Broadcasting standards watchdog Ofcom has revealed the 10 most complained about TV moments of 2022.
Topping the ranking was Love Island, which received 2,630 complaints over “alleged misogynistic bullying” in its 17 July episode.
I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! came in second, with 1,890 people objecting to the inclusion of disgraced Tory MP Matt Hancock in the series.
Jordan Gray’s appearance on Friday Night Live prompted the third-highest number of complaints, while Love Island appeared again in the fourth spot, thanks to “alleged misogynistic and bullying behaviour by some contestants in the villa”.
The data does not include complaints lodged against programmes aired on the BBC. Complaints against the BBC are made directly to the broadcaster.
In an article shared on its website, Ofcom explained: “Over the year, we received 36,543 complaints about over 9,500 issues, and completed 74 broadcast standards investigations. We found in 66 of these cases that our rules had been broken.

Complaints both berating and defending Matt Hancock and his participation in I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! dominate UK regulator Ofcom’s top-10 list of most complained about TV incidents of the year.
Just shy of 2,000 complainants “objected to the inclusion” of the former Health Secretary in the series, drawing the second highest number of complaints, while 627 people objected to “bullying behavior” against him, which came eighth on the list.
Hancock’s double appearance in the annual complaints rundown demonstrates the way in which the politician, who is blamed by many for multiple Covid-19 mishaps and was outed for having an affair while breaking his own Covid guidance, divided the nation.
As the ITV entertainment series wore on, his popularity grew amid vitriol from fellow contestants such as Boy George, and Hancock ended up reaching the final and coming third.

All four judges opted to save Rainford after both couples performed their routines again, with Anton Du Beke calling the result “terrible”.
Speaking about her time on the show, Adams said: “This has been the best thing I have ever done in my life and I will carry it to my grave, and it has been an absolute pleasure working with you [Karen Hauer] and learning about so much that will go into my own stuff, in my own work. Dwayne Johnson has hit out at Black Adam’s critics in a post celebrating the film’s commercial success.
The film, in which Johnson play the DC antihero, was mauled by reviewers in the week before the film’s release on Friday (21 October).
Consequently, Black Adam has a 41 per cent critic score on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, which at the time of writing was based on 209 reviews.
However, film fans have rated it highly, meaning the film currently has an impressive audience score of 90 per cent.
Johnson celebrated this feat on Twitter, writing: “This phenomenal 90 Audience Score for #BlackAdam is so gratifying for so many reasons. Thank You for all so much for all the love and support.”
Seemingly referencing the film’s negative reviews, the Hollywood star added: “In the end, the only thing that matters to me is sending the people home happy. And that’s what I’ll always fight for.

Strictly Come Dancing kicked off its celebrations for the BBC’s centenary with the show’s “most ambitious group number”.
Saturday (22 October) night’s episode of the show was a BBC-themed special, with the remaining dancers performing to songs and theme tunes inspired by the BBC’s biggest shows over the years.
Things began with a routine by the professional dancer which started with BBC News presenter Huw Edwards explaining how Strictly was “taking over the BBC”.
“But some of us are too busy to dance,” Edwards explained. “We have some very serious work to do. Do you know what this is? This was named after me. It’s a Huw-kulele.”
The presenter was then joined by dancers Jowita PryzstaÅ. and Giovanni Pernice, while the hosts at BBC Breakfast watched on in confusion.
The professional dancers popped up in a number of BBC shows, including EastEnders, Masterchef and Antiques Roadshow.

HBO has shared its “disappointment” after the season finale of House of the Dragon leaked early.
The fantasy series, which is a precursor to Game of Thrones, airs its final episode of season one on Sunday (23 October) night.
However, on Friday (21 October), the episode leaked online two days early on illegal download websites. The Independent will not be posting spoilers.
In a statement, HBO claimed that the episode appeared to have been shared by a distribution partner in Europe, the Middle East or Africa.
“We are aware that the tenth episode of House of the Dragon has been posted on illegal torrent sites,” the broadcaster said (via Variety).
“HBO is aggressively monitoring and pulling these copies from the internet. We’re disappointed that this unlawful action has disrupted the viewing experience for loyal fans of the show, who will get to see a pristine version of the episode when it premieres Sunday.

