Promenade, a new film from John Jencks, has begun production in Brighton this week. More on the film below.
We’re hearing rumbles that a new British film is heading our way sooner rather than later from director John Jencks. The Hippopotamus director is helming Promenade, a Brighton set whodunnit, next and the project has just started filming, we hear.
The announcement comes with an ambiguous tagline: “50 Cast, 12 Stories, 1 Plot. No Heroes.” Colour us intrigued.
Here’s a synopsis for the film: In Brighton on the South coast of England, sharpened by the sting of sea spray, and mellowed by numinous light, a tight-knit community of oddballs and heart-felts live together in a tatty old mansion, the Fletcher Apartments. When a golden feather, the priceless antique mascot of the building, unexpectedly disappears, the residents have a mystery to solve. Will they find the talisman that previously bound them together, or will their community,...

Ah, Hartlepool. The town where they hung a monkey many moons ago, and is also the setting for that golden oldie of comic strips, Andy Capp (there’s even a statue of the great man himself). With Looted, we have a film that’s another great ad for the local tourist board, but not much more.
Don’t get me wrong; it’s not that bad, but it’s all just a little bit lacklustre.
Rob (Charley Palmer Rothwell) is a young man with a lot on his mind. He lives at home with his dad, Oswald (Tom Fisher), and is also his full-time carer. Outside of this, he’s in a gang of friends that include Leo (Thomas Turgoose) and Kasia (Morgane Polanski). Their escapades mean that they frequently find themselves on the other side of the law, and all the time Rob has to come up with an...

"Gimme the money. I can kill ya and take it. Or I can just take it. It's your call..." Dark Sky has unveiled a new US trailer for the British thriller Concrete Plans, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Will Jewell. This first premiered at Frightfest in the UK last year, and already opened over there last fall. High in the remote Welsh mountains, five builders are brought in to renovate a sprawling old farmhouse. When their employer tries to cheat them out of a job, this rugged crew of five workmen turn first on him then each other, leading to a bloody confrontation. Concrete Plans stars Goran Bogdan, Kevin Guthrie, Chris Reilly, Amber Rose Revah, Charley Palmer Rothwell, Steve Speirs, and William Thomas. This looks like it gets brutal fast, which it seems is the point of the plot as everything spirals out of control. Here's the official...

In this claustrophobic if unconvincing thriller, an arrogant landowner incurs the wrath of the builders renovating his ancestral home
There’s some really strong acting talent involved in this claustrophobic thriller set in south Wales, including the excellent Steve Speirs, who recently showed what a great comic turn he is as Burbage in Ben Elton’s Upstart Crow. But, however much I wanted to like it, this film never quite gelled: the dialogue and the confrontations seemed forced; some characters looked and sounded like caricatures; and the moment of escalation from tension into open violence was unconvincing.
Kevin Guthrie plays Simon, an arrogant landowner who is refurbishing the ancestral home as part of a colossal tax dodge on the advice of his slippery accountant Richard (James Lance). To do this, he has hired five builders: Bob (Speirs), Jim (Chris Reilly), Dave (William Thomas), Steve (Charley Palmer Rothwell) and Viktor (Goran Bogdan...

An impressive film about a pair of car thieves in the north of England combines social commentary, poignant drama and lyrical cinematography
Petty criminal Rob (Charley Palmer Rothwell) has a busier schedule than most gainfully employed people in this affecting debut feature from director Rene van Pannevis. He and best mate Leo (Thomas Turgoose) steal cars for profit and pleasure, often with Leo’s giggling girlfriend, Kasia, along for the ride.
Life is less of a lark at home, where Rob is the sole carer for his terminally ill father, Oswald (Tom Fisher), a former merchant seaman who has been abandoned to asbestos-related lung disease by his negligent employer. Oswald believes – or perhaps just vainly hopes – that Rob is out looking for work during the days. There’s not much of that about in their small, port-town home.

Looted is a great new British indie that echoes the style and grit of the likes of Shane Meadows and Clio Barnard, and to mark the release (now VOD given latest lockdown measures) we spoke to its two leading stars, Charley Palmer Rothwell, and Thomas Turgoose.
The former talks about how much of himself he put into the role, and just how committed he was to this project. Meanwhile Turgoose talks about how he accessed the character of Leo, and talks about coming through the Shane Meadows school of acting, and how that has set him up in his career (and just how much he misses his This is England co-stars).
The pair also talk about doing accents, lockdown lifestyles, and we ask Charley about his time spent working with Chris Nolan on Dunkirk.
Watch the full interview with both Charley and Thomas below:

Five misfit builders coming together to work on a farmhouse in some remote Welsh mountains don’t seem like the basis for a horror film. But Concrete Plans, a very British movie, is exactly that and although it takes a little while to get there, there is plenty of horror to witness.
The five workers might be a little stereotypical but are the perfect ‘gang’ for this movie. You have the arrogant youngster who is being badly influenced by an older bigoted guy. The Ukrainian guy who just wants to work but is constantly antagonised by that pair. While we have the older guy who just wants to get on with work but will defend any prejudices he sees. "I'm not gonna be around for much longer..." "Don't say that." Bulldog Film Distribution from the UK has released an official trailer for an indie British crime thriller titled Looted, which originally premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival late last year. Looted is directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Rene van Pannevis, whose short film Jacked won the BIFA in 2016. The film is a semi-autobiographical account of Rene's own experiences with his father - and living on the fringes of a criminal group as a young man. Rob lives his life at 100mph, carefully balancing carjacking schemes and joyrides and caring for his dying father. But one risky job could bring it all crashing down. The film stars Charley Palmer Rothwell as Rob, with Thomas Turgoose, Morgane Polanski, Anders Hayward, Stephen Uppal, and Tom Fisher. This seems like a well-made, worthwhile UK film with some excellent performances leading the way.

Outside the big movies that everyone talks about and promotes, I try to go into as many horror movies as possible with knowing very little about them. So a quick look on IMDb before I viewed Boo! told me that it wasn’t in fact a comedy that I believed it was based on the title and poster I had seen.
It is about as far away from comedy as a horror could be to be honest, with a tone that felt a lot more like recent box office and critic hit, Hereditary. This story also centres on a dysfunctional family that includes mother, father, daughter and son and while I write this I see that it has a few more similarities with Hereditary! In Boo! this...

Tagline: "You've Been Chosen." Boo! is an upcoming horror movie from director Luke Jaden. This is a Midland Entertainment release, which was recently picked up by Vertical Entertainment for North American distribution. In the film, a struggling family presses their luck, when a Halloween game is left at their doorstep. However, if they do not play, a curse will be placed upon them. Boo! will be released later this month, in at least ten theatres, across several Us cities. And, Boo! at Rue Morgue has just released the film's most recent clip, which we will self-title "Bloody Tooth." Finally, Boo! stars: Aurora Perrinea, Rob Zabrecky (A Ghost Story), Jaden Piner, Jill Marie Jones and Charley Palmer Rothwell. The full Boo! clip is below. The short clip shows a family man, in an old library. A tome drops in and its demands an "eye for an eye" and a "tooth for a tooth.

Close, directed by Vicky Jewson, is one of latest slug action thrillers from Netflix. Jewson’s film stars Noomi Rapace as counter-terrorism expert Sam who, after a brutal job, decides to scale back and begin working as a bodyguard for young naive heiress Zoe played by Sophie Nélisse. Things go sideways after an attempted kidnapping and the two go on the run in a foreign country with no allies, trying to survive.
Close is about as generic and predictable as any direct-to-video that you’ll come across in your local supermarket bargain bin. Echoing that of extravagant low-budget and low-brow ’90s action films, the narrative on offer is still somehow saturated to...

"Let's get one thing straight - I no longer work for you. From now on, you do as I say." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for a gritty action film titled Close, which will be premiering on Netflix in just a few weeks. Described as an "adrenaline-pumping action thriller", written and directed by Vicky Jewson, the film is about a bodyguard assigned to protect a young woman who is handed the keys to her father's business. When things go wrong and they end up kidnapped, they both must learn to fight back and escape in order to make it home alive. Noomi Rapace stars as Sam, with a cast including Sophie Nélisse, Indira Varma, Eoin Macken, Charley Palmer Rothwell, Akin Gazi, Huw Parmenter, and George Georgiou. This looks like an intense action flick, but also looks cliche with all the usual tropes. Still might be worth a watch.

Stars: Jessie Buckley, Johnny Flynn, Geraldine James, Trystan Gravelle, Emily Taaffe, Charley Palmer Rothwell, Hattie Gotobed, Shannon Tarbet, Olwen Fouere, Tim Woodward, Oliver Maltman, Barry Aird | Written and Directed by Michael Pearce
This Jersey-set thriller from writer-director Michael Pearce is an accomplished feature debut. Beast packs a lot into its lean running time; and while it’s dotted with clichés, and some scenes fall flat, it is intelligent and atmospheric and it grips until the end.
Twenty-something Moll (Jessie Buckley) feels trapped in her middle-class home, which she shares with her dementia-suffering father and overbearing mother (Geraldine James). Moll was expelled from school as a young teenager and spent the rest of her formative years being home-schooled. Her mother never forgave her.
One night, Moll escapes her dismal birthday party and goes out clubbing. She’s rescued from a sleazebag by a wiry stranger, Pascal (Johnny Flynn). He’s a rule-breaker and a heartbreaker.

"Maybe I've been to soft on you." Film4 has unveiled an official trailer for the psychological mystery-thriller film titled Beast, which has been playing at major film festivals including Toronto, London, and Sundance this year. The title Beast is a reference to a true-life notorious criminal case known as "the Beast of Jersey", which is why the title of the French poster below is Jersey Affair. Jessie Buckley plays a troubled woman living in an isolated community, who finds herself pulled between the control of her oppressive family and the allure of a secretive outsider suspected of a series of brutal murders. Johnny Flynn stars as the creepy guy, and Geraldine James as her mother, with a full cast including Charley Palmer Rothwell, Hattie Gotobed, Shannon Tarbet, Trystan Gravelle, Emily Taaffe, Olwen Fouere, and Tim Woodward. Based on the buzz, this is definitely a film you should see without knowing...

