How a 1994 indie hit from Kevin Smith gave birth to an unlikely franchise...
In 1993, Kevin Smith made a movie. Clerks was shot in black and white over the course of three weeks, at night, in the convenience store where Smith worked during the day, on a shoestring budget of $27,575. Smith funded the film himself by dipping into his savings, selling all his comics and maxing out several credit cards.
Even though it became an indie phenomenon when it was picked up by Bob and Harvey Weinstein's Miramax (who gave it a new soundtrack using a post-production budget that was ten times the cost of principal photography) at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, it doesn't have 'franchise starter' written all over it.
Long considered a Gen X touchstone, Clerks is a funny and filthy slice of life movie, which equates a working day for Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) to his namesake's Inferno.

Washed-up Richard Thorncroft (Julian Barratt) peaked with hit 1980s detective show ‘Mindhorn’, playing the titular Isle of Man sleuth with a robotic eye that allowed him to literally “see the truth”. Decades later, when a deranged Manx criminal demands Mindhorn as his nemesis, Thorncroft returns to the scene of his greatest triumphs for one last chance to reignite his glory days, professional credibility and even romance with former co-star/paramour Patricia Deville (Essie Davis).
The idea of fans blurring the line between fiction and reality has been used numerous times in cinema, the latest example of which – Mindhorn – is a very British take on the idea: at once both spoofing and homaging the likes of 70s and 80s TV shows such as Bergerac,...

The Weinstein Company is taking a flying leap into the world of animation, announcing today the formation of their brand new animation label “Mizchief,” which will roll out later this summer with the release of their film “Leap!” The company has also announced the second film set to bear the Mizchief label, the Gary Wang and Life Chaser Animation Studios’ feature “The Guardian Brothers.”
Of the news, TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein commented in an official statement, “I named the label Mizchief because that’s how my son pronounces mischief. Animation is a playful new direction for us and I’m thrilled to expand the TWC repertoire into a whole new category of films for our kids to enjoy and for us to enjoy with them. All of these films will share incredible stories that most importantly both inspire and entertain our kids.”

The winding tale of Justice League Dark continues. This is one movie that can’t seem to catch a break or gain any momentum. For the longest time, fan favorite filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was attached to bring the project to the big screen. However, like with many of del Toro’s projects in the past, he ultimately had to drop out. Stepping in to take his place was Doug Liman, who hopped on over from the long-gestating Gambit standalone flick.
The film continued its development over the course of the next year and a half. Then, last week, Liman dropped out. It made sense. Liman has another big sci-fi project in the form of Chaos Walking, and he’s also got the impending sequel for the Edge of Tomorrow sequel, Live Die Repeat and Repeat.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A wonderfully silly sendup of fandom and nostalgia… and an absolutely hilarious smackdown of actorly pomposity and delusions of celebrity grandeur. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

You remember Mindhorn, don’t you? The hit 80s British detective show about the detective with the bionic eye that could “see truth”? And his catchphrase was a low rumble of “It’s truth time”? C’mon! It was like The Six Million Dollar Man meets Magnum Pi… except, of course, it was set on the Isle of Man instead of Hawaii, but they’re almost the same place, right? (Spoiler for my American readers: The Isle of Man is a small rugged place in the middle of the Irish Sea. It’s about as far from a tropical paradise as an island can...

The Mighty Boosh’s Julian Barratt and Yonderland’s Simon Farnaby talk to us about their Isle of Man action comedy, Mindhorn...
When you get to chat to two comedy geniuses at once, it doesn’t feel much like an interview. After McCurdy’s death his embalmed body went unclaimed, and so began a strange chain of events which ended with McCurdy’s mummified corpse being discovered in 1976 by the production team for The Six Million Dollar Man TV show. A new writer has joined The Six Billion Dollar Man movie, and the film is very close to getting made, Mark Wahlberg tells us…
Director Peter Berg and producer/star Mark Wahlberg reunite for the second time with Deepwater Horizon, that’s in cinemas in the UK today. Previously, they made Lone Survivor together, and they’ve already shot their third movie, Patriots Day, which tells the story of the Boston marathon bombing of 2013, and the hunt for those responsible. That gets a wide release early next year.
The pair now have plans for a fourth collaboration too, with a remake of The Six Million Dollar Man, that somewhat inevitably is going by the name of The Six Billion Dollar Man.
Chatting to us whilst promoting Deepwater Horizon, Wahlberg confirmed that there’s been some significant progress on the project.

