Zack Snyder’s braggadocio reaches new heights as the director argues to Joe Rogan that his movie Rebel Moon did better in theaters than Barbie.
“According to him, Netflix’s whole distribution model is so ‘crazy’ that he thinks more people have probably seen his movie Rebel Moon—Part One: A Child Of Fire than Barbie (when it was in theaters)—due to Netflix’s ubiquity and the fact that you can just throw something on without having to go out to a theater and buy a separate ticket. That seems completely absurd…”

Released in 2009, director James Cameron’s film Avatar became the first movie to officially gross more than $2 billion. Then it took him thirteen years to get a sequel into theatres, so it wasn’t clear if the follow-up was going to be able to replicate that success. But then, sure enough, Avatar: The Way of Water also grossed more than $2 billion, paving the way for not only Avatar 3 (which is scheduled to reach theatres on December 19, 2025) but also Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 – which will be released on December 21, 2029 and December 19, 2031, respectively. What we know about the future sequels so far is that Avatar 3 will introduce villainous Na’vi known as the Ash People, Avatar 4 will “go nuts in a good way“ (following a six year time jump), and Avatar 5 will involve a journey to Earth. If things keep going this well as the franchise continues,...

After Morbius single-handedly sucked the life out of Sony and Marvel’s extended Spider-Verse, the studios could stand to mix things up as the initiative continues to progress. To say this puts pressure on the upcoming film Madame Web is an understatement. In addition to the handicap of arriving in Morbius’s wake, most people have no idea who the movie’s title character is. Thankfully, Madame Web producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is up for the challenge.
Talking with Collider‘s Steve Weintraub about the mysterious Spider-Man-adjacent film, di Bonaventura says that Madame Web is not what people expect from a superhero movie. “It’s a different kind of movie in that universe … It’s almost, in a way, more of a thriller,” said di Bonaventura. Adding, “it’s not an action piece, because, in a way, [Madam Web’s] skill set is not conducive to an action piece.”

When word got out that Sylvester Stallone was strapping on his climbing gear as Gabriel Walker for a sequel to Renny Harlin’s Cliffhanger, we at JoBlo could barely contain our excitement. Getting behind the camera for Cliffhanger 2, a follow-up to what is objectively one of Stallone’s best films, is Ric Roman Waugh, who recently spoke with Collider‘s Steve Weintraub about plot details for Walker’s next climb.
One year after starring alongside Estelle Getty in the familial comedy Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, Sylvester Stallone strapped in for a nerve-jangling blockbuster with Cliffhanger. James Mangold is quickly becoming one of the busiest filmmakers in Hollywood. Mangold confirmed he’ll write Swamp Thing earlier today at Star Wars Celebration 2023. Collider‘s Steve Weintraub spoke with Mangold, who confirmed he would pick up his pen for the Guardian of the Green.

DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn is laying the superhero smackdown on a new casting rumor circulating online. According to Gunn, whispers related to Euphoria’s Jacob Elordi playing Superman in a new film are false. In addition to dashing the hopes and dreams of Gen Zers everywhere, Gunn pointed out that casting for a new Superman will take time. For starters, Gunn wants to wait until a script for a new Superman movie is near completion before searching for the studio’s latest Man of Steel. While Gunn is teasing a few announcements for January, the identity of the new Superman will not be one of them.

Shawn Levy is facing a lot of pressure from Deadpool fans to keep the character on-model for his MCU debut. Marvel typically shies away from anything close to R-rated action. Still, Levy wants everyone to rest assured that Ryan Reynolds‘ motor-mouthed killer will remain as foul and ferocious as ever. Speaking with Collider‘s Steve Weintraub, Levy offered an update on Deadpool 3’s progress, saying it’s one of the best creative experiences of his life and that his elation has nothing to do with the film’s mature subject matter.

