On a Friday afternoon in August, the lobby of a new apartment complex in the heart of Hollywood is humming. Lucky renters are finalizing leases, tenants are lugging paintings and pillows into the elevator while commiserating over late night clatter caused by postal trucks next door; and a group of friends huddles in a courtyard talking shop. The scene is typical of L.A. apartment living, but the building is anything but.
The seven-story property — named the Cicely Tyson Residential Building after the late icon and located at 1630 Schrader Blvd., near the Hollywood Walk of Fame — houses 151 apartments, all of which soon will be occupied exclusively by artists (defined as someone who has regularly engaged in an artistic, creative or cultural practice and who pursues such practice on a professional basis) and their families. About six weeks ago, locals and visitors to the famed intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street saw one of the bare walls in the area begin to show some shapes and colors. Over on Instagram, posing at the same spot, Los Angeles urban pop artist Tristan Eaton wrote on July 17, “My dream wall is finally happening!”
On Aug. 25, the six-story mural, which adorns the south-facing side of the Aster club and hotel, had its official reveal in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The mural was created with spray paint and executed in Eaton’s signature collage style, which mixes pop art and traditional techniques. It’s a salute to Hollywood groundbreakers such as Judy Garland and Sidney Poitier, whose likenesses are the largest figurative elements of the work. Garland’s daughter, Lorna Luft, and granddaughter, Vanessa Richards, were among the guests who attended the ribbon-cutting.

It took forever — well, 122 years — but Hollywood Forever Cemetery was designated a historic-cultural monument by the Los Angeles City Council today following a unanimous recommendation from the city’s Cultural Heritage Commission.
The cemetery, which was founded in 1899, was included in the National Register of Historic Places on its 100th anniversary, but equivalent local recognition took another quarter century or so.
On June 25, 2021, Councilman Mitch O’Farrell began the city’s effort to include the cemetery on its own list of historic-cultural monuments. Following O’Farrell’s actions, the Cultural Heritage Commission considered the property on Oct. 21 and recommended the City Council add it to the list.
“I was surprised that this wasn’t already on our list,” Commissioner Richard Barron said during the meeting. “It’s always interesting when something comes before us that you think, ‘That’s not a monument yet?’ ”

Hoping to quell a rising tide of homeless encampments that have become a political lightning rod in the city, a City Council anti-camping ordinance went into effect today.
The new law bars homeless encampments in specific areas, such as parks and near schools. However, the details of the new ordinance are still being worked out. The selection and processing of the areas where such encampments will be banned has yet to be determined. Moreover, outreach teams to the area homeless will be required to talk to the affected campers before citing them.
Those details mean the impact of the new law isn’t going to be apparent for some time. Still, its implementation is yet another step in quelling growing community outrage at a seemingly out of control problem that has taken over many parts of the city.

The Los Angeles City Council voted 13-0 today to have the city attorney prepare an ordinance requiring people to show proof of at least partial vaccination against Covid to enter most public indoor spaces in the city, including restaurants, bars, gyms, concert venues, movie theaters and even “retail establishments.”
Council President Nury Martinez — who is in line take over as mayor once Eric Garcetti leaves — and Councilman Mitch O’Farrell introduced the motion last Wednesday.
“Covid-19 could be eradicated if we had mass vaccinations across the country and across the world,” O’Farrell said before noting the United States’ history eradicating smallpox and mostly eradicating polio through vaccinations.
“Why on Earth is it Ok in 2021 to have 30 plus people die in the county of Los Angeles from Covid over a three-day period, including an 11-year- old girl, when we have a vaccine that could have prevented all of that, accessible to everyone,...

Los Angeles appears likely to join New York in requiring that private venues, including restaurants and movie theaters, ensure that patrons are vaccinated against Covid-19.
The Los Angeles City Council voted 13-0 on Wednesday to direct the city attorney to draft an ordinance that will mandate vaccines in indoor public settings, including restaurants, gyms, retail stores, theaters, concert venues and stadiums.
“If we ever want to get back to normal, to what Los Angeles was like pre-covid, we need to stop the spread,” said Council President Nury Martinez. “If individuals want to go to their gym, go to their local bar without a mask, you need to get vaccinated. And if you want to watch a basketball game, a baseball game, go to a concert in a big venue, or even go into a movie theater, you need to get a shot.”