No, Nick Zano has not been recast. Instead, his character's grandfather, the Golden Age Steel or Commander Steel has just joined the show. One of the earliest members of the Justice Society of America, Henry Heywood was a World War II soldier who was damaged during combat and had several mechanical devices installed to compensate for his injuries (think The Six Million Dollar Man). His grandson, Nate Heywood, was a former football star who had a gruesome injury that resulted in his leg's amputation. A freak accident caused by a group of super-villains triggered his latent metahuman gene and Nate became a being of living steel. Unable to control his powers due to his inability to feel, Dr. Mid-Nite and Mr. Terrific designed a "second-skin" costume that restricted his superhuman strength to manageable levels. Just how much of this comic book lore will be followed on Legends of Tomorrow remains to be seen.

There’s something about team-ups that fascinate fans. And on the big screen, movies like Frankenstein Meets Dracula to Godzilla vs. King Kong, and Avp: Alien vs. Predator were all “can’t miss” affairs. Well, I actually did miss the last one, but it you get the idea.
As I write this, the newest superhero blockbuster, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice premieres tomorrow. I’m sure the debut has been analyzed to death by the time this column is out, but there’s some strange things going on. And I wanted to analyze it all before the starting gun officially went off and pop culture runs full speed down the track.
One peculiar thing is that I can’t believe I’m not more excited about this movie. If I were to go back in time (ala last week’s column) to tell my 10-year old self that there...

In this latest outing of The CW’s Scarlet Speedster-centric show, The Reverse-Flash Returns does exactly as it says on the tin. As it says, Reverse-Flash is well and truly back. For now, at least.
With the return of the show’s greatest villain to date comes one of the show’s best episodes to date, which is no mean feat considering the high quality of episode that The Flash deals out on a regular basis. Whilst Eobard Thawne would sadly depart present-day Central City by the time this outing came to a close, the episode gave us an insight into this rogue’s mindset and what drove him to become the villainous Reverse-Flash. Added to that, it also made for some awesome viewing to see Barry Allen confronted with the man who is (or should that be ‘will be’?) responsible for killing his mother and for causing...

40 years ago today, “The Bionic Woman” premiered on ABC. A spin-off of “The Six Million Dollar Man,” “Bionic Woman” gave Jaime Sommers her own series. For three seasons (starting on ABC, then moving to NBC), viewers watched Jaime on spy missions where, thanks to her bionics, she can run faster than 60 miles per hour, use advanced hearing and extraordinary strength in her right arm. “Bionic Woman” got an NBC remake in 2007 but only aired eight episodes before the WGA Strike halted production. Other notable January 14 happenings in pop culture history: • 1990: Giacomo Puccini opera “Tosca” premiered in Rome. • 1952: “The Today Show” debuted on NBC. • 1963: Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar” was published in England under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. • 1966: David Bowie’s single “Can’t Help Thinking About Me” was released in the U.K. It later became the first record of his to be released in the U.

Despite previously comparing The Six Billion Dollar Man to a superhero, it sounds like the upcoming reboot is going to be heading in a much different direction. In fact, it sounds like this movie will be more along the lines of the Bourne franchise than The Avengers, something which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
After all, many reboots have suffered when studios have attempted to turn small screen properties into massive blockbusters (just look at The A-Team), and that’s not something The Six Million Dollar Man ever was.
In a recent interview at the UK premiere of Daddy’s Home, star Mark Wahlberg spoke about the direction of The Six Billion Dollar Man, and here’s what he had to say:
“We’ll be shooting it in the fall. [I’m] very, very excited. Damian [Szifron] has written an amazing script, and I can’t wait. I think it’s going to be a game changer.