Monday night, Paramount hosted an early screening of Damien Chazelle’s highly anticipated new film “Babylon,” and reactions to the comedic epic set in the Golden Age of Hollywood are as wild and grandiose as the era it depicts.
Out Dec. 23, the film is the Oscar-winning “La La Land” writer-director’s first feature since 2018, and in his own words, his most ambitious project yet. The A-list cast is led by “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” co-stars Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt, as well as newcomer Diego Calva. Olivia Wilde, Flea, Jean Smart, Tobey Maguire and Spike Jonze among many others also star in this fictionalized account of big dreams and bigger debauchery in 1920s Hollywood.
A first trailer, released in September, promised entertainment and chaos in equal measure, with characters narrowly avoiding certain death on movie sets, falling off of balconies at sumptuous parties and snorting lines of coke.

In the span of its first handful of episodes, "Andor" has brought a completely new and much-needed creative revitalization to the "Star Wars" franchise. Much of this has to do with the fact that creator Tony Gilroy ("Michael Clayton," the "Bourne" trilogy) put aside any questions of studio interference -- like the kind that plagued the production of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" -- and simply told the boldly visionary story he set out to tell. But part of that success also came from the clever construction of the first season as a whole.
Split up into a number of mini-arcs, "Andor" has generally featured the same pairing of writer and director attached to three or four blocks of episodes at a time. Director Toby Haynes and Gilroy teamed up for the first few episodes, Susanna White and Dan Gilroy took over for the next three, and Haynes and...

Tom Hardy is an incredibly intense actor. Even if he's making something as goofily mainstream as "Venom," he throws everything he's got into the role. This can be a bit off-putting at times. His thick Brooklyn accent as Eddie Brock is a wildly heightened variation on the character he played in Michaêl R. Roskam's hugely underrated "The Drop"; it takes some getting used to, and some people just can't get there. But, hey, at least you can understand what he's saying, as opposed to his voice-modulated portrayal of Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises."
In any event, be it a comic book movie or a deathly serious Alejandro González Iñárritu drama, Hardy fully commits – even if he's not entirely sure where the film is headed. This was the case with Christopher Nolan's "Inception," a metatextual action film that unfolds on a grand, blockbuster scale. He knew he was...

There was much rejoicing in 2009 when George Miller announced that the long-anticipated "Mad Max: Fury Road," which had been languishing in development hell for over a decade, would at last commence principal photography in 2011. But there was some consternation amongst the franchise's fans in 2010 when Miller disclosed that Tom Hardy would be replacing Mel Gibson, who'd shot to superstardom in the series' title role. A Mad Max movie without Gibson? Could you believe it?
Well, yeah, most people who kept abreast of current events could. Gibson had spent the better part of the 2000s spiraling. He'd been accused of battering his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, caught on tape firing off racist and sexist slurs, and making all kinds of anti-semitic comments. To the extent that he was inebriated in these moments, and, subsequently, sought forgiveness for his behavior and treatment for his addictions, some might've held that he deserved the opportunity to resume his filmmaking career.

To the extent that he was inebriated in these moments, and, subsequently, sought forgiveness for his behavior and treatment for his addictions, some might've held that he deserved the opportunity to resume his filmmaking career.

Fantasy fans have barely had the chance to catch their breath after the "House of the Dragon" premiere took viewers back to Westeros for the first time in years. Now, a different world of magic is about to make a comeback, with "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power." The new Prime Video series is set to debut September 2, 2022, and thanks to the specifics of the rights deal secured by Amazon Studios, it will pull not from J.R.R. Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings" books, but from lesser-known Middle-earth history texts, like the books' appendices.
"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" has a lot riding on its success: the series reportedly has a budget of over 400 million for its first season, which would make it the most expensive TV show ever made. Those big numbers could translate to great storytelling and huge success, or,...

Hollywood has a long history of taking stories about other cultures, and, well, white-washing them. In the olden days, they'd straight up just put a white actor in an Asian role, like Mickey Rooney in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and Peter Lorre as the title character in the Mr. Moto films, which was a series about a Japanese secret agent made in the 1930s, a time notoriously unfriendly to any non-white folks.
In recent times "yellow face" is pretty far in the rearview mirror, culturally speaking, but what we do still see more than we should is recasting, hence the hubbub around the Scarlett Johansson "Ghost in the Shell" adaptation as recently as 2017. Representation has been getting better, much to the chagrin of a lot of very angry YouTubers and Twitch streamers, but it's still no guarantee that we won't get a white cast in an adaptation of material about non-white people.

