Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
There’s an uneasy tension in Amityville in the Hood (2021) between intentional parody and uncomfortable racism. How much of the film’s stereotypical depiction of Compton, which includes gangs, gun violence, drugs, and sex work, is making fun of the conventions of Hollywood films? Or is this just lazy screenwriting and uninspired scenarios?
Let’s give writer/director Dustin Ferguson the benefit of a doubt and go with the former. Of the three titles he’s made in the Amityville “franchise,” In the Hood is by far the most self-aware. There are even a few moments that play like genuine (read: intentional) comedy!
To be clear, there are still plenty of hiccups here. Like his other films in the “franchise,” Ferguson is...

Despite the name, Cocaine Cougar is not about the women down at the corner bar. It’s another microbudget attempt to cash in on Cocaine Bear, but unlike Cocaine Shark, this one actually involves cocaine. On the other hand, there is no such thing as a black cougar. But I suppose cocaine panther didn’t have the same ring to it.
After a title card tell us that this is based on true events and several minutes of the camera prowling through the woods we get several minutes of credits intercut with stock footage of a lab where animals are being experimented on. This normally wouldn’t matter that much, except Cocaine Cougar runs for fifty minutes including credits so by the time we’re told a black cougar has escaped from the lab and...

Director Dustin Ferguson’s remake of Jack Hill’s 1967 cult classic horror movie Spider Baby has wrapped principal photography in L.A. Says Ferguson:
We’ve reached an exhilarating milestone with the completion of the ‘Spider Baby’ remake, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have worked with an extraordinary ensemble of genre stars such as Robert Mukes, Beverly Washburn, Brinke Stevens, and Ron Chaney. Their immense talent and commitment have breathed new life into this iconic story, infusing it with a fresh and captivating energy. I can hardly wait for audiences to experience the chilling world we’ve created when ‘Spider Baby’ premieres.
The film, from production company Scs Entertainment, tells of a pair of greedy relatives that try to repossess the Merrye Estate. But the inbred children protect their home and bloodline at all costs.

"A new strain of evil." Get it, get it? Wild Eye Releasing has debuted an official trailer for Amityville in the Hood, another ridiculous B-movie creation from filmmaker Dustin Ferguson. He's kind of like Asylum, but not even that good. Another Amityville offering now that the rights are in public domain and anyone can use them to make any bad horror movie. But it might be the best?. An Eastside gang uses the Amityville property to grow marijuana when they are attacked by a rival gang and their drugs stolen. Soon, it's unleashed on the Westside streets of Compton, where anyone who smokes it suffers one Killer buzz. Oh lord. The film's cast includes Dustin Ferguson, Jennifer Nangle, John R. Walker, Thom Michael Mulligan, Allie Perez, Pat Kusnadi, Erik Anthony Russo, and Esau McKnight. A haunted marijuana strain? Okay fine, points for creativity. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Dustin...

I’m not going to lie, I had absolutely no idea this film even existed, or was part of an unofficial offshoot of the Zombi series first started by Lucio Fulci. That film was an unofficial sequel to George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead and had its own sequel, Zombi 3 some years later. And whilst the Italians released some unrelated films as Zombi 4 and 5, it would seem John (Sleepaway Camp superfan) Klyza’s Retrosploitation label has put out not one, not two, but Four “Zombi” films prior to this, which is part Eight of their series… Like I said, I had zero idea this film was even a thing until...

As if knowing it existed wasn’t enough, we now have our first look at the absolutely bonkers B-movie, Angry Asian Murder Hornets, in its first trailer that aims to ensure that 2020 couldn’t get any weirder.
Angry Asian Murder Hornets tells the story of a Californian anthropologist who is desperately attempting to find a way to fight back an invasion of mutated, ridiculously massive murder hornets attacking the population. If it sounds completely wacky, that’s because it absolutely is completely wacky. And as you can tell by the trailer, viewers can expect nothing less than the goofiest, most asinine film since Sharknado – which may very well sound like an exceptionally fun time for those with a love of campy, outrageous B-movies.
The film is nothing if not timely, releasing not long after the very real Asian giant hornet was first spotted in Washington, having migrated somehow from its original home of Asia.

2020 hasn’t been off to the greatest start. With an ongoing pandemic responsible for millions of infections and a quarter million deaths, we really don’t need much else on our plate right now. But that hasn’t stopped one deadly insect from spreading to Washington from its original home of Asia, ensuring that this year only becomes even more stressful.
The Asian giant hornet, known by a far more threatening name of the “murder hornet,” is a species of large flying insects native to Asia. They’re responsible for over 50 human deaths a year in Japan, and they can wipe out a beehive in a staggeringly short period of time while killing upwards of 5 bees per minute. If that doesn’t make you feel a tinge of discomfort, few things probably do.
The species was first spotted in Washington in the final months of 2019, but the hornets are now multiplying in the state,...
