Rejoice, the saga is finally over. Andy Carroll has sealed his move to West Ham for a fee of around £15m, with add-ons depending on which source you’re paying attention to. When all is said and done my head knows that this is a deal in the very best interests of all involved but, still, my heart feels a slither of sadness for the striker’s departure.
When Andy Carroll turned up on January 31st 2011, like many fans, I immediately felt that the fantastically large fee would serve to bite us on the backside. I remember seeing the headlines, and praying that they were wrong. I didn’t mind the idea of signing Carroll, far from it, but the fee was ridiculous. It was unfair on the man himself, and made the club look foolish. Everybody understands that deadline day deals can carry a premium, especially if you’re...

Two teams with very different aspirations produced an interesting encounter at St. Mary’s stadium on Saturday afternoon, as Southampton brushed past an unusually laborious Liverpool.
Amidst the rain and mud that typified an English spring, it was the likes of Rickie Lambert, becoming the highest scoring Englishman in the Premier League, who felt most at home as the Saints secured a vital 3 points and gave their quest for Premier League survival a vital and timely boost.
Southampton hustled, fought and harried while Liverpool stalled, struggled and died, the Dr. Jekyll that so courageously defeated Tottenham last weekend giving way to an ugly, lumbering Mr. Hyde. All hopes of top 4 should now be put back where they were at the start of the season, while even a fifth place berth now looks unlikely for Brendan Rodger’s side.
The Red’s inconsistency has indeed become such a monster that fans...

Liverpool took the spoils in an entertaining encounter at Anfield to keep alive their slim hopes of finishing in the top four, while denting Spurs’ charge for third.
Spurs looked comfortable after taking a 2-1 lead, but their European hangover kicked in with two mistakes gifting Liverpool the victory.
Luis Suarez drew first blood after 21 minutes, latching on to Jose Enrique’s through ball to stab the ball past Hugo Lloris before the Frenchman had a chance to set himself.
Jan Vertonghen, fresh from his man of the match performance against Arsenal and goal against Inter Milan, equalised for Spurs on the stroke of half time, getting his head to an exquisite Gareth Bale cross to nod the ball in to Brad Jones’ bottom right hand corner.
Eight minutes in to the second half, the Belgian defender struck again, with Bale again the provider. The Welshman crossed an in-swinging free...

Liverpool have Martin Skrtel available again after the defender picked up a knee injury but he will likely start on the bench, while Daniel Sturridge has recovered from a thigh injury, and will likely start, having missed the 4-0 win over Wigan. Joe Allen will probably be the man he replaces. Fabio Borini, Martin Kelly and Brad Jones are all out.
Tottenham may be without Aaron Lennon, who had to be substituted in the Europa League tie against Inter Milan with a hamstring injury. Tom Huddlestone and Clint Dempsey are also still doubts heading into this game, while long-term absentees Sandro and Younes Kaboul remain out. Good news for Spurs is that both Emmanuel Adebayor and Moussa Dembele should be fit and will travel to Anfield.

The Fa Cup defeat to Oldham was not the only problem that came to pass this weekend for Liverpool Fc. Besides joining the long list of fourth round upsets, Liverpool have become terrifyingly aware of how desperately they need defensive depth.
Liverpool lined up with Brad Jones in goal, Andre Wisdom at right back, Sebastián Coates and Martin Skrtel in the centre, and Jack Robinson at left back. This back 5 does not send waves of confidence through the bodies of Liverpool fans. Many may argue that despite the loss, it was only Oldham, so there was no need for a better lineup, but what will be worrying for Liverpool fans is that this was essentially Liverpool’s second string, with one usual starter in Martin Skrtel.
Rodgers’ team have been put in this position through a combination of injury and lack of squad depth. The ideal starting back 5 of Reina,...

Matt Smith scored twice as a Dogged Oldham Athletic shocked seven times Fa Cup winners Liverpool at Boundary park.
Oldham started the game with the kind of passion and industry that their manager, Paul Dickov was known for in his playing days and took the lead after just 2 minutes. Some slack defending from Liverpool allowed Youssouf M’Changama to cross for Matt Smith, whose header deflected into the net off Martin Skrtel. Liverpool looked shell-shocked and unable to cope with the physical nature of Oldham’s game, as the League One strugglers continued to dictate the tempo of the game.
Despite their early dominance, there was still a feeling that it was only a matter of time until Liverpool began to create; Sure enough after 17 minutes, Luis Suarez picked up the ball in his own half, ran the length of the Oldham half unchallenged and, after the ball ran back...

A repeat of last season’s Third round tie sees an out of form Oldham Athletic welcome Brendan Rodgers’ improving Liverpool to Boundary Park. The game last year finished 5-1 to the premier league team and, although nothing is ever certain in football, it will be a huge shock if the Reds do not win again on Sunday.
Oldham are without a win in their last 8 League One games and currently sit just 4 points above the relegation zone, however they did pull off something of a giant killing in the previous round when they defeated Championship Nottingham Forest 3-2 at the City Ground. Robbie Simpson scored two for the Latics that day and his efforts, along with those of Former Liverpool Youngster Dean Bouzanis and Ex- Everton striker Jose Baxter, will be crucial if they are to get anything from this game.

