Mark Lazarus will assume oversight of all of NBCUniversal’s entertainment TV operations as part of a massive company-wide restructuring.
Lazarus is now in charge of Peacock, NBCU’s streaming service that became available to Comcast subscribers last month. Matt Strauss will continue to lead the day-to-day operations as general manager. Lazarus, who has run NBC’s sports operations since 2011, maintains his oversight of NBC Sports and the company’s stations and cable businesses, while adding broadcast and cable production operations.
The sweeping changes mark the first major moves under newly-installed NBCU CEO Jeff Shell, who took over in January. During Comcast’s earnings call last week, Shell hinted that potential changes would be coming, describing the company as not being “right sized” for the current environment, given economic havoc brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

USA has given a series order to “Treadstone,” a TV spinoff of Universal’s “Bourne” film franchise that starred Matt Damon.
“Treadstone,” will explores the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Treadstone — a covert operation that uses behavior modification protocol to turn its agents into nearly unstoppable superhuman assassins. “Treadstone” was one of the four pilots USA ordered in April, but decided to pick it up straight-to-series.
The first season, which begins production in 2019, follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions.

USA Network has ordered the drama “Treadstone” straight to series, Variety has learned.
The series, which was originally ordered to pilot back in April, centers on the fictional CIA black ops program Operation Treadstone, which was the program that created superspy Jason Bourne. The covert program uses behavior modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly superhuman assassins. The first season follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions. The series will go into production in 2019.
“As the #1 cable entertainment network for the past 12 years, USA Network is delivering a dynamic lineup of big, bold programming – and what could be bigger and bolder than the Treadstone mythology?” said Chris McCumber, president of entertainment networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.
“Treadstone” is produced by Universal Cable Productions. The series is written and executive produced by Tim Kring. Ramin Bahrani will direct the pilot and also serve as an executive producer.

USA Network has given a straight-to-series order to drama Treadstone, an offshoot from the Bourne franchise, from Heroes creator Tim Kring and Universal Cable Productions.
Treadstone was originally announced as a pilot order on USA’s 2018 slate in April but will now bypass the pilot stage and go straight to series. I hear the decision stems in large part from an international distribution deal Ucp is negotiating with Amazon. In a similar fashion, Ucp’s Syfy’s pilot Nightflyers went directly to series when Netflix took international distribution under its co-licensing model.
I hear new Amazon Studios president Jennifer Salke was instrumental in starting the conversations on Treadstone as she had known the project since its inception and was in on the original pitch in her previous role as president of NBC Entertainment. Because of its Bourne ties, the project has worldwide appeal and name recognition. It also comes from a proven TV creator/showrunner,...

Fox has slated WWE’s SmackDown Live on Friday nights starting in October 2019, kicking off a five-year deal between the broadcast network and the pro wrestling circuit.
Beginning October 4, 2019, Fox will air a weekly, two-hour, live event 52 weeks a year.
USA Network, meanwhile, which used to air SmackDown, said it is renewing Monday Night Raw, a high-rated mainstay that debuted on the network in 1993. The re-up is also for five years.
Sources familiar with the talks said USA had the contractual right of first refusal for both nights of wrestling. SmackDown had been airing on the network only since January 2016, so it proved more appealing to focus on Raw as a single night. Both franchises remain durable in the ratings, despite all of the headwinds for programming of late, with Raw averaging 3.56 million live-plus-seven-day total viewers and SmackDown 2.89 million.
SmackDown‘s move, which was signaled a few weeks ago, fills an important gap for Fox.

The WWE made its deal with Fox Sports for “SmackDown” official on Tuesday, while renewing its longstanding partnership with USA Network for “Monday Night Raw.”
Both agreements are for five years. “Smackdown” will air Friday nights on Fox beginning Oct. 4, 2019 and remain two hours in length.
“WWE and Fox are a perfect match,” said Vince McMahon, WWE chairman & CEO. “Moving ‘SmackDown Live’ to broadcast TV and having the ability to leverage Fox’s extensive portfolio of world-class sporting events will expand the reach of our flagship programming.”

