‘The Kitchen’ Trailer Follows Class Clash in Dystopian London for Daniel Kaluuya’s Directorial Debut
A war is coming to London as the gap between rich and poor is stretched to its limits in the trailer for Netflix’s The Kitchen.
Co-directed by Daniel Kaluuya and Kibwe Tavares, the upcoming science fiction drama pits the underclass of a dystopian London against a brutal ruling class in a society where social housing has been eliminated. Instead, the working class make up the residents of “The Kitchen,” including British actor and rapper Kane Robinson’s Izi.
“I’m getting out of this place,” Izi tells one man in the trailer, who responds, “It’s our home.”
With Jedaiah Bannerman’s Benji — the son he never knew — under his wing, Izi fights to escape a place plagued by violent repression as their community refuses to leave the place they call home. The two-minute trailer mostly focuses in on painting the film’s universe through a series of action...

Daniel Kaluuya world premiered his feature directorial debut, “The Kitchen,” at the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday night, calling it “one of the best days of my life.”
Kaluuya was on hand alongside his co-director Kibwe Tavares, producer Daniel Emmerson and several of the film’s actors, including “Top Boy” star Kane Robinson and newcomer Jedaiah Bannerman. Set in a dystopian London where all social housing has been banned, the film follows the residents of a community called the Kitchen who must fight to save their home.
Speaking before the premiere, Kaluuya and Tavares explained that it’s taken nearly a decade to bring the Netflix film to the screen. “[In] January 2014, we all put £200 each up in Holloway in a barber shop to make a taster of this film,” Kaluuya said.
“Obviously, this is mine and Kibwe’s directorial debut, and I learned a lot on the journey,” he continued.

Exclusive: The BFI London Film Festival closes Sunday with the world premiere of The Kitchen, a movie set in a dystopian London where an impoverished community is forced to fend for themselves in ramshackle apartment blocks. It marks the feature directorial debut of Oscar- winning actor Daniel Kaluuya and architect-turned-filmmaker Kibwe Tavares.
It’s a film that Kaluuya, Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Emmerson (Calm With Horses), The Kitchen’s producer, have spent the best part of a decade bringing to the screen.
This column’s about how three friends came together to develop a tiny idea that over the years has evolved into tale about a London that’s split in half — those who have and those who don’t.
However, through their eyes, it’s a London that, ultimately, offers a sense of humanity and hope.

The U.K.’s Film4 backs 10 to 12 features a year, meaning that its eight-strong lineup of world premieres at Toronto Intl. Film Festival see the curtain raised on a hefty chunk of its slate.
That’s fine by Film4 boss Daniel Battsek. “Toronto was elevated for me during my American experience; it was only once I was living there and working at Miramax that for me it became this legendary launching pad,” he says.
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” had its world premiere at Toronto and that picture marked a change of tack by Film4, the film arm of British pubcaster Channel 4, whereby it took a larger stake in a select number of bigger-budget movies. These sit along more modestly-budgeted fare and films from first-timers, which Film4 is also mandated to support.

To cross the Devers family is to earn retribution. This is a known fact to all in the rural Irish town of Glanbeigh. Some strangers arrive and overstep their bounds without knowing (as if getting involved with drug dealers was an act whose danger can be unknown), but most everyone knows everyone else’s name and where to find them. So when it’s Fannigan’s (Liam Carney) turn to “make good” on a transgression, he doesn’t try to run. He sits in his chair as Douglas “Arm” Armstrong (Cosmo Jarvis) enters and simply requests that it be “done quick.” Arm obliges without hesitation since he earns no pleasure from what’s become his job. Friend and “brother” Dympna Devers (Barry Keoghan) merely points him in the right direction and says, “Bite.”

The first clip of “Calm With Horses” shows Barry Keoghan in menacing form and Cosmo Jarvis wrestling with having to carry out violent acts for a feared Irish crime family. The film is Nick Rowland’s directorial debut and counts Michael Fassbender among its exec producers. It will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday, playing in the festival’s Discovery strand.
The picture is set in rural Ireland. It follows former boxer Douglas “Arm” Armstrong (Jarvis), who is the feared enforcer for the drug-dealing Devers family. Arm is struggling to be a good father to his autistic 5-year-old son when the Devers ask him to kill someone. Faced with a moral dilemma, Arm must decide what sort of man he wants to be.
Niamh Algar, recently seen in Shane Meadow’s acclaimed drama series “The Virtues,” also stars and can be seen in the first-look footage.
