Co-directed by Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote, The Wrath of Becky is a sequel to Becky, a twisted home invasion horror that quickly gained cult appeal when it was released in 2020. With original co-directing duo Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion on board as executive producers, it’s a satisfying follow-up that ticks all the right sequel boxes.
The story picks up three years after the events of the first film, with a now 16-year-old Becky (Lulu Wilson) living with kindly elderly lady Elena (Denise Burse) and working as a diner waitress. However, when Becky pours coffee in the lap of an obnoxious customer, he and his friends follow her home, killing Elena and stealing Becky’s beloved dog, Diego. Released to theaters in the theatrical dog days of mid-2020, Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s “Becky” became a home-formats hit, its gleefully tasteless home-invasion thrills a guilty-pleasure tonic for Covid captives going a bit stir-crazy. Now Lulu Wilson is back as that title character, more or less the sole survivor of her prior screen outing. You can be sure in “The Wrath of Becky” that age hasn’t dulled her pissed-off homicidal verve, and that fate will surely provide another crop of ne’er-do-wells to tempt its exercise.
However, a different writing-directing duo is in charge this time, Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote. Their efforts generate rewards that are somewhat diminished, if still diverting. Quiver is releases this SXSW-premiered sequel to U.S. theaters, with home-formats dates as yet unannounced.

Plot: Becky decimated a quartet of neo-Nazis when she was just 13 years old. Now a couple years have passed, and she finds herself up against a new group of enemies.
Review: The pandemic shut the world down in March of 2020. But a few months later, directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion gifted a nation of shut-ins with a special treat: the thriller Becky, which has been described as an “ultra violent Home Alone”. Playing in drive-ins across America before heading to VOD, Becky earned $1 million at the domestic box office during that troubled time. In the long run, it made enough money and caught enough attention to get a sequel greenlit… and now we have The Wrath of Becky. A sequel that comes from an entirely new creative team, who decided to make a tonal shift that might not sit well with some fans of the original.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival. Quiver Distribution releases the film in theaters on Friday, May 26.
When we last left “Becky” (starring an extraordinary Lulu Wilson), she’d managed to off an entire cell of neo-Nazis, ingeniously and gruesomely plotting their deaths after she and her ill-fated dad ran afoul of the baddies during the world’s worst family vacation. Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s icky “Becky” didn’t do much more than deliver on the promise of turning a teenage girl into a righteous murderer — and, again, what luck to have cast the plucky and spunky Wilson in the title role — but it did feel as if there was more ground to cover (and more blood to spill).
Thus: Sequel! “The Wrath of Becky,” which arrives just three years after Milott and Murnion’s indie hit, certainly offers more — it’s also more of the same.

Becky is back, and this time it’s… pretty much the same as last time. Three years ago, the world witnessed one of the craziest heel turns in recent history, funny guy Kevin James turned up in Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s uber violent Home Alone riff, Becky as vicious neo-Nazi, Dominick. As insane as that sounded to a lot of film fans at the time, it actually worked. James played his villain dead straight, and he was legitimately terrifying. Becky pitted James against the fourteen-year-old titular character, played to smarmy perfection by Lulu Wilson, as he and his gang of murderous white supremacists sought a very particular artifact that just happened to be located in the cabin...

Lulu Wilson is nicely deadpan as a 13-year-old who gets really mean after four white supremacists turn up at her house
If Wes Anderson ever decided to make a violent home-invasion thriller, you could imagine him writing a character like the teenage hero of this nasty, occasionally effective, movie jointly directed by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion. Becky is a stroppy 13-year-old with blue-streaked hair and quirky-cool thrift-store clothes whose instinct, when faced with the choice of flight or flight, is to fight like Nicolas Cage on high-grade amphetamines. Up to a point she’s an interesting character, but her crazed badassery is laughably over the top, even for the genre.

With sterling support from Amanda Brugel (The Handmaid’s Tale) and hulking former pro wrestler Robert Maillet, Becky is a trip you don’t want to miss.

‘After We Collided.’
Five new mainstream titles entered the market last weekend – but none could beat the third frame of Warner Bros’ Tenet, which is benefiting from repeat business.
Product-starved exhibitors welcomed the influx and were pleasantly surprised by the turnout for Roadshow’s After We Collided but disappointed with Madman Entertainment’s Bill & Ted Face the Music.
A home entertainment release in the US, Paramount’s Paw Patrol: Jet to the Rescue drew a reasonable number of kids and families while fans of Korean boy band BTS flocked to Trafalgar Releasing’s Break the Silence: The Movie.
Released by Universal, Slim & I, Kriv Stenders’ biopic on country music star Joy McKean and her determination to be recognised as a performer and songwriter in her own right, resonated in regional locations.
Numero reported the top 20 titles generated $4.2 million, nearly 30 per cent up on the previous frame. “We have what I...

Becky, the new indie thriller from directors Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, earned lots of attention for casting the frequently goofy Kevin James (Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Kevin Can Wait) as a straight-faced, menacing neo-Nazi villain who’s willing to murder a child to get what he wants. But that’s not the only compelling aspect of […]

For this review round-up installment, this writer is diving into a pair of films that celebrate two fearsome females in very unique ways: Becky from directing duo Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, and Josephine Decker’s Shirley, which pulls back the curtain on the life of acclaimed writer Shirley Jackson. These films couldn’t be any more different from each other, and I highly recommend seeking out both of them just as soon as you can.
Becky: 13-year-old Becky (Lulu Wilson) is having a rough time lately. Her mom has passed away recently after battling a terminal illness, and her dad, Jeff (Joel McHale), has seemingly moved on with the well-meaning Kayla (Amanda Brugel), who is anxious to connect with the troubled teen, along with her adorably precocious son Ty (Isaiah Rockcliffe). Co-directing duo Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion return for Becky, a smartly conceived home invasion thriller that plays like a twisted coming-of-age movie.
Rising star Lulu Wilson plays 13 year old Becky, who’s recently lost her mother to cancer and is horrified when her father Jeff (Joel McHale) tricks her into spending the weekend at their remote lakeside summer house with his new fiancée Kayla (Amanda Brugel) and her young son (Isaiah Rockcliffe). However, she barely has time to throw a strop before escaped convict Dominick (Kevin James) arrives with three henchmen in tow and begins torturing her father, demanding to know the whereabouts of a key.

Exclusive: From what we’ve been able to pull together, Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour continues to reign with $300K in its ninth weekend at the domestic box office from a theatrical marketplace that remains largely shut down coast to coast.
Our sources believe that the sequel has made slightly more than $3M from theatrical ticket sales since Easter weekend outside of the $100M-plus from the pic’s PVOD release.
Deadline exclusively heard some hopeful news Monday, with sources telling us that June 12 is being eyed as the big reopening date for cinemas in California. The state’s Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to reveal plans soon.
Of the 5,500 theaters in the U.S., various sources have provided different figures to us as to exactly how many have reopened. Seven hundred cinemas is about the average we hear, with drive-ins repping 43% of that figure. In regard to the most theaters open by territory,...

It’s strange to think of the holiday-themed movie Home Alone like a home invasion film, but it’s playing with themes on the most superficial level of this subgenre of horror. The Wet Bandits, as the burglars are called in the film, aren’t structured for deep character menace and the violence. Once the blowtorch starts burning and the paint canisters start swinging, everything is played for slapstick comedy instead of gruesome horror.
Becky, from directors Jonathan Millot and Cary Murnion, takes a simplistic story that feels, in the beginning, like an overwrought family drama and infuses it with hefty doses of violence, gore, and a little inspiration from Home Alone. However, what may bring most people to make the decision to pick this grisly little film for a weekend stream is the role of actor Kevin James, yes, The King of Queens Kevin James, playing a neo-Nazi. IFC’s horror movie “The Wretched” passed the $1 million mark after a month of drive-in movie theater buzz.
The indie film took in $162,000 at 95 sites over the weekend. After premiering at the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival, it launched on May 1 at just 11 drive-ins, including the Mission Tiki in Montclair, Calif., where it had an informal premiere.
Written and directed by Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce, “The Wretched” follows a young boy who discovers an evil witch in the nearby woods. The cast includes John-Paul Howard, Piper Curda, Zarah Mahler, Azie Tesfai and Jamison Jones.
“Anyone who at this point disputes or discounts the power of the big screen experience need only look at the stellar ongoing drive-in performance of IFC’s ‘The Wretched,'” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
Meanwhile, Quiver’s thriller “Becky” was at the top of the small but growing U.S. box office with $178,186 at 42 locations.

The writing/directing team of Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion third feature film is as different as anything else they've done to date.
Becky stars up-and-coming talent Lulu Wilson as the titular Becky, a self-possessed 13-year-old who wants nothing more than to bond with her dad (Joel McHale) on a weekend getaway to the family's vacation home. The cabin holds some special memories for the pair and Becky sees this as an opportunity to re-connect with dad while dad sees this as his chance to break some big news to his daughter but both of their intentions are for naught when a group of escaped convicts, led by the maniacal Dominick (Kevin James). Not prepared to go down without a fight, Becky proves to be more than the convicts can handle.

But When She Was Bad, She Was Awful: Milott & Murnion Subvert Allegiances in Violent Thriller
The innocuously titled Becky is the third feature from co-director Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion and as it arrives in the midst of a country suddenly forced to acknowledge its systemic racism and trenchantly racist history, one wonders if its filmmakers would have changed its title to Karen had they written it today. Because Becky, as we eventually come to find, is certainly not the innocent little white girl we expect.
But beyond its obvious violent spatter which announces its ‘heroine’s’ penchant for violence and talents for killing, the script, penned by Nick Morris, Ruckus Skye and Lane Skye, ends on a note of perilous, ambiguity which completely subverts our understanding of what the film might really have been all about.…...

Movies are slowly starting to trickle back into theaters, emphasis on the word “slowly.” For the time being, audiences’ options are still better at home, as this week’s crop of new films includes outrageous new genre fare — such as “Becky,” from the directors of “Cooties,” which plays a bit like a hard-r version of “Home Alone” — and festival standouts such as Hong Sang-soo’s “Yourself and Yours.”
“The Invisible Man” star Elisabeth Moss elaborates on her ever-widening scope of tortured women in the wildly unconventional Shirley Jackson biopic, a movie which portrays the author of “The Lottery” as the kind of character one might discover in her mind-bending horror tales.
Here’s a complete rundown of the week’s new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them. Find more movies and TV shows to stream here.

