Disney Plus is adding an underrated Marvel movie this week. On New Year’s Day, the Mouse House’s streaming service will debut yet another film from the X-Men franchise that Disney inherited from Fox. While we’re still waiting to find out how the studio handles the R-rated Logan, January 1st sees its predecessor, 2013’s The Wolverine, become available to stream for subscribers in the US and other territories.
Hugh Jackman’s second solo outing as the immortal antihero has Logan travel to Japan when he’s summoned by an elderly businessman who he saved during World War II. Sucked into a shadowy realm of yakuza and samurai, Wolverine is pushed to the emotional and physical brink as he faces his own mortality for the first time. Rila Fukushima, Tao Okamoto, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada and Famke Janssen co-star.

The Wolverine was quietly removed from Disney Plus this week. The Mouse House’s streaming service has been periodically adding Fox’s Marvel movies to its library over the past 12 months, but the problem with these older films is that they usually come with pre-existing rights deals that have to be fulfilled. That’s what’s happened in this case, as though the Hugh Jackman vehicle went up on D+ in September, it’s now been taken down.
Unlike other streaming services, Disney Plus doesn’t tend to advertise when titles leave, but we can assume in the case of The Wolverine that it’s down to a previous licensing agreement which needs to play out before it can return to the platform at a later date. This only applies in the US, by the way, as those in other territories will still be able to catch the movie on the site.

This Westworld review contains spoilers.
Westworld Season 3 Episode 7
How someone feels about the third season of Westworld can be determined by a number of factors, but one of the most important ones is shaping up to be how a viewer feels about Caleb Nichols (Aaron Paul) and his place in the Dolores Abernathy Expanded Universe. An actor like Aaron Paul doesn’t tend to be brought on board to be a part-time player, and as the third season has progressed, Caleb and his mysterious past have become more and more important to the narrative, like how bit players would be pulled into the schemes of the guests in the park. Once upon a time, William led Dolores across the park in search of adventure. Now, Dolores is leading Caleb across North America in pursuit of her own grand adventure, except this change in the narrative isn’t reset at the end of the month.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the seventh episode of “Westworld” Season 3.
The penultimate episode of “Westworld” Season 3 finally gave viewers the Dolores-Maeve showdown that had been teased all season long, and it did not disappoint.
But prior to that, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and Caleb (Aaron Paul) arrived at Serac’s (Vincent Cassel) facility in Mexico where he imprisoned those who he deemed outliers to his world view. It was also where he had been keeping his old super computer Solomon under lock and key. After wandering through the halls and engaging in a long conversation with Solomon, Caleb managed to piece together the fragments of his memory to make one whole, traumatic picture.
It turned out that he had been identified as an outlier after being discharged from the military. He was taken to this facility and reprogrammed by Serac’s sick psychiatrists...

(Spoilers ahead for the April 19 episode of “Westworld” on HBO)
So, uh, a lot happened on “Westworld” on Sunday, and the sort of low-key spy games that Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and her crew have been playing have now spilled over into a full-fledged war with Serac (Vincent Cassel) now that Serac is in control of Delos. And on top of that, Maeve (Thandie Newton) is about to go all-out after Charlotte-Dolores destroyed Hector’s (Rodrigo Santoro) pearl.
Maeve didn’t spend a long time mourning, though. She was inside Serac’s Matrix-like virtual construct — her old one destroyed a couple episodes back, as you may recall — trying to interrogate Connells-Dolores when that tragedy struck. Charlotte was presumably going to destroy Maeve as well but she was interrupted by a gunfight and had to flee.

"Stop thinking! What are you feeling...?" Gravitas has debuted the trailer for an indie drama titled Lost Transmissions, the feature directorial debut of Los Angeles filmmaker Katharine O'Brien. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, and also stopped by the Shanghai, Nashville, Whistler, and Glasgow Film Festivals. When an acclaimed music producer goes off his meds for schizophrenia, a young songwriter chases him though La's music scene trying to get him psychiatric care, revealing the troubling inadequacies of our mental health care system in the process. Based on a true story, Lost Transmissions is an intimate look at human emotions and the devastating reality of treating mental illness in a system that doesn’t seem equipped to deal with it. Starring Simon Pegg and Juno Temple, with Jamie Harris, Tao Okamoto, Rebecca Hazlewood, Bria Vinaite, and Alexandra Daddario. Looks a bit cheesy but might be alright. Here's the...

