The Conners star and executive producer Sara Gilbert, Rob Huebel (Childrens Hospital), Leland Orser (Brand New Cherry Flavor), Lyriq Bent (Four Brothers), J.R. Cacia (Infidel), Tate Donovan (Respect) and Kevin Dunn have been cast opposite Chris Messina in HBO Max pilot Verbatim, an anthology series from Brett Weiner, Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films, Left/Right Productions and the New York Times.
Verbatim, based on the New York Times Op-Docs digital series, tackles actual events with all dialogue taken from primary sources and presented verbatim. The pilot episode follows the story of the 2019 college admissions scandal.
The roles are not being revealed. Messina is believed to be playing the scheme’s ringleader Rick Singer, Gilbert is likely Laura Smith, the lead FBI investigator on the case who also is narrating the pilot; Orser, Donovan and Dunn may be playing three of the wealthy parents charged in the bribing scandal.
Because of the series’ anthology nature, I hear that, except for Messina, who is expected to link the different cases throughout the series, the rest of the cast are guest stars for the pilot only.
Red Hour’s Nicholas Weinstock, Jackie Cohn and Stiller executive produce with Left/Right’s Ken Druckerman and Banks Tarver and Kathleen Lingo for the New York Times. Scott Lochmus and Michelene Starnadori will produce.

Chris Messina has signed on to star in the HBO Max pilot “Verbatim,” TheWrap has confirmed.
The project, an anthology series from creator Brett Weiner and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films, will tackle the 2019 college admissions scandal using dialogue taken directly from real-life events.
“Verbatim” is based on Weiner’s New York Times digital series of the same name, itself an adaptation of Weiner’s 2014 short film. The original project used dialogue lifted straight from a 2010 legal deposition from a real estate company’s lawsuit against the Ohio records department.
Weiner discussed his approach to the original project in a 2014 interview with TheWrap. “I was adamant every line had to be verbatim from the court document — no cutting, rearranging or changing words,” he said at the time. “I had an awesome script supervisor stand next to me the entire day, just tugging on my sleeve whenever an actor got any word wrong.

Films based on true events are pretty commonplace, but one would be hard-pressed to find exchanges as bizarre and hilarious as the exchange Brett Weiner captured on film happening between real people in real life. In “Verbatim,” a government employee uses the most brilliant diversion tactic ever, and goes to extremes to belabor the point over a question about photocopying machines. “When you say photocopying machine, what do you mean?” he asks, and it's all downhill from there. Watch and Vote in TheWrap's 2014 Shortlist Film Festival Here Weiner lifted his dialogue straight from a legal deposition in 2010, when a real.

The 8th annual Sydney Underground Film Festival is a power-packed event featuring outrageous cult films, provocative documentaries and wild short films that will run September 4-7 at its usual haunt, The Factory Theater.
Opening Night: The fest opens with Housebound, a New Zealand horror comedy by Gerard Johnstone about a woman in trouble with the law who comes to believe that her family home is haunted. The film will be preceded by a performance by Renny Kodgers and a free pizza party; and followed by an after party.
Closing Night: The fest will close with the controversial German teen sex comedy Wetlands directed by David Wendt. The film will then be followed by a late-night after party.
Highlights: Usama Alshaibi‘s must see documentary American Arab — an intimate, socially relevatory and essential film — screens at 4 p.m. on Sept. 6. Read the Underground Film Journal review of American Arab.

When you think of sharp, hilarious and rapid-fire dialogue, you probably think of writers like the Coen brothers, Aaron Sorkin or Quentin Tarantino. You wouldn't think of a lawyer in Ohio trying to get a government employee to define what a photocopier is. And yet here we are with a short film from director Brett Weiner, who has taken the verbatim transcript from that deposition and used it as the script for a short film that seems like it fell out of a Coen brothers movie making fun of government employees. Seriously, just watch this. It's superbly acted, very nicely shot and edited, and is flat-out hilarious. This is art imitating life; life so unbelievably perfect that no artist could have written it better in the first place. Follow @PeterSHall...

The odds of having your short film included in this year’s Sundance Film Festival are .008 percent. Out of the 66 short film line-up (selected among 8,161 submissions) we find actress Rose McGowan move behind the camera for her directing debut (Dawn), we have Ain’t Them Bodies Saints producer Toby Halbrooks shovel out Dig (see pic above) and Todd Rohal (The Guatemalan Handshake) returns to the fest in between features with Rat Pack Rat. Filmmaker Magazine New Faces of Independent Film director Dean Fleischer-Camp rolls up his shirt sleeves with Catherine, Matthew Lessner returns to Park City with the helping hand Chapel Perilous while The Strange Ones (’11 accepted short) co-helmer Christopher Radcliff won’t be making a dissappearing act with Jonathan’s Chest. Finally docu feature-film helmer Lucy Walker moves into The Lion’s Mouth Opens. I’ll of course be covering several of these – look out for our coverage.

Short films can go a long way. Especially when they’re showcased at the Sundance Film Festival. The festival’s Shorts program, which was announced today, has a tradition of identifying remarkable filmmakers as well as introducing stories that ultimately make it to the big-screen as features. For example, David O. Russell brought his first film, a short titled Bingo Inferno to Sundance in 1987, while Half Nelson, which earned Ryan Gosling his first Oscar nomination, grew out of Ryan Fleck’s 2004 Sundance short titled, Gowanus, Brooklyn. “If you look back at the directors who got their start by having a short at Sundance,...

Screen Junkies has returned with a new 'honest' trailer, this time for The Notebook - just in time for Valentine's Day.
Since it was uploaded yesterday (February 12), the video has gained almost 90,000 hits.
The video description states: "Send this to your girlfriend so she doesn't make you watch The Notebook again."
The romantic film, starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling, is ripped to shreds by the directors of the trailer Andy Signore and Brett Weiner.
In the YouTube upload, The Notebook is humorously described as "the film that paved the way for millions of people to form unrealistic expectations of their real life relationships" and "a romance that will make nagging girlfriends ask, 'Why aren't you more like Ryan Gosling?'"
The duo's honest and witty approach to blockbuster movies have made their trailers incredibly popular.
The honest trailer for Skyfall has over half a million views.

Screen Junkies has returned with a new 'honest' trailer, mocking James Bond's highest grossing film, Skyfall.
The fake Bond trailer has gathered nearly 250,000 views in two days.
Directors Andy Signore and Brett Weiner tear apart different aspects of the movie but keep to the true Hollywood trailer style with their deep-voiced voiceover provided by Jon Bailey.
In the video description, Skyfall is described as "the highest grossing film in the Bond franchise featuring everything you love about 007: artsy fight scenes, boring landscape shots and one very morally questionable sex scene".
The four-minute clip covers all angles of the movie from the opening train scene to the questionable ending ("Wait, what happened to that hard-drive they were looking for? Wasn't that the whole point of the movie?").
This is their latest 'honest' trailer in the series. Their previous take on Prometheus has gathered over one million hits.

ScreenJunkies has debuted their latest Honest Trailer for Michael Bay's Transformers. I love the narration and the straightforward nature that this trailer is presented in. Watch the trailer above and let us know what you think. If I could get back the time wasted watching Transformers, I think that I might try. What about you, would you watch this movie knowing what you know now?
Here is a description:
Based on the cartoon shamelessly designed to sell toys, Michael Bay's Transformers is an incomprehensible mess that doesn't make any sense. But at least there's a lot of porny shots of Megan Fox! #HonestTrailers
Thanks Everybody!! More Honest Trailers are coming!! Tell us in the comments below what movie you'd like to see covered next!!!
