The Avett Brothers took to Jimmy Kimmel Live! — virtually — to perform new track “Victory” in a field of lush sunflowers. The song comes off of their new EP, The Third Gleam, out Friday on Loma Vista Recordings.
Siblings Scott and Seth Avett strummed the song while ambling in a field, cicadas providing some extra instrumentation: “I don’t write ’cause I don’t think/I don’t have a need to speak/I don’t see the bright side quite as clear,” sings Scott Avett over delicate, finger-picked guitars. “Accolades...

“It’s all an elaborate hoax.” The reported final words of film critic Roger Ebert frame a haunting new song by Clem Snide, the artistic alias of songwriter Eef Barzelay. The track is the first release off an upcoming album by Clem Snide, Forever Just Beyond, produced by the Avett Brothers’ Scott Avett.
Avett lends harmony vocals to “Roger Ebert,” a pretty, probing ballad that contemplates the mysteries of life. It’s a heavy topic, to be sure, but Clem Snide uses Ebert’s epiphany to make something that is...

The Avett Brothers performed their new song “Tell the Truth” on Monday on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Scott Avett took lead on the mid-tempo electronic, piano ballad, with his brother Seth joining in unison during the song’s chorus.
“Tell the truth to yourself,” Scott sings, “and the rest will fall in place.”
“Tell the Truth” is a song from the band’s new album, Closer Than Together, which the Avetts say is their attempt at something approaching a political record. But “Tell the Truth” is a typically inward-looking original from the group,...

Seated behind the wheel of an antique Ford truck in a red rhinestone suit, Scott Avett stretches his arms across the cab and out the window, singing high and proud about being a “high steppin’, high bettin’, love givin’, love gettin’” kind of man.
It’s not long, though, before he realizes that Death — played by Seth Avett, his brother and co-founder of folk-rock band the Avett Brothers — is riding shotgun. As it turns out, that wide-open road of possibility is a narrower lane than it seemed, and fate is...

On Friday evening, dobro player Jerry Douglas stood side stage at MerleFest and marveled watching Tyler Childers play the headlining slot in front of a capacity crowd numbering in the tens of thousands.
“It’s great to see all these new artists here,” Douglas says. “You know, Tyler used to come and watch this thing. So did Zac Brown and the Avett Brothers. And they’ve all eventually headlined here. It’s a sacred place to play — it’s a badge of honor.”

In 2012, the Avett Brothers joined Randy Travis for a taping of Cmt Crossroads, a musical union that deftly matched the rootsy folk of the North Carolina band with the traditional country of fellow North Carolinian Travis. Seven years on, it stands as one of the best, most seamless Crossroads, a testament to the musicianship of the Avetts and the singing prowess of Travis, who no longer performs after suffering a stroke in 2013.

The Avett Brothers have released their first taste of new music in 2019, the wintry heartbreak ballad “Neapolitan Sky.”
This marks the third time in the past several months that the Avetts have debuted fresh music, with “Roses and Sacrifice” dropping last October and the spritely “Trouble Letting Go” following in December. “Neapolitan Sky” finds the group presenting their trademark mix of the wearied and the wondrous, pairing a shuffling melody with some gentle bottleneck slide guitar and a lamentation for lost love that seems to be echoed everywhere in the...

After 48 years of making music, Asleep at the Wheel will be the first to admit there’s nothing new under the sun — and when it comes to country songs, you can probably thank Willie Nelson for those. So says the veteran Texas swing act on their latest track, “Willie Got There First,” featuring Seth and Scott Avett of the Avett Brothers.
Written by Seth Avett, “Willie Got There First” is a playful ode to the Red Headed Stranger and his omnipresent influence on the genre. “I had such a good idea for a song,...

Having a new LP is always something of a relative term in Asleep at the Wheel’s world, given how steeped they are in Western swing and other classic forms. The Texas ensemble tackles a rockabilly standard with their latest release, a rambunctious rendition of “Seven Nights to Rock.”
The song was written by Buck Trail, Henry Glover, and Louis Innis more than a half century ago, and first recorded in 1956 by Moon Mullican. One of the most famous versions was done by Nick Lowe, but Brian Setzer, Bryan Adams,...

A band as seasoned as Asleep at the Wheel hardly needs to put out new music these days. With a 48-year run that spans more than 20 albums, there’s plenty of material for Ray Benson and his crew to draw upon. But the Texas-based Western swing ensemble is back at it with a new LP, New Routes, and a youthful reimagining of an old-fashioned ode to getting high, “Jack I’m Mellow.”

The Avett Brothers show off their vulnerable side in the new trailer for May it Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers, Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio’s anticipated documentary about the North Carolina folk-rock band.
“If there was anyone I wanted to start a band with, it was Scott,” lead vocalist-guitarist Seth Avett says of his bandmate/brother. “There are all these bonds that become established when you’re children.”
The clip incorporates original footage of the Avetts in the studio, on the road, and at home visiting their father, as well as never-before-seen family photographs and home movies,...

In 2012, when Judd Apatow used the Avett Brothers' buoyant, love-drunk ballad "Live and Die" in his coming-of-middle-age comedy This Is 40, it was a choice that reflected a passion for the band's heartfelt folk pop. "Their music is about reaching out and trying to connect with other people, as well as the obstacles of love," says Apatow. "And I try to express some of the same things in the realm of comedy."

For many, Judd Apatow is purely thought of as a sort of comedy godfather. Between writing, directing, and producing, he’s responsible for some of the biggest comedies of the past decade. That’s both on television as well as in theaters. However, he offers more than that, as he’s occasionally supported smaller and more independent fare, helping to get it showcased. Today, he goes the documentary route for just the second time (after the Espn 30 for 30 offering Doc & Darryl) with May It Last: A Portrait Of The Avett Brothers, something very different than you’d expect from Apatow. It’s a one night only special event that celebrates not just a band, but a quieter style of musical documentary filmmaking. In addition, it proves even further that Apatow is a supreme talent in this business. This documentary is a look at North Carolina based folk rock band The Avett Brothers.

Jack White knows which direction his obsessions with American folk, blues and country steered him as an artist. "When you get back to Howlin' Wolf, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson – it basically begins there, and that's the best it ever was and the best it's ever going to be," White declared Thursday night onstage at the Sundance Film Festival, following a preview of the ambitious six-hour American Epic documentary series for PBS.
