The Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons-starring sci-fi series Night Sky has been canceled by Amazon’s Prime Video after just one season. As reported by Deadline, the cancelation comes just a month and a half after the eight-episode first season debuted on the streamer. Despite positive reviews from critics, the series did not reach a high enough viewership to justify its expensive budget. Created by Holden Miller and Daniel C. Connolly, Night Sky revolves around married couple Franklin (Simmons) and Irene York (Spacek), who discover a portal in their backyard that leads to a deserted planet. However, their carefully guarded secret is upended when an enigmatic young man (Chai Hansen) enters the scene, revealing that the portal is much more than the Yorks ever imagined. In addition to Spacek and Simmons, the show also starred Kiah McKirnan, Beth Lacke, Julieta Zylberberg, Rocío Hernández, Stephen Louis Grush, Sonya Walger, Angus O’Brian,...

Amazon Prime Video has canceled “Night Sky,” its science-fiction series starring Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons. Amazon Studios and Legendary Television co-produced the series’ first season.
The decision to not move forward with another installment comes about six weeks after the first season premiered all eight of its episodes on the streamer May 20.
“Night Sky” follows Irene (Spacek) and Franklin (Simmons), who once stumbled upon a portal to an alien planet. The couple’s fairly quiet life together is upended when new parties attempt to interrogate them about the mysterious gateway and the world beyond it.
Notably, Amazon Prime Video leaned into the science-fiction premise of the series by launching a marketing strategy involving beaming the first episode of “Night Sky” into outer space, avoiding satellites that would send the broadcast back to Earth. The company described the decision to send “Night Sky” to the night sky as “the farthest...

Exclusive: Amazon’s Prime Video is not proceeding with a second season of its sci-fi series Night Sky, starring Oscar winners Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons. The news comes a month and a half after all eight Season 1 episodes of the drama, co-produced by Amazon Studios and Legendary Television, were released May 20.
Launching to largely positive reviews, the series did not make a significant viewership impact while carrying sizable costs tied to its sci-fi content. But regardless of the cancellation, Night Sky already has secured its place in TV history.
Prime Video, in conjunction with Amazon Web Services, Ses, and Intelsat, beamed the show’s first episode into outer space, marking the farthest distance from earth that a TV series has been distributed and making Prime Video the first streamer to distribute its content directly into space.

Salt of the earth Midwesterners Irene and Franklin York (Oscar winners Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons) believe they’re in the twilight of their half-century marriage. So, maybe, they’re not entirely Mr. and Mrs. Typical, and their lives hew closer to “The Twilight Zone.” Some nights, they slip away from the dinner dishes and TV to their backyard shed. Once there, they teleport to a mysterious chamber with a stunning view of what is perhaps a distant, empty but awe-inducing planet-scape. It’s magical, but the Yorks have yet to crack the code of what this incredible interstellar overlook means.
“Night Sky,” created by Holden Miller, gets off to a slow yet intimate start. We dive into the joys and sorrows of Spacek’s sickly former English teacher and her retired carpenter husband. We learn how the Yorks met, married and had an only son who fathered an only daughter.

This review is spoiler-free for Night Sky.
Several characters in Prime Video’s Night Sky awaken to the idea that something is missing in their lives, something to make them feel special. Even the elderly couple Franklin (Jk Simmons) and Irene (Sissy Spacek) who have kept secret a portal to another planet under their shed struggle to glean its purpose. The show, then, has the same thematic dilemma of finding its hook beyond the Lost-like puzzle box narrative: why should we care about the stranger who shows up in the couple’s lives (Chai Hansen) and what effect he has on them?
Most of the characters in Night Sky have a lot of inertia to overcome, and as a result, the first few episodes take awhile to gain momentum. A tragedy in Frank and Irene’s past has contributed to their reclusiveness and declining health through sheer inactivity. The couple...

The first episode of “Night Sky” offers nearly enough precision in its pathos to exist unto itself. Franklin (J.K. Simmons) and Irene York (Sissy Spacek) are an aging couple living just outside the (fictional) small town of Farnsworth, Il. Irene, a retired English teacher, isn’t letting her declining health affect her good humor, and Franklin enjoys taking care of her, Over their many years together, he’s adjusted his bad habits to better her life. “Son of a swine herd” are the first words out of Franklin’s mouth, as he habitually checks his language to appease his wife’s distaste for swearing. She still corrects his grammar. He smiles when she does.
Their loving rapport extends to what at first appears a simple late-night request from Irene: Tonight, she wants to “see the stars.” Franklin, while less eager, agrees, and helps Irene get situated in her wheelchair, guides her outside,...

