The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, a whopping 61 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12. Last year, there were only 48 options, compared to 41 in 2021 and 28 in 2020.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. A new rule change will require each voter to make no more than five selections in this category, whereas there was previously no limit. As opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Garcelle Beauvais has landed the lead role in the upcoming Lifetime original movie Black Girl Missing, part of the network’s Stop Violence Against Women campaign. According to Deadline, Beauvais will star in and executive produce the film, which is inspired by real stories of missing women of color. The NYPD Blue alum will portray a mother named Cheryl, whose daughter, Lauren (Iyana Halley), goes missing and is dismissed by authorities and media as a runaway. At the same time, the police and press heavily focus on another missing girl, who is white, while Cheryl and her 15-year-old daughter Marley (Taylor Mosby) enlist the help of a dedicated community of amateur internet sleuths to try to find Lauren. The movie will also feature the Black and Missing Foundation, as Cheryl discovers the disparity in how missing persons of color cases are treated with...

Netflix and Ben Falcone’s new movie, Thunder Force, is a comedy obsessed with superpowers. Octavia Spencer wants them, Melissa McCarthy stumbles into them, and a supremely bored looking Bobby Cannavale flaunts them. Everyone gets a power. Yet Thunder Force’s real gift isn’t those CGI tricks; it’s that like a humor-vampire, it can drain all the spark, charm, and wit from its talented cast, leaving behind the soulless carcass we have before us.
Greenlit by Netflix before the pandemic, Thunder Force is the exact kind of half-hearted laugher (read: with no actual laughs) that’s become Adam Sandler’s bread and butter on the streamer. You know, the type where good enough is never particularly good, and the most pressing question from the crew might be “when’s lunch?” Of course the greater shame in this is that a comedian as talented as McCarthy—who has actual...

(Spoilers ahead for Netflix’s “Thunder Force.” Read on at your own risk.)
“Thunder Force” has all the staples of a typical superhero movie — except when it comes to our heroes’ origin stories. There are no radioactive spiders or gamma radiation; just good old-fashioned science. But at the end of the movie, that science gets a little murky and we have to ask: How exactly does Tracy get her powers?
Before we get to Tracy, let’s review a few things. First, there definitely is some super phenomenon happening in “Thunder Force.” In fact, it sets up the whole foundation of the film. It’s explained that in March 1983, “a massive pulse of interstellar cosmic rays struck the Earth and its population.” The rays affected a select portion of the population differently than others, giving them powers. They were labeled “Miscreants.”

I’m guessing everyone’s ready for the start of Summer movie season, anxiously awaiting the first batch of action blockbusters, slapstick comedies, and, of course, the superheroes (and superheroines). Well, we’re going to have to wait a bit longer as the vaccines try to eradicate the pandemic that still has lots of screen venues shuttered. Yeah, we’ve gone over a year without a multiplex trip to the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), so perhaps we need something to keep us going until the Black Widow finally arrives, after lots of delays. This weekend we’ve got a super-powered duo of lady crusaders (though without capes) ready to fight for justice. And laughs. Yes, one of the current queens of comedy teams up with a beloved Oscar-winner to put a satiric spin on the genre. Plus it’s streaming exclusively, so no need to seek out a cinema “safe haven”. Ah,...

“Thunder Force” is nearly half over before the action-comedy lands on a real joke: the introduction of co-star Jason Bateman as a half-superhero mutant with crab arms instead of human appendages. Jokes aside, Bateman’s “The Crab” also makes for a good foil to the eponymous Thunder Force, a pair of unexpected crime fighters who have emerged to battle the supervillain crime wave that has consumed the world since their childhood. They need all the help (or hurt) they can get.

Exclusive: The Moodys star Chelsea Frei is set for a recurring role on the upcoming third season of TBS comedy series The Last O.G., starring Tracy Morgan and Tiffany Haddish.
Co-created and executive-produced by Oscar winner Jordan Peele, season two of The Last O.G. saw Morgan’s character Tray going all in on his dreams of becoming a chef, and Tray’s ex-girlfriend Shay (Haddish) collaborating with an unlikely business partner.
Frei will play Luna, a millennial Brooklynite who is politically correct to a fault. She is self-righteous and rife with contradictions; She’s a hippie, anti-consumerist who loves shopping and an ardent feminist who unironically loves The Bachelorette.
Along with Morgan and Haddish, series regulars include Ryan Gaul, Allen Maldonado, Taylor Mosby and Dante Hoagland.
Actress, producer and writer Frei can currently be seen starring in the Fox event comedy series, The Moodys, alongside Denis Leary, Elizabeth Perkins and Jay Baruchel.

Timed to its participation in the WarnerMedia upfront festivities, TBS has ordered two new shows to series and announced the renewal of two comedies.
Take a look at what shows will be joining and returning to the network’s 2019-2020 schedule.
Series Orders
TBS has decided to give “Full Frontal” correspondant Amy Hoggart her own show.
The untitled project will be a half-hour, non-political series which will explore everyday problems through Hoggart’s unique humor, blending scripted and unscripted segments.
Hoggart will pen the series, while continuing her correspondent duties on Samantha Bee’s show.
“I’m so relieved to be finally getting my money’s worth after an expensive and so far useless psychology course,” said Hoggart. “I’ll be exploring the topics we all have a hard time coping with, learn why we do the insane things we do, and unnecessarily demean myself for laughs. I’m beyond...

She was ready with that Tracy Morgan impression: Tiffany Haddish showed off some comedic range Tuesday on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” doing a pretty spot-on impersonation of her “The Last O.G.” co-star.
“Is Tracy the richest person you know?” Jimmy Kimmel asked his Brooklyn guest.
“I’ve done a lot of Bar Mitzvahs,” Haddish replied. “I’m gonna say, no.”

“I think he’s one of the richest people I know,” she said, using the generous setup to launch into her impression.
For the impersonation, Haddish goofed on Morgan’s odd octopus collection. The line, “You know my fish tank is crazy,” just feels ripe for Morgan-voice.

Tiffany Haddish and Tracy Morgan made for one of the more enjoyable TV pairings of last year. Playing a pair of ex-partners adjusting to life after Tray (Morgan) is released from prison, the two form the narrative and comedic backbone of the TBS series “The Last O.G.”
When the show premiered last spring, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said of Haddish (and the show’s first season overall), “She’s a force as much as she constitutes the show’s limitations overall: Very good yet not yet great, the rest of the series gets a lot right early on without making a move to the top tier of television. That may nag at some who come in with ultra-high expectations, but Haddish and Morgan are marvelous, and ‘The Last O.G.’ could easily coast for six seasons on their charm alone.”
