In the spirit of National Beyoncé Week — brought to you by the National Football League, the United States Congress, the Internet and the House of Dereon — I begin this American Idol recap with the bastardization of a famous lyric from the Artist Occasionally Known as Sasha Fierce:
“To the left, to the left. All the lady Idols in the holding pen to the left.”
Yes, folks, I’m still trying to sort out my feelings about one of the biggest changes to the show’s structure since my early days of recapping Fox’s reality behemoth — back when I identified with #TeamBo over #TeamCarrie.

You can’t always get what you want, as Mick Jagger (and later, Crystal Bowersox) once sang, and that adage has certainly been applicable to most of American Idol‘s first 399 episodes.
On Wednesday, however, in celebration of the 400th installment of the reality-competition granddaddy, Uncle Nigel took a page from Burger King’s ad department and produced an episode that let the Idoloonie Nation have it their way: A Top 13 packed almost entirely with solid (and varied) vocalists. Specific, constructive critiques from the judges. A mentor with serious chops, good humor, and spot-on advice. A clear, unmuddied sound mix.

Dungeoness crab Jimmy Iovine brought a much-needed reality check to last night’s American Idol with his frank and succinct few-second reviews of season 11′s Top 24 contestants. He should probably just step in and have a seat as a fourth judge!
Anyway, one comment he made about 15-year-old Eben Franckewitz stood out to me. Eben, you’ll remember, is the floppy-haired cherub who tried to set fire to a beloved Adele song on Tuesday’s Top 13 Guys performance night, but then it rained. Giant drops of reality poured down from the top of the Idoldome in thunderous spurts of “oh no you didn’t!

After 33 million plus votes were cast this week, the first live two hour results show of the season came upon us and half of the contestants met their end of the American Idol journey. Results were satisfactory for the most part. But that doesn’t mean the results weren’t a bit shocking. While Hollywood Week is the toughest part of the competition for the contestants, the first live results show is the toughest par of the competition for the viewers.
Producer, Jimmy Iovine made his first (pre-recorded) appearance of the season with his criticisms before each elimination. His comments could not have been anymore on point for Chase Likens, Phil Phillips, and Jeremy Rosado who were the first contestants to find out their fate. Those very truthful comments are probably why Phillips was the only one of those three to make it into the top ten. This was a...

Since American Idol’s sixth season, my comrades-in-arms and I have called Studio 36 at CBS Television City ”the Idoldome.” We meant the name both in the sense that the set felt like a futuristic, dome-like edifice of televised excess, and that by Idol’s very nature, the set was home to a Thunderdome-esque bloodbath of youth, hope, ambition, and dreams. Each successive new Idol set has felt bigger, brighter, more Idoldome-y, to the point where last year’s set was quite literally an arena surrounded on all sides by a well-dressed throng ravenous for big-voiced high notes, a wave from Jennifer Lopez,...

A word to the wise if you want to impress Jimmy lovine on American Idol: It is wise to skip singing Adele. It was a hard lesson for Eben Franckewitz, Jen Hirsh and Brielle Von Hugel to learn. All sang Adele. All were sent home. The exception to this rule was Elise Testone, who shone on Adele’s “One and Only” on Wednesday night’s show. She rightly earned a spot in the top 13. It just goes to show you, the cream, not White Chocolate (sorry Adam Brock), always rises to the top -- and America always seems to get it right.

Let's quickly clarify how this is going to work: America has voted through five girls and five guys. Six contestants will be asked to sing again, and from those six, the judges will choose three.
Got it? On to the finalists!
We're focusing on the guys first. Chase Likens, Jeremy Rosado and Phillip Phillips are called to center stage.
Except instead of telling us which of them is going on and which of them is going home, we get commentary from Jimmy Iovine. Who sounds like he's hocking "As Seen On TV" products. He wants to sign Phillip immediately. Smart man, Jimmy.
Jeremy's the first to be eliminated. Chase is also Not sticking around. Phillip Phillips is our first guy to the Top 10. And my 15 year old self squealed a little in excitement.
Now it's the girl's turn. Jessica Sanchez, Hollie Cavanagh, Hallie Day, and Brielle Von Hugel join Ryan on the floor.

America voted for five girls and five guys, and the judges each got a wildcard pick on the first “American Idol” results show of the season. That means there are 13 singers moving forward as finalists.
It was likely agonizing for the contestants on stage awaiting their fate, but it was equally agonizing for those of us watching, as the producers drew the process out for two full hours.

The moment we’ve been waiting for since Scotty McCreery’s confetti shower back in May 2011 finally arrived Thursday night: The Season 11 Top 13 announcement/Wild Card episode!

Dear contestants of American Idol,
Why do you think singing an Adele song is a good idea, ever? I understand her music moves you and you trust that voters love her music, too, because her album 21 has now spent the most weeks at No. 1 since Prince’s Purple Rain. But this is a woman whose voice Beyoncé has described as God’S. Why isn’t she on the Do Not Touch list along with Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, at least while the album is still so hot? The surest way to show that you are not ready to win...