The last time Deadpool director Tim Miller was here at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, he was promoting his R-rated revival of the Terminator series, Terminator: Dark Fate.
There was a lot of hope around the film, and Miller was set to right the wrongs of previous installments. Per James Cameron’s suggestion, he returned the sequel to a hardcore rating. Not only did he make sure Arnold Schwarzenegger was back, but Linda Hamilton, too; the last time she starred in the action series was Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
However, the pic tanked at the box office with 62M domestic, 261M WW; the second lowest grossing sequel in the franchise after the original installment.
At today’s Collider panel Directors on Directing, editor Steve Weintraub asked Miller, “Do you think there’s a future in another Terminator movie, almost a Jason Blum version?”

On Saturday, Keanu Reeves reunited with filmmaker Francis Lawrence (who still has a replica of The Holy Shotgun in his possession!) and producer Akiva Goldsman to reflect on their collaboration 15 years ago on Constantine, which featured Reeves in the title role as a demon hunter looking to earn his way back into the good graces of the man upstairs. While Constantine was a moderate success upon its release in 2005, the film has continued to gain a strong following over the years (and for good reason – it Rules), and the trio came together this weekend to discuss their experiences working together on Constantine, sequel ideas and more.
Here’s a look at some of the highlights from the 15th Anniversary Constantine panel, which was moderated by Steve Weintraub from Collider.
Akiva Goldsman on how he initially got involved with Constantine: I had a deal at Warner Bros. at the time.

The 2005 film Constantine, based on DC/Vertigo’s popular Hellblazer comic book about a mystic who can communicate with angels and demons, was not a resounding success. But the movie’s principals — actor Keanu Reeves, director Francis Lawrence and producer Akiva Goldsman — very much wanted to make a sequel.
“Boy, we wanted to. We wanted to make a hard ‘R’ sequel,” said Goldsman during a Comic-Con@Home panel, hosted by Collider’s Steve Weintraub, in which Reeves, Lawrence and Goldsman all looked back at the comic book adaptation.
“We’d probably make it tomorrow,” Goldsman continued, “To the studios who made it, Village Roadshow and Warner Bros., it was always a little bit of a feathered fish. Its oddness…the way it was equally comfortable in a character scene between Keanu and Rachel (Weisz) as it is with demons flying, hurling themselves at a man who going to light his...

Star Wars has always been a story about family and the legacies that we each give ourselves over to, rebel against, or build for ourselves. The same is true on the production side, particularly since that galaxy far, far away was annexed by the House of Mouse. Most notably, Leia Organa actress Carrie Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, appeared throughout the Sequel Trilogy as Lt. Connix and eventually stood in (with a bit of computer-generated assistance) as a young Leia herself in The Rise of Skywalker after her mother’s passing.
That tradition has also extended behind the camera, as last November’s fourth chapter of the Disney+ streaming series The Mandalorian, “Sanctuary,” was directed by Jurassic World co-star Bryce Dallas Howard. She, in turn, is the eldest daughter of Academy Award winner Ron Howard, whose performing pedigree goes all the way back to his time playing Opie Taylor on...

I think it’s safe to say directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are having a great year so far. Who are they, you might ask? Well, they’re the hot new filmmakers behind Bad Boys for Life, the third installment in the Will Smith/Martin Lawrence buddy cop franchise, which is exceeding all expectations both financially and critically.
The action flick raked in more than $62 million over its four-day holiday weekend, which is far greater than analysts predicted. It’s also getting the best reviews of the series, scoring a 75 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Not bad for a franchise that’s been dormant for two decades, eh? A fourth entry is already in the works too.

