Actress Jennifer Lawrence is set to appear on four different versions of Vogue’s 125th anniversary issue — and one is a painting by John Currin. The New York Times has a preview of Currin’s painting, in which star of “The Hunger Games” films and the upcoming “Mother!” is decked out in a fancy candy-striped hat and a billowy tan top. The Times notes that the whimsical image is a departure from Currin’s often erotic style. This year, Vogue has achieved a major milestone for any publication, celebrating it’s 125th-year in print. And to celebrate the occasion, the monthly magazine not only went with one of their favorite actresses for the main image, Jennifer Lawrence, who has now graced the cover three times, but to create something appropriately grand for this milestone achievement Vogue also commissioned four artists, photographers Bruce Weber, Annie Leibovitz, Inez and Vinoodh, and painter John Currin to each develop their unique aesthetic take on this Oscar-winning star, transforming her into their own personal muse.

Tonight’s contemporary-art sale at Christie’s, called “If I Live I'll See You Tuesday,” should be unremarkable, insofar as it's selling the same artists who always appear at contemporary-art auctions. There’s a twist, though: Christie's is trying to tout this sale as hardcore, dangerous. The house made a slick promo video featuring professional skateboarder Chris Martin and a soundtrack by Awolnation, in which we see Martin snake his way through storage bins, salesrooms, and freight elevators, giving high-fives to black workers and nodding to others preparing works on their way to auction. Martin glides in slo-mo past art featured in the sale: work by Christopher Wool, Wade Guyton, Richard Prince, Jeff Koons, Dan Colen, Cady Noland, John Currin, and other blue-chip names. Christie's crows that this sale has been "curated" by an in-house person named Loic Gouzer and that it seeks to represent "the gritty and underbelly-esq [sic] side...

Jimmy Kimmel has been revealed as the purchaser of a nude painting of "Golden Girls" star Bea Arthur -- which he bought for $1.9 million dollars for his friend, comedian Jeffrey Ross. The painting, by artist John Currin, was done in 1991 and is simply titled "Bea Arthur Naked."
Jeff Ross is famous for a joke he made about Arthur during a Friar's Club Roast.
"Sandra Bernhard had just sung this ridiculous song," Ross recalls to TVHowl.com. "I can't remember the name of the song she sang, she sang 'Magic Man' or something like that to Jerry Stiller. He was the honoree, it was a Friars Club Roast in New York in 1999 and I can't remember the song she sang, but it was very sexy obviously [and it] made Jerry squirm, as he would whenever anything vulgar or dirty [was said]. He was very shy that way. It was very funny to watch, and I...

Thank you for being a friend, Jimmy Kimmel! The late-night host apparently got wind of fellow funnyman Jeff Ross' love for late Golden Girl Bea Arthur because, according to a tweet from Ross, Kimmel was the one who plunked down slightly more than $1.9 million on May 15 for a topless painting of the silver fox. Which he, in turn, gifted to Ross. The kitsch-tastic portrait, done by John Currin in 1991, was expected to fetch between $1.8 million and $2.5 million at auction. Lot 13 at Christie's Post-War & Contemporary Evening Sale ended up selling for $1,915,750, but the buyer's identity was not released. Until now? There's been no word back yet from...

The nude picture of late actress Beatrice Arthur was sold for 1.9 million dollars to an anonymous buyer at New York auction this Wednesday night. It was sold at a lower price than expected. The painting was expected to fetch around 2.5 million dollars. Named ‘Bea Arthur Naked’, this painting was created by artist John Currin way back in 1991. Actually, Beatrice Arthur never modeled naked for Currin; he painted the sketch from a clothed photo of Bea Arthur. The owner’s name was kept under wrap due to some unknown reason. Beatrice Arthur was hugely popular for her portrayal of Dorothy Zbornak in the hit comedy "The Golden Girls." She ...

The internet was taken by storm this week when a nude portrait of Bea Arthur sold for nearly $2 million at auction in New York City. Most people were shocked to see the "Golden Girls" star in a topless pose, while others were impressed by the painting's flattering physique. Either way, the image will now be forever burned in the collective consciousness of the cyber world. Thanks, John Currin!
Arthur's voluptuous bust received a lot of attention on social media networks, with sites like Facebook and Twitter punishing users who uploaded images of "Naked Bea Arthur" for all to see. Even The Daily Beast couldn't be spared the shame when their Facebook page was temporarily suspended as a result of posting the portrait.

