In Scott Schirmer’s film Found, a boy wants to know why his older brother kills people. Marty (Gavin Brown) originally believed horror movies, something he and Steve (Ethan Philbeck) both loved, was the cause. Over time, however, the root of Steve’s evil proves to be more nebulous. There are other important factors when understanding why this young man became a serial killer and why his little brother kept his secret for so long.
Found was a dream come true for Schirmer, who sought out author Todd Rigney after falling in love with his 2004 novel. “There was just this feeling of dread that hung over the entire story,” Schirmer said. And with Rigney as his co-writer, the pair then wrote a rather faithful adaptation of the source material. Like the novel, the film begins with Marty discovering a severed head inside his brother’s bowling bag. Oddly, though, Marty...

When a serial killer is caught one of the questions that is often asked is why didn’t the family realise? For many the answer probably is that they never thought that the person was capable of it, love is blind. In Found though this questions is examined through the eyes of a young boy.
When Marty (Gavin Brown) discovers a human head in his brother’s closet at first he is unsure of what to do. Being a horror fan he watches events unfold with interest, as if it is one of his movies, even checking out the different heads that appear from time to time. As his brother’s psychopathic tendencies escalate though Marty begins to realise...

I have been aware of the existence of this movie for quite some time. I started doing this website, covering independent horror almost exclusively. And, while I love indie movies, most of the reason that was my focus, was because it’s a lot easier to get an indie filmmaker to send you their film for coverage, than it is to get product from the big studios. I have witnessed some remarkable indie horror over the years, but I have seen some pure garbage as well. The most prolific sin of the indie horror industry, is that the main focus is almost always the special effects. And don’t get me wrong, I love some practical effects, but if it’s not sandwiched in-between good photography, effective lighting, and professional performances from your actors, the impact is severely limited. I say this, because I want you to understand why I...

Before I even introduce the concept of Found, please understand that director Scott Schirmer has re-defined the meaning of a “shoe-string” budget. Working with literally no budget, Schirmer and his team were able to put together a feature-length horror film with an estimated $8,000, coming in under Paranormal Activity‘s already astounding $15,000 (estimated). Oren Peli was smart, used his budget to his advantage, and went with the “found footage” method that didn’t require big, expensive cameras, also keeping the story rather grounded in the effects department.
Tackling a straight narrative film like Found is a much more daunting task on such a tight budget, not being able to splurge on visual gore, A-List actors, top-notch CGI, and sprawling settings like a big-budget film. Scott Schirmer evokes the heart of independent filmmaking with his harrowing horror film, but will you be able to ignore the shortcomings of such a small budget?...

In Found, Marty (Gavin Brown), a horror movie-loving, graphic novel-writing suburban kid, discovers the severed heads his brother (Ethan Philbeck) keeps bringing home. Nonplussed at first, Marty soon has his life spiral into the kind of horror film he so dearly loves.
Watching Found can be quite the confusing experience. On the one hand, there’s themes of identity and maturity, with Marty experiencing bullying, sexual awakening, and familial conflict. There’s also a small commentary about the nature of horror movies and how they can desensitize younger audiences (Marty keeps his brother’s severed heads a secret, much like he does his mother’s old love letters from an ex and his father’s rude magazines).
But those qualities are all but made moot by the film’s jarringly inconsistent tone. The acting is stilted and stiff, making for an oddly...