USA Network has ordered four drama pilots. One is a spinoff of the “Bourne” movies, while another stars Denis Leary — and that’s just (literally) the half of it.
“Treadstone,” which hails from a “Bourne” franchise producer, “explores the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Treadstone — a covert operation that uses behavior modification protocol to turn its agents into nearly unstoppable superhuman assassins,” per USA.
Leary’s “Erase” tells the story of Donal O’Neal, a “dirty ex-cop who decides to do the right thing and bring down his complicit superior officers,” according to the cable channel’s logline. “But his best weapon in this battle — a photographic memory — is suddenly compromised by symptoms of early-onset Alzheimer’s.”

“As the No. 1 cable entertainment network for a record 12 years in a row, USA Network delivers unmatched scale and momentum with a broad, diverse slate of programming,” said Chris McCumber, president, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “These new pilots add to our dynamic scripted pipeline with the big auspices, top creative talent and bold characters that have become USA’s signature.”
“Now more than ever, premium video content is proving to work the hardest for our marketing partners in helping them reach their business objectives,” said Mark Marshall, executive vice president, Entertainment Advertising Sales, NBCUniversal. “Having new, high quality scripted fare allows us to have the most meaningful conversations with advertisers about how USA can be a powerful part of their ad campaigns.”

“Briarpatch”

What begins as a search for a killer turns into an all-consuming fight to bring the corrupt hometown Allegra thought she left behind to its knees. Written for television by Andy Greenwald, who will executive produce along with “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail through his production company Esmail Corp and Anonymous Content’s Chad Hamilton, “Briarpatch” celebrates the beloved genre that Thomas’ book represents — a unique blend of crime, thriller, mystery, and pulp fiction – while updating his electrifying sense of fun, danger and place for a new generation. Yann Demange will direct and serve as executive producer. “Briarpatch” is a co-production of Universal Cable Productions and Paramount Television.

It’s a sad day for fans of the ol’ ultraviolence, as Syfy’s “Blood Drive,” a gleefully disturbing mash-up of horror and sci-fi tropes, will not be returning for a second season. In a heartfelt letter to fans yesterday, creator James Roland described how much making the show meant to him — and how disappointed he was that it had been canceled.
“I got to make a show that I love so much I actually watch episodes as a fan (don’t tell anyone it makes me sound like a douchebag). The past two years are maybe the best of my life, creatively and personally. But none of that prepared me for how incredible it was seeing the show connect with you all on a deep level,” Roland wrote.

Syfy is getting into the lucrative comic book television game with Krypton, a prequel to the Superman mythology which explores the life of the Man of Steel’s grandfather on the infamously doomed planet. We still don’t know too much about the project – a recent leaked trailer popped up online for a few days before disappearing – but our interest is already piqued.
With the news that the network has requested a full season of the show on the back of the pilot, ComicBook.com spoke to Chris McCumber, President of Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, about the new series. McCumber remained tight-lipped, as expected, but he did reveal that the show would “definitely contain other DC comics characters in the Krypton world” and that Syfy has had “had plenty of talks with Warner Bros.” about the use of these characters.

The network is also developing an adaptation of the George R.R. Martin novella “Nightflyers,” and, as previously announced, has partnered with Blumhouse Television to develop a new TV chapter of the feature franchise “The Purge” (which will also air on USA Network).
To emphasize the changes, the network unveiled a new logo and look across its platforms. The name hasn’t changed (although that was discussed — including a return to the original Sci-Fi moniker), but now it’s in all-caps: Syfy.

I was actually late to The Expanse party. I just finished watching the first season, and I'm totally loving the series! If you aren't watching it yet, you really need to be. At least 2016 has been a good 12 months for someone. USA is on track to top ad-supported cable entertainment networks for an 11th consecutive year — that’s a new Nielsen record for any channel. (Of course, last year’s decade-long claim was the reigning record.) “Colony,” “Queen of the South,” “Shooter,” “Mr. Robot,” “Suits,” “Chrisley Knows Best” “WWE Monday Night Raw” and “WWE SmackDown Live” led the way, delivering an average of 1.68 million total viewers every Monday-Sunday throughout the year. “We are so proud to end 2016 at No. 1 for the 11th straight year,” said Chris McCumber, president, entertainment networks for...