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors ordered plans be drafted that would require proof of vaccination to enter many public spaces. The motion was just to make a plan for such a measure, not to actually implement one.
Supervisor Janice Hahn called for the proof of vaccination evaluation “to correct course on what we see as the Delta variant gone wild.” She noted that just about 4 million of the county’s 10 million residents remain unvaccinated.”
Hahn’s proposal called on health officers and other county leaders to analyze vaccine requirements for public spaces in other regions, especially New York’s, which she said “shows promising results and may build a case for implementing similar mandates in other cities.” She called on public health and other county officials to report back to the board “on possible options for requiring vaccines in certain indoor public spaces” and how those would be implemented.

All Los Angeles County employees will be required to be vaccinated against Covid-19 by Oct. 1 under an executive order issued by Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda L. Solis. The order goes beyond many of the recent orders from other officials at the federal, state and local levels in that it does not make an accommodation for those who do not wish to be vaccinated.
“With the coronavirus again raging, driven by the highly contagious Delta variant, Solis said, “the need for immediate action is great.”
Solis cited an 18-fold increase in cases and five-fold jump in hospitalizations since June 15, when the county lifted coronavirus restrictions amid falling case rates.
In announcing the executive order Wednesday night, Solis said there will be exemptions for medical and religious purposes — but otherwise, it will apply to all of the county’s 110,000 employees “regardless of the department they serve.”

Proof of at least partial vaccination against Covid-19 would be required to enter public indoor spaces in the city of Los Angeles, including restaurants, bars, gyms, concert venues, movie theaters and even “retail establishments,” under a proposal introduced Wednesday by City Council President Nury Martinez.
“Enough is enough already,” said Martinez, who co-introduced the motion with Councilman Mitch O’Farrell. “Hospital workers are exhausted, moms who have put aside their careers are tired, and our kids cannot afford the loss
of another school year. We have three vaccines that work and are readily available, so what’s it going to take?”

Netflix officially closed their deal to acquire the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard and will team with the venue’s nonprofit American Cinematheque. Deadline first broke the news last August of the streamer’s interest in the Sid Grauman built venue.
The American Cinematheque organization, established in 1984 will remain a non-profit, with the organization’s curation team intact, and along with Netflix will continue to expand the cinema’s movie and event programming. Netflix will invest in the theatre’s renovation and will use the revitalized space for special events, screenings and premieres during the week. The Cinematheque will continue to program and operate a second historic theater, the Aero in Santa Monica.
“The Egyptian Theatre is an incredible part of Hollywood history and has been treasured by the Los Angeles film community for nearly a century,” said Scott Stuber, head of Netflix Films. “We’re honored to partner with...

Netflix and the American Cinematheque are partnering on a deal to invest in the restoration of the historic, century-old Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, the two groups announced Friday.
TheWrap reported in April 2019 that Netflix was in early talks to buy the Egyptian Theatre from American Cinematheque, and the deal has now closed, though it was reported at the time the deal is part of an effort to restore the cinema and not expand to brick and mortar theater operations.
Netflix will invest in the theater’s renovation and will use the space for events, screenings and premieres during the week, while the non-profit film organization American Cinematheque will continue to curate its movie program on the weekends. The announcement says that the partnership will allow American Cinematheque to expand the scope of its event programming, festivals and educational outreach.

Nobody walks in La, the Missing Persons song said. Apparently they do, but now they all have to travel in the same direction. Complaints about the lack of social distancing around one of the most popular walking paths in Los Angeles has prompted city officials to institute new rules on which way you can walk.
Los Angeles City Councilmembers Mitch O’Farrell and David Ryu announced Friday that the trail around the Silver Lake Reservoir will turn into a one-way path.

A Hollywood Walk of Fame that better accommodates people and businesses by adding more street trees, sidewalk dining and lighting is envisioned, according to an announcement from City Councilman Mitch O’Farrell, whose district encompasses the landmark stars that lure millions of tourists each year.
During his annual “State of Hollywood” address, O’Farrell announced the release of a concept plan to enhance the built environment and improve the pedestrian experience on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It marks the latest proposal regarding his “Heart of Hollywood” initiative.
In 2019, the Gensler architecture firm was retained to work on a Master Plan for the Walk of Fame. The goal was designing a more pleasant, cohesive, and enjoyable experience along the public right-of-way.
