"One dog can change everything." Purdie Distribution has revealed a trailer for a new dog movie called The Stray, about a stray dog named Pluto who changes the lives of one family. The full cast of mostly unknowns includes Sarah Lancaster, Michael Cassidy, Scott Christopher, Connor Corum, Jacque Gray, Cory Dangerfield and Coral Chambers. I'm a big, big time dog lover, and I'm always on the lookout for films about dogs, but this doesn't look that good. Oddly, the dog barely shows up in the trailer that much. It's all about the people. This looks about as cheesy and mediocre as A Dog's Purpose, the other dog movie this year. At least the doggie looks cute, with his charming different colored eyes. That's about all I can say. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Mitch Davis' The Stray, direct from YouTube: The Stray tells the true story of how a stray dog,...

Each year when my Bfca ballot arrives I stop in my tracks, stumped, when I get to "Young Performer". Categories that aren't Oscar correlative are often trickier.
Oh dear. How uneasy I feel..."
That's not because you're free of predicting (anyone trying to predict with their own ballot really ought to find a new profession -- criticism: ur not doing it right) but because it's a subsection of acting you probably haven't been discussing at all. You suddenly remember that you need to have been considering it with as much seriousness as you have made your other selections.
I imagine that Ellar Coltrane, the now 20 year old star of Boyhood, will be tough to beat since this category is for the 21 and under set. But even if the category were adjusted downward to 17 and younger (which we strongly support as a rule change -because it's always weird when an adult...

You’d think any movie that an all-powerful deity had a hand in would be awesome, right? Turns out, not so much. There’s barely even a story here. I’m “biast” (pro): always want to love Greg Kinnear and Kelly Reilly

Heaven is for real? Proven by a movie?! Well, no. At best, this cinematic sermon almost humbly acknowledges that even Christians know their fairy tale about a heaven of fluffy white clouds and Jesus in a bathrobe sounds like, you know, a fairy tale that is hard to accept at face value. At worst, it’s a shameless money grab by a family in desperate financial straits cashing in on the fantasies of their little boy. I don’t see how either option — or...

‘The Other Woman’ 2014 box office: Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann comedy to top North American box office chart despite mostly bad reviews (photo: Kate Upton, Cameron Diaz, and Leslie Mann in ‘The Other Woman’) Starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Kate Upton, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the Nick Cassavetes-directed comedy The Other Woman will easily top the North American box office this weekend, April 25-27, 2014. The story of three women who gang up to take revenge on their cheating husband/lover, The Other Woman — which would have been more accurately titled "The Other Women" — opened with a solid $9.3 million at 3,205 U.S. and Canadian locations on Friday, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. As the old saying goes, "If you give them trash, they’ll gobble it up (and ask for seconds)" — or something along those lines. Anyhow, 20th Century Fox’s $40 million-budgeted The Other Woman, which has...

A current movie trend is the True Story. The Railway Man, Philomena, the upcoming Million Dollar Arm and Walking with the Enemy are some of the April and May titles. Just released is Heaven is for Real, and KidsPickFlicks' Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara (Contest) say it's a film that will get you thinking:
"What happens after we die? This age old question is tackled by an adorable 4 year old named Colton in Heaven is for Real. The film follows the story of the Burpo family, headed by Renaissance man Todd, the towns pastor, wrestling coach, fireman, and garage door repairman, as they struggle with questions of life, death, faith, family, and community surrounding the near death of their son Colton. The cast of this film was quite brilliant creating an ensemble that had a genuine thread of connectivity and community between each character.

It's Johnny vs. Jesus at the box office this weekend, but which should you see? Depp dulls in Transcendence, but Greg Kinnear makes a real case for Heaven. Skip ThisTranscendence var brightcovevideoid = '3482679943001'; Unfortunately for Johnny Depp, he is not Her. That is to say, his largely vocal performance as Dr. Will Caster, an artificial intelligence pioneer who uploads his mind into a computer, isn't nearly as evocative and rich as Scarlett Johansson's in last year's similarly themed Spike Jonze film. Where Johansson was effervescent and engrossing as the operating system Samantha, Depp's Caster seems bored and detached...

This Easter weekend, the based-on-a-true-story movie "Heaven Is for Real" opens in theaters across the country. As the title would imply, and just like the novel and children's book of the same titles, the story focuses on a young boy (Connor Corum) who comes out of emergency surgery claiming that he took a side-trip through heaven and met Jesus (on a multi-colored horse, no less). Greg Kinnear plays his preacher father who must decide how ...

