Netflix has hired director Nils Boekamp to oversee documentary for the German-speaking market out of Berlin, as the streaming giant’s German ambitions gather pace.
A spokesperson confirmed to Variety that Boekamp has joined the streaming giant, and will oversee documentary efforts for the German-speaking Dach region, which includes Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Boekamp is a well-respected director who most recently served as creative director of Berlin-based production company Boekamp & Kriegsheim, which he ran with Felix Kriegsheim.
His directing and producing credits include the feature doc “The Worst Thing”, Arte doc series “1968mm,” feature doc “Green Gap” and Lgbt history-focused drama series “Act Up.”
Variety understands that Boekamp is currently spending a period of time working out of the London office, where former BBC executive Kate Townsend oversees the documentary division.
His appointment comes as Netflix looks to grow aggressively out of Europe, filling out new offices in both Berlin and Paris.

Kulig plays Maja who sings like a bird but has a drinking problem. When she sings she’s the absolute center of attention, but otherwise, she’s adrift, at a crossroads where every direction looks like a dead end. The Returned series 2 arrives on More4 in the UK tonight, Friday the 16th of October. We spoke to its creators and cast…
Fabrice Gobert, the French creator of supernatural drama The Returned, speaks good English. An inevitability of using a second language though, is the odd grammatical slip. One such slip made by Gobert at the press launch for The Returned series two is too perfect to let pass by. A pitfall of writing fantasy TV, Gobert said, is that “you can lost yourself”.
Add a capital letter to the ‘l’ word, and you can say that again.
During its enviably long run, Lost became both the high and low benchmark for atmospheric, existentially fraught TV dramas. Its early seasons gripped viewers, but its later runs frustrated many by failing to achieve the perfect ratio of mysteries to answers. That’s the tricky challenge The Returned is facing in series two.

Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. People use these term “zombie” when describing “The Returned,” but they aren’t like what we see from George Romero and in “The Walking Dead.” Can you tell our readers what makes your “zombies” different from what audiences are used to seeing?

The Returned (Les Revenants) originally aired in France on Canal Plus last fall. Since then, the UK’s Channel 4 broadcast the first series, renamed Rebound, drawing an average 1.5 million viewers each week. A second season of eight episodes goes into production in France in early 2014. Zodiak is handling international and has sold all U.S. rights on the first season to Music Box Films for a VOD/DVD release in January. This will follow an as-yet undisclosed U.S. TV debut in October. Created by Fabrice Gobert and produced by Caroline Benjo, Jimmy Desmarais and Carole Scotta of Haut et Court, the show centers on a group of people in a small Alpine village who find themselves in a state of confusion, trying to return to their homes.
