On the last Empire Podcast of the year, we have something of a The Prestige reunion, which is nice. First, Christian Bale, star of The Pale Blue Eye, talks to Chris Hewitt about being mistaken for Gareth Bale, and his experiences working with directors on multiple occasions, including Adam McKay, Scott Cooper, and Terrence Malick. Then Hugh Jackman, Golden Globe-nominated star of The Son (which opens here in February), talks to Amon Warmann about his experiences on that movie, working with Anthony Hopkins for a day, and why he's about to play Wolverine again in Deadpool 3. Then, Kate Hudson and Jessica Henwick, neither of whom were in The Prestige, more than make up for it by having a freewheeling and very funny chat with Chris about their new movie Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, life with an assistant, British sitcoms, and John Carpenter and Kurt Russell.

Doha, Nov 30 (Ians) Wales coach Robert Page insisted he was proud of his players despite a 3-0 defeat to England on Tuesday night, which sent them home from their first World Cup in 64 years with two defeats and a draw.
Wales were never really in the game that England won with two goals from Marcus Rashford and one from Phil Foden to give Page’s men a disappointing end.
“It’s an amazing performance from that group to get here,” Page said, reports Xinhua.
“I told everyone including the staff what an achievement it was to get here and the fans were amazing. We are frustrated that maybe we didn’t do all that we wanted, but we have had a taste of it and we want to experience it again,” said the coach.
Page admitted he was frustrated that England’s quick-fire goals undid his side’s good defensive work from the first half.

Good Morning Britain has aired Michael Sheen’s rousing speech to the Wales squad ahead of their match against England.
Wales will be playing England on Tuesday night (29 November) in the group stages of the World Cup for the first-ever home nations clash at the tournament.
On Tuesday’s episode of Gmb, the programme broadcasted footage of Sheen’s address to the Welsh squad from earlier this year.
In September, the Damned United star gave an impassioned speech to the football team during a visit to their training facility.
Sheen’s visit followed after his impromptu monologue on Sky’s A League of their Own went viral. Host Romesh Ranganathan had asked the actor to improvise the sort of message he would give to the Wales squad.
Wales manager Rob Page praised the on-air moment and said that the Wales squad would like to meet Sheen in person.

The Welsh national anthem has become a talking point around the world since Wales’s team began competing in their first World Cup since 1958.
Wales’s stirring anthem is called “Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau”, which translates to “Old Land of My Fathers” in English.
When the Welsh team, headed up by captain Gareth Bale, and 3,000 Welsh supporters belted out the anthem at the country’s opening match against USA on Monday 21 November, it gave goosebumps to footballs fans around the globe.
Singer-songwriter Billy Bragg tweeted at the time: “Well Wales have won the national anthem singing contest. Their players looked proud to belt out their anthem while the US team looked faintly embarrassed to be singing in public.”
This year marks the first time the anthem has been sung at the tournament. The last time Wales were at a World Cup, they sang “God Save the Queen”.

Doha (Qatar), Nov 25 (Ians) Iran received a dramatic late boost to their Qatar 2022 hopes after goals from Rouzbeh Chesmi and Ramin Rezaeian in the 98th and 101st minute respectively, secured a historic 2-0 victory over ten-man Wales at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium here on Friday.
French football coach and former professional player Robert Pires, who played for clubs like Metz and Marseille prior to his time with Arsenal where he won two Fa Cups, was puzzled about Gareth Bale not being aggressive enough around the penalty area.
“I think the Wales players were without energy which was strange. Normally, this guy (Gareth Bale), needs to be in the box area because he’s a very good finisher, he can score goals. But I don’t understand — he was very far away from the box,” Pires said during the programme on Viacom18 Sports’ FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 presentation.

Iran scored twice deep into stoppage time to stay in the World Cup and spoil Gareth Bale’s record 110th cap for his country.
A long-range effort by Cheshmi in the eight minutes into added time gave Iran the lead while Rezaeian coolly made it 2-0, three minutes from the second goal.
The turning point of the match turned out to be and a disastrous one for Wales turned out to be the sending off of goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, who got the yellow card upon video review in the 88th minute.
Hennessey, who has over 100 caps for his country was sent off for reckless challenge on Mehdi Taremi far outside the penalty area with his right leg high up.
He became the third goalkeeper in the history of the World Cup to have received a red card and the first player to see the red card at the current edition.

Update (5 a.m. Pst): Iran’s players have poignantly refused to sing their national anthem as the nation’s World Cup opener against England kicks off.
Some in the crowd appeared to be jeering during the anthem, which came to the backdrop of protests over the death of Iranian Mahsa Amini in custody in September and on the day that two prominent Iranian actresses were arrested. The majority of the backroom staff also appeared to be refusing to sing.