Back in 1991, John Currin completed a controversial painting of a topless Bea Arthur, an Emmy-winning actress known for her work on such television shows as "Golden Girls" and "Maude." Unfortunately, Arthur passed way in 2009 at the age of 86, but the painting lived on and has now become a piece of art that apparently lots of people would love to add to their collection. On Wednesday night, the painting was auctioned off, shocking everyone when it sold for nearly $2 million. The auction's website described it as "nostalgic and repelling." Check out the painting below. It's an uncensored version, which means it's not safe for work. Uncensored Painting: (click to enlarge)...

While one might assume it impossible to put a price on dreams, Christie’s did just that last night by affixing a $1.915 million tag on Bea Arthur Naked, John Currin’s infamous topless portrait of the late Maude star, once more standing up for women’s liberation by airing her unfettered breasts. If something seems weird or unsettling about that to you, you’re right: The painting fetched less than its estimated going rate of $2.5 million, a number Christie’s reached through a careful algorithm of calculating the rarity of ever seeing Bea Arthur’s breasts ...

If you've got a couple million dollars laying around, you could have been the proud owner of a naked Bea Arthur painting. In an art auction (link contains painted nudity) Wednesday, May 15, a 1991 painting of the "Golden Girls" star topless sold for $1.9 million. The painting, simply titled "Bea Arthur Naked," is by artist John Currin.
Arthur never sat for the portrait, nor did she actually pose topless. Instead, Currin relied on a photo of a clothed Arthur for the basis of his piece. Though the painting is 22 years old, it's still causing a little controversy.
When the Daily Beast (link contains painted nudity) posted a link to an article about the work on their Facebook account, the site locked them out. In posting the link, a thumbnail image of the painting appeared, showing breasts. Facebook flagged the post as against the rules, placing them on a 24-hour ban. Of course,...

Way harsh: An Internet Famous painting of a nude Bea Arthur went for just $1.915 million after auction house Christie's estimated its value at anywhere between $1.8 and $2.5 million. You've already seen it. John Currin's infamous portrait, titled Bea Arthur Naked, is not necessarily an accurate rendering of the late Arthur's bosom (the actress never sat for Currin), but has made quite a stir online. With its viral fame already firmly intact, I guess the anonymous buyer didn't really need to pay extra? Or perhaps being famous on the Internet isn't actually related to your monetary value? We've censored her up top, but if you wanna see the real thing, it's (of course) on the Internet.

John Currin's controversial portrait of a topless Bea Arthur has sold for $1.9 million in a record-breaking Christie's auction that netted a whopping $495 million for 70 lots on the block. Despite heavy interest online -- ahoy, it's Dorothy from the Golden Girls as you've never seen her before! -- the Arthur sale fell short of expectations, having been projected to go for as high as $2.5 million. A secret bidder acquired the 1991 work, called "Bea Arthur Naked," at Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art Sale in New York City on Wednesday evening. "Anonymous bids are frequent in the

A nude portrait of Golden Girls star Bea Arthur sold for a whopping $1.9 million at Christie's auction house this week. The pricey painting went to one lucky, anonymous phone bidder.
John Currin (B. 1962) "Bea Arthur Naked," oil on canvas, Painted in 1991.
The controversial artist John Currin painted "Bea Arthur Naked" in 1991, which features the late actress in nothing but her birthday suit. It's just one of many nude paintings created by the artist, who tends to choose provocative women -- both celebrities and nonentities -- as his subject matter.
“It’s historically significant," Christie's representative Koji Inoue says of the Arthur portait in a statement to The New York Post. "It’s radical to sexualize someone people think of as asexual." (Ed. note: "Asexual?" Really?)
The painting was expected to fetch between $1.8 and $2.5 million, so whomever scored the naked Bea got their famous artwork for a bargain price. You can...

Art is meant to be interpreted by eye of the beholder. So interpret how you will the painting Bea Arthur Naked, which features of Bea Arthur donning an elegant Victorian ensemble of cloaks and frills. Just kidding! She's crazy naked. The oil painting, made by John Currin in 1991, was quite controversial at the time it was created, being labeled an "acrid fantasy...of menopausal women" by the New Yorker. But now you can own it for your own personal viewing for the low, low price of somewhere between $1.8 million and $2.5 million when it goes on auction at Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Evening Sale!
