After the success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the comedy/horror franchise is back on track. Not only will we be getting a sequel to Afterlife, but it was also announced earlier this year that a new animated Ghostbusters movie is in the works as well. Jennifer Kluska will be co-directing the Ghostbusters animated movie with Chris Prynoski. While speaking to The Wrap, Kluska said that The Real Ghostbusters animated TV series was her introduction to the franchise, and why it’s the right time to return to animation.

Sony Pictures is adding plenty more “Ghostbusters” to its production plans, announcing a new animated feature film based on the 80s sci-fi film series and revealing the upcoming sequel to last year’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” will take the franchise back to NYC.
The announcement was made on the Sony Pictures lot by “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” director Jason Reitman and his writing partner Gil Kenan Wednesday as part of “Ghostbusters Day,” a special event commemorating the anniversary of the original 1984 “Ghostbusters” release.
As teased by the post-credit sequence in “Afterlife,” the sequel will see the series return to the Ghostbusters’ original headquarters in a New York City firehouse, where Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) is seen driving the Ecto-1 back to its first home. The plot is still under wraps, so it is unclear whether the film will center more around the original Ghostbusters team minus the late Harold Ramis or around the...

As we limp into the third year of the pandemic, placating platitudes like “nothing is ever set in stone” continue to be the order of the day, as does tremendous flexibility when it comes to something relatively minor like, oh, when your next favorite movie is coming out. Despite the unpredictability of 2020 and 2021, female filmmakers continue to make great strides, from winning the top awards at the majority of last year’s biggest festivals, notching only the second woman to win the Best Director Oscar (Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland”), and churning out big-time box office hits.
While it’s still unclear if 2022 will provide a bounceback for the box office and its rising (and established) women talents, there are some positive indicators. According to the latest study from the Celluloid Ceiling, the longest-running and most comprehensive study of women’s employment in film, women directors were up overall in 2020. Women...

Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania: Transformania has been granted an April 3 theatrical release date in China. Sony last summer licensed the fourth installment in the successful franchise to Amazon worldwide, but retained China rights.
With the date now confirmed, Sony gets a month’s lead time on promotion and marketing in China where the previous films have grossed a combined $63M, including over $32M from 2018’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation.
Although April 3 is a Sunday, it falls at the start of the Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping Day, which can be a lucrative box office period. Still, Transformania will arrive in China nearly three months after it was released on Amazon Prime Video in 240 other countries and territories.
The Hotel Transylvania franchise has grossed $1.36 billion worldwide, with each pic making more than its predecessor. Sony opted to go the Amazon route with this one to avoid...

The basic idea at the heart of the animated “Hotel Transylvania” movies has never exactly been dignifying toward some of cinema history’s most feared classical monsters. The blood-thirsty Count Dracula reimagined as a fretting, overprotective dad straight out of “Father of the Bride”? A shy Invisible Man, a phobic Frankenstein, a toilet-clogging Bigfoot and a gang of other famous beasts vacationing at their vampire pal’s secluded gothic resort, just to escape the terrors of ordinary humans that they somehow fear?
Still, Genndy Tartakovsky’s wildly successful first film was winsome enough with its amusing albeit one-note witticisms about monster-verse clichés and Adam Sandler’s wickedly spirited voice performance as the bleh-bleh-bleh-averse Drac, before a pair of bland cash-cow sequels (also helmed by Tartakovsky) sucked all the life out of a decent premise. Amazon Prime Video will stream Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania: Transformania on January 14 in 240 countries and territories.
The tech company licensed rights to the fourth installment in the franchise from Sony earlier this year, extending its opportunistic streak as Covid continues to disrupt the film marketplace. Deadline reported discussions with Amazon in August, which were aimed at enabling the film to avoid a head-to-head matchup with another major animated title, Addams Family 2. Both had been scheduled to come out in early October.
Sony, which is unique among major studios for not having its own streaming platform to supply, has made moves during the pandemic like selling Greyhound to Apple and reaching a major overall agreement with Netflix.
The Hotel Transylvania franchise has grossed $1.3 billion. The new outing features voice work by Selena Gomez, Brian Hull, Jim Gaffigan, Andy Samberg, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, David Spade, Keegan-Michael Key,...

