“Tales From the Loop” has all the elements of a mystery box show, except it’s largely — and wisely — uninterested in its mystery. Set in a small Ohio town at an undisclosed time, the new science-fiction series from creator Nathaniel Halpern (a writer on “Legion”) tracks the lives of various locals who are affected by the titular “Loop”: a massive black machine housed underground within an experimental physics center.
So, what’s this machine do? As the company’s founder, Russ (Jonathan Pryce), explains to his grandson, Cole (Duncan Joiner), The Loop “makes the impossible, possible.”

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Tales from the Loop,” streaming now on Amazon.
From the moment it was conceived, “Tales From the Loop” — which debuted Thursday night on Amazon Prime Video — was unlike any science fiction TV series ever conceived, for the simple reason that it’s based on a series of paintings by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag.
Stålenhag’s artwork is at once everyday and fantastical — like a modest rural home sitting quietly in a winter landscape, while a robot stares almost plaintively at it from outside. When Nathaniel Halpern (“Legion”) first saw them while meeting with filmmaker Matt Reeves (“War for the Planet of the Apes”) at Reeves’ production company 6th & Idaho nearly five years ago, he was immediately captivated.
“It’s very hard to have an original aesthetic, especially in the science fiction genre,” Halpern tells Variety. “There’s something about...

Amazon’s new sci-fi series “Tales From the Loop” is a pretty difficult show to describe, even for its creator, Nathaniel Halpern, who also struggles with the idea of labeling it a sci-fi series at all.
“You’re making me flashback to when I had to pitch the show and it’s hard,” Halpern told TheWrap, when we made him try to compare his eight-episode Prime Video project, which launches Friday, to any other TV series that’s come before it. “Tonally, it’s rather unique and I don’t want to give the wrong impression, necessarily. It’s not a cynical or bleak show, so it’s certainly like the anti-‘Black Mirror.’ It’s not ‘Stranger Things,’ because it’s not trading on any kind of cultural nostalgia.”

Amazon Prime Video’s “Tales From the Loop” launches Friday and if you were wondering just what this new sci-fi show set in a town that resides above “The Loop” is all about, well TheWrap has an exclusive clip that won’t give you any answers, but will give you plenty more questions.
In the video, which you can view above, a tough little girl named Beth (Alessandra de Sa Pereira) is playing around with a pretty big robot in a large field when the police show up to warn her and her father that that thing is considered a menace by the other residents of their town.
Yeah, her father, Ed (played by Dan Bakkedahl), isn’t having it, insisting their large AI, which Beth controls via a device hooked up to her own body, isn’t bothering anyone. Though the cops leave, they don’t seem to buy this friendly neighborhood robot story.

Early on in the third episode of the new Amazon Prime series, “Tales From The Loop,” Russ Willard (Jonathan Pryce) brings his young grandson Cole (Duncan Joiner) to an abandoned and rust, dilapidated sphere somewhere on the outskirts of the fictional town of Mersa, Ohio. Russ tells Cole to step up and yell inside it. Cole does as he’s told and hears “Hello” repeat six times in what sounds like six increasingly different voices.

After reviewing The Stranger and Hunters, and looking at the premise and cast of Tales from the Loop, I was so hoping for another exciting, raging success. But alas, Tales from the Loop is only just meh.
Granted, the press was only privy to three of the original Amazon series' eight episodes, so it's possible the other five will blow me away.
Since Tales from the Loop is an anthology, the episodes we were given -- Tales from the Loop Season 1 Episode 1, Tales from the Loop Season 1 Episode 4, and Tales from the Loop Season 1 Episode 6 -- stand on their own.
But what is interesting about the show is the same characters are in each episode, tying it all together. This means, seeing more episodes might make it a bit more engaging.

Exclusive: At this evening hour, we’re hearing that Amazon Studios is pulling out of this year’s SXSW, 10 days before the festival kicks off in Austin on March 13. The move includes all Amazon-related activities at the festival, including two world episodic premieres, Greg Daniels’ sci-fi show Upload and Matt Reeves and Nathaniel Halpern’s Tales From the Loop.
In addition, Amazon Prime Video had a marketing activation with Entertainment Weekly, specifically their Blue Room photo/video studio and a party on Saturday night. Those aren’t happening now. Amazon Studios’ film side didn’t have any product scheduled for SXSW.
Upload takes place in the future, where people who are near death can be “uploaded” into a virtual afterlife of their choice. The 10-episode series stars Robbie Amell, Andy Allo, Allegra Edwards, Zainab Johnson and Kevin Bigley.

Amazon Prime Video’s Tales from the Loop is a sci-fi series set in an idyllic alternate history rife with robots and wonderment.
Tales from the Loop, an Amazon Prime Video sci-fi series, brandishes a motif centered on curiosity and awe against a pastoral backdrop that – complemented by its focus on kid protagonists – seems intent on tapping into the retro-1980s genre vein that has fueled Netflix’s Stranger Things to phenomenal success.
The series, headlined by Rebecca Hall, comes from rather original source material in the fantastical paintings of Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag. Nathaniel Halpern is the credited creator of Tales from the Loop, on which he also serves as writer. The director’s chair is occupied by Mark Romanek, who helmed an array of iconic music videos from the 1990s, as well as Robin Williams’s creepy turn in 2002 film One Hour Photo and the ultimately-unfruitful 2011 Locke & Key TV pilot.

