“Call My Agent!” producer Mother Production and Charles Gillibert’s CG Cinéma (“Annette”) are joining forces to create TV production label Les Saisons. The outfit will kick off with the series adaptation of Leïla Slimani’s critically acclaimed novel “Le Pays des autres.”
Slimani’s novel, which was published in more than 30 countries and sold 670,000 units in France, is part of a trilogy charting the tumultuous love story between a young French woman and a Moroccan soldier. A new study from the advocacy group Collectif 50/50 surveying French films from 2019 has revealed that 62% of local film protagonists are perceived as white, highlighting the underrepresentation of visible minorities in French cinema.
The study, titled Cinégalités, was unveiled during a day-long conference hosted by Collectif 50/50 on Dec. 8 with several panels discussing the need for greater diversity and gender equality, as well initiatives aimed at curbing sexual harassment and violence in the film and TV industries.
Out of the 115 highest-budgeted and highest grossing French films of 2019, the survey showed that only 13% of leading characters are perceived as non-white; 49% are perceived as white males; 23% as white females; 6% as non-white females; 7% as Black; 8% as Arab and 1% as Asian.
Although it remains unconstitutional in France to collect data on the racial, ethnic or religious background of its citizens, the study did receive the support of the French culture minister’s task force Mission diversité et égalité,...

Set during the roar of the early 1920s, the show follows a one-time war medic forced to take on not one, but two new identities after she witnesses a murder performed by a pair of government officials.
The series, which world premiered in Series Mania’s French Competition, begins with a rush of activity. Within 15 minutes, protagonist Louise Kerlac loses the hard-won freedoms she gained during the First World War, witnesses two government goons murdering a family friend, and for her trouble, gets framed for the murder.
When her shell-shocked brother Antoine (Tom Hygreck) chooses to change his name and reinvent himself as an artist, Louise cuts her hair, binds her chest, and assumes his identity – as well as the spot reserved for him on the Paris police force.

“Sharp Objects” and “Run” producer-distributor Entertainment One is reassuring partners of its commitment to drama following its acquisition by toy giant Hasbro.
EOne has always cultivated a strong set of procedurals, such as ABC’s Nathan Fillion-starrer “The Rookie” and Fox’s Stephen Dorff-led “Deputy,” but has also gained traction with cable propositions such as HBO’s “Sharp Objects” and the forthcoming thriller “Run” from “Fleabag” creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who both produces and stars.

The fourth season of hit French drama “Call My Agent!” will be its last, according to the show’s producers.
Aurélien Larger and Harold Valentin of Paris-based Mother Production, which produces the show with Mon Voisin Productions, have confirmed to Variety that the comedy – originated by French public broadcaster France Télévisions and known locally as “Dix pour cent” – is to end with the current season, which is currently shooting.
“With these characters, we feel we’ve told what needed to be told,” says Valentin. “Rather than do something like ‘The Good Wife’ where we split the team and create an antagonist or enemy, we are happy with what we’re doing. It’s the right time to close the show.”
Asked whether a feature film could perhaps materialize further down the line, Valentin notes that “some people talk about it. We’ll see.”

Bron Studios has boarded a remake of French comedy Call My Agent! and W1A creator John Morton will write, direct and exec produce.
The Tully studio will produce the series with Man In The High Castle producer Headline Pictures, which acquired the English-language rights back in 2017. At the time Veep writer Georgia Pritchett was attached to write.

French drama project Purple, inspired by the true story behind the creation of a real-life iconic 1990s lesbian nightclub in Paris, has clinched the top €50,000 prize in the Co-Pro Pitching Sessions event of TV festival and industry event Series Mania, running March 22-30 in the northern French city of Lille.
A total of 16 projects were pitched at the project development and financing event, which continues today with one-on-one meetings and is a key pole of Series Mania’s three-day Forum industry programme.