Bringing together one of the most cult directors (Miike), one of the most popular crime novelists and a great cast seems like a recipe for an inevitable success. How this film managed to be so mediocre, remains a mystery for me. Let us take things from the beginning though.
Higashino, in one of his most surrealistic (even sci-fi one could say) works, bases its story on the concept of the Laplace Demon, a creature that knows the precise location and momentum of every atom in the universe, and thus, can predict everything that will happen in the near future. The film and the actual story, however, begin much differently, through a case of the murder of two people being poisoned to death by hydrogen sulfide at hot springs located in different regions. The police is perplexed and ask Shusuke Aoe, a geochemist college professor, to help, but...

And just like that, another major piece of the puzzle has fallen into place for DC Universe’s live action Titans series.
Hot on the heels of our scoop from earlier this morning saying that Lex Luthor is being eyed as season 3’s big bad comes confirmation that his bodyguard, Mercy Graves, has been cast for season 2. If anything, this supports my own speculation that Lex will be name-dropped throughout the next wave of episodes so that groundwork be laid for his actual introduction.
In case you were wondering, Natalie Gumede has landed the gig, with her iteration of the character being described as follows:
“Mercy Graves is the ruthless, cunning, right hand and bodyguard to the notorious Lex Luthor – serving her boss with unquestioned loyalty. Her connection to the Luthors runs deep, as Mercy has been a friend of the family and in Lex’s life since they were young.

How much can a pair of tremendous performances elevate a feature? Is a movie ultimately flawed if the acting is what makes it worth seeing? On the flip side, can a duo on screen drag a film across the finish line? If you’ve read my reviews in the past, you’ll know I think that performance can overcome other flaws, so Lost Transmissions is in luck. One of the titles to have just played at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, it’s a flick that needed the acting within it in order to survive. Just what do I mean? Well, read on for more… The film is a melodrama about two troubled individuals, though one is struggling way more with mental illness. For Hannah (Juno Temple), life is hard, but she’s not suffering like Theo Ross (Simon Pegg). When they meet at a party, she’s charmed by the music producer.

"You need to open up yourself to complete reprogramming." Breaker has debuted the second official trailer for a trippy indie sci-fi thriller titled Perfect, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival last year (watch the first trailer). This experimental, retro-ish sci-fi project is about a boy who goes to a mysterious genetic-engineering clinic, only to discover the price of perfection will cost him everything, including his mind, body and his soul. Garrett Wareing stars as the boy, Vessel 13, with Abbie Cornish, Courtney Eaton, Tao Okamoto, Martin Sensmeier, Leonardo Nam, Alicia Sanz, and Maurice Compte. This is executive produced and presented by Steven Soderbergh, directed by Eddie Alcazar, featuring music by Flying Lotus. This does look totally wild - some very hypnotic, mesmerizing social commentary laced with a big hit of acid. Some actors seem to come out of left field as far as when and where they arrive, but once they show what they’re made of it becomes a welcome surprise. Lex Luthor is coming to the Arrowverse on Supergirl Season 4, and he'll be played by Jon Cryer.
Supergirl has done more than its share of bringing characters from Superman's world into the fold. For starters, Jimmy Olsen is in nearly every episode, and we had an entire season with Cat Grant making Kara's life a little bit more anxious, and another with Metropolis' own Maggie Sawyer. The show brought Tyler Hoechlin in as Superman himself in the season two opener, which itself was loaded with Man of Steel lore and again for the brilliant Elseworlds crossover. We've had plenty of one-and-done villains and minor recurring characters who come right out of the pages of Superman comics, but one has cast the longest shadow...

Exclusive: A new villain is rising in National City. Rhona Mitra has been tapped for a recurring role on the CW’s series Supergirl as Mercy Graves, Lex Luthor’s longtime bodyguard. Also cast in a recurring role on the DC series is Robert Baker, who will play Mercy’s brother, Otis Graves.
Based on the iconic DC character, Mercy Graves (Mitra) is an ex-Cadmus agent who has always believed in human exceptionalism. But with both Lex and Lillian in prison, Mercy is stepping out of the Luthor shadow and running her own show. With her biting wit and lethal brawn, Mercy steadily becomes a key figure in National City’s growing “human-first” movement.
Baker’s Otis Graves is Mercy’s defacto right hand man. What he lacks in brains, he makes up for with his savant-like abilities to assassinate aliens. Otis is a character from the Superman movies...

After a decade of failed development plans, Brian K. Vaughn and Pia ‘s “Y: The Last Man” has a real chance of reaching the screen. FX recently ordered a pilot episode for the post-apocalyptic drama, with Michael Green and Aida Mashaka (“Luke Cage”) as co-showrunners and Melina Matsoukas set to direct.
“Y: The Last Man” follows the story of escape artist Yorick Brown after a sudden plague kills everything on the planet with a Y chromosome — except for him and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand. As society crumbles, Yorick sets out to find what killed off all the men. During its 60-issue run, the series explored race, gender, and sexuality, winning three Eisner awards.
With a set cast yet to be announced for the upcoming adaptation, we put together some suggestions for actors who could live up to the increasing hype around the long-awaited adaptation.

A trailer for Eddie Alcazar's Perfect was released earlier this week. The film is a sci-fi thriller, in which a young man is seduced by advertisements and surgical implants. Perfect recently had its World Premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, in Austin, Texas (March 11th). The films stars: Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch, 2011), Courtney Eaton (Mad Max: Fury Road), Martin Sensmeier, Tao Okamoto and Maurice Compte. This is a Brainfeeder Films production. And, the visually stunning trailer is hosted below. As well, a movie poster has been released for Perfect. It shows the main character, Vessel 13 (Garrett Wareing), distorted in colour and shape. The strange look likely represents the main character's distorted view of himself. After his implants are installed, his reality is also altered. This is Alcazar's first feature film. Perfect is sure to show in other film festivals this year, before showing through a wider release. As well,...

The first trailer has been released for the Steven Soderbergh-produced sci-fi film Perfect. The movie was directed by Eddie Alcazar (Fuckkkyouuu) and it tells the fascinating story of a young man with a violent past who enters a mysterious clinic where genetic engineering is used to radically transform the bodies and minds of its patients. The film is being scored by Flying Lotus and this is the synopsis:
A boy in a cold and stark modern house, in a vaguely science fictional world, is seduced by advertisements of perfection to install implantable characteristics directly into his body. The implants heal his dark, twisted visions, but come with a corporeal cost. He persists on applying them, hoping to reach perfection, but ultimately he discovers that purity of mind is not exactly as he’s imagined.
The movie stars Garrett Wareing, Courtney Eaton, Tao Okamoto, Maurice Compte, and Abbie Cornish. There's...

"Be careful, sweetheart, don't get too close." Whoa, this looks trippy. A trailer has debuted for a retro sci-fi film titled Perfect, premiering at the SXSW Film Festival this month. This experimental, creative project is about a boy who goes to a mysterious genetic-engineering clinic, only to discover the price of perfection will cost him everything, including his mind, body and his soul. Garrett Wareing stars as the boy, along with Abbie Cornish, Courtney Eaton, Tao Okamoto, Martin Sensmeier, Leonardo Nam, Alicia Sanz, and Maurice Compte. This looks very cool, I'm very curious to see more, and hopefully the reviews out of SXSW are good. The film is being presented by Steven Soderbergh, which is a good sign it's unique. It seems a bit like "Black Mirror" meets Beyond the Black Rainbow-esque criticism of society's pursuits of perfection. Here's the first official trailer (+ teaser poster) for Eddie Alcazar's Perfect,...

“Manhunt”, which is a remake of the Japanese action classic from 1976 of the same name directed by Jun’ya Satô and the adaptation of the novel written by Jukô Nishimura, is the new film directed by the acclaimed action master John Woo, and stars Zhang Hanyu, Masaharu Fukuyama, Jun Kunimura, Tao Okamoto, Ha ji-won, Qi Wei and Angeles Woo among others.
“Manhunt” is the maestro’s return to his definitive style: the gun-fu, the heroic bloodshed. The master hasn’t directed a film of this style since “Mission Impossible 2”, and if you exclude that cool Hollywood mess, it is since “Hard Boiled” that he hasn´t made a Hong Kong action film. Fans of the director and of Hong Kong action cinema have been waiting for years for this moment to come, and it’s finally here.

After a decade-long stint in Hollywood, which includes the likes of a bombastic Mission: Impossible entry and the infinitely rewatchable Face/Off, in the last decade, John Woo has mostly stuck to large-scale Chinese epics which haven’t quite made a splash stateside. However, that could change which is next project, which finds him returning to his action roots.