Perhaps it’s unsurprising that Amazon is all in on clunky technological metaphors.
Following in the wake of 2020’s “Tales From the Loop,” about people living near a futuristic physics lab, and this year’s “Outer Range,” about a void or portal appearing on a rancher’s property, comes “Night Sky,” about a couple who possess a chamber capable of taking them to another planet. While it’s likely not useful to see all of Amazon Prime Video’s television properties as extensions of company founder Jeff Bezos’ will, there’s something very tidy at work here — the man does, after all, undertake short space voyages, making the fact that his company produces television about the mysteries and wonder of the cosmos feel marginally more revealing or intriguing.
The show could use the help. Sissy Spacek and J. K. Simmons, playing a married couple whose quotidian rural life helps conceal...

It’s hard to go wrong when you cast a pair of Oscar winners in what Night Sky showrunner Daniel C. Connolly calls “a hopeful combination of enduring love story and magical adventure.” The series centers on Irene and Franklin York (Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons), a retired Midwestern couple with a big secret: There’s a space “chamber” in their yard that can transport them to a distant planet. (Credit: Prime Video) But the discovery of an injured young man (Chai Hansen) outside the chamber alters their quiet lives. Also set to create another wrinkle in time for the couple: the appearance of an Argentinian mother (Julieta Zylberberg) and daughter (Rocio Hernández) with their own chamber. Still, this entertaining flight of fancy remains grounded by its stars. Says Connolly, “There’s a relatability to this couple that’s powerful.” Night Sky, Original Series Premiere, Friday, May 20, Prime Video...

"You ready to make history?" "You say that every time." Amazon has revealed the first official trailer for a fascinating sci-fi series called Night Sky, arriving on Prime Video later in May this summer. This looks pretty damn good! "I need to see where all this leads." The series introduces us to Franklin and Irene York, a couple who years ago discovered a chamber buried in their backyard with a portal which inexplicably takes them to a strange, deserted planet. Everything seems to be going okay as they've kept it a secret, but things change when they consider telling others. Then all of a sudden a strange man named Jude shows up. Sissy Spacek & J.K. Simmons star as the lovely couple, with a cast including Chai Hansen, Adam Bartley, Julieta Zylberberg, Rocío Hernández, and Kiah McKirnan. I just hope the twist in this isn't that it's actually all fake and they fell for it.

Besides the fact that it unites two Academy Award winning actors, J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek, Prime Video’s Night Sky also has another strange distinction. The series, which drops its eight-episode first season on May 20, 2022, will be the second time Simmons has appeared in a sci-fi drama in which a doorway to a hidden world lies below ground level. It’s an odd niche, to be sure!
The earlier series in question is the short-lived Counterpart, which, despite having only two seasons on Starz, gained a very loyal following, some of whom question the show’s absence from our Best Sci Fi TV Shows of the Past 15 Years. In Counterpart, Simmons played two versions of the same man in two parallel universes linked by an underground tunnel in Berlin, a circumstance that arose under mysterious circumstances during the Cold War era in an alternate version of our own history.

A character can leave a lasting impression from the second they appear, whether we know it or not.
Sometimes it is about the story that the character is involved in, but in this case, it it was about the energy that character brings that helps The 100 stand out differently. Ilian was that character; from the moment he appeared on the show, it changed expectations.
Chai Hansen delivered a touching and epic performance as a person who found himself a bit lost but used that to motivate himself.
It wasn't only about how Ilian played a role in other people's stories once he crossed their path; it was also about the peace he could find in himself after struggling towards redemption.
Chai took the challenge of introducing a new character and made it an unforgettable experience that the audience spent with Ilian. It was so easy to root for Ilian because...

“I am the Monkey King. Who in the Seven Hells are you supposed to be?”
That question could apply to everyone in Netflix’s “The New Legends of Monkey,” which has given a significant cosmetic update to the story in the 16th-century Chinese novel “Journey to the West” by Wu Cheng’en. In the adaptation, the four main characters include two who have been gender-flipped from the original tale and none who are played by Chinese actors at all, which had sparked criticism of whitewashing earlier in production and which this review will address later.
Mainstream American audiences may not be quite as familiar with the original tale as viewers in Australia, whence this new adaptation hails. Aussie kids grew up with a late-‘70s version from Japan, known as “Monkey” or “Monkey Magic” in its BBC dubbed format. The affection for that series Down Under (and in the UK) cannot be overemphasized,...

(Spoiler alert: Do not read on if you have not watched Wednesday’s episode of “The 100,” titled “Die All, Die Merrily.”) “The 100” has never been shy about killing its characters, and on Wednesday’s episode it dealt one of its biggest blows yet, killing off three major Season 4 characters over the course of one hour. With each clan’s fate in the hands of their champions, Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos), Roan (Zach McGowan), Ilian (Chai Hansen) and Luna (Nadia Hilker) all entered the ring as competitors, knowing only one of them (or one of the other nine warriors) would survive.