With everything going on right now, I struggled as to whether or not I should put a moratorium on my work for the time being. For the most part, I have, only because entertainment journalism feels a bit futile these days. But at the same time, I thought that maybe digging into a movie where a teenage girl brutally destroys a group of Neo Nazis might be something we could all appreciate right now.
So, with that in mind, here’s my recent interview with filmmakers Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion about their most recent project, Becky. It's centered around the titular character (played by Lulu Wilson), who squares off against a menacing Kevin James that is hellbent on retrieving a mysterious item from her family’s lake house.

There should be special place in movie hell for lazy filmmakers who get off showing adults terrorizing children and animals. Is there an easier or cheaper way to jolt an audience? In 2014, directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion presented their debut feature, Cooties, a humorous take on the zombie subgenre with infected kids and their teachers as the victims. Later on, in 2017, the directing duo made Bushwick, a peculiar Children of Men-like action thriller with several long takes, in which Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow’s characters try to survive an unsettling armed attack to the titular Brooklyn neighborhood. Now Milott and Murnion are back with another genre effort, this time approaching the home invasion and the revenge subgenres. In Becky, the titular young girl (played by Lulu Wilson) is mourning the death of her mother and even though her father (Joel McHale) is planning to get married...

We’ve seen Elisabeth Moss take on corporate male toxicity in Mad Men, a ghost of a man in The Invisible Man, Gilead in The Handmaid’s Tale and punk rock in Her Smell. This weekend we’ll see her as a horror author who tries not to unravel as she goes through her creative process in the Josephine Decker-directed Shirley.
The film, which is adapted from Susan Scarf Merrell’s 2014 novel of the same name, bowed at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and is based on the real-life horror author Shirley Jackson and her husband Stanley Hyman.
“We were not making a film that we ever thought, ‘Oh, we’re making a film about the real Shirley Jackson’,” Decker told Deadline at Sundance. “In fact, the script really meshed up a bunch of timelines in the real Shirley Jackson’s life, so it absolutely was a fiction.

There are times, I suppose, when it’s a good thing that most of the open movie theaters are drive-ins. Or maybe it’s just that there are films that scream “B movie!” and belong in a setting that also screams “B movie!”
“Becky” certainly screams that, among the many other screams that emanate from its pint-sized, titular avenger. It’s a silly bloodbath administered by a vicious 13-year-old in a knit fox cap with cute little ears that flap as she makes the bad guys bleed. And if you’re desperate to get out of the house and you’ve already seen “The Wretched,” why not go for the movie that rewrites “Home Alone” in a way that gives the Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern characters gruesome, horrible deaths?
None of this, by the way, really qualifies as spoilers. In the opening scene, we see young Becky talking to...

What if Kevin James was cast as a neo-Nazi? That’s one of the many uninspired questions that Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s gruesome “Becky” answers in a movie driven by an increasingly boring set of narrative dares. Others include: What if the protagonist was a teenage girl so angry she could actually kill? What if there was a MacGuffin that was literally a key that didn’t open anything? Even as the movie The pair’s earlier film, “Cooties,” suffered from similar issues, attempting to build a thin idea (what if a zombie pandemic only turned little kids into monsters?) but at least it yielded more entertaining results.
“Becky” is as grim and gruesome as any horror movie in recent memory, but that alone can’t save this gross-out thriller. Still, the story opens with promise, through candy-colored title cards and fast cuts between Becky (the wonderful Lulu Wilson...

Comedians going dark can sometimes lead to a real cinematic discovery. They don’t even need to necessarily go dark, but to show another side of themselves is often a joy to witness. Look no further than Adam Sandler’s revelatory turn last year in Uncut Gems, continuing what he’s been able to show in work like Punch Drunk Love. Now, Sandler’s pal Kevin James takes a crack at it in the thriller Becky, a gory gender swapped take on material covered far lighter in Home Alone. James is certainly chillingly evil here, but the mean streak, especially in relation to dogs, found here ends up soiling the picture. The movie is a thriller, beginning with some father/daughter drama. Becky (Lulu Wilson) is headed to her family’s lake house with her father Jeff (Joel McHale) and their two dogs, sometime after her mother/his wife has passed away.

The line between vengeance and murder is illusory at best, and outright deceptive at worst. This means that, in cinema, there can be no revenge without bloodlust. Murder is still murder, no matter the cause. However, when filmmakers Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion pit a 13-year-old girl (an electric Lulu Wilson) against a gang of neo-Nazis (led by Kevin James), it’s difficult to think of anything but comeuppance.
It’s a glorious B-movie concept, upping the ante of Home Alone with copious amounts of bloodshed and turning the antagonists into the most loathsome bunch there is. Becky delivers wholeheartedly on these ideas, satiating our desire to see awful human beings get completely wrecked by someone half their size and age.
