Rock out Thursday June 5th when Sound City screens at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood at 7pm.
I’ve never seen Sound City. I’ve seen hardly any rock docs (unless you count Spinal Tap), not even Scorsese’s The Last Waltz. I did enjoy Anvil! The Story Of Anvil a couple of years ago. I saw the Led Zep film The Song Remains The Same when it was new and recall a midnight show of Black And Blue, a Black Sabbath/Blue Oyster Cult concert film around 1980 that I can’t imagine sitting through today. Anyway, A Film Series is kicking off a new Rockumentary film series with Sound City next Thursday, June 5th, at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood, Missouri 63143). The movie begins at 7pm

When Nirvana came down to L.A. to record Nevermind in 1991, nobody knew who we were, so our budget was pretty small. We picked a recording studio in Van Nuys called Sound City because it was cheap--and because it had a Neve 8028 sound board. Rupert Neve is an English electronics engineer--he's still alive and in his eighties--and his handmade, hand-wired analog recording consoles from the 1970s were famous for giving music a warm sound that was good for rock and roll.

Los Angeles, Calif. -- Rock musician Dave Grohl set out to make a recording studio the subject of his first-ever film. He was intrigued not only by the studio but by a specific piece of recording equipment – a 1970s era sound board – that captured every note of music made there.
Geek city, right? It sounds like an idea any sane moviegoer would run from.
Instead, "Sound City" offers a colorful piece of music history, a candid examination of changes wrought by technology and a defiant statement about not surrendering the human element in creativity. Grohl's rookie film made it to the Sundance movie festival, is being released theatrically Friday and is accompanied by an album featuring artists he interviewed.
"It honestly was more like a keg party with a camera than making a Hollywood film," he said.
Grohl knew nothing about the Sound City studio in Van Nuys, Calif., when...
