Ron Alston, Jr. started trying to instill confidence in his daughter before she was even born.
“I would play the 1996 Chicago Bulls anthem to her mom’s stomach,” he says, referring to the Alan Parsons’ Projects’ ‘Sirius,’ “and that’s the greatest basketball team ever, so I knew she was going to be the greatest.”
He even wanted to play the song in the delivery room, but the hospital wouldn’t let him bring his phone in, he says.
After she was born, he switched to the Sesame Street gang singing “What I Am” and “Don’t Give Up,” two songs with other inspirational messages.

Come Under My Spell
(dir: Carlos Tobalina, 1979)
“The film that will bring you up to a joy you’re paying for!”
The film opens up in hip and swinging San Fransisco and instantly we are introduced to some heavy student action. Before the memories of university life get the better of me (yeah right!), we are introduced Fernando, played by Fernando Fortes (I Am Always Ready). Fernando is a foreign exchange student who really, really like animals! Unfortunately for him, he hasn’t had any human action since arriving in America. Thankfully, his friend Dave, played by Blair Harris (Teeny Buns) is on hand to try and rectify that. He sets Fernando up with a threesome, but it doesn’t go to plan. Being the good friend that he is, Dave decides to cheer him up by buying a cheap copy of a sexual hypnotism book. After studying hard through the power of montage,...

Beck hasn’t been particularly prolific lately when it comes to new studio music. Sure, he’s been busy recording cover albums, producing artists like Thurston Moore and Charlotte Gainsbourg, and collaborating with McSweeney’s on the “Song Reader” sheet-music project, but it’s been more than five years since the release of 2008’s “Modern Guilt.” That break ends tomorrow (24) with “Morning Phase” tomorrow. The album has been tagged a sequel of sorts to Beck’s popular break-up album, 2002’s “Sea Change.” Rather than a true sequel, that descriptor is more useful as shorthand to let the listener know the album is primarily acoustic; song-oriented rather than beats oriented, and confessional. And, like “Sea Change,” regardless of what else Beck records, it will stand out as a gorgeous milestone in his career. “Morning Phase” is an immersive experience that doesn’t lend itself to parsing individual tracks. It’s meant...

Seconds Before Landing: The Great Deception (Sbl)
First, let me say that, setting aside a quibble or two, this is almost certainly my favorite album of 2013. And that has less to do with any specific personnel, "song," or individual aspect of the album than it does with the fact that the old adage "they just don't write 'em like that anymore" does not apply here. This is a "progressive" album in every sense of that term, and is somehow able to both evoke the heyday of a particular genre of progressive rock (i.e., have a certain "timeless" quality to it) and to be both timely and relevant in the present.
The primary writer here is John Crispino, about whom little seems to be known except that he is a "composer and musician." (He plays drums, keyboards, and percussion, and provides most of the vocals.) He is joined by a distinguished group of musicians,...

It’s always reassuring when a pop gem from ’82 finds new life. (Don’t worry, I’m not talking “Ebony and Ivory” or “Centerfold,” so your conscience will be clear and whole after this.)
The Australian band Parralox, featuring gay lead singer John von Ahlen, just released the video for its cover of the Alan Parsons Project hit “Eye in the Sky,” and it’s an exclusive to TheBacklot. The cover is a world of ambience and extraterrestrial electronics away from the original, which was pretty unassuming for a #3 U.S. hit. Parallox’s version is downright danceable, sounding more like a Robyn smash than a rehash, and that makes the song’s voyeuristic lyrics feel that much weirder.
The brand new video features mirrored sets, model Rowena Kang, and serious Depeche Mode attitude. I guess such fun melodrama is expected from a band called Parralox, which is a reference...

I haven’t been seeing many movies lately and it’s been killing me; I feel like my mind’s shrunk into a leathery, walnut-sized nub. The 99% of the population who don’t spend hours every day watching movies often look askance at people like me; they seem to think that I’ve been wasting my time, while they, who spend those same hours shopping for napkin rings, cleaning their shower-tile grout, or—even worse—writing poetry, seem to think that their own cogitations are more spiritually uplifting. But recently I remembered just how creative watching movies can be when I re-read Walter Benjamin’s essay “Unpacking My Library”, in which the noted bibliophile wrote about a book collector’s relationship with his possessions. Surprisingly, there aren’t that many similarities between book collecting and cinephilia, but the differences do remind me why I’ve been feeling the need to...

Chicago – One of the most influential sound artists in American rock history is Todd Rundgren. Known for radio friendly hits like “Hello It’s Me,” “I Saw the Light” and “Bang the Drum All Day,” Rundgren also is one of rock’s most notable producers, formulating hits for Meat Loaf, Grand Funk Railroad, the New York Dolls and Xtc.
Born near Philadelphia, he began his career in 1967 at the age of nineteen, forming the cult garage band Nazz. After leaving the band in 1969, he taught himself audio production and began a fruitful period of producing and creating name hit songs of the 1970s. His solo album “Something/Anything?” (1972) was a breakout hit record, and he also produced chart toppers like “We’re an American Band” (Grand Funk Railroad) and “Bat Out of Hell” (Meat Loaf). During this time he also got together with players that would ultimately become Utopia, the...
