This Japanese docudrama is an excellent primer on the scary near- meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in 2011. After the earthquake, a tsunami triggered a ‘major nuclear event.’ A group of dedicated engineers struggle against odds to regain control. It’s another 21st Century disaster writ large — we applaud the camaraderie and commitment of the response teams while bureaucratic and political Bs threatens to doom half of Japan. As with last week’s Spacewalker I’m betting that most negative reviews were written by people who saw the English language dub job … in the original Japanese, star Ken Watanabe’s performance is terrific.

Fans of Japanese novelist Keigo Higashino are in for a double treat in the next few months, as two more of his books make it to the big screen. Rights to both are being offered for sale by Shochiku at the Tiffcom market this week.
First in cinemas will be “The House Where The Mermaid Sleeps,” a drama about an already estranged couple who torment each other further when their daughter is put on to a new-tech life support system. The film is directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi and stars Ryoko Shinohara and Hidetoshi Nisjijima. Its world premiere is on Monday as a gala at the Tokyo International Film Festival. It releases in Japanese theaters on Nov. 16.
The book was written to commemorate Higashino’s 30th year as a novelist. And became an instant bestseller, with 270,000 copies sold in the first month alone. Prolific, Higashino has seen more than 20 of his books adapted as Japanese films,...

This particular movie continues in the aforementioned footsteps.
“Louder! Can’t Hear What You’re Singing, Wimp” is part of the Asian selection at Fantasia International Film Festival
Sin is a rock icon, a kind of Japanese Marilyn Manson whose charisma and powerful voice have propelled him to the top of the music scene. Sin, however, also hides a heavy secret: he regularly receives shots of steroids to boost his vocal chords. During a hectic concert, a stream of blood suddenly starts gushing out of his mouth, literally bathing the audience in it. Unfortunately, it’s not a stunt,...
