Jonathan Bailey was so blown away by “Heartstopper” that he just knew he had to be on the show.
“Like so many people, I watched the first [season] and thought it was one of the biggest, most beautiful gifts to so many people, and I wish I had that growing up,” the “Fellow Travelers” and “Bridgerton” star told me at the Met Gala Monday night.
It was announced in late April that Bailey will make a cameo appearance as Jack Maddox, an Instagram-famous classicist and celebrity crush of Charlie (Joe Locke). “I had a mutual friend who knows [executive producer Patrick Walters] and I just said, ‘If there’s anything I could do to help and be a part of that story,’” Bailey recalled.
He said that the series, based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novel series of the same name, “really has changed the way people could grow and communicate around who they are.

Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.
The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.
Clint Worthington (Roger Ebert) noted: “Marsan’s energy as Adams is decidedly different from Paul Giamatti’s in Ellis’ original 2008 miniseries—“Franklin” feels...

Liev Schreiber is getting candid about what he’s learned about fame over the years, saying that it alone won’t make people truly happy.
The Emmy-nominated actor shared in an interview with Haute Living magazine, published online Thursday, that after decades in the entertainment industry, he realized the importance of working on projects that he’s actually passionate about.
“I work for hire, as they say, and like to make money,” he explained. “I have a growing family. The older I get, the more I think I want it to matter when I work. Of course, it doesn’t always — in fact, it rarely does — but it’s nice when it does, when one of your jobs means something to people. That feels good, like the job does what it was supposed to do in the beginning, which is to connect you to people.”

Speaking to press ahead of the world premiere screening of the series at Canneseries on Wednesday evening, the actor said the Apple TV+ period drama is a great reminder of “how fragile democracy is and how generous France was.”
The series was entirely filmed in France, and Douglas spoke about returning to the country to launch the show before it’s bow on Apple TV+ on April 12. “It’s coals to Newcastle – this is where our whole project is based: It is the story of Benjamin Franklin coming to France to save America.”

Ron Nyswaner will soon be traveling to New York to reunite with his Writers Guild of America East fellows for a grand occasion. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter, producer and showrunner has been selected to receive the Walter Bernstein Award at the 76th Writers Guild Awards at New York’s Edison Ballroom on April 14.
The honor — named after the late screenwriter who was blacklisted for his political views only to persevere and get his career back on track with such credits as Fail-Safe, Semi-Tough and Yanks — is presented to writers “who have demonstrated with creativity, grace and bravery a willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity,” per the organization.
Nyswaner has been doing that for pretty much his entire career. A prime example is Jonathan Demme’s 1993 film Philadelphia. Penned by Nyswaner, the Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington-starrer was the first major Hollywood film to dramatize the real-world...

When a World War II drama series about airmen features the likes of Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan and Callum Turner, it’s reasonable to presume that one of them would be playing the story’s quintessential hotshot pilot. Instead, that honor belongs to Nate Mann, who portrays Lieutenant Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal, one of the most decorated real-life B-17 pilots to serve in WWII, on Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air. Rosie had already established a successful career as a lawyer in New York until the attack on Pearl Harbor eventually led him to Laredo Air Force Base, where he developed his crack piloting skills.
Knowing full well the significance of Rosenthal both on the screen and in real life, Mann refused to gloss over the details of the B-17 and the many responsibilities that a bomber pilot has before, during and after a flight. So he took the words...

The world of Ray Donovan is expanding. Paramount+ has ordered a spin-off series loosely based on the Showtime series titled The Donovans. Guy Ritchie is behind the new 10-episode drama, which will follow two generations of gangsters, their businesses, their complex relationships, and the man they call to fix their problems.
After seven seasons, Ray Donovan was cancelled on Showtime four years ago, but viewers saw more of Ray in a wrap-up film in January 2022. It's not yet known if that show's star, Liev Schreiber, will somehow be part of the new series.

The inevitable M&a question came toward the end of Paramount Global’s hourlong conference call with Wall Street analysts on Wednesday — a session that undoubtedly would have been more contentious for Paramount leaders if they hadn’t started out by serving up sacrifices for the greater good of free cash flow and profit.
Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish waved off the inquiry from Bank of America Merrill Lynch media analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich about the tidal wave of media speculation about suitors coming (and going) for the company with a breezy “We’re always looking for ways to create shareholder value.” But it was clear from the earlier commentary and business updates from Bakish and chief financial officer Naveen Chopra that they are charting a course for this year and next to take streamer Paramount+ to the promised land of profitability and keeps the company entact as a standalone entity.

Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish derided a planned streaming venture backed by Disney, Fox Corp. and Warner Bros. Discovery for having “only a subset of sports.”
In his first public comments since the announcement of the service, which does not include any Paramount or NBCUniversal properties, Bakish noted several gaps it will have.
“There’s still a lot we don’t know about this service, things like price, packaging, consumer appetite,” he said on Paramount’s fourth-quarter earnings call. “To the consumer point, for the true sports fan, this product only has a subset of sports. It’s missing half the NFL, a lot of college, has virtually no soccer or golf, etc. It’s hard to believe that’s ideal, especially at the price points that have been speculated.”

After the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year, and with every streaming service now laser-focused on profitability, Hollywood has been keeping a close watch on efforts to adjust content spend, either reducing spend overall, or finding ways to change the cost structure.
At Paramount, reducing that programming spend has now become a top corporate priority, according to CEO Bob Bakish and CFO Naveen Chopra, speaking on the company’s earnings call Wednesday.
“As we move into 2024, we’re focused on producing content more efficiently and magnifying the impact of our slate,” Bakish told analysts.
“2023 presented an opportunity to experiment with alternative lower-cost entertainment programming across our linear networks,” Chopra added, referencing the moves made by the company at CBS and its other networks during the strikes. “The performance we saw gives us confidence we can continue to reduce cost going forward while also delivering a consistent volume of high quality content.

Paramount Global expects to take a $1 billion charge in the current quarter due to ongoing programming shifts and the layoffs it announced earlier this month.
CFO Naveen Chopra delivered that outlook during the company’s fourth quarter earnings call with Wall Street analysts. The company is “making a variety of important changes to our global workforce and content strategy,” he said. “These moves reflect decisions we’ve made to transition our business and enhance our future value proposition. They will also result in a programming and restructuring charge in Q1, which we currently expect to be approximately $1 billion.”
The company has been increasingly “optimizing and sharing” programming across streaming and linear TV, Chopra noted. “We’re also focused on using the collective power of Paramount Global to unlock synergies more broadly. This mindset enables headcount cost reduction, including the action we announced earlier this month.”

The Donovans, a new series inspired by the Showtime hit Ray Donovan, has been set at Paramount+, with Guy Ritchie attached to direct and executive produce. Renowned Irish screenwriter, producer, and novelist Ronan Bennett will write all ten episodes. “With the most powerful clients in Europe, The Donovans will see family fortunes and reputations at risk,” according to the network. “Odd alliances unfold, and betrayal around every corner; and while the family might be London’s most elite fixers today, the nature of their business means there is no guarantee what’s in store tomorrow. As we prepare for the anticipated release of Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare in theaters on April 19, the Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels director is ready to return to television for a Ray Donovan spin-off series. Loosely based on the hit Showtime series starring Liev Schreiber, The Donovans extends the show’s “fixer” premise to an elite family unit.
Here’s the official description for The Donovans:
