Last week, City Harvest, New York City’s first and largest food rescue organization, presented The 40th Anniversary Gala: House of Harvest, hosted by actor, model and producer Tyson Beckford, with décor by world-renowned celebrity event planner Colin Cowie.
The evening raised enough to provide more than 9.6 million meals for New Yorkers in need as they continue to grapple with record-high food costs, the end of federal aid programs, and the continued economic impacts of the pandemic.
The event honored the organization’s longtime Board Chair Jim Kallman and City Harvest’s frontline workers who were at the forefront of the organization’s work to help feed New Yorkers in need at the height of and throughout the pandemic. These frontline heroes helped rescue and distribute nearly 300 million pounds of food for New Yorkers across all five boroughs between March 2020 and June 2022 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

HBO’s “100 Foot Wave” offers few visual clues the world outside of the compelling docuseries was in the grips of a 100-year pandemic that will kill millions of people.
The show’s hero and protagonist, Garrett McNamara, was not filmed wearing a mask despite the close quarters of many scenes that are featured in Season 2’s first and second episodes. And he was by no means alone.
But Covid-restricted plane rides to Portugal were soon required as rare early season conditions at Nazaré prompted a reunion of the world’s best big-wave surfers. They included McNamara, Ian Cosenza, Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca and Kai Lenny.
“We saw this big swell on the map,” McNamara said from his house in O’ahu, Hawaii. “It was the best-looking swell that I’ve seen, with the best conditions. And it looked like it was going to be the best waves we’ve ever seen.

Surfing legend Garrett McNamara has broken many bones riding some of the world’s biggest waves.
“Broke my feet many times, broke my ribs many times,” he notes. “I’ve broke my back, broke my shoulder.”
Those injuries have not deterred him from going back into the ocean and seeking to do what might seem impossible, or at least inadvisable: surfing a 100-foot-tall wave.
His quest to accomplish that feat unfolds in the six-part HBO Sports documentary 100 Foot Wave, coming this spring to HBO and to streaming platform HBO Max. Chris Smith directed, aiming “to try to tell the story from land and sea.”
