FX has finally set a premiere date for its Great Expectations limited series from writer/executive producer Steven Knight. The six-part adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic novel will premiere on Sunday, March 26, 2023 on Hulu with the release of the first two episodes.
The cast was announced in February 2022 and the first two official photos arrived in July 2022. FX chose to announce the premiere date on Charles Dickens’s birthday.
The premiere date announcement was accompanied by the series’ poster, along with a description of what the artwork represents:
“The newly released key art, true to FX and Steven Knight’s style, features one of literature’s most iconic characters, Miss Havisham ensnaring her pawns, Pip and Estella, in the headdress she still wears from her wedding that never was. To the naked eye, it looks as though Aubrey Plaza is reinventing herself. The 33-year-old actress, famous for her portrayal of the lovably sardonic April Ludgate on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, has spent the last year portraying characters far different than her familiar depictions of eye-rolling best friends in wacky comedies.
But to Plaza, it’s just a matter of scheduling. “Being on a television show for seven years, it's hard to break out of that box,” she says, speaking by phone with Et. “I guess to everyone else it's a reinvention, but for me, it's something that I've always been.”
With three projects in 2017 -- FX’s Legion, Ingrid Goes West and The Little Hours -- that showcased some of her best acting to date, Plaza has proved once and for all that she is a formidable talent, not just a sitcom trope.
Her year started off strong with a complex role on the first season...

This week’s question: What are your winter holiday season viewing habits (that are not for work)? Do you have traditional go-to shows or movies? Are you looking forward to anything in particular?
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
As I have written in the past, I’m not the kind of critic who loves holiday specials. Too often, they’re too hokey, too commercial, too weird (yes, Bill Murray, I still don’t get “A Very Murray Christmas”) or, in the case of countless Hallmark Channel movies, way too white. But I do have a few holiday media traditions, starting with my Spotify Holiday Tunes playlist, which gets fired up as...

Doug Jones is a chameleon who quite literally disappears into his work.
With over 150 film credits in the last three decades, Jones has become a king of the screen, but you may never have seen his face. Essentially, he has the kind of anonymity many celebrities dream of.
“I get the best of both worlds, honestly,” Jones admitted to Et when we sat down to discuss his latest transformation in Guillermo del Toro’s monster romance The Shape of Water, which is now in theaters. “I get to be in major motion pictures for 30 years and I can go to Starbucks and no one knows who I am. That’s delightful. But also, when it’s announced that I am at Comic-Con or something like that and I’m being ‘Doug Jones’ that day and people know it, I get to play that card, too.”

I’ll go with “Mindhunter.” There’s a cool juxtaposition of recording equipment used by weirdo FBI profiler Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and the corpse of a murdered woman, which just goes to show that Ford kind of looks at both as objects for his own research, instead of, you know, an ex-person who still has actual importance to people. It’s an effective way to get right into his somewhat sociopathic head and is a real treat for people who love pareidolia.

American Crime Story appears to be honoring the legacy that Gianni Versace left on the fashion industry.
In the latest teaser for The Assassination of Gianni Versace, a number of models are seen walking the runway in a haunting manner as Gianni, portrayed by Édgar Ramírez, talks over the fashion show.
"My shows must be about life," he proclaims as a Kate Moss look-alike hits the catwalk. "Life is precious."
Gunshots are then heard as the models stop mid-walk and a newscaster is heard announcing that the 50-year-old designer has been murdered at the hands of Andrew Cunanan, played by Darren Criss.
"Who will stop this murder spree?" another reporter is heard asking as we see a model crying on the runway.
Last month, the first trailer was released for Versace, which offered fans a first look at Penelope Cruz as Donatella Versace, Ramírez as Gianni, Ricky Martin as the designer's longtime partner, Antonio D'Amico, and Criss as...

Sarah Silverman opened Thursday’s new episode of “I Love You, America” with a heartfelt and emotional monologue about the current outpouring of sexual harassment and assault allegations dominating the news cycle. And she didn’t shy away from “the elephant masturbating in the room” — Louis C.K.
While Silverman described C.K. as “one of my best friends of over 25 years,” she also didn’t pull her punches in acknowledging that he “masturbated in front of women. He wielded his power with women in fucked-up ways, sometimes to the point where they left comedy entirely.”
Silverman appeared in multiple episodes of “Louie” during its FX run and, as stated above, has a close friendship with him. But in the context of “I Love You, America,” her choice to address the issue was grounded in a statement she made previously in the show’s run: “If it’s mentionable, it’s manageable.

Recency bias would suggest “Halt and Catch Fire,” even though its strongest season, this last one, took place in the 1990s, or “Stranger Things,” which is an extremely fun show but not an all-timer. That leaves two clear-cut favorites: “Freaks and Geeks,” Paul Feig and Judd Apatow’s ode to high school outcasts; and FX’s Cold War spy thriller “The Americans.” The former is one of the great one-season wonders, one of the best shows ever made about teenagers, and — between Feig,...

Since earning an Emmy nomination for her breakout role as Deputy Molly Solverson on the first season of Noah Hawley’s FX anthology series, Fargo, Allison Tolman has taken pains not to pigeonhole herself. But there is a common thread to her roles; she plays an "everywoman" just trying to live her life until she gets dropped into extraordinary circumstances.
When Tolman hears that description, she laughs with sudden recognition that, yes, certain roles appeal to her more than others. "I guess I'm not offered a lot of superheroes," she tells Et. "I tend to be drawn to the roles where women are the heroes of their own story, and most of those women are real women. They are just trying to get through the day and hold down a job. I think that that's enough of a challenge."

Everything is fake news, it is all a lie. What else could we expect from a show that is based around the election of somebody like Donald Trump? This week’s episode of American Horror Story: Cult is called Holes, and while Trypophobia may play a part, this week is more about revealing everything.
Ally (Sarah Paulson) is now alone as Ivy (Alison Pill) has left her and taken her son with her. When Meadow (Leslie Grossman) makes a shocking reappearance though, it seems that everything that Ally thought was real in her life was all a sham.
So, if you were waiting for some of the mystery of American Horror Story: Cult to be solved, this is the episode to do it. It is surprising in a way that so many of the secrets were actually given up to the audience, it makes you wonder what is left. For me,...

There are wedding bells in Ricky Martin's future!
The 45-year-old pop sensation recently sat down with Ocean Drive magazine and opened up about the upcoming wedding with fiancé, Jwan Yosef. Martin told the magazine that he was single for two and a half years before meeting Yosef, but there was immediate chemistry when they met.
"From the moment we shook hands for the first time, I knew this was special," he gushed. "He felt the same thing, and then everything was so organic. You cannot force things, and when things are very evident you just have to go with the flow and enjoy and help the inevitable in this case."

If I was to write that American Horror Story: Cult is a brave show to air on television, I’m sure many would say “no, it just sucks.” The thing is with this year’s choice of subject, which has a focus more on the psychological, it is going to divide viewers. This is a year that is definitely trying to mess with anybody who chooses to watch it. The question is going to be, is the risk worth it?
After the shooting, last week Ally (Sarah Paulson) finds herself exonerated from any blame for her actions. This doesn’t make everybody happy though as Ally and Ivy (Alison Pill) find out when they find protests outside their restaurant. With Kai (Evan Peters) showing support for Ally though, just what is he up to?

This week’s question: What is the worst show you’ve ever reviewed? Why was it so bad? Did you waver over the grade or rating you gave it?
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
I’ve compared “Mixology” to contracting TV herpes, “Fuller House” to exhuming a bloating, gaseous corpse and called “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders” the perfect xenophobic TV show for Trump’s America. Still, there’s little doubt that no show has ever made me so irate for its mere misguided existence than a little show called “H8r” on The CW. "You want a glass of Burgundy?" Pamela Adlon asks, encouragingly, as she sits down in a ritzy Beverly Hills restaurant. The multi-hyphenate force behind FX's Better Things then gestures to her full face of makeup, which has been professionally applied for a photo shoot: "By the way, this is not me." She catches a glimpse of her smoky eyes in a nearby mirror, she yanks out a few fake lashes. When the beverages arrive in giant goblets that make the pours look a little stingy, she offers a polite thanks.

After several decades as the king of multi-camera comedy, Chuck Lorre is learning a few new tricks this fall. Lorre just launched his first show for a streaming service, Netflix’s marijuana sitcom “Disjointed,” and is behind this fall’s “The Big Bang Theory” prequel series “Young Sheldon,” which represents his first foray into single-camera half-hours.
“I spent 30 years working in front of an audience, so I’ve got a lot of catching up to do,” Lorre recently told IndieWire and Kcrw’s “The Business,” of learning about filmmaking with “Sheldon.” “I was following [director] Jon Favreau around during the pilot shoot just asking questions. ‘What’s that lens? What’s the camera doing now?’ I got to watch the guy make a movie, which I’d never had a chance to do before.”
“Disjointed” was more familiar turf for Lorre, given its multi-camera setup in front of a studio audience.

Canaries is a British feature getting a Horror Channel FrightFest screening this weekend. We've been taking a look...
Think of big screen science fiction, and it’s likely to bring to mind glossy images of alien spacecrafts obliterating the White House, monsters running amuck in New York or Tokyo, or a post-apocalyptic Los Angelean wasteland. It’s perhaps unsurprising that these are the moments which linger in our collective consciousness; on screen at least, such cataclysmic events are usually clustered around the world’s big cities, with filmmakers giving little thought to how they might play out elsewhere.
There have been exceptions of course, such as classics like Village Of The Damned (1960) and The Stepford Wives (1975) and, in more recent years, UK filmmakers have also been looking to redress the balance. Marc Price set his 2008 zombie movie Colin on a suburban British estate, for example, while Stephen Fingleton...

With the recent release of the erotic thriller Darker Shades of Elise, I got a chance to talk to Becky Fletcher about her feature films coming out 2017, the challenges of acting and her morbidly unique acting bucket list. Check out the interview, in full, below:
How did you first get into acting?
I have done it my whole life. I started off doing stage at school and progress my studies to A level university. I didn’t come into screen acting until I moved to London, it’s one of the things I came here for, I wanted to do more film and stuff behind the camera. I didn’t really start training in that discipline until I moved here a couple of years ago, but it’s kind of been an ongoing thing since then.

Days after this year’s Emmy nominations were announced, it’s still stunning that the third season of “BoJack Horseman” was overlooked by TV Academy members for Best Animated Series.

1987 was an exceedingly awesome year for kid-centric horror movies. In the span of just a few months, we were treated to both Tibor Takács’ The Gate and Fred Dekker’s The Monster Squad, and honestly, there may have not been a better year to be a young genre fan during that decade than in good ol’ 1987. And while there were an incredible amount of quality horror movies for this writer to dig into from that 12-month span of releases, one movie that I always had a deep appreciation for was The Gate, a story that I related to on numerous levels, even if I never happened to summon a horde of demons from digging a hole in my backyard.
An ambitious and good-hearted modern fairy tale that bluntly examined the universal horrors of growing up—both literally and figuratively—The Gate is an admirable genre debut from Takács, who had previously worked in Canadian television,...

Playing tough-loving single mother Cissy Saint on Snowfall, filmmaker John Singleton’s new drama about the origins of the crack epidemic in America, Michael Hyatt got the part the way she’s gotten countless others: Auditioning.