"American Idol" revealed its top 13 finalists on Wednesday (March 1), swiftly dismissing half its field after this week's live performance episodes. The cuts were harsh, as Ryan Seacrest delivered the news in typical no-nonsense fashion, crushing the dreams of some contestants while making others' come true.
A reported 33 million votes were cast, down from the 40 million made at this point in the competition last year.
Phillip Phillips was the first one through to the voter-approved top 10 and got a few minutes to soak in the moment by himself before he was joined by Jessica Sanchez, whose purported vocal issues didn't affect her performance on Wednesday one bit, and tiny Hollie Cavanagh, who...

The first live show of American Idol Season 11 kicked off last night with a mediocre start and nothing but praises from the judges. If this is any indication as to how this season is going be from hereon out, we are on for one very boring ride. It’s no wonder the ratings continue to slip. Last night was a sad reminder that there’s no one like Simon Cowell on the judging panel anymore. Lopez is a proud mother to them all and Tyler loves moving his body and bobbing to each and every performance while Jackson was at a time the only judge we could really rely on for hard criticism. But Jackson rarely gave any last night, giving little to no space for these contestants to grow for next week’s performances. What a talented bunch of boys we have this year but next week’s song...

If there was a doctor in the house during Tuesday night’s American Idol telecast, he or she really should’ve rushed the stage at the 1:22 marker and called the official time of death for criticism. That was seconds after J.Lo, Randy, and Steven used words like “beautiful,” “mad cool” and “good job” to describe a performance that found “adorable” Eben Franckewitz wreaking havoc on Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain” like a baby doing its worst to a diaper.

Top 13 Guys: American Idol Recap
Let's start this season of American Idol right: with a multiple choice test. Don't worry, much like the Idol judges, I won't fail you, and the right answer will mean as much to you as the outcome of last night's show.
Which of the following was most annoying last night?
A: The fact that even with a new set and increased promises that this was the best season ever, nothing seemed to have changed from last year.
B. That the little constructive criticism given last night seemed to be aimed at producer favorites, feeling a little like Idol trying to use reverse psychology
C. That it was never certain exactly who had control over song choice
D. That we were supposed to laugh at the judge's antics, when in fact they were boorish and borderline offensive
E. That Heejun has been given the 'funny' edit,...

Season 11 goes live Tuesday night, featuring the top 13 male vocalists.
By James Montgomery

"American Idol" kicked off its live broadcasts Tuesday with a two-hour telecast that showcased the 12 (Ok, 13) male vocalists, though perhaps "showcased" was too strong a term. Because while a select few turned in standout moments, most of the guys seemed to struggle beneath the spotlight.
While we'd probably chalk it up to opening-night jitters, it's not like a second performance is assured: Only five guys are guaranteed to make it through to the top 10 (though, since this is "Idol," there's probably a judges' save in there or something). With so much on the line, who delivered the goods? Here's our grades for the guys — the good, the bad and the ugly — on a very full first night for "Idol."

At long last, we've made it through the wilderness; the "American Idol" auditions are finally at an end, and now the real competition (such as it is) begins. After treading water for weeks with music-free group nights and tedious eliminations, let's jump straight to the performances, where we witnessed the Top 12 male vocalists -- plus the mystery 13th contestant -- taking to the stage with the song of their choice, each one vying for your vote.
Reed Grimm: "Moves Like Jagger"
Reed is a contestant who is memorable enough for me to feel confident that I've enjoyed his previous performances, but not so memorable that I actually recall any of said performances. He made the improbable choice to sing Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera's "Moves Like Jagger," which was spawned by the success of NBC's rival talent show, "The Voice." Welcome to the Top 24! Tonight the top 12 13 guys take the stage to perform live with the American Idol band on Idol's brand new stage. And Ryan's hair takes its own zip code.
Speaking of this brand new stage, it's very gold. Very flashy. Very special-effects. Very, dare I say it, X-Factor.
Gone is the Coca-Cola lounge. Gone are the backless, uncomfortable stools contestants sat on when they weren't performing. In fact, there appears to be no seating for the girls at all. They're all standing in the pit in front of the stage. Perhaps they spent too much on the lighting and there just wasn't any room left in the budget for seats.
In addition to performances this week, we'll be learning a little more about each person through the handy, dandy Contestant Cams. This will, no doubt, make it harder for us to say goodbye to some. But,...

"This was a hot night!" Randy Jackson screamed at the end of American Idol's first live show Wednesday, when the top 12 - make that 13 - men took the stage. The last contestant to perform was "gentle giant" Jermaine Jones, who was previously eliminated from the competition. Randy said his uniquely low voice was a reason they brought him back. But his version of "Dance with My Father" was hardly the highlight of the two-hour episode. Phillip Phillips, who sang a growling version of "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins, may have that honor. "American Idol" kicked off its Top 24 with the 12 men (plus a mystery extra guy!). It's really throwing us off having the Top 24 be in the big theater and not the tiny one with the Coca Cola dungeon up top.
We also miss seeing them walk awkwardly towards the camera with finger guns and winks and whatnot, though there was plenty of creepy weirdness as Ryan introduced them down the line. Please don't do that ever again, Heejun Han.

If you close your eyes, this is great. Not that Reed is hard on the eyes, because he's not. But his sound is nice, he actually sounds a lot like Levine, only jazzy.