For a little more than a year now, Mark Wahlberg has been building a remake to the popular television series The Six Million Dollar Man, with an eye toward starring in the movie (and possibly launching a franchise). Though various obstacles have stood in its way, Wahlberg’s dream project is about to become a reality, as several big steps – and one big change – locked into step. Wild Tales writer-director Damian Szifron, who had been tapped to write the screenplay for The Six Billion Dollar Man (with a "B"), now has been handed the directing reigns according to a press release sent out by TWC-Dimension. The release states that principal photography won’t begin on the film until September of 2016, however, as the movie won’t aim to be in theaters until December 22, 2017. Two years from now? In case you’d forgotten, The Weinstein Company’s genre wing TWC-Dimension is making a remaking “The Six Million Dollar Man” TV series into a movie starring Mark Wahlberg. And perhaps strangely enough, at least for cinephiles, the writer/director is Oscar-nominated Argentinian filmmaker Damián Szifron who helmed last year’s comedic dark anthology film “Wild Tales” with different vignettes centered around revenge and social indignation. He had previously been tapped to to write the movie, but today it has been revealed that he's now landed the gig in the director's chair too. Updated as “The Six Billion Dollar Man” — I supposed millions aren't so huge in 2015 — TWC-Dimension has just dated the film for December 22, 2017. And they’re really planning ahead since principal photography won’t commence until September 2016. Oscar-nominated and acclaimed filmmaker Damian Szifron ("Wild Tales") has now been confirmed to direct "The Six Billion Dollar Man" for TWC-Dimension.
The confirmation comes as the studio has announced a December 22nd 2017 release date for this film adaptation of the classic TV series "The Six Million Dollar Man". Shooting will commence in September next year.
The story follows military officer, Steve Austin, who becomes part of a top secret government program after a horrific accident leaves him near death. With the help of cutting edge technology, Steve is brought back to life with extraordinary abilities - the world’s first truly bionic man.
Mark Wahlberg will star in the film which originally was slated to be a potential Peter Berg directorial effort. Szifron is taking the helm from a script he also wrote. Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Bob Weinstein will produce.

Damian Szifron, whose satirical Wild Tales earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film this past spring, has been tapped to pen a script for Six Billion Dollar Man, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Mark Wahlberg is already attached to star in the updated version of the 1970s TV series The Six Million Dollar Man, which was in turn adapted from Martin Caidan’s Cyborg. He’s expected to play Steve Austin, no longer a test pilot (as he was in the TV show) but now a military officer horribly wounded in an accident only to have his life saved, RoboCop style, by technology. Now part-man, part-machine, and gifted with inhuman strength and speed, Austin finds himself unusually well-qualified for dangerous work in espionage.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. Better than he was before. Better… stronger… faster. – The Six Million Dollar Man
So – where were we?

Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg (Hancock), who worked together on the box office hit "Lone Survivor," are re-teaming for a big screen version of "The Six Million Dollar Man" TV series. The new movie will be called "The Six Billion Dollar Man," apparently factoring in inflation. The story focuses on a former astronaut Steve Austin who, after a horrific crash of an experimental plane, is saved by doctors when he is fitted with bionic replacements . both legs, his right arm and left eye. With super-human power, he becomes a force to be reckoned with for the government as a secret agent for the Office of Scientific Intelligence. The plan is to begin filming late spring/early summer of next year.

The Six Million Dollar Man is now The Six Billion Dollar Man. And he's Mark Wahlberg, too....
The big screen take on The Six Million Dollar Man - which has been upgraded to The Six Billion Dollar Man - is pressing ahead, and it's now been revealed that Mark Wahlberg is set to take the title role.
Using the 1970s TV show as its inspiration, The Six Billion Dollar Man will see Wahlberg taking on the role of Steve Austin, a former astronaut who is seriously injured in a plane crash. Yet he's saved by doctors, who give him new bionic legs, a bionic arm, and a bionic eye. From there, he becomes an agent at the Office Of Scientific Intelligence.
The things you have to do to get a job.
The Six Billion Dollar Man is being directed by Peter Berg, who steered Wahlberg to a hit with Lone Survivor.

"The Six Million Dollar Man" isn't cool. You know what's cool? "The Six Billion Dollar Man." That's right, the '70s series adaptation is getting a title boost via inflation as the long-brewing project moves ahead with Peter Berg attached to direct his "Lone Survivor" star Mark Wahlberg. The story seems to be pretty much the same, centering on "former astronaut Steve Austin who, after a horrific crash of an experimental plane, is saved by doctors when he is fitted with bionic replacements—both legs, his right arm and left eye. With super-human power, he becomes a force to be reckoned with for the government as a secret agent for the Office of Scientific Intelligence." Production begins next year for a 2016 release. [Deadline] Susan Sarandon, Allison Janney, Stephen Amell, and Elijah Kelly are fine with "Whatever Makes You Happy." Cindy Chupack will direct the film about “about two suburban mothers who decide to visit their.

