State borders may have become more defined in the wake of Covid-19, but the inverse has occurred among the state screen agencies, who presented a united front at this week’s Australian International Documentary Conference (Aidc).
Film Victoria CEO Caroline Pitcher; Screen Territory director Jennie Hughes; Screen Nsw head Grainne Brunsdon; South Australian Film Corporation (Safc) CEO Kate Croser, Screenwest documentary manager Paul Williams; Screen Queensland CEO Kylie Munnich, and Screen Tasmania executive manager Alex Sangston joined moderator and head of drama at Sweetshop & Green, Ester Harding, on Tuesday for a wide-reaching discussion on the issues facing the industry at a national and state level.
The pandemic has reportedly strengthened the communication between the state bodies, which now come together every fortnight to discuss the challenges resulting from the altered climate.
Sangston said it was important for the industry to know how much the agencies talked to one another.

Screen Tasmania CEO Alex Sangston.
As part of the Tasmanian Government’s Covid-19 support package, new funding of $1.5 million and operational measures of over $2 million have been introduced to support the individuals and organisations in the cultural sector.
The package has been designed to specifically address the challenges facing artists, screen practitioners and organisations.
In addition to this funding, the Tasmanian Government’s small business emergency supports grants program of $20 million will be established for initial emergency grant payments of $2,500 to business in a variety of industries including those in the arts sector who are suffering financial hardship.
Screen Tasmania is fast-tracking assessment of a number of applications in its current development round and has added an additional meeting of the Screen Tasmania Expert Advisory Group on April 3.
This meeting will consider some existing applications in project development, games development and production investment, which would otherwise have been waiting until July for a decision,...

Anni Browning accepts the 2017 Spa Award to Film Finances for Best Service and Facilities.
In 22 years with Film Finances Australasia, Anni Browning experienced numerous highs and faced a few challenges as the cinema industry ebbed and flowed.
Browning, who has stepped down as MD of the completion bond company but is still a consultant, supported Rachel Perkins’ debut feature Radiance.
She took one of her biggest risks on a Rolf de Heer movie, which she counts as one of her proudest achievements.
The biggest trend during her time has been the proliferation of low budget films, despite the need to pay crews and allocate reasonable money for post- production. Film Finances bonded a lot of films budgeted at $1 million- $1.5 million and one-off feature docs costing as little as $100,000- $200,000.
One thing which has not remained constant is the insurance bond premium. When she started it was as high as 6 per cent of the budget.