"Heaven is for Real" is a real success at the box-office. The faith-based drama starring Greg Kinnear wowed with a $3.7 million take on 2,400 screens over its opening day Wednesday, good enough for a No. 1 finish over the blockbuster sequels "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Rio 2." The film's long-term prospects are looking promising as well, with audience exit polling resulting in an "A" CinemaScore for the film, which was made for a reported pricetag of only $12 million. Based on the bestselling non-fiction book by Todd Burpo, "Heaven is for Real" centers on a young boy (Connor Corum) who comes back from a near-death experience claiming he experienced Heaven. The film's box-office triumph follows on the success of other recent faith-based films including "God's Not Dead" ($42 million to date), "Son of God" ($62 million) and Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" ($249 million) starring Russell Crowe. Other wide releases this weekend include “Transcendence" starring Johnny Depp,...

“Heaven Is for Real” is really dividing critics, but at least none of them seemed to hate it. Although, not very many were impressed by the depiction of the club in the clouds that it's promoting. The faith-based film stars Greg Kinnear and Kelly Reilly as the parents of a young boy (Connor Corum) who, after suffering a near-death experience, swears that he met Jesus in Heaven. Currently, “Heaven” holds a 54 percent “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a little over half of its 48 reviews reflecting positively on Sony's Easter weekend release. Chicago – It would be easy to dismiss “Heaven Is for Real,” given that it is based on the visions of the afterlife by a child, that just happens to coincide perfectly with Christian doctrine (Jesus, Angels, etc.). But there is more to this film in the sincerity of its spirituality, and it succeeds with that inspiration.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The key was establishing a viable authenticity to the atmosphere of the vision, and get the right cast to deliver it, which director Randall Wallace (“Secretariat,” “We Were Soldiers”) was able to accomplish. He creates a hometown America that is part of the scenario, a luxurious and spacious hinterland of unyielding peace. The juxtaposition of the otherworldly garden of the boy’s vision with the wonder of earth creates a “heaven” that is for real, if we open our eyes. That spirit of simplicity becomes the kingdom.

The film Heaven is For Real begs the question, is heaven for real? The film is based on the true story of a four-year-old boy’s account of heaven as told by his pastor/father Todd Burpo played by Greg Kinnear.
The story takes place in small town America. The Burpoes are a beautiful family, struggling financially while going through life with just about the best attitude possible. In the face of typical life adversities, we learn the importance of love and faith to this family. When the unthinkable happens, their community comes together in prayer for the beyond adorable Colton Burpo (Connor Corum) after he has fallen devastatingly ill. I cannot begin to describe just how super cute this boy is. Those that have read the book will not be disappointed at just how perfect and true to character this young actor has played his role.

It’s no secret that Christian-themed films have the potential to be box office gold, but even though faith-based audiences are starved for more material, it doesn’t always pan out the way studios might hope.
While Paramount’s expensive and provocative Darren Aronofsky-directed Noah continues to climb the steep slope toward domestic profitability and Mark Burnett and Roma Downey’s Son of God failed to reach Passion of the Christ heights (after seven weeks in theaters it still hasn’t even made Passion’s opening weekend numbers), the independently released God’s Not Dead came out of nowhere...

Chicago – The actor Greg Kinnear has been known for his neat and tidy image, but never has he portrayed a religious leader. His role as Todd Burpo – a pastor of a church and the father whose son believes “Heaven Is for Real” – brings the energy of spirituality to the movies just in time for the Easter holiday.
Born in small town Logansport, Indiana, Greg Kinnear was the son of a career diplomat, and moved around quite a bit as a child, even living overseas. He is a veteran actor who first came into prominence when he hosted the first version of “Talk Soup” on the E! Network in 1991. Four years later, he made a splashy film debut as David Larrabee in the 1995 remake of Billy Wilder’s “Sabrina,” directed by Sydney Pollack.

Greg Kinnear is the perfect actor to star in Heaven is for Real, an adaptation of the nonfiction best-seller of the same name. The guy from Flash of Genius and Little Miss Sunshine is the one you want for another character struggling in life and trying to convince people of something. He has sad eyes but a charming smile. And in movies like this, no matter how you feel about the message at its core, you’ll like the person he’s playing and want him to succeed. If Tucker: The Man and His Dream or Field of Dreams were remade today, Kinnear would be a great choice to play either’s protagonist. Heaven is for Real is actually quite reminiscent of the latter. It’s set in the Midwest farmlands and deals with a man about to lose everything, it involves a father/son relationship and, most importantly, it involves the afterlife. Yet...

“Braveheart” and “We Were Soldiers” writer/director Randall Wallace gets spiritual in the “based on a true story” film “Heaven is For Real”. Apparently it’s about a kid who almost died and went to heaven, then came back and talked to people about it. He then wrote a book. Well, his parents probably helped him, or someone else did (what is he, 3?), and now a movie is being made about it. Cute kid. He’s like a countrified version of Haley Joel Osment. Not my cup of tea, but hey, it looks inspirational and all that good stuff. Might be a good flick for the kids and parents who think movies these days are just too darn violent and whatnot. Please to watch. The film stars Academy Award® nominee and Emmy® award winning actor Greg Kinnear as Todd Burpo and co-stars Kelly Reilly as Sonja Burpo, the real-life couple...