Hollywood has been trying to turn the popular ’70s TV show The Six Million Dollar Man into a feature film for decades. It’s taken so long, inflation has ballooned the idea of a six million dollar man into a six billion dollar man. And now, the team behind Lone Survivor is stepping up to the plate […]

While I wasn't the biggest fan of "Lone Survivor," I was impressed with the way they managed to turn it into a genuine hit. It's a pretty stark and brutal story, but Mark Wahlberg worked overtime to help sell the movie, and it's obvious that it came from a place of real passion for him. Peter Berg has such a strange filmography at this point that I've basically given up trying to guess what he'll do next. I always walk in hoping for him to put it all together as well as he does in films like "Friday Night Lights" or "The Rundown," because I think he's got the chops. I like that he's done some of everything at this point. Looking at how he shoots action in "Hancock," for example, or even in "Lone Survivor," he's got a sense for how to build a sequence. I just think he's...

The Six Million Dollar man has been of those properties that.s been subject to remake talk for literally decades. Thanks to technical advancements, sci-fi is always one of the hottest contenders for new age treatments and the .70s television series is prime fodder for Hollywood to screw with. Whether you.re too young to remember the original or not, it.s huge news to hear of The Six Million Dollar Man.s revival, especially when you learn of who could potentially play the lead and what the hell they.re going to rename it. In a recent post on Deadline, the site reports that Mark Wahlberg is planning on re-teaming with his Lone Survivor director, Peter Berg, to adapt The Million Dollar Man as a Weinstein Co. feature. In July, tracking-board.com claimed the star (Wahlberg) and the director (Berg) of Lone Survivor would re-team for a film based on The Six Million Dollar Man, aka The Bionic Man. Today, Deadline has confirmed that report. Berg will direct and Wahlberg is attached to star in the film about former astronaut Steve Austin who, after a horrific crash of an experimental plane, is saved by doctors when he is fitted with bionic replacements — both legs, his right arm and left eye. With super-human power, he becomes a force to be reckoned with for the government as a secret agent for the Office of Scientific Intelligence. When the 1970s television series The Six Million Dollar Man made its debut six million dollars was a lot of money to spend rebuilding a man with cybernetic technology. Now that it is 2014 Mark Wahlberg will be known as The Six Billion Dollar Man.

A new adaptation of the TV series of "The Six Million Dollar Man" has been in the works for years, but with inflation and technology changing since the series debuted in 1972, the project is called The Six Billion Dollar Man. Now the film has finally found some talent to make it happen. Deadline reports The Weinstein Company's genre label Dimension Films has set Mark Wahlberg to lead the film as former astronaut Steve Austin who suffers a horrific crash in an experimental plane, but ends up being saved by doctors with state-of-the-art bionic replacements on his body, thus turning him into a superhero of sorts. The movie will see Wahlberg reteaming with Peter Berg, who just worked with the actor on the brutal war drama Lone Survivor. The plan is for the film to shoot next year for a release in 2016. However, Wahlberg was just recently confirmed to star in Daddy's Home,...

The long-gestating big screen adaptation of classic TV series "The Six Million Dollar Man" finally got a shot in the (bionic) arm this week, with the announcement that Mark Wahlberg will be suiting up for the title role -- which has been tweaked to account for inflation.
Deadline reports that Wahlberg will star in "The Six Billion Dollar Man," and will reunite with his "Lone Survivor" director Peter Berg for the project. No writer is attached yet.
The film will follow astronaut Steve Austin (Wahlberg), who's injured in a plane crash and fitted with bionic body parts to save his life. His new limbs -- and eye -- give him super-human strength, and allow him to wreak havoc as an agent for a super-secret intelligence organization.
"The Six Million Dollar Man" was a hit show in the 1970s, and also featured a successful spin-off, "The Bionic Woman."

"Community" fans have clamored for six seasons and a movie for, well, almost six seasons, and while we can't promise there will be a movie any time soon, there will be a sixth season. We knew that already, but seeing this trailer makes it feel somehow more real. The threat of the Darkest Timeline was really real! But just like "The Six Million Dollar Man," they can rebuild "Community." They have the technology.
Actually, this "Community" trailer has everything! How can they fit so many flashbacks and pop culture references and sly digs at the show's ups and downs into a trailer that's less than two minutes? Well, that's the genius of Dan Harmon and his writers, as well as the charm of those lovable Greendale Community College losers and layabouts. We can't wait. Thank Yahoo!
The new season will launch in 2015.

