Total box office in July reached new heights with $912m.
Just halfway through the summer holidays, a second Chinese blockbuster was born. Following the huge success of Dying To Survive, Hello Mr Billionaire raked in $127.3m from its three-day opening weekend in the period of Jul 23-29, not far from the former’s four-day debut on $190.1m.
Mainly thanks to these two strong titles, along with Skyscraper, Hidden Man and new opener Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings, the total box office in July reached new heights with $912m, representing a new record for the month of July of all time.

First of all, who is Detective Dee? For those who don’t know him already, Dee Renjie was a magistrate in the Tang dynasty, a guarantor of the Tang Code, highly revered by Empress Wu Zetian for his logical nature and honesty. Later in history, his life inspired the fictional character of a crime-solving magistrate called Judge Dee in some historical “whodunit” novels, virtually unknown to the West if it wasn’t for Dutch diplomat and writer Robert van Gulik who – at the beginning of 1900 – picked up an old copy of the novels in a second hand shop and decided to rewrite his own version of the Chinese Detective. And here we are, the modern version of the popular Detective Dee is a true product of Orientalism and yet very appealing and intriguing.

Magnificent, breath-taking spectacle. A glorious, gorgeous testament to mankind’s creativity. Looks really good in 3D. All of this and more can be used to describe The Great Wall of China. The Great Wall of filmmaker Zhang Yimou, however, is another thing entirely.
Following the intense furore surrounding the creation and marketing of The Great Wall, the film itself is here for all to see and judge. Erasure? White saviour trope: the movie? The Great Wall of China with a coat of whitewashing? As it turns out, not quite, but that’s not to say the movie is without its problems.
The great face of The Great Wall’s controversies is Matt Damon, cast as brooding mercenary William Garin.

When I think about China’s Song dynasty, the first thing that comes to mind is Matt Damon. You too, right? A movie like The Great Wall is just screaming for a “William” to save the day, because native warriors surely can’t fend for themselves (duh). A little whitewashing, a dash of CGI monsters and voilà! You’ve got yourself a generic slash-em-up atop, in front of and behind China’s most wondrous landmark. Director Yimou Zhang splatters rocky landscapes with colorful costumes and fiery explosions, but it’s not enough to salvage snooze-worthy drama whenever characters start to jabber. Did you expect something more than swift monster mutilation? I seriously hope not, you crazy loon.
Damon’s William is but a weary mercenary looking for some magical weapon known as “black powder.” The Chinese possess it, so he sets out with a party to “barter.” After a harsh spell of travel,...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
The Lego Batman Movie won the weekend as expected, but not with nearly as much money as I had predicted, not besting the opening of The Lego Movie as expected, but instead ending up with a reasonable and not so bad $53 million. Fifty Shades Darker proved that the audience for movies based on the popular books was still great enough for it to win Friday with $21 million (to Lego Batman’s $15 million) and end up second for the weekend with a strong $46.6 million. That was still almost $40 million less than the opening of the previous movie Fifty Shades of Grey, but the sequel also didn’t have the benefits of Valentine’s Day and a four-day holiday. Coming in...

Even a master swordsman isn’t safe when it comes to Derek Yee’s wild wuxia adventure, appropriately titled “Sword Master.” In the new martial arts extravaganza, a once-powerful swordsman turns his back on his own violent nature and formidable talents to live a quiet and humble life away from the world. It’s the kind of great and understandable pursuit that is, of course, totally thrown for a loop by outside forces.

Per the film’s official synopsis, “A powerful swordsman is haunted by the destructive impact his deadly talents have on others. Weary of the bloodshed and violence from the martial arts world, he banishes himself to the humble life of a vagrant, wandering the fringes of society. But his violent past refuses to let him go quietly.

The Great Wall movie with Matt Damon: awkward-accented British mercenary fights the Taotie in costly Chinese-American collaboration. 'The Great Wall' movie: Zhang Yimou-Matt Damon collaboration evidence that – for better or for worse – countries can work together In this divisive age, when countries are turning inward with a nationalist, xenophobic fervor, it's comforting to know that the United States and China, their relationship mercurial and wary, can work together and, in the spirit of cooperation and unity, make a terrible movie. A co-production between Legendary East (the Chinese arm of Burbank, California-based, Legendary Entertainment) and China Film Group, The Great Wall is reportedly the most expensive film ever shot in China, a nation with aspirations to make films that rival Hollywood in their scope and success. Hollywood is willing to help if it ultimately leads to the release of more of its films in the tightly controlled Chinese market,...