As a survivor of Septic Man‘s sewer-sludge yuckiness, I saw Bite‘s disgusting reputation not as a warning, but as an invitation. What’s a little gross-out body horror capable of, really? Sure, Fantasia Festival attendees reported that Chad Archibald’s metamorphosis tale caused viewers to “faint, puke, and need medical attention,” but after watching it myself, I question the constitution of said fainters. Maybe it’s just because I’ve witnessed the worst of the worse (an occupational hazard), or because I’ve been blessed with my father’s iron gullet, but Bite never sent me reaching for a barf bag. While this might disappoint true masochists, Bite doesn’t need perverse gimmicks to win over horror fans – there’s a story worth watching all in itself, even if it won’t make you vomit.

It may be a bit rough around the edges, but there’s a lot to enjoy about director Chad Archibald’s Bite. In a day and age when most genre fans feel like they’ve seen just about everything, his take on body horror is boldly refreshing and offers up a few unexpected twists that I genuinely appreciated. Bite also boasts some of the most impressive production design and practical special effects I’ve seen on the indie level in some time, and it is anchored by an effectively unnerving performance by up-and-coming actress Elma Begovic.
Bite follows reluctant bride-to-be Casey (Begovic) to the tropics for a bachelorette weekend with a few of her gal pals (Annette Wozniak, Denise Yuen). Bite is directed by Chad Archibald, written by Jayme Laforest, and produced by Chad Archibald, Cody Calahan, and Christopher Giroux. The film stars Elma Begovic, Annette Wozniak, Denise Yuen, Jordan Gray, Lawrence Denkers, Barry Birnberg, Daniel Klimitz, Tianna Nori, and Caroline Palmer.
At a time when horror has become very experimental, it is refreshing to see a movie like Bite, which doesn't try to be cute, doesn't try to be clever, and doesn't try to be funny, but instead simply tries to be as good a horror film as it can be. While Bite might not be a perfect movie, nobody who calls themselves a horror fan will have any excuse not to enjoy it.

Chad Archibald has been making quiet a name for himself in genre cinema (and in my movie collection) over the past few years, whether it’s producing awesome action movies like Bounty Hunters, starring WWE’s Trish Stratus; or more horrific fare like Hellmouth and the fantastic Antisocial. More recently Archibald has also directed a number of horror hits, including last years Frightfest film The Drownsman and this years cause célèbre, Bite. Which has, if you believe the hype, been causing a furore at screenings around the world, with walkouts and vomiting amongst other audience afflictions…
Bite tells the story of bride-to-be Casey, while on her hen party getaway to exotic Costa Rica, gets a seemingly harmless bite from an unknown insect while bathing in an idyllic jungle pool.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Black Fawn Films. Director: Chad Archibald. Writers: Jayme Laforest, Chad Archibald. Cast: Elma Begovic, Annette Wozniak, Jordan Gray, Denise Yuen. Director Chad Archibald (The Drownsman) is guaranteed to make your skin crawl in his icky entertaining horror film, Bite! What begins as a seemingly banal scenario with stereotypical females on a bachelorette party vacation, turns out to be a gripping grim tale of transformation, betrayal and revenge. Archibald is clever in setting his audience up with a potential snore fest, then creeping in to deliver a strong story with good characters and a healthy dose of gooey gore. Somewhat reminiscent of Cronenberg's The Fly (1986), though revolving around infection not experiment, this film belongs inside the category of “body horror.” That said, it nearly crosses over into a creature-feature, and dips its feet into the realm of horror comedy. Whatever you want to call it,...
