Focus Features proved this weekend that Jane Austen’s classic of romantic misadventures and the humor that goes with it remains timeless. Emma., Autumn de Wilde’s visionary and fresh adaptation of the Austen novel, opened in five theaters in New York and Los Angeles to strong numbers, grossing an estimated $230,000. This brought the per-theater average to $46,000, which is the highest of any specialty opening this year — not too shabby for the Anya Taylor-Joy-led period rom-com.
The five runs across the Landmark, Alamo Drafthouse and Angelika in New York and the Arclight Hollywood and Landmark in Los Angeles are all reporting impressive numbers as the film sits at an 88% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences seem to love it as they have ranked it at 100%.

After a close box office battle, Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” pulled ahead of Disney and 20th Century’s “The Call of the Wild” on North American charts.
The two movies had been in a surprising tug-of-war for first place. Heading into the weekend, “Sonic” was expected to easily dominate again but Harrison Ford’s “Call of the Wild” ended up taking the top spot on Friday. Ultimately, “Sonic” finished the weekend with $26.3 million, enough to defeat “Call of the Wild” and its $25 million debut.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” became an unexpected box office hit after launching with a stellar $70 million over the Presidents’ Day holiday weekend. In its second week of release, the movie crossed the $100 million mark in North America and has surpassed $200 million globally.

Filmmaker Autumn de Wilde is serving up a fresh new take on the Jane Austen novel with the film Emma., which opens in theaters this weekend. Complete with a stylized punctuated period in the title, the new version is a Focus Features co-production with Working Title and Blueprint Productions and joins the ranks of other Hollywood iterations of the classic story. This includes the 1996 iteration starring Gwyneth Paltrow, a modern Indian version titled Aisha in 2010 and, of course, Amy Heckerling’s way existential adaptation Clueless starring Alicia Silverstone. There were also countless TV versions including the 1996 ITV film, starring Kate Beckinsale in the titular role as well as the 2009 four-part BBC miniseries starring Romola Garai. That being said, it seems like the world can’t get enough of this Austen’s comedy of “love and all its surprises”, but based on the trailer alone, de Wilde’s cracks open a...

“Sonic the Hedgehog” will have to worry about more than just a waxy mustached villain this weekend. Paramount’s family film will face box office competition from another kid-friendly adventure, Disney and 20th Century’s “The Call of the Wild.”
Harrison Ford and a dog named Buck star in “The Call of the Wild,” the latest big-screen adaptation of Jack London’s early 1900s novel. The PG film is expected to bring in $10 million to $18 million when it opens in 3,700 venues in North America over the weekend, likely not enough to supplant reigning champ “Sonic.”
After “Sonic’s” stellar $70 million launch over the Presidents’ Day holiday — cementing a new opening weekend record for video game adaptations — the movie should easily top box office charts again. “Sonic” could add another $25 million to $30 million to its domestic haul if it holds similarly to other video game adaptations like “Detective Pikachu” or Dwayne Johnson’s “Rampage.

At the height of her fame, actor Jean Seberg was targeted by the FBI for her political beliefs. Clandestine surveillance and smear campaigns helped damage her career, destroy her personal relationships, and led her to doubt her sanity. In Seberg, director Benedict Andrews explores both the actor, played by Kristen Stewart, and an FBI agent assigned to her case (Jack O’Connell). The script (by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse) also shows how the Cointelpro operation helped undermine the civil rights movement. The Amazon Studios release opened theatrically December 13. In Seberg, . It’s such a stellar turn that she almost redeems this well-meaning but wobbly biopic — which earns points for trying to do her justice. Someone needed to. In playing Jean Seberg, Stewart embodies the question at the core of the film: How does a college girl from Marshalltown, Iowa — who was plucked from obscurity in 1957 to play Joan of Arc in a major motion picture — end up dead in Paris 22 years later, her body found decomposing in her car with a bottle of pills by her side? Having spoken to Kristen Stewart numerous times over the years, her passion for her work is always at the forefront. That’s why it was no surprise that after an incredibly long publicity campaign for “Charlie’s Angels” this fall, she was willing to jump on the phone to discuss “Seberg,” a new true-life drama opening in limited release on Friday. When Stewart believes in a project such as the Benedict Andrews-directed picture, she pretty much stands by it no matter what.

Despite being years removed from the Twilight franchise, having spent the majority of her career at this point in independent cinema, Kristen Stewart still is lumped in as someone who’s just a part of the Hollywood machine. That ignores a whole host of tremendous performances by Stewart, but the bad rap remains. Today, Stewart has another indie would be awards hopeful to share in the biopic Seberg. She is as good as she’s ever been here, but the film itself is not on her level. It’s a shame too, since in better hands, she’d be an Oscar nominee this year in Best Actress, I can all but assure you of that much. The movie is a biopic, as previously mentioned, looking at and taking inspiration from a seminal moment in the life of Jean Seberg (Stewart). Set in the late 1960’s, Seberg is an actress, darling of the French New Wave,...