The swords, and the performers, fly fast and furious in Derek Yee’s Wuxia epic remake of 1977’s Death Duel. Produced and co-written by Hong Kong filmmaking legend Tsui Hark, Sword Master is a visually opulent if narratively confusing martial arts extravaganza that should well please the genre’s many fans, even if American audiences have unfortunately been denied the opportunity to see the film in 3D.
The convoluted storyline revolves around several principal characters, including Xiaofeng (Kenny Lin), the “Third Master” who, traumatized by his violent past, gives up his sword, spreads false rumors about his death and goes to...

Legendary Pictures' upcoming fantasy epic The Great Wall looks like a visually stunning and awesome film. I'm really excited about seeing it. The story was inspired by the construction of The Great Wall of China, and it involves an army of warriors battling giant creatures.
The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure.
Legendary Comics has announced that they will be releasing a prequel graphic novel that tells the events leading up to what the film entails. They also shared the cover for the comic created by Whilce Portacio.
The graphic novel was written by Arvid Nelson and artist Gian Fernando, and they offered the following synopsis in the press release:
What if an army was created to defend our world from an enemy so dangerous, its very existence must be kept a secret? Built...

"There are many things you have not seen." Like a 9 minute long trailer? This is pretty epic. An extended Chinese trailer has debuted for the Chinese epic The Great Wall, from director Zhang Yimou. The film is set to open in China this December, which is why this seems like a massive marketing push even though it doesn't open in the Us until February. This features footage from other trailers at the opening and closing, and spends six minutes in the middle introducing the five different main Chinese characters. Matt Damon stars as one of the few white dudes; also starring Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau, Tian Jing, Eddie Peng, Numan Acar, Han Lu, Kenny Lin, Zhang Hanyu. This looks colorful and entertaining. Here's the new extended 9-minute Chinese trailer for Zhang Yimou's The Great Wall, from YouTube: You can still see the first teaser trailer for Yimou's The Great Wall here,...

A 9 minute Chinese trailer has been released for Matt Damon's upcoming fantasy action film The Great Wall. I don't recall ever seeing a 9 minute trailer before! It's obviously loaded with tons of new footage, and this movie looks like it's going to be a crazy fun epic! The visuals of this film look freakin' stunning!
The trailer spends a good amount of time introducing us to five of the main Chinese characters in the film. I have no idea what the trailer is saying, but I still enjoyed watching it.

Nearly 40 years after Chor Yuen launched his acting career in the Shaw Brothers classic Death Duel, director Derek Yee returns to Gu Long’s source novel for a ravishing new adaptation. With Tsui Hark producing and action choreography from Yuen Bun and Dion Lin, Sword Master is a shamelessly old-fashioned swordplay romance that pays homage to the legacy of studio-bound wuxia dramas, while simultaneously embracing cutting-edge new technology. CGI backdrops and immersive 3D photography combine seamlessly with balletic wirework and an age-old story of duty and heroism that should delight audiences around the world. Yee casts Kenny Lin Gengxin in the role that made him a star back in 1977, as Third Master Hsiao Feng, proclaimed throughout the land as the greatest living swordsman....

While it sometimes feels stiff and overlong, Hong Kong war drama The Taking of Tiger Mountain, the latest from essential action director Tsui Hark (Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame), also proves disarmingly entertaining thanks to a Tsui specialty: spectacular fight scenes. Based on Tracks in the Snowy Forest, Qu Bo's novel about an isolated People's Liberation Army unit's grueling battles with Kuomintang soldiers and local warlords in post-wwii Northern China, the film can feel like a never-ending series of double-crosses and reversals of fortune. But the plot is simple: Selfless heroes like Shao Jinbao (Kenny Lin), a stoic army captain, try to depose flamboyant villains like the greedy bandit Hawk (Tony Leung Ka-fai in a horrendo...
