Over the last week, it looked like the Lynchian fever dream of a Gambit film might not come to pass, with star (and producer) Channing Tatum apparently on the brink of exiting the X-Men spinoff.
It turns out Tatum is still on board, but the incident got us thinking of some other superhero castings that nearly were but never will be:

Wolverine
Hugh Jackman has become so synonymous with the iconic X-Man that it's strange to think of anyone else taking on the role (even if they inevitably will). But before he had been cast, Russell Crowe was considered to play the angry Canadian mutant, and is credited with directing Bryan Singer's attention towards his fellow Aussie.
A-list hopeful Dougray Scott came even closer, and was actually cast in the role before shooting on Mission: Impossible 2 overran,...

Did you know that June 12 every year is Superman Day? We're not sure how this particular day came to be dedicated to the Man of Steel, especially since he seems omnipresent in our lives every day. A pop cultural mainstay since 1938, the Krypton-born hero never seems far away, especially in the movies.