The new HBO comedy from the creators of Girls puts Jennifer Garner in charge of the camping trip from hell.
Camping is a new limited series from writers and executive producers Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, the team that gave us Girls, but it’s safe to say that this HBO series is a little less like that and a little more like Lord of the Flies. Jennifer Garner has been in the news a lot lately for one of two reasons: her divorce from Ben Affleck was finalized or she's reportedly back in the dating game. In both cases, the talking point is related to her love life, but at the La premiere of Jennifer's new HBO show, Camping, the actress and mom of three opted to fly solo because, hey, she shines on her own.
At the premiere, she looked cheerful while taking photos with her costars David Tennant, Duncan Joiner, and Bridget Everett. She rocked a lustrous burgundy one-shoulder top and straight-leg pants styled with a pair of chain-link earrings. View photos of her being her fierce self at the event ahead.

There is an art to making comedy about irritating, self-involved, or even just flat-out terrible people. Sharp writing can make such characters wickedly funny, spitting jokes like acid that sting as hard as they land (see: “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”); it can peel back their defensive spiky layers to find surprising depth and tenderness hiding just underneath (see: “You’re the Worst”). But no matter what the approach, there has to be some dynamism in order to keep the story afloat, some glancing indication that the comedy’s got a little more to it than just showing off the depraved depths to which its characters could sink.
“Camping,” apparently, missed this memo.
The new HBO series — from “Girls” creators Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, based on a series by British comedian Julia Davis — strands a group of deeply irritating people out in the woods together for eight episodes worth of misery.

Camping star Jennifer Garner has posted the first cast photo from the set of the upcoming HBO comedy series.
“Let us commence,” she writes in the caption. “The cast of #HBOCamping before we’re sunburned and covered in ticks.”
Along with Garner, the photo includes David Tennant (Doctor Who), Juliette Lewis (Secrets and Lies), Bridget Everett (Inside Amy Schumer), Bret Gelman (Stranger Things), Ione Sky (Say Anything), Arturo del Puerto (Fear the Walking Dead), Janicza Bravo (Love) and Duncan Joiner (Lethal Weapon).
Based on the British series created by Julia Davis and co-written by Lena Dunham and Jeni Konner, who also showrun, Camping centers on Walt (Tennant), whose 45th birthday was supposed to be a delightful weekend back to nature, at least according to his obsessively organized and aggressively controlling wife Kathryn (Garner). But when the camping trip gathers Kathryn’s meek sister, holier-than-thou ex-best friend and a free-spirited Tagalong in one place,...

They’re going to need a bigger tent.
Jennifer Garner on Thursday posted a casual (yet sprawling!) group photo from the set of her new HBO comedy Camping. “Let us commence,” she wrote in the caption. “The cast of #HBOCamping before we’re sunburned and covered in ticks.”
The shot is the first time we’ve seen the cast assembled; in addition to Garner, the photo includes David Tennant (Doctor Who), Juliette Lewis (Secrets and Lies), Bridget Everett (Inside Amy Schumer), Bret Gelman (Stranger Things), Ione Sky (Say Anything), Arturo del Puerto (Fear the Walking Dead), Janicza Bravo (Love) and...

Based on its ad campaign, the primary reason The Disappointments Room was withheld from press screenings was to preserve the illusion that it might be a haunted house or demonic possession movie in the vein of recent James Wan and/or Jason Blum productions. The movie does open with a family—Dana (Kate Beckinsale), David (Mel Raido), and their young son Lucas (Duncan Joiner)—moving into an old house out in the country. But it ditches the creaking dread of recent ghost horror, checking off boxes too quickly to generate rudimentary tension: an overhead shot of an ominously dizzying spiral staircase; a woman wandering through dark, purportedly empty rooms; implications of a dead child.
The only sustained suspense comes from wondering what kind of horror movie it will turn into, and the realization that it will not feature a clown doll or skittering little-girl ghosts is one of its chief...

Like many horror movies, The Disappointments Room is at least inspired by a true story. The premise involves a secret room in the attic of an old house, which its new residents discover has a dark history. Kate Beckinsale, Mel Raido and Duncan Joiner play the family that moves in and finds the locked-up space, eventually learning that a "disappointments room" was where people would hide away a disabled child. In the film, which is directed by D.J. Caruso (Disturbia),...

In the film, which is directed by D.J. Caruso (Disturbia), there seems to be a supernatural aspect to the story, as Beckinsale's character is haunted by such a child, the young daughter of an old judge (Gerald McRainey). Check out the trailer: As the trailer claims, the movie is based on true events, but of course the Hollywood version is...

Relativity has released a trailer for a surprise horror film that's coming out in the next few weeks, titled The Disappointments Room, which we haven't heard much about until now. Kate Beckinsale stars, along with Duncan Joiner, as a mother and her young son who move to their dream home but discover a creepy room in the attic. Upon opening it, they unleash "unimaginable horrors". This trailer doesn't actually show any of those horrors, as it pretty much stops when she opens the door. The full cast includes Lucas Till, Gerald McRaney, Michaela Conlin, Michael Landes and Mel Raido. Give this a quick watch below. Here's the first official trailer for D.J. Caruso's The Disappointments Room, originally from Yahoo: When a mother and her young son move into their rural dream house, they accidentally unlock a hidden room in the attic and unleash unprecedented horror. The Disappointments Room is...
