Following “Naatu Naatu”s historic Oscar win for Best Original Song the live performance at Sunday’s performance has come under fire for its exclusion of South Asian choreographers and ensemble dancers.
Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, who recorded the song for the “Rrr” soundtrack, sang onstage alongside two lead dancers in place of stars Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. The telecast recreated the scene from the film in which their characters, Ram and Bheem, face off against a large party of white Brits using the power of Telugu dance.
Critics pointed out that the performance was choreographed by “So You Think You Can Dance” duo Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo, neither of whom are of Indian descent. Nor did the ensemble prominently feature dancers of South Asian descent, a missed opportunity for wider representation, critics said.
The Academy did not comment further on the backlash. In an interview with AMPAS’ magazine A.

Rihanna just reminded fans, once again, that she absolutely commands the stage. The 35-year-old singer performed her Oscar-nominated single "Lift Me Up" from the "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" soundtrack during the March 12 ceremony. Sparkling in a black and crystal top with trousers and long latex gloves, the performer slowly rose up - as the song suggests - on a platform in the center of the Dolby Theatre stage, backed by gospel singers and a live orchestra.
As the pregnant singer concluded the song, the cameras cut to her partner, A$AP Rocky, in the audience, who raised his Champagne glass in a toast.
Rihanna was up for best original song against Sofia Carson ("Applause" from "Tell It Like a Woman"), Lady Gaga ("Hold My Hand" from "Top Gun: Maverick"), Ryan Lott, David Byrne, and Mitski ("This Is a Life" from "Everything Everywhere All at Once"), and Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava...

Tom Cruise may have been the man who saved Hollywood’s ass, according to Steven Spielberg, but the Top Gun: Maverick star wasn’t in the Dolby Theatre tonight to save the Academy Awards.
Turned out that while Cruise was missed, as was Avatar kingpin James Cameron, their star power wasn’t necessary to fuel one of the more watchable if not conventional Oscars of the 21st century. In that sense, this was an Academy Awards with few surprises where almost everyone stuck to the script.

Without question, the greatest movie scene of 2022 was the musical number "Naatu Naatu" from S.S. Rajamouli's Telugu-language epic "Rrr." Since the day I saw it back in early April 2022, not a week goes by that I don't fire up that song on Apple Music or just watch the scene again on YouTube. It is not just an earworm that plays on a loop in my head. It is not just a feat of movie musical choreography and cinematography. It is a perfect storytelling song and sequence that perfectly captures the film's anti-colonialist themes.
When awards season came around, all of us "Rrr" fans not just crossed our fingers for "Naatu Naatu" to actually get nominated and win the Oscar (which it did). We all wanted to see that number performed live at the Oscars, as is customary with the Best Original Song nominees. Lucky for us, it happened! Of course,...

Lady Gaga is in the house - and she brought it down with an emotional performance of her best-original-song-nominated track, "Hold My Hand," at the 2023 Oscars on Sunday night. Lady Gaga performed a stripped down version of her song “Hold My Hand,” which was nominated in the Best Original Song category for the film “Top Gun: Maverick” going into Sunday’s Academy Awards.
The “House of Gucci” actress’ performance was not confirmed until the day of the ceremony after reports that she would not be attending or performing.

Gaga graced the red carpet in a full face of makeup — including red lipstick — and a black gown, but she changed into a black T-shirt and jeans with holes in the knees and removed her makeup to belt the power ballad.
Gaga is currently filming for “Joker 2: Folie à Deux,” in which she is starring opposite Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix as Harley Quinn. The “Joker” sequel will also call upon her vocal chops: It is set to be a musical and release Oct. 4, 2024.

“Naatu Naatu” brought the Sunday night fever to the 2023 Oscars.
Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, in traditional Indian-styled garments, gave a lively performance of the Oscar-nominated song at the Dolby Theatre.
Several background dancers were energetic onstage, displaying intense choreography and killer footwork that was applauded by the audience. Male dancers used suspenders as props, while female dancers twirled in bright dresses.
The Telugu-language “Naatu Naatu” is from the Indian action drama Rrr. The track is nominated for best original song, the first from an Indian production to be nominated for an Oscar. M.M. The other nominees for best original song at the 2023 Oscars include Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which she co-wrote with Tems, Ryan Coogler and Ludwig Göransson; Diane Warren’s “Applause” from Tell It Like a Woman...

Tom Cruise may not have attended the 2023 Oscars, but Lady Gaga represented his film Top Gun: Maverick in a memorable way by performing the soundtrack song — and Best Original Song nominee — “Hold My Hand.”
Gaga needed no introduction for her Oscars performance. The program cut to her already on stage, where she recalled writing the “deeply personal” song in the basement of her studio about how we all need heroes sometimes. Forever committed to the bit, the artist — who was previously seen in the audience in a gown and a full face of makeup — dressed down into black jeans and a black t-shirt for the performance, and completely took off her makeup. It matched the stark beginning of “Hold My Hand,” where Gaga sang a cappella before the track built to a rapturous end.
