irish movie, Extra Ordinary is, basically, about a quiet-but-kind driving instructor who has the unusual ability to listen to and talk with dead folks, who most of the time are seemingly trying to interact with her and get her help (to the point of constant frustration on her part) but her gift allows her a chance to save a teenage girl who is about to be killed by a maniac failing musician (played...

The Mayhem audience can look forward to Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman's wonderful horror comedy Extra Ordinary, Bartosz Konopka's period actioner Sword of God (The Mute/Krew Boga) and Jeremy Gardner and Christian Stella's romantic creature feature Something Else. Personally, I have seen two of these, reviewed one myself, and can vouch for their entertainment value. Enda Loughman and Mike Ahern’s comedy horror triumphs at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival, taking home two of the most sought-after awards. After nine days of intense emotions, the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival (Nifff) is finishing its journey to the confines of fantastical worlds and its exploration of the very best of fantasy film from around the globe. Despite fierce competition, it was the crazy comedy with phantasmagorical overtones Extra Ordinary which came out on top. Directed by Ireland’s Enda Loughman and Mike Ahern and strutting home with the prestigious H. R. Giger "Narcisse" Award for Best Film and the no less coveted Rts Audience Award, Extra Ordinary looks set to be one of this year’s cult films. The 2019 international jury was composed of French producer Anaïs Bertrand, German director Katrin Gebbe, Swedish producer...
Irish comedies have won big at this year's Fleadh, while Patrick Wang's A Bread Factory scooped the Award for Best International Film. It's a wrap for the 31st edition of the Galway Film Fleadh, the Republic of Ireland's leading film festival. Yesterday, Sunday 14 July, the event came to a close after the screening of Ivan Kavanagh's new western Never Grow Old, starring Emile Hirsch and John Cusack in the lead roles. As always, the historic Town Hall Theatre hosted the awards ceremony. This year's edition saw the triumph of two Irish comedies – namely, Shelly Love's A Bump Along the Way, the recipient of the Award for Best First Feature, and Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman's Extra Ordinary, crowned Best Irish Feature. Incidentally, the latter also won the Best Film Award and the Audience Award at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival this weekend (see the news). Other prestigious.
"This bloody moon better make me bloody rich." Wild Card Distribution has debuted a full-length, official UK trailer for the indie comedy Extra Ordinary, from directors Mike Ahern & Enda Loughman. The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this year, but most importantly just won Best Film at the Galway Film Festival in Ireland this weekend. The film is about a sweet, lonely woman in rural Ireland with supernatural abilities, but hates using her "talents" and mostly just stays home. But when a washed up one-hit-wonder rock star makes a pact with the devil, and puts a spell on a local teenager, Rose must overcome her fears and save the day with her own supernatural talents. Maeve Higgins (seen on "Inside Amy Schumer" & "Moone Boy") stars as Rose, joined by Barry Ward, Will Forte, Claudia O'Doherty, Terri Chandler, Jamie Beamish, Emma Coleman, and Risteard Cooper. The reviews are great, it's winning awards,...

Fresh off of the SXSW premiere of their first directorial feature, Extra Ordinary, filmmaking pair Enda Loughman and Mike Ahern have inked with 1stAveMachine and The Gotham Group for literary representation.
The Ireland-based duo, collectively known as “Daddy”, is expanding their relationship with 1stAveMachine from commercial representation as part of the company’s strategic alliance with The Gotham Group to help develop its talent pool of commercial directors and creatives into other platforms including film and television.
Extra Ordinary stars Maeve Higgins, Barry Ward, Will Forte, and Claudia O’Doherty. The supernatural comedy follows Rose, a mostly sweet and mostly lonely small-town driving instructor, who must use her supernatural talent to save the daughter of Martin, also mostly sweet and lonely, from a washed-up rock star, who is using her in a satanic pact that will reignite his fame.
Loughman and Ahern are also currently writing an original screenplay for Aardman Animations.

The 2019 SXSW Film Festival launched plenty of buzz for many anticipated studio releases, from Jordan Peele’s “Us” to Olivia Wilde’s “Booksmart,” but these movies don’t tell the whole story. The Austin gathering showcased 102 features and episodic across nine days, and it remains unclear where many of those titles will surface next. But even if they didn’t garner the same level of hype, many of the smaller-scale narratives and documentaries at SXSW 2019 deserve audiences beyond the insular film festival circuit.
These highlights may not generate massive deals, but in today’s malleable distribution landscape, there are many of ways that strong, original storytelling can find audience. Here’s our usual plea that buyers take a chance on these worthy films that still need homes.
“Alice”
The opening minutes of “Alice” make the case for Emilie Piponnier to be a movie star, and the rest of the movie keeps it up.

A first feature for the writing-directing duo of Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman, whose prior work has encompassed shorts, music videos, and commercials, “Extra Ordinary” is a kind of tea-cosy “Ghostbusters” that’s consistently funny in a pleasingly off-kilter way. The presence of Will Forte as villain should help this Irish comedy (co-produced with Belgium) find North American berths, and its idiosyncratic appeal will find pockets of cult fandom elsewhere outside the U.K.
Comedienne Maeve Higgins brings a distinctive frank-yet-flaky personality not far from her standup work to heroine Rose Dooley, a wallflowerish 30-something who makes her small-town living as a driving instructor. She was once destined for other, greater things, however: Her famous spiritualist father Vincent used or perhaps exploited her own psychic gifts when she was a child, until an accident involving a “haunted pothole” put an end to both his life and her supernatural vocation. A psychic driving instructor fights to save a young girl from a satanic sacrifice at the hands of a washed up psychedelic rock star in directors Enda Loughman & Mike Ahern's Extra Ordinary. This dark comic fantasy from Ireland absolutely wrecked the SXSW audience this week, who I don't think were quite prepared for the potent mix of broad splatstick comedy and the sweet coming-of-age story of a thirty something woman looking for meaning beyond teaching teenagers to parallel park. Rose (Maeve Higgins) is that driving instructor, but with a not-so-secret past. Rosa's father was the UK's premiere paranormal expert, hosting a popular series of informational specials on various aspects of the intersection between the worlds of the living and the dead. Rosa inherited her...

Hollywood might not be known as the most patient of industries, but sometimes, good things do come to those who wait. Like “MacGruber” fans, who have spent the last decade beating the drum for a sequel to the Jorma Taccone-directed comedy, a cult classic that made less than $10 million when it was released in theaters but has continued to win fans for its ability to turn one “Saturday Night Live” sketch series into an actually viable feature-length film. Bolstered by a wacky charms of star and co-writer Will Forte, “MacGruber” is now poised to get another life, this time in the form of a television series that promises to be just as out-there and adult-oriented as its comically bloody cinematic predecessor.
“The state of ‘MacGruber’ right now is, we’re trying to see if somebody will let us make it as a TV series,” Forte said in a recent interview with IndieWire.

The annual gathering in Austin, Texas, which starts on March 8, will open with Jordan Peele’s “Us,” which was previously announced. The thriller stars Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Elisabeth Moss.

In recent years, SXSW has upped its game as a festival that covers a lot of ground.
