There was a moment in Japanese culture when writers and filmmakers began to update centuries-old fears so that they could still be effective storytelling tools in the modern world. One of the best examples of this is how extremely popular stories like Ringu and Parasite Eve began re-interpreting the cyclical nature of curses as pseudo-scientific “infections,” with this new take on J-Horror even making its way over to the world of video games in titles like Resident Evil (a sci-fi deconstruction of a classic haunted house yarn).
However, there is one survival horror game that is rarely brought up during discussions about interactive J-Horror despite being part of a franchise that helped to popularize Japanese genre cinema around the world. Naturally, that game is the Nintendo Wii exclusive Ju-On: The Grudge, a self-professed haunted house simulator that was mostly forgotten by horror fans and gamers alike despite being a legitimately...

Horror is iterative, but it just as regularly moves through the same cycles decade after decade, ostensibly breaking new ground, when in reality, the genre is simply doing what is has always done. Today's horror landscape, for as remarkable and diverse as it is, is principally a landscape of legacy sequels. The horror of yesterday is new again, and commonly, old faces and names are dredged up to headline the latest nostalgic bloodbath. Reasonably, the present iteration could be decried as Hollywood's lack of originality, though seasoned horror veterans have seen this cycle before.
The early aughts were replete with imported horrors. Hollywood studios regularly borrowed transnational scares, repackaged them, and presented them as the next big thing. They were successful, too. Gore Verbinski's "The Ring," a remake of Hideo Nakata's "Ring," grossed nearly $250 million when released in 2002. Hollywood studios also remade the likes of "A Tale of Two Sisters,...

Although Netflix is still working its way around the Asian movies in its catalog, in terms of series the quality is quite high, with a quality in terms of production values of many of them being comparable, if not better with feature films. “Sanctuary”, which takes a look at the world of sumo, is definitely one of those films.

The protagonist of the series is Kiyoshi Oze, a young delinquent from a broken family, which was destroyed when his father's debts forced him to close the shop, sending him into a being a traffic light attendant, and his wife, who obviously underwent some sort of shock, into prostituting. Kiyoshi was a judo champion at a teenager, but now finds himself bullying his way around life, until a proposition from Ensho, the owner of a sumo stable and the promise for...

Kiyoshi Oze, aka Enno, the most hot-headed sumo wrestler, has been presented to us in a Netflix original Japanese sports comedy, Sanctuary. Kiyoshi Oze, a young lad from Fukoaka, won the Sumo Jonokuchi category and has joined Okayata Ensho’s stable to battle in the forthcoming tournaments. While Enno had impressive talent in wrestling, he wasn’t a big fan of consistent practice. His arrogant personality was another factor that was hurting his chances of success. However, over time and after a few tournament victories, Enno realized that only winning the tournaments wasn’t necessary, as he would also have to win the hearts of his spectators as well. Although Enno’s unusual and intimidating persona was entertaining to watch on television, the series aimed to show a shift in Enno’s behavior during his career as a wrestler, conveying the message that all it takes to be an ideal...

Debt, violence, family dysfunction…
Pushed to the brink, delinquent Kiyoshi Oze (Wataru Ichinose) takes on the world of sumo as a wrestler under the name “Enno” in this bold and intense human drama.
While sumo is known across the globe as a part of traditional Japanese culture and a religious ritual passed down for over 1,500 years, the world of this sport remains veiled in secrecy. The “dohyo,” the ring where the sumo matches are fought, is truly a “sanctuary” built on the foundation of this unusual world.
Unmotivated to train, often skipping practice and defying his more experienced seniors, Oze is branded as a hopeless case, but he gradually delves deeper into the world of sumo. This human drama depicts Oze and the young people surrounding the world of sumo as they struggle to find their way in life, including Shimizu (Shota Sometani), who loves the sport but is not blessed with an ideal physique,...

Benoit Paire won his first tennis title since 2019 after beating Yuta Shimizu in the Puerto Vallarta Open final.
Paire bounced back from a set down to defeat Shimizu and the victory marked a momentous moment for the French player following a period of instability in his professional career.
In June 2022, Paire announced that he would take a break from tennis indefinitely. The revelation came following poor form in the 2022 season and the 33-year-old posted an honest and heartfelt Instagram post to share his break from the game.
"I'm having a disastrous start to the season, I'm not playing my best tennis, I'm not at my best mentally but it's Roland Garros and it's my favorite tournament where something magical can happen. Let's have an incredible time whole!! I don't promise you the best tennis match of your life, but let's set this court on fire and love it!!!"

Many an older film discovery will inspire revelations of “She’s in this?” — but none quite like the 1996 indie “Foxfire.” A cult classic beloved by queer audiences, “Foxfire” features early performances not only from Angelina Jolie, but singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis and queer icon and model Jenny Shimizu. It is also, famously (for those who care about these kinds of things), the project that introduced Jolie and Shimizu, who had a serious relationship throughout the late ’90s.
Based on a novel by Joyce Carol Oates, “Foxfire” follows five high school girls who take revenge on an abusive teacher, unwittingly forming a misfit crew of renegade feminists. They are radicalized by a hitchhiking firebrand who appears out of thin air, played by a young Jolie in motorcycle boots and an androgynous messy bob. Though she had done a few films prior, “Foxfire” established the magnetic bad girl type (and forever queer thirst...

"One Piece" is a sprawling franchise of nearly 25 years, kicking off with Eiichiro Oda's Weekly Shōnen Jump manga in July 1997 before getting a rollicking anime adaptation from Toei Animation. The manga series is known for breaking the World Guinness Record for most printed comic series by one author. "One Piece" follows the Straw Hat gang, lead by Monkey D. Luffy (Colleen Clinkenbeard), whose consumption of a Devil Fruit granted him awesome stretchy powers. Luffy is on a long quest to find the legendary One Piece treasure and claim the King of the Pirates throne.
Now "One Piece" is sailing toward its final arc just when you thought the voyage could go on forever in the endless sea. Commemorating the 1000th anime episode and sending signals of the end is another one of its theatrically released features, "One Piece Film: Red."

One of the most accomplished and acclaimed masters of modern J-Horror, director Takashi Shimizu has been on the cutting edge of the genre’s popularity since he first emerged with his celebrated “Ju-On” entries that initially launched the movement in the early 2000s. Keeping his hand in the genre pretty consistent in the times since, among his most recent contributions is a loosely-connected trilogy of films known as the Village of Terror series that started with Howling Village, continued with Suicide Forest Village and now concludes with the most recent entry “Ox-Head Village” which celebrates its North American premiere at the New York Asian Film Festival.
