Exclusive: XYZ Films has acquired North American rights to the LGBTQ horror-thriller Hypochondriac, starring Zach Villa (American Horror Story), Devon Graye (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore), Madeline Zima (Californication), Chris Doubek (Boyhood), Marlene Forte (Knives Out) and Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds), ahead of its world premiere in the Midnighters section of the 2022 SXSW Film Festival on March 14. The indie studio’s domestic distribution division has slated the film for a nationwide release in theaters and on digital later this year.

Filmmaking contests rarely attract enough high-quality films to result in an embarrassment of riches, but horror anthology “The ABCs of Death 2” produced so many impressive short films that a third compilation was in order. That collection of shorts, entitled “The ABCs of Death 2.5,” premiered Tuesday on Vimeo, where viewers can rent the film for $2.99 or purchase it for $5.99.

The first two “ABCs of Death” were both comprised of 26 individual horror shorts, each corresponding to a letter of the alphabet. Both compilations saved a single letter to be used as the basis for a global filmmaking competition, the winner of which would have his or her short included in the final movie. In 2014, the second edition of the competition attracted 541 entries from filmmakers in more than 40 countries. Every short had to be three minutes long and begin with the letter “M.

What is "Dangerous Men," and when can you have its sickness in your head? This afternoon, in Austin, TX, the madmen (and madwomen) who put on Fantastic Fest each year held one of their secret screenings. The first secret screening, held a few days ago, was for Guillermo Del Toro's "Crimson Peak." I would imagine many people walked into the second secret screening hoping for some big-budget movie, like "Cloud Atlas" from a few years ago or some intriguing arthouse title from another country, like "Goodnight Mommy" at last year's fest. Nope. Instead, what Tim League and his accomplices did was premiere their latest acquisition title, a film they've been chasing since the day they started the company. This is along the lines of "Miami Connection" or "The Visitor" or this spring's remarkable "Roar!", films that were released once before but that never got the right kind of support...