With just over five weeks to go until it hits cinemas, Captain Marvel has been screened for a lucky few individuals. So how did this early look at Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie go down? Well, it’s too soon for a full review to surface, but we do know who the standout character of Brie Larson’s film might be. And no, it’s not Carol Danvers. Or Nick Fury. Or even Phil Coulson or Jude Law’s Mar-Vell.
Collider’s Steve Weintraub took to Twitter to talk about what he’d heard about the Captain Marvel screening, revealing that the folks who saw it say that Carol’s cat Goose was the true star. “Hearing #CaptainMarvel screened. After it ended everyone was talking about the cat,” Weintraub wrote, attaching a Gif of the moment from the trailer where Fury pets Goose. “Stole the show. Must. See. This.

I didn’t have particularly high hopes for Bohemian Rhapsody, but despite its torturous production, it turned out way better than I expected. My favorite sequence by far was the film’s climactic recreation of Queen’s iconic performance during 1985’s Live Aid. This was perhaps the highlight of the band’s career, showcasing Freddie Mercury at his most potent and powerful. So, the news that the upcoming home video release will include a full recreation of it is good to hear as far as I’m concerned.
20th Century Fox revealed what we should expect earlier today, and on top of the full 22-minute recreation of Live Aid, we’ll also get a couple of making-of documentaries entitled Rami Malek: Becoming Freddie, The Look and Sound of Queen and Recreating Live Aid. Given the cultural phenomenon that Frozen ended up being, it’s certainly a bit odd that the sequel will end up having taken six years to make it to theaters, but any Disney fans who’ve been counting down those days may be happy to hear that the first trailer for Frozen 2 is on the way.
Seeing how the first flick managed to integrate itself into our pop culture landscape at a rate that few, if any, movies have matched this decade, hype and excitement is high for the follow-up. The next big Disney movie to be released in theaters in Mary Poppins Returns, so could these trailers be attached to that? Some interesting and shocking new details have surfaced regarding the cancellation of Daredevil. There has been a lot of talk that the ratings of the show were down and that it was Netflix’s idea to pull the plug on the show.
Well, according to Deadline, the series was actually doing really well and was one of Netflix’s most in-demand shows! It was the fourth most popular show on the streaming service! The three before it are Narcos, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Stranger Things.
It doesn’t make any sense for Netflix to cancel the show with such a high rating. Well, maybe that’s because they may not have cancelled it. According to Collider entertainment reporter Steve Weintraub, it was actually Marvel who pulled the plug on the series.
more info I've been sitting on. Since i can't second source this I'll post this as a "rumor" for now.

As you no doubt know, Netflix’s Daredevil has been cancelled. Typically, the cancellation of a much loved and critically acclaimed show that’s just aired its best season to date would be a shock, but if we’re being completely honest here, the writing had been on the wall ever since Iron Fist and Luke Cage were axed. Still, it’ll surely dismay fans, who’d been so fearful of this particular outcome that they were even campaigning for the show to receive a fourth season long before the news arrived.
Of course, it’s pretty easy to figure out what’s going on between Netflix and Marvel. Disney’s about to launch Disney Plus, their own streaming service which will put them into direct competition with Netflix. This means that the partnership between the two companies would essentially put one arm of the Disney corporation in direct competition against another,...

While the release date of the first preview for Star Wars: Episode IX hasn’t been the subject of quite as much speculation as the equivalent unveiling for Avengers 4, there’ve still been a good amount of rumors and false reports making the rounds online in recent months, with folks putting forth anything from early January to late February as likely times for the initial teaser. According to Steve Weintraub of Collider, however, it might actually be here sooner than we all expected.
Taking to Twitter, he teased that Disney will be bringing us the first footage from both Episode IX and Frozen 2 before Christmas. And while it’s unclear if he actually has a source to back up his claims, he does seem pretty confident that we’ll see something from each film by the end of the month.

After a string of divisive and critically derided films that failed to demonstrate the staying power of the Dceu (Wonder Woman excepted), there’s a lot riding on the success of Aquaman to keep audiences invested in what many assumed would be a world-conquering franchise by now. That being said, if early reactions to the movie’s test screenings are anything to go by, Arthur Curry’s solo debut could be a welcome addition to this struggling cinematic universe that may not reinvent the genre, but may tide the studio over until they come up with something bigger.
