Ashton Kutcher had the opportunity to play Steve Jobs in a film based on the tech mogul’s life. Before his casting, however, Kutcher almost met Jobs himself when he was alive.
But Kutcher couldn’t spend quality time with Jobs in the end, which he soon regretted.

Kutcher was immediately drawn to the film Jobs as soon as he read the script. This was fortunate for the film’s producer, Mark Hulme, who couldn’t imagine anyone else more ideal for the film than Kutcher.
“Since our film covers the early years of Apple, when Jobs was in his 20’s, we needed an actor who could carry not only the youthfulness of Jobs at the time but also the psychological complexity. Because of that, and Ashton’s physical similarities to Jobs, he’s perfect for our film,...

Editor’s note: Kate’s review originally ran during this year’s Sundance Film Festival, but we’re re-running it as the film opens in limited theatrical release this weekend. Apple founder and technology visionary Steve Jobs changed the way the world connects and computes, created one of the world’s most revolutionary companies and recently died, so of course he is now being remembered by way of an unsatisfying biopic that could have been far more creative and inspired than the final product. Director Joshua Michael Stern (best remembered for the completely forgettable Swing Vote) works off a script by newbie scribe Matt Whiteley (a former marketing wonk who was commissioned to write the script by his boss, producer Mark Hulme) that, while well-paced and interesting, also fails to illuminate much about the man and skips over large chunks of his life. As Jobs, Ashton Kutcher does a fine job (sorry, had...

Joshua Michael Stern’s Jobs, the new biopic about the life and accomplishments of Apple founder Steve Jobs, annoyed the heck out of me for a solid twenty to thirty minutes. The film’s first act basically presents Jobs as a modern Jesus Christ, sent here to guide humanity on a greater and more fulfilling path, blessed with knowledge and foresight no mortal man could ever conceive of. He is bathed in halos of effervescent light, shot from a low angle to suggest grandeur and importance, inspires the awe of every single person he comes in contact with, confuses and then uplifts people with his ‘radical’ ideas, and even spins and dances through fields of wheat, a la Terrence Malick.
I consider myself an Apple loyalist, and respect the hell out of Jobs and his contributions to the world, but this was far, far too much. For no human being...

A press release was sent out last week for Ashton Kutcher's Steve Jobs Biopic revealing that the film has started shooting in the original garage where Jobs founded Apple with Steve Wozniak. The movie is being directed by Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote, Neverwas) and the goal is to make the most authentic and accurate film about Jobs that they can. Here's some information on the film from the official press release:
The film covers Jobs from his early years as an impressionable youth and wayward hippie, through his initial successes and infamous ousting, to his storybook return and ultimate triumphs as a man who set out to change the world and did just that.

To say that Ashton Kutcher was an unusual choice for the role of Steve Jobs in Joshua Michael Stern's indie biopic of the Apple creator is probably a fair assessment, but we've had some time to let that sink in, and we've even heard some of the reasoning behind the selection. Sure, Kutcher's better known for his comedic work than he is for dramas, but he does bear some resemblance to Jobs in his younger years, and producer Mark Hulme expressed optimism that Kutcher has what it takes to carry the "psychological complexity" of the role. In another interesting casting development for the film, it looks like Jobs may have found its Woz, and once again, they're going with someone better known for their comedy work than for drama. According to Variety, Josh Gad is working out a deal to play the part of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in...

It may be hard to believe, but Ashton Kutcher is going to play Steve Jobs in the upcoming indie biopic "Jobs." We know the news of Kutcher's casting arrived on the heels of April Fool's day, but it's true and, if you haven't accepted that the co-star of "Dude, Where's My Car" is going to play the late Apple CEO, it's time to move on. That's exactly what director Joshua Michael Stevens ("Swing Vote") has been doing, adding a second cast member in "The Book of Mormon" actor Josh Gad.
Variety reports that Gad will play Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in the biopic, the man who created the Apple I computer and co-created the Apple II. Gad is typically cast in the obnoxious best friend role, and we can't see that trend changing much here as Wozniak, especially since the biopic is going to focus on Jobs' early years and the formation of Apple.

The slate might be thin to begin with, but even a rich selection would still make You Are Here one of the next couple of year’s more promising comedies. I know you might be tired of Zach Galifianakis and Owen Wilson‘s schtick by this point, but roughly five seasons of Mad Men have, as far as I’m concerned, earned Matthew Weiner plenty of right to cast whoever he wants in his first film. And, you know, it’s from the guy who runs Mad Men. That should be a factor, too.
Things are moving forward, and the first “smaller” name has just come aboard with Deadline‘s report, which says Laura Ramsey (Middle Men, Kill the Irishman) will be playing “a young beautiful widow and love interest to the role played by Wilson.” The script — which Weiner wrote before his Mad Men and Sopranos days — follows “a...

If you find yourself, after reading Hulme’s explanation, that the Kutcher casting was a stroke of genius, I have some magic beans that I’d like to sell you. Here it is:...