"Community" season six will take place, thanks to an unlikely assist from Yahoo, but new episodes —arriving week by week, old school TV style— aren't expected to drop until the very end of the year at the earliest. Never fear! The show is giving something extra to the fans to hold them over until then. An epic teaser for season six has emerged: Running three minutes long, it's compelling despite spending a good chunk of time showing old clips. But the concept is clever, equating the resurrection of the show to building "The Six Million Dollar Man," and noting that on the web, 'Community' doesn't need ratings. Give it a spin below and tell us what you think.

"We can adapt it. We're Hollywood."
Looks like a big screen take of The Six Million Dollar Man may finally be slow-mo running into theaters fairly soon. Peter Berg is set to produce, and possibly direct, and it looks like he's looking to his Lone Survivor star Mark Wahlberg for the titular role. Wahlberg is rumored to be in the running to play Steve Austin, the character that audiences first fell in love with in the 1970s TV show.
Tracking Board reports that an adaptation of the show, which itself was based on the novel, Cyborg by Martin Caldin, has been in some form of development for nearly 20 years. Along the way, the likes of Kevin Smith, Jim Carrey, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Bryan Singer have been involved with potential adaptations. But with Berg onboard, and the star of Transformers: Age of Extinction potentially ready to take the project on, it...

Mark Wahlberg is riding high on box office success right now. Released just in the waning days of last month, Michael Bay's Transformers: Age of Extinction - in which Wahlberg stars as hero Cade Yeager - has already banked $174 million domestically and $575 million globally. While a lot of credit goes to the power of the Transformers brand and even Michael Bay's name, executives are still looking at Wahlberg now like he's a big 'ol bag of cash. It's not too hard to believe that other franchises are interesting in bringing him aboard - which is where this latest rumor comes from. The Tracking Board is now saying that Universal is looking to bring the 1970s television series The Six Million Dollar Man to the big screen and that Mark Wahlberg is being eyed to star. What's more, they claim that Peter Berg is both producing and possibly directing.

Over the years, there have been many attempts at turning the 1970s sci-fi TV series "The Six Million Dollar Man" into a film. At one point, Jim Carrey was attached to star in a comedic version for director Todd Phillips (The Hangover). Then in 2011, it was announced that Leonardo DiCaprio will play the lead with Bryan Singer (X-Men) directing. Nothing worked out and the film never left the development phase. But now comes word that Universal Pictures is once again working on the project and has attached the "Lone Survivor" team of Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg. "The Six Million Dollar Man" revolves around an astronaut whose body is rebuilt with cybernetic technology after a traumatic injury from an aircraft crash.

Over the past couple decades, there's been several attempts to adapt The Six Million Dollar Man into a feature-length film. As recently as 2011, Leonardo DiCaprio ("Titanic") was said to be in negotiations to star with Bryan Singer ("X-Men: Days of Future Past") set to direct, but that fell through. Also in 2011, screenwriter/director Kevin Smith ("Clerks") adapted his screenplay for The Six Million Dollar Man into a comic book. It was published by Dynamite Comics and was titled, "The Bionic Man." Now, tracking-board.com is claiming that the star and director of Lone Survivor will reteam for Universal's next attempt at making The Six Million Dollar Man film. "We’re hearing that Mark Wahlberg will star in Universal Pictures’ film remake of the 1970s sci-fi TV series The Six Million Dollar Man. Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg, off the back of Lone Survivor, may reunite for The Six Million Dollar Man...

Crikey, here's one that's been in development hell for a while. The path to getting a modern movie of The Six Million Dollar Man made - based on the TV series of the same - has been a troubled one, dating back to the mid-1990s. But the story of Steve Austin, being rebuilt with posh technology after a plane crash, might finally be moving forward again.
Universal Pictures has been developing the film, and The Tracking Board now reports that Mark Wahlberg is being linked with the project. Wahlberg, currently topping the Us box office with Transformers: Age Of Extinction, is being targeted to take the title role.
Peter Berg is currently on board as a producer, and may well direct the movie. That'd reunite him with Wahlberg, following their collaboration on Lone Survivor.