Madrid, Nov 9 (Ians) A quick look at Group B implies that England should be the clear favourites to breeze through into the last-16 of the FIFA World Cup, and a possible three straight wins will allow Gareth Southgate’s side to gain confidence ahead of the knockout rounds.
However, any England fan will tell you it’s rarely as simple as that, with memories of their struggles in a group comprised of the United States, Algeria and Slovenia in 2010 coming to mind, and a look at other teams in the group also suggests things may not be as straightforward as they seem.
On paper, England have a better squad and record than Wales, the United States and Iran. They qualified for Qatar with no real problems and travel as the European Championship runners-up.
Southgate will build his team around striker and captain Harry Kane, and midfielders Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.

London, March 8 (Ians) Manchester United ended Manchester City's record breaking 21-game winning run on Sunday when they won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
A second-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandez and a 50th minute goal from left-back Luke Shaw on Sunday gave United a win that still leaves them 11 points behind their neighbors, but will give them local bragging rights and confidence for the rest of the season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side defended magnificently and were lethal on the break, with Anthony Martial in excellent form in their win, and the only negative for Solskjaer was an ankle injury that forced Marcus Rashford off midway through the second half, Xinhua news agency reports.
Daniel Amartey's header two minutes from time had momentarily lifted Leicester City into second place ahead of United after a 2-1 win away to Brighton on Saturday night.

YouTube’s first European original “Jack Whitehall: Training Days” is from the producers of “Carpool Karaoke,” and will look to take some of the production smarts of that series to the world of soccer, the host told Variety.
“The genesis of the idea was trying to make ‘Carpool Karaoke’ but for football,” Whitehall said. “Doing it in a World Cup year meant that we could also try to create the perfect format to get everyone excited for the biggest sporting event on the planet.”
Comedian and actor Whitehall meets some of the biggest names from the beautiful game in the ad-supported show, including Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, and Colombian star Radamel Falcao (pictured). James Corden’s Fulwell 73 is on production duty.
The host deliberately took the stars out of their comfort zone and the stunts include sneaking England player Kyle Walker onto Simon Cowell’s “Britain’s Got Talent.

To celebrate the Home Entertainment release of the rousing feature-documentary Don’T Take Me Home, we have 2 Blu-ray copies to giveaway.
An inspiring documentary from Welsh filmmaker Jonny Owen (I Believe In Miracles) following Wales’ remarkable journey to the final stages of the 2016 European Championships.
For the last 60 years Wales have tried and failed to qualify for a major football tournament. Having gone through the grief of previous manager Gary Speed’s tragic death, heavy defeats, and positioned as a tiny country team with no pedigree, all bets were off for how the underdogs would perform.
Led by star player Gareth Bale, the team quickly became the outside favourites, dazzling millions of viewers. There’s an ancient Welsh saying, “Yma o Hyd” which translates as, “we’re still here” – a defiantly apt statement from the smallest country in the history of the game getting to a major tournaments semi finals.

Money in the world of football has become a big talking point within the game. Be it transfer fees, ticket prices, imaging and TV rights, or even the odd FIFA related bribing scandal, the financial element of the game will now always be questioned. With figures nearly exceeding £100,000,000 for a single player it’s beginning to feel that clubs can demand stupid money for any player within their squad. You only have to look at players like Dwight Gayle, Jake Livermore, and Robert Snodgrass who are being bought for £10 million plus. I mean, Crystal Palace bought Jeffery Schlupp for £12 million! Am I missing something here? It’s like money doesn’t have any value within the game anymore.
Of course, there are some transfers that warrant clubs splashing out large amounts of money to get their man. Players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez, and Neymar to name a few.

A brisk documentary follows the Welsh football team from 2012 to their incredible European Championships performance four years later
Were it not for the Premier League-winning exploits of Leicester City, the Welsh national football team’s performance in the European Championships would have unquestionably been last year’s great sporting underdog story – remarkable not only because of Wales’s minnow status in international football (this was their first tournament appearance since the 1958 World Cup), but also because it came just five years after the team lost their manager Gary Speed, who took his own life. Jonny Owen’s film takes up the story as new manager Chris Coleman is put in charge in 2012 and follows it all the way through to the Euros and ultimately Wales’s semi-final defeat to eventual winners Portugal, with Coleman, the team’s star player, Gareth Bale, and some of the fans who went along for...

Luis Suárez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are, unsurprisingly, among the highest-ranked players in FIFA 17, but for the first time in seven years, the latter Barcelona superstar is no longer the pick of the bunch.

Between them, Barcelona playermakers Suárez and Neymar, along with German shot-stopper Manuel Neuer, each hold a value of 92. You’ll be able to find the full breakdown over on EA’s official site.
There’s plenty to decipher, too, with cover star Marco Reus checking in with 88 stat value.

2. Lionel Messi – 93 (Barcelona)
3. Neymar – 92 (Barcelona)