It's no surprise that Apple fans are hesitant to believe Ashton Kutcher can pull off the role of the company's co-founder Steve Jobs. His boyish good looks and goofy personality lean more toward projects like his past roles in "That 70's Show" and "Dude, Where's My Car?"
But the Jobs biopic producer, Mark Hulme, told The Hollywood Reporter that Kutcher has the "psychological complexity" needed for the role, and it instantly struck a chord in my memory re: Kutcher's psychological thriller, "The Butterfly Effect." So, grab some Kleenex and a big glass of orange juice as we continually travel in time with Kutcher in today's Sick Day Stash.
The film follows Evan Treborn (Kutcher) who discovers in college that when he reads his old journals, he has the ability to travel back in time to change his past. But he soon realizes even the slightest changes lead to major unforeseen consequences in the future.

I can’t deny that I actually laughed out loud upon reading that Ashton Kutcher was set to play Steve Jobs in the upcoming biopic Jobs: Get Inspired. But, alas, the Two and a Half Men star will portray the iconic Apple CEO for director Joshua Michael Stern, which will also be battling Sony’s similar project; Aaron Sorkin is in contention to write that screenplay.
All opinions aside (for now), first-time producer Mark Hulme shed some light on the Kutcher-led project, revealing the film’s focus, what drew them to Kutcher, and what other Apple-related employees will be featured. Hulme spoke with Neowin (via /Film), saying the project will span from 1970 to 2000, covering the founding of Apple as well as its “up and down years.” Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak former CEOs John Scully & Mike Markkula, and early Apple employee Daniel Kottke will all be appearing in the indie picture.

Ashton Kutcher.s film credits, up to this point, include Killers, Spread, What Happens in Vegas and Dude, Where.s My Car? The suggestion that he had what it takes to play Apple genius Steve Jobs in a planned biopic was . well, I won.t go so far as to say .ludicrous,. but I did believe the film.s producers could have made a better choice. A new interview with the forces behind the feature does little to sway my opinion back toward a favorable side. Speaking with Neowin.net, producer Mark Hulme spoke at length about the movie he.s financing, explaining the film.s purpose and attempting to clarify why they thought Kutcher was the right choice to play Jobs on screen. "Since our film covers the early years of Apple, when Jobs was in his 20's, we needed an actor who could carry not only the youthfulness...

Film producer Mark Hulme recently spoke with Neowin about the upcoming "Jobs", the Ashton Kutcher-led indie biopic of late iconic Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
Hulme confirms the movie primarily focuses on the early years of Apple, its founding and the up and down years from 1971 to 2000. The film itself is not based on one particular book though - "Since Apple was a public company and since Steve Jobs was a very visible and much-written-about individual, there is a wealth of source material. We also enlisted the support of primary sources who knew him personally."
Discussions are presently underway with actors to play key supporting roles like Steve Wozniak, John Sculley, Mike Markkula and Daniel Kottke. The film is being shot primarily in Los Angeles and is "not connected with Apple in any way".
Distribution deals are in the works, but no specifics are available other than an intended fourth-quarter release this year.

I'm not sold on Ashton Kutcher playing Steve Jobs in this new biopic being developed. Sure he looks like him, but does he have that commanding presence that Jobs had? I'm not even sure if he's a good enough actor to even fake it. Producer Mark Hulme recently did an interview in which he talked about the film, its focus, what other famous tech innovators will be in the film, and why Kutcher got the job.
The working title of the movie is Jobs: Get Inspired, and it will follow the the ups and downs of Steve Jobs life from the years 1971 to 2000. This is the exact same time frame that was explored in the TV movie Pirates of Silicon Valley. The movie will not be based on any one book like Sony Pictures' adaptation, which will be based on Walter Isaacson’s bestselling biography Steve Jobs. This one...

After hearing that "Punk'd" master and star of such films as Killers and Valentine's Day, Ashton Kutcher, was going to be playing the iconic Apple founder Steve Jobs, there were quite some cries of concern, confusion and even outrage. However, aside from the fact that Kutcher looks like a young Steve Jobs, I'm willing to let Kutcher take a chance at what could be a career defining role and might allow him to turn a new leaf in his career. Now naysayers can begin to judge for themselves with more information on Jobs: Get Inspired as Neowin (via SlashFilm) spoke with producer Mark Hulme who spilled some details. First of all, speaking on Kutcher's involvement in the film, Hulme says: "Since our film covers the early years of Apple, when Jobs was in his 20′s, we needed an actor who could carry not only the youthfulness of Jobs at...

Given the focus of his film on Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, Mark Hulme says that there was no better choice to play the pre-turtleneck era tech icon than the infamously shaggy Ashton Kutcher. "Since our film covers the early years of Apple, when Jobs was in his 20's, we needed an actor who could carry not only the youthfulness of Jobs at the time but also the psychological complexity," Hulme told Neowin.net in a new interview. "Because of that, and Ashton's physical similarities to Jobs, he's perfect for our film." Story: Meet the Man Who Will