Pop culture creates goddesses only to offer them up for sacrifice, and over the course of her career, Kristen Stewart has no doubt gotten close enough to that pyre to smell the brimstone. So she’s a natural to play Jean Seberg in “Seberg,” about the Iowa girl who became an international movie star, only to be targeted and ultimately destroyed by the FBI because of her affiliation with the Black Panthers.
And while “Seberg” is rarely as great as its lead actress, the film does shed light on a tragic corner of American history that’s not discussed nearly enough — the U.S. citizens who had their lives shattered by J. Edgar Hoover’s secret Cointelpro (counter-intelligence program) surveillance that targeted anyone the FBI considered “subversive,” be they Vietnam War protesters, black or indigenous activists, even environmentalists.

Stewart is the lead of the Jean Seberg biographical drama “Seberg,” opening in theaters this December from Amazon Studios. The film is the latest psychological drama from “Una” director Benedict Andrews. “Seberg” made its world premiere out of competition at the 2019 Venice Film Festival.
“Seberg” stars Stewart as the French New Wave icon during the 1960s, when she was targeted by the FBI because of her political and romantic involvement with civil rights activist Hakim Jamal. In addition to Stewart, the “Seberg” cast includes Jack O’Connell, Anthony Mackie, Colm Meaney, Margaret Qualley, Vince Vaughn, Zazie Beetz, Stephen Root and Yvan Atta. The film is based on a true story.

According to a recent survey, only 17 percent of Americans say they can trust the government to do the right thing. That figure is unlikely to increase once audiences get a look at some buzz worthy films coming soon from Amazon Studios, The Report and Seberg. Both films, based on true stories, focus on shocking misconduct and illegal activity at high levels of the executive branch.
Representing The Report at the Contenders Los Angeles Saturday was writer-director Scott Z. Burns, producer Jennifer Fox and cast members Adam Driver and Jon Hamm. Driver plays the real life Daniel J. Jones, a staffer in the office of Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein who was assigned to investigate the CIA’s detention and interrogation program devised after 9/11. The report he compiled, large portions of which were redacted before public release, exposed a program of torture that included waterboarding detainees dozens of times.

Amazon Studios blasted off Deadline’s Contenders London this year with four of its fourth quarter titles including the Kristen Stewart feature Seberg, Scott Z. Burns’ The Report, the Felicity Jones-Eddie Redmayne period reteam The Aeronauts and Alma Har’el’s Shia Labeouf autobiographically inspired Honey Boy.
Seberg, directed by Benedict Andrews stars Stewart as Breathless actress Jean Seberg who was a target of the FBI due to her political and romantic affiliations with civil rights activist Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie). Jack O’Connell and Zazie Beetz also star.
Andrews always had that image of Seberg in his head from Breathless, “wiping her thumb across her lips,” but it wasn’t until he read Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse’s script that he learned about this “shadowed and buried period of her life.” The pic for the filmmaker “felt like a story that speaks urgently to us now,...

Amazon Studios is dating Benedict Andrews’ Jean Seberg biopic “Seberg,” starring Kristen Stewart as the Hollywood actress turned political target of the title, for award season prime time on December 13. (Deadline has the scoop.)
Poorly reviewed out of the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Andrews’ true-to-life drama about Seberg’s frantic descent into paranoia after becoming the target of an FBI counter-intelligence probe in the late 1960s faces an uphill box-office climb during the noisy awards fray; Amazon is more likely branding the title for eventual Prime availability.
“Seberg” is inspired by the real events about the French New Wave ingénue and icon discovered by Otto Preminger (who tortured her on the set of 1957’s “Saint Joan” and 1958’s “Bonjour Tristesse”) and Jean-Luc Godard (1960’s earth-shaking “Breathless”). San Sebastian – On Friday, Kristen Stewart and Benedict Andrews’ political thriller “Seberg” plays at the 67th San Sebastian Film Festival, where it opens Perlak, a section dedicated to the Spanish premieres of major international films. The star and her director addressed the media prior to the screening in the festival’s first high-profile press conference, held at the seaside Kursaal congress center.
In the film, Stewart plays real life American actress Jean Seberg, who starred in Jean-Luc Godard’s “Breathless.” Set against a turbulent political backdrop of late-1960s U.S.A., “Seberg” tells a fictionalized version of how the star was targeted by the FBI through an illegal surveillance program, Cointelpro, after voicing her support of the Black Panther Party and her romantic involvement with civil rights activist Hakim Jamal.
Eventually, and under dubious circumstances, the actress took her own life.