As Variety reported in August when a deal was close, Amazon has licensed “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania” from Sony Pictures Animation. The fourth (and final) installment in the blockbuster franchise will stream globally — excluding China — on Prime Video on Jan. 14, 2022. The first “Hotel Transylvania” movie was released in 2012, and the series has grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide.
Amazon similarly licensed “Cinderella” from Sony last spring, and the Kay Cannon-directed musical premiered on Prime Video in September.
“Transformania” is directed by Derek Drymon and Jennifer Kluska from a script by Amos Vernon, Nunzio Randazzo and franchise creator/executive producer Genndy Tartakovsky. Brian Hull and Brad Abrell have replaced original stars Adam Sandler and Kevin James as Dracula and Frankenstein, respectively. The rest of the cast has returned, including Selena Gomez as Mavis, Andy Samberg as Johnny, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Kathryn Hahn, Jim Gaffigan, Molly Shannon, Keegan-Michael Key and Fran Drescher.

Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Animation are nearing a $100 million deal for “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania” to skip theaters and head straight to Amazon Prime Video, according to Variety.
The franchise has grossed $1.3 billion in theaters worldwide since the first film’s debut in 2012. “Transformania” is the last in the series and will be directed by Derek Drymon and Jennifer Kluska. The film will star Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kathryn Hahn, Jim Gaffigan, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, David Spade and Keegan-Michael Key. Amos Vernon and Nunzio Randazzo wrote the script.
Many studios that don’t have their own streaming service have decided to sell their films during the pandemic. Sony sold “Greyhound” to Apple and “Happiest Season” to Hulu. Additionally, the studio partnered with Netflix on “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Fatherhood” and “Vivo,” and with Amazon on “Cinderella” starring Camila Cabello. Paramount Pictures, for example, sold “Coming 2 America” to Amazon as well.

Sony Pictures Animation and Amazon are nearing deal for over $100 million for the animated feature “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania” to stream globally on Amazon Prime Video, Variety has learned exclusively.
“Hotel Transylvania” has been a monster family franchise for Sony, with the first three films grossing more than $1.3 billion in theaters worldwide since 2012. But the surge in Covid cases — driven by the highly contagious delta variant predominantly infecting unvaccinated people — has made theatrical exhibition of family pics untenable since there is no vaccine yet for children under 12. With New York City enacting a vaccine mandate for indoor venues on Tuesday, and other major cities seriously considering their own, sources say that in early August, Sony began exploring an alternative release for the fourth “Hotel Transylvania” movie, which had been slated to open in theaters on Oct. 1.

In another sign of the distressing pandemic backslide for the film industry, Sony Pictures is currently exploring alternative distribution for its upcoming animated feature “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania,” Variety has learned from multiple sources with knowledge of the effort.
The fourth entry in the kid-friendly franchise, which has grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide since 2012, was set to debut in theaters on Oct. 1. But the delta variant raises serious questions about the safety of children under 12 in public spaces, since there is no vaccine yet available for that age bracket and health experts say the highly contagious strain of Covid-19 is more virulent for younger people. The recent news that exhibitors are not planning to object to vaccine mandates for indoor events only further reduces the financial viability of any family movies currently set to play only in theaters.

“Hotel Transylvania” franchise creator Genndy Tartakovsky is the screenwriter and executive producer of the film, which is directed by Jennifer Kluska and Derek Drymon. Selena Gomez reprises her role as Drac’s daughter, Mavis, and also serves as an executive producer. “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania” is also executive produced by Michelle Murdocca and produced by Alice Dewey Goldstone.

Updated, 2:08: Sony is moving its four-quel to October 1. Hotel Transylvania: Transformania was slated to go this summer, on July 23. Some of this could have to do with the fact that the domestic marketplace isn’t fully back yet: Portions of Canada remain closed, and capacity restrictions average around 66% — this despite the fact that L.A. and NYC are at 100% this weekend. The studio just tried to open Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, which it kept safe for a pure theatrical release during the pandemic, but families didn’t rush out to see it, with the sequel opening to $10.1M. Peter Rabbit 2 already has done $58M abroad.
Hotel Transylvania: Transformania moves off a very busy weekend where Universal’s M. Night Shyamalan thriller Old is squaring off with Paramount’s Snake Eyes, among major studio fare. Transformania moves to a weekend where Warner Bros./HBO has Legendary’s Dune,...
