“SNL” used the occasion of Jason Momoa hosting and promoting “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” to revisit the recent meme-ing of men always thinking about the Roman Empire. The music video comedy sketch opens with several women singing about their distant male partners, wondering what’s going on in their minds as they stare into the distance.
Rather than another woman, the emphatic answer comes: Rome.
Momoa, no stranger to playing warriors from “Game of Thrones” to “Dune” to “See”, switches into full Roman gladiator attire as he delivers praises for the glorious civilization, its fun facts and its continuing influence.
“The Roman Empire, Ancient Rome / Five times a day, it pops into my dome,” Momoa declares. “Which reminds me, they invented the dome / Just one of the reasons that I think about Rome.”
“Caesar, straight didn’t give a f–k / Drank ice cold water from an aqueduct,” Momoa continues,...

You just can't keep a good (or a bad) ape down! The astonishing longevity of the "Planet of the Apes" franchise cannot be overstated. Save for "Star Wars," it's the most successful sci-fi series to date, spawning nine films over six decades. Part of the appeal of "Apes" is its ability to create a dystopian world that still remains hopeful. Granted, the original pentalogy of films started out with a lot of gloom and doom that bottled the revolutionary spirit of the late sixties and paired it with the unrest and anti-war protests of the seventies. Moving away from Charlton "Get your stinkin' paws off of me" Heston and focusing on Roddy McDowall's lovable ape leader Caesar changed the dire finale of the first "Planet of the Apes" and turned it into a much more inspirational epic.
After Tim Burton's action-packed but ultimately soulless 2001 remake, "Planet of the Apes,...

It was announced six years ago that Denis Villeneuve would direct a Cleopatra movie for Sony Pictures. It’s been some time since we last heard about the project, but scooper Daniel Richtman believes that Villeneuve will finally start shooting the movie next year.
Not only that, but the report seems to indicate that Denis Villeneuve will be reuniting with his Dune stars as Zendaya is attached to star as Cleopatra. It adds that Timothée Chalamet has been offered the role of Octavius and Daniel Craig is being eyed for Caesar. Very interesting, but take it with a grain of salt for now until something more official has been announced.

Zendaya, the Emmy-winning star of Euphoria and Spider-Man: No Way Home, is set to play the legendary Egyptian queen Cleopatra in a new biopic directed by Denis Villeneuve, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Dune and Arrival. The film, which is based on the best-selling book by Stacy Schiff, will explore Cleopatra’s ruthless rise to power using her skills as a seductress, a strategist, and a survivor.
According to a tweet by insider Daniel Richtman, Timothée Chalamet, who co-starred with Zendaya in Dune, was offered the role of Octavius, the Roman general who became Cleopatra’s enemy after the death of Julius Caesar. Daniel Craig, the current James Bond, is being sought to play Caesar, Cleopatra’s lover and ally. The film is expected to begin production in late 2024.

Cleopatra has been a popular subject for Hollywood adaptations, most famously portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1963 epic that nearly bankrupted 20th Century Fox.

The marketing for Disney and 20th Studios’ “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” got off to a strong start with 75 million views in 24 hours across platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, X/Twitter and more, Variety has learned. Social engagement for the trailer came in with 72,000 mentions in 24 hours, boosted by 11,000 TikTok comments and a top 10 trend on X. The studio launched a trailer tease the day before the official clip’s drop, and that earned 25 million views in 24 hours. All in all, “Kingdom” content earned a combined 100 million views during the film’s marketing launch period.
While the full “Kingdom” trailer debuted to a sturdy 75 million views in 24 hours, that number of course does not compete with such recent Disney blockbusters as “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (172 million views), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (148 million) and “The Little Mermaid” (104 million views). Take a look at "Kingdom of the Planet of The Apes" from Disney's 20th Century, directed by Wes Ball as the first in a new 'Pota' film franchise, adapting elements from the novel "Monkey Planet" (1963) by author Pierre Boulle:
“…after the events of 2017's ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’, many apes societies have grown from when ‘Caesar’ brought his people to an oasis...
"... as humans have been reduced to a feral-like existence.
“Some groups have never heard of Caesar...
"..., while others have contorted his teaching to build burgeoning empires."
"In this setting, one ape leader begins to enslave other groups to find human technology...
"...while another ape, who watched his clan be taken, embarks on a journey to find freedom.
“And a young human woman becomes key to the quest, although she has plans of her own."