"You have the full weight of the world on your shoulders." Focus Features has debuted the second trailer for Joe Wright's Darkest Hour, the second film this year about Winston Churchill (the other one is called Churchill starring Brian Cox). This film already played at the Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals to some rave reviews, especially for the lead performance by Gary Oldman under heavy prosthetic as Winston Churchill. The focus in this film is on Churchill's first few days as Prime Minister, deciding whether or not to agree to a peace treaty with Nazi Germany or fight back and rally the troops waiting in Dunkirk. The cast includes Lily James, Ben Mendelsohn, Stephen Dillane, Kristin Scott Thomas, Charley Palmer Rothwell, Ronald Pickup, Nicholas Jones, Hannah Steele, and Jeremy Child. This is a slick trailer that ratchets up the intensity and shows how powerful Oldman is as Churchill.

"You cannot reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth!" Focus Features has unveiled the first trailer for Joe Wright's Darkest Hour, the second film this year about Winston Churchill (the other one is called Churchill starring Brian Cox). This is the film that stars the very talented Gary Oldman under heavy prosthetic as Winston Churchill, giving a powerful, commanding cigar-chomping performance. The focus in this film is on Churchill's first few days as Prime Minister, deciding whether or not to agree to a peace treaty with Nazi Germany or fight back and rally the troops. The cast includes Lily James, Ben Mendelsohn, Stephen Dillane, Kristin Scott Thomas, Charley Palmer Rothwell, Ronald Pickup, Nicholas Jones, Hannah Steele, Richard Lumsden, and Jeremy Child. This looks much, much better than the other Churchill film. And hopefully this will get Oldman an Oscar nomination - it definitely seems possible.

After shedding new light on X-Men: Dark Phoenix and its outgoing South Korean singer/actor Rain, Omega Underground has now shifted the spotlight over to another of Fox’s 2018 tentpoles, Deadpool 2.
Specifically, the outlet has uncovered a handful of alleged audition tapes for David Leitch’s sequel – audition tapes that point to the addition of a brand new mutant. Up until now, Deadpool 2 has welcomed Zazie Beetz and Josh Brolin on board to play Domino and Cable, respectively, but it seems the 2018 follow-up still has room in its ranks for one last-minute casting coup before filming kicks off in Vancouver later this month.
Per Omega Underground, it’s now been claimed that Killian Scott and British actor Charley Palmer Rothwell are both testing for the role of “Mike.” Exactly who “Mike” is and how he factors into Deadpool 2 is up for question, but it’s worth keeping...

"I know what I'm gunna do then: I'm gunna knock him spark out, and be back in here for lunch." Lionsgate UK has released an official trailer for My Name Is Lenny, telling the life story of famous bare-knuckle fighter Lenny McLean, who was the first to earn the iconic nickname "the Guv'nor". Josh Helman (seen in X-Men: Apocalypse, Mad Max: Fury Road, Jack Reacher) plays McLean, and the cast includes Chanel Cresswell, Nick Moran, John Hurt, Michael Bisping, Charley Palmer Rothwell, George Russo, and Rita Tushingham. This looks like an entertaining "sports" movie, following in the footsteps of films like Bronson and Snatch. It might also play well as a double feature with Chuck. This trailer is worth a look. Every year now we are inundated with superhero films. Marvel and DC are doing battle tor movie supremacy, and it is arguable that Marvel are well ahead in the battle. Netflix have released a new film that may not really compete with those two huge companies, but iBoy is an interesting take on the superhero genre that is well worth checking out.
Tom (Bill Milner) is just an average boy, until he gets shot in the head, resulting in the phone he was using at the time fragmenting and embedding in his head. When he wakes up, he finds himself able to connect to electronic gadgets, and even the ability to control them. Giving him the perfect set of tools to seek revenge on...

There’s no getting around the latest Netflix original’s monumentally dumb premise. A British teenager has an accident that causes shards of his smartphone to become lodged in his brain. This grants him iPhone superpowers, leading him to battle crime as the heroic vigilante iBoy.
Okay, okay, stop giggling. Yes, it’s stupid. Yes, it doesn’t make sense. And yes, ‘iBoy’ is a godawful superhero name. But consider how ridiculous it is for a teenage boy to be bitten by a radioactive spider and getting spider superpowers, or four pet turtles being splashed by mutagenic goo and becoming ninjas, or a scientist being irradiated and turning into a big angry green man or… Well you get the picture. My point is that superhero origin stories are usually pretty silly and you shouldn’t be so quick to judge iBoy, an unexpectedly compelling and contemporary take on the classical superhero template.