Stewart received a honorary award in Deauville before the French premiere of Benedict Andrews’s “Seberg” in which the actress stars as Jean Seberg, a French New Wave icon who starts supporting the Black Panthers and becomes the target of an agressive counter-intelligence program put in place by the FBI.
The Deauville tribute highlighted Stewart’s eclectic acting career through a montage of clips from her key roles in films, including “Panic Room,” “Into The Wild,” “The Twilight,” “The Runaways,” “On The Road,” “Café Society,” “Clouds of Sils Maria,” “Personal Shopper” and the upcoming “Charlie’s Angels.”

Roger Deakins arrived at Tiff with his new film “The Goldfinch” only four weeks after having finished shooting “1917,” due out later this year. The adaptation of the Donna Tart novel and World War I film are very different projects, but they both represent the type of prestige studio dramas Deakins has always been drawn to and have defined his celebrated career.
“I’m so thankful for both these two films, because they are such a rarity these days,” said Deakins, who is currently looking for his next gig. Pickings have become increasingly slim compared to when he started his career.
“I haven’t got anything, if anybody has any work out there that’d be good,” joked the 14-time Oscar nominated cinematographer. “It’s a different world. There’s much fewer of that middle budget range. There’s a bunch of lower-budget films, thank God, so people get to experiment,...

Watch Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless—Ok, watch it again—and it is impossible not to be struck by the mysterious, stunning, enigmatic Jean Seberg. Here was an actor clearly destined for icon status, a Midwesterner with a European sensibility and piercing onscreen intelligence. Offscreen, Seberg was a woman under siege by the American government, and this tumultuous period of her life—the late 1960s and early 1970s—is covered in Benedict Andrews’s fascinating, ultimately disappointing and oddly shaped Seberg. Starring the ever-splendid Kristen Stewart, a gifted actor who captures Seberg’s look and grace, the film is a watchable failure.
Plaguing it is a startling lack of context. The film opens with a rather startling yet metaphorically obvious re-creation of the burning of Joan of Arc in Otto Preminger’s Saint Joan. The audience is quickly plunged directly into Seberg’s post-Breathless, post-Saint Joan life without any greater sense...

Kristen Stewart, whose performance in the title role of Amazon’s Seberg has garnered no shortage of buzz from Venice through this weekend’s Toronto premiere, sees no way to separate politics from art.
“I think it’s kind of dense,” she said of the notion of making a “de-politicized” work. “There’s no way to avoid it. Every person you associate with, every word or step, that’s presenting how you function. Everything you do is human and political and there’s no difference between those two things.”
Stewart made the comments during a press conference Sunday at Toronto, accompanied by screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse as well as director Benedict Andrews. Seberg weaves together the personal and the political, recounting two years in the life of actress Jean Seberg, who endured extensive and invasive FBI surveillance due to her ties to the Black Panthers and similar groups.

In order to play the doomed film star Jean Seberg in Amazon Studios’s “Seberg,” Kristen Stewart channeled some of her own experiences with invasive paparazzi.
“I didn’t have to fake it,” Stewart said in a wide-ranging interview at Variety‘s studio at the Toronto International Film Festival. “I know that feeling of sort of feeling stolen from. It’s thievery.”
Seberg became a fashion icon after appearing in Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 movie, “Breathless.” And Stewart said that after meeting with director Benedict Andrews once, she knew he would do Seberg’s story justice.
Beginning in 1968, Seberg was followed by the FBI’s insidious Cointelpro surveillance program, which was designed by J. Edgar Hoover to undermine leftwing political activists. Seberg, who had aligned herself with the Civil Rights Movement, was taped and photographed wherever she went — and not only because she was famous. Jean Seberg at only 17 years of age at a screen test for her film debutKristen Stewart as Jean Seberg in Seberg (2019)
Jean Seberg is a largely under-seen screen star among contemporary moviegoers and even cinéastes. I myself was unfamiliar with her work, save maybe Airport (1970), until a couple of years ago when Katrina Longworth, of the absolutely essential podcast, You Must Remember This, embarked on a nine-part journey that chronicled the parallel rise and, in terms of public favor, fall of Jane Fonda and Jean Seberg, circa the late 1950s into the ‘70s.
That Jane Fonda of all people purportedly envied Seberg, a friend and fellow American expat in ’60s France, for her edgy, avant-garde segues into French New Wave cinema is itself intriguing. But it’s the eclectic filmography of the beleaguered, ill-fated Seberg, who died tragically (at only 40) in the summer of 1979, that actually warrants our collective fascination,...

The second feature from Benedict Andrews, “Seberg” opens in 1968 towards the end of actor Jean Seberg’s (Kristen Stewart) career. After considerable success starring in French New Wave films like Jean-Luc Godard’s “Breathless,” Seberg returns to Hollywood to continue working, leaving behind a young son and a loving (but occasionally unfaithful) husband. But the film soon becomes less concerned with her place in Hollywood than the events that drove her career to its end.