The Fallout series is full of unsolved mysteries. Why are aliens visiting? Where did the obelisk under the Dunwich Building come from? What happened to the rest of the world? But the biggest mystery in the franchise that has persisted since its inception is “Why is the game’s world a radioactive wasteland?” Well, technically we know the answer: China and the U.S. launched nukes at one another, but nobody knows why or who struck first. Until today.

Andy Serkis is coming off his riveting performance in Disney+’s Andor, but the role that made him a fan-favorite could be coming back around again if Warner Bros. and New Line have their way.
The studios announced in February they were looking to develop new Lord of the Rings movies that would be set during the Third Age — during which Serkis’ devious, tragic character Gollum was around. Original trilogy director Peter Jackson and his writing team are in talks about potentially being part of the new films.
There are many “ifs” to all this right now, but we asked Serkis another: If a movie is greenlit, with Jackson’s team in the mix, would he be interested in being a part of it?
“I adore those guys and they are a second family to me,” Serkis tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve spent so many years making films with them.

If you enjoyed Netflix’s docudrama Queen Cleopatra, you might be in the mood for a fully fictionalised dramatization of Cleopatra’s story, or for something else set around the same time period and following some of the same people. If so, we have got you covered!
We’ve given each of these series an “accuracy rating” to indicate how near or far they are to reality, but these should be taken with a bit of a pinch of salt, as a general guideline only. Real life ancient history’s relationship to TV and film versions of it is pretty much the same as the relationship between George Rr Martin’s Fire and Blood and the TV adaptation House of the Dragon. Fire and Blood is a pretend history, and it provides several different versions of events from different sources, with little to no indication which one is the “truth.

Six years after the release of their last album, Queens of the Stone Age are back, this time “in Times New Roman,” or so the title of their upcoming eighth album claims. They’re heralding the release with “Emotion Sickness,” a typically muscular rocker with shades of Elo-style vocal harmonies, as frontman Josh Homme leads a round of “Baby don’t care for me, had to let her go.” A video for the song, directed by Liam Lynch, will debut Friday. In Times New Roman … will come out June 16.

Episode one ends with Queen Cleopatra getting rid of her husband-brother, Ptolemy Xiii, and his advisor Pothinus, by killing them, and her sister being made captive by Julius Caesar, who took her back to Rome to put her behind bars. Cleopatra is now pregnant with Julius’s child, and she considers it good news. Meanwhile, she is on the verge of becoming an influential leader, and her affair with Julius Caesar, which resulted in pregnancy, would be the beginning of the merger between two ancient empires.
Cleopatra gives birth to a baby boy, and with the birth of a child, she cements her power over the Roman Empire as well as gives Julius an heir. She is sure Julius would consider her child one of his many heirs. The child Caesarion is a symbol of the bringing together of two powers, which are the Roman Republic and the Ptolemaic dynasty.

A more valid criterion will be to see how its influence survives today, or say, how at home we would be if we are somehow sent back to one of these civilisations?
On both these standards, ancient Rome, say in the late Republican period (1st century Bce), could well qualify.
In Rome of this period, you would find yourself in a large sprawling city, where plush neighbourhoods with elegant villas are interspersed with more crowded areas full of multi-storey buildings, streets teem with people from all over the known world, there are markets and various services, common people eagerly follow and gossip over the foibles of the rich and famous, are swayed by sops and entertainment spectacles, stay keenly involved in governance which, however, is largely a preserve of professional politicians with issues over public works, food subsidies, corruption et al predominating.

Jimmy Fallon is as frustrated waiting for something to happen, or not happen, with Donald Trump’s legal situation as a lot of you likely are, and in his monologue on Friday’s “The Tonight Show,” he compared it to it when someone goes into labor and then 4 days later still hasn’t had the baby.
Fallon got to that joke by running through several of Trump’s more recent outbursts. “I don’t know if you guys saw this, but late last night Trump threatening the Manhattan District Attorney, saying that if he’s charged, ‘death and destruction’ could follow. Americans said, ‘no way that’s only gonna happen if they ban TikTok,” Fallon joked.
“Yep, ‘death and destruction.’ It sounds bad, but he makes the same threat when Little Caesar’s forgets his crazy bread,” Fallon continued.