Liverpool’s disgruntled goalkeeper Pepe Reina could be set to leave Anfield this month, with a move to Arsenal being touted.
It is understood the Spaniard has been unhappy with life on Merseyside ever since Arsene Wenger first tried to sign him to replace Manuel Almunia in 2010.
Then, Wenger offered Liverpool £20 million for the goalkeeper’s services, which Liverpool rejected. However, the reasons for Liverpool rejecting Arsenal’s advances have irked Reina ever since.
Liverpool were under the ownership of Tom Hicks and George Gillett at the time, who were in the process of negotiating the sale of the club to Fenway Sports Group (Fsg).
When the offer came in for Reina, the keeper was said to be interested in a move to North London, however the offer was blocked by the Liverpool administration.
Not because Reina was so valued at Anfield, or because the club thought he had a long term future with them.

Everton take on Liverpool in this afternoon’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. Kick-of in this mouth-watering Premier League tie is at 1.30pm and the match will be screened live on Sky Sports 1.
Here’s the team news ahead of the game;
Blues manager David Moyes is hopeful that right-back Tony Hibbert and star midfielder Marouane Fellaini are fit for today’s game. The latter missed last weekend’s draw with Queens Park Rangers because of a knee problem, while Hibbert’s calf injury has kept him on the sidelines for over a month.
Darron Gibson’s thigh injury rules him out, whilst playmaker Steven Pienaar serves his one-match ban for his controversial red-card at Loftus Road last weekend.

For better or worse, the Europa League provides a distraction from the bread and butter of the Premier League. Many bemoan the amount of games it involves, and insist it lessens your chances of success at the weekend. To a degree, of course, there’s some truth in that. But it’s not entirely without merit. It’s still a competition of decent pedigree, and a great platform from which youngsters can attempt to prove themselves to their respective gaffers. Especially in the group stages.
Last night Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool took on Switzerland’s Young Boys, fielding a completely fresh eleven. Not only that, but the team was young. Very young. I think somebody did the maths, and if Jamie Carragher wasn’t on the pitch, the average age of Rodgers’ team would have been 13 years old…
The line-up offered competitive Liverpool debuts to Andre Wisdom, Suso and Ousamma Assaidi.

According to the Daily Mirror, Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has until January to prove to Brendan Rogers that he still deserves to be the undisputed No.1 and can fit into the new style of playing.
After a shaky start to the new campaign where Reina has made bad errors against Hearts and Arsenal, the new Kop boss could consider a move to reunite with Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm in the January transfer window for added competition for places.
The Mirror claims that the 3o-year-old Spaniard has found it difficult adjusting to Rodgers’ philosophy of playing football out from the back and encouraging defenders to pass and receive from the ‘keeper. If Reina doesn’t improve, Rodgers could go back to 28-year-old Vorm who impressed in his first season in the Premier League and has more experience playing the Northern Irishman’s possession based philosophy.

Brendan Rodger’s first competitive match in charge of Liverpool got off to a winning start as the Reds beat Fc Gomel 1-0 at the Central Stadion in Belarus.
Stewart Downing’s 67th minute piledriver gave them the important away goal to take to the second leg of the Europa League third round qualifier, but it was by no means smooth sailing for Liverpool, with the opposition proving difficult to break down, as well as causing some real problems at the back.
Brad Jones was forced to pull of a couple of decent saves, and Gomel midfielder Siarhei Kazeka smashed the ball against the post shortly before Downing’s goal.
Rodger’s named a line-up that was slightly stronger than many expected for the qualifier, with Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson and Glen Johnson all starting.

Liverpool has emerged as a potential destination for Birmingham City goalkeeper Jack Butland this summer according to The Daily Mail. Brendan Rodgers has reportedly earmarked Butland, who has established himself as Stuart Pearce’s number one for Team Gb in the London Olympics, as a straight replacement for Australian keeper, Brad Jones who Liverpool are looking to move on to Norwich City.
Butland, who spent last season on loan at Chesterfield, was selected as part of Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 England squad and has since seen his stock rise and rise following a string of impressive displays in the Olympics. Should he finish 2012 at Anfield it will undoubtedly cap an unforgettable year for the 19 year old who, international appearances aside, has only ever played League Two football.
But that hasn’t put off Rodgers who believes that Butland is the perfect man to put pressure on first choice goalkeeper Pepe Reina next season.

Team news ahead of Liverpool vs West Brom in the Premier League this afternoon. Kick-off time at Anfield is at 4pm.
Goalkeeper Jose Reina returns for Liverpool and will be in-between the sticks for today’s game after serving his three-match suspension for his red card against Newcastle on April 1st. Doni also returns after his suspension but Brad Jones will be hoping to pip in to a place on the bench after playing in Liverpool’s Fa Cup semi-final win over Everton last week.
Left-back Jose Enrique may be recalled having surprisingly been left out of the game at Wembley. Striker Andy Carroll will be hoping to keep his place in the side after scoring winning goals in his last two matches.
West Brom forward Marc-Antoine Fortune is a fitness doubt with a hamstring injury. He came off in last week’s 1-0 victory over Qpr at the Hawthorns...