It is a show that has defied the odds. In a spate of TV show adaptations of feature films – which included Limitless on CBS – 12 Monkeys has managed to survive and thrive, despite early scepticism of its viability. That scepticism has been surely silenced now, as Syfy has handed the show a third season order, comprising of 10 episodes.
The series is based upon the 1995 movie of the same name – directed by Terry Gilliam – and centres on Cole (Aaron Stanford). He is a time traveller from a future decimated by disease, and he has been sent back in time to prevent it happening. In the show, he is helped by Dr. Railly (Amanda Schull), and together, they find themselves needing to uncover and defeat the shadowy, ancient organization known as the Army Of The 12 Monkeys. As they fight to save the future, they come to realize that their actions have consequences for all of history,...

There isn't even time travel involved with this fantastic news.
12 Monkeys has been renewed for a third season, as first reported by EW.
Hailing from executive producers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, 12 Monkeys Season 2 is in the middle of one of the most creatively viable and incredibly emotional arcs its ever had.
With only two episodes remaining this season, it's wonderful of Syfy to give fans the freedom to really sit back and enjoy what lies ahead.
“Syfy and Ucp have been incredible creative partners, and I’m thrilled that we are going to tell the next — even more twisty and emotional — chapter of this time travel adventure,” Matalas told EW.
This season, a lot of the action has taken place in the future, a future in which protaganists and would-be love interests James Cole (Aaron Standford) and Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull) have been distant and at odds.

The "Psych" series finale, titled "The Break-Up," was anything but a break-up for fans. Instead, it was a beautiful way to send off the beloved Sbpd characters -- Lassiter running his own department (and destroying Shawn's confessional DVD), Shawn proposing to Juliet and, of course, Shawn and Gus staying together.
Star Dule Hill tells Zap2it that it really couldn't have ended any other way. "You've been on the journey with these two brothers over eight season and to have them end up in two separate places would have been disheartening, not only for the cast but also the 'Psych'-Os, the fans out there."

USA has officially renewed “Necessary Roughness,” its hour-long scripted drama starring Callie Thorne as a psychotherapist for the fictional New York Hawks football team, for a 10-episode third season, the network announced Jan. 7. The series is cast by Donna Rosenstein and Marlo Tiede. The second season of “Necessary Roughness” resumes Jan. 23. “ ‘Necessary Roughness’ is an important page in our network playbook,” USA Co-Presidents Jeff Wachtel and Chris McCumber said in a joint statement. “With a standout team of actors and writers playing at the top of their game, the upcoming seasons promise to deliver high-impact and creative storytelling.” Comedy Central announced that it has picked up two more seasons of its hit half-hour comedy series “Workaholics,” co-created by and starring Blake Anderson, Adam Devine, and Anders Holm as three slacker roommates who work together at a telemarketing company—usually under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Seasons 4 and 5 will each air 13 episodes.

USA has picked up a third season of "Necessary Roughness," but it won't be as long as the first two.
The cable channel ordered 10 episodes of the series starring Callie Thorne, down from 16 episodes this season and 12 in Season 1. The pickup also means that all of USA's summer series -- "Burn Notice," "Covert Affairs," "Royal Pains," "Suits" and "White Collar" were previously picked up -- will be back in 2013.

"Necessary Roughness" averaged about 2.7 million viewers in its summer run. It returns Jan. 23 with five episodes to conclude Season 2.

It hasn’t even had a chance to air its seventh season, yet already Psych is being given the gift of renewal. This would normally be great news for a series, especially one airing on a cable TV network, but I can’t help but feel this is kind of a bitter sweet story. Psych has been USA Networks longest running scripted series, and for good reason. The show is practically unique as a crime/mystery comedy series and has managed to survive this long. It really is a good show and the higher ups at USA would agree; yet when they announced the renewal it was for a shortened season of only eight episodes instead of the usual 16.
Entertainment Weekly reported USA co-presidents Chris McCumber and Jeff Wachtel had said in a statement: “Psych is one of those rarities – a show that continues to grow its fan base season after season,...

Psych, which is USA’s longest running scripted series, will premiere it’s seventh season Feb. 27.
